 Linus

First: Try the last release (alpha14) www.xcdroast.org, and also:

/26. Write performance is bad or my system freezes!/
If your system is put into high stress while you write a CD you might
get buffer underruns or in the worst case the system locks up
completely. Almost always these problems hint towards an incorrectly
configured system.
First check the transferrate of your harddrive - on linux there is a
tool called hdparm which does a nice job here.
/sbin/hdparm -t /dev/hda
This will measure the raw read throughput of your drive - you should see
values like 20-30MB/s for modern drives. If you are way below that value
you cannot write CDs in high-speed. Check if DMA transfer is enabled for
that drive. (See man hdparm for details).
Next thing is to check if you have other programs which also access the
CD-ROM/CD-Writer. Desktop-Systems often have KDE or Gnome running which
try to automount each inserted CD. This often kills cdrecord. Turn off
all this automatic CD handling in the Setup of KDE/Gnome. There are also
CD-Player applets in KDE and Gnome which should be disabled.
Now we check the writer device itself. Use hdparm again to see if DMA is
enabled. For some systems DMA should be on, on others it should be
disabled. You have to try for yourself which configuration gives you the
best results.
/sbin/hdparm -d 0 -u 0 -k 1 /dev/hdc
This command disables DMA transfers /dev/hdc (possibly your CD-Writer).
Some reports told me that this often fixed problems.
If you still have problems you can try to set the Set SCSI IMMED flag
option within the X-CD-Roast write dialog. On systems where harddrive
and writer are on the same IDE bus this can improve the behaviour.

Re: [newbie] nVidia driver fails to initialize at startup

  Gah, another problem:
I just recently installed the nVidia driver for the GForce FX graphics

to change the XF86Config file to use the new driver. And so I did, and
restarted the X server, and now what happens is the screen flickers a
couple of times, and it give me an error message saying it couldn't start
X Server because the nVidia kernal failed to initialize. So I go to it's
documentation page, and it says this isn't the fault of linux's kernal,
but it's the fault of the nVidia kernal, and could be due to the fact
  that it's module isn't loaded. So, using the terminal X Server-less, I
browse to /sbin/ like it says and I do insmod nvidia, and then modprobe
nvidia. It loads successfully, but when I start up X server ('xdm' in the
command line) the screen just goes blank, and I have to restart to get
out of it. I was also wanting to know if there is any text editors that
work without X Server, so incase if theres nothing I can do about it I
can just edit the XF86Config back to what it was. Thanks.

Try this way: enter BIOS Setup and enable: 'Assign IRQ to VGA'

Anne, try this steps:

If you downloaded an ISO-image (e.g. a linux distribution) you have to
copy that big file (extension should be .iso) first to an
image-directory of X-CD-Roast. You specify these directories in Setup at
the HD Settings tab. These are the places where X-CD-Roast will look
for audio (.wav) or data tracks.
Now you enter the Create CD menu and you will see your image-file
displayed nicely in the Image-Information window. Go to Write Tracks
- click on Layout tracks tab, add your image-file, click on Accept
track layout and finally a click at Write tracks will write that
image perfectly to your CD-R/RW.

then you probably have upgraded from an older version and some of the
old files are still around, being in the way. Maybe it's even just some
  bad leftover symlinks.

This can happen if you install from source or use a packaging
system that doesn't clean up previous installations thoroughly enough.

Remove all older xine libraries manually (rm $prefix/lib/libxine*.
and while you're at it, throw away any old plugins in
$prefix/lib/xine/plugins/ as well, just to be safe.) Then install
xine-lib and xine-ui again. This should fix the problem.

Currently quick-copy (copying without buffering any tracks on harddrive)
only works for pure data-CDs. We are working on audio-quick copy, so
that the final version of X-CD-Roast 0.98 should offer this feature.
(The real problem is, that the cdrtools do not yet support that feature,

Is there a way that I can manually straighten this out?

1. Make a bootable floppy (You will need 'fdisk' in there.)
2. Boot from that floppy, and at prompt, type: 'fdisk /mbr' (without quottes)
This will remove lilo.
3. Then, run 'fdisk' and just delete linux partitions.

If lm_sensors is properly installed and configured, and theres no
hardware dificiency on the motherboards part, compensating temps using
gkrellm tweaks is a bad idea. The temps you see in bios, even after a
warm reboot are indicative of a system that is under very low load and
isn't up to operating temperature. Temps after booting the OS,
specially under load, should be higher than what bios reported.

The important thing to note with voltages is that they stay steady.
Varying voltages, again, specially under load (eg, 'make modules'),
indicates a poor and/or inadequate power supply.

The acid test for all this is http://users.ev1.net/~redelm/

Gracias, Tom

file:/usr/share/doc/lm_sensors-2.6.4/doc/FAQ have a lot of info. I'm reading

gkrellm will monitor with the gkrellm-plugins d/l'd from rpmfind.net.
Don't know how accurate it may be in reality but the sensor readings show
 up. HTH

Thanks, Dennis. I just have installed gkrellm+plugs. With some fine tune from
inside gkrellm, everything (temp, rpm, volt, etc.) match values of Bios.

[newbie] MDK 9.0 Nvidia

2002-11-09 Thread Pilagá

Is there any way to get nvidia rpms working in MDK 9.0?

The path: 2960 or 3123, plus load glx, plus nvnvidia, don't work at all.

A search with google, report:

type the following commands after logging in as root:

#cd /usr/X11R6/lib
 #ln -s /usr/lib/libGL.so libGL.so.1.2 ln -s libGL.so.1.2 libGL.so
 #/sbin/ldconfig
 #reboot

Is this correct, and safe? (I know how to uninstall GLX and kernel nvidia's,
but, and if something go wrong, I don't know how to undo all that ln -s...
stuff.)

Gracias.

 How to get /dev/parport.

I'm sorry, but I can't go beyond. My Astra 2000 is dead, and I can't check it

This is not a supported use of GTK+. You must create a helper

 http://www.gtk.org/setuid.html

 Refusing to initialize GTK+.
How to make it work both as user?

This is what developers said: Note that the backend needs to run as root. To
allow user access to the scanner run the backend through the network
interface (See saned(1) and sane-net(5)). A more relaxed solution (security
wise) is to add suid bit to the fron tend (See chmod(1)). The backend drop
root priviledges as soon as it can, right after gaining direct access to
IO ports.

Also, Stef Voltz tell me:

Try usin gthe ppdev mode. With latest version, you may launch xsane as:
xsane umax_pp:/dev/parport0 , and then run as normal user. Provided
that
ppdev device is usable by user, and exists in MDK 8.2 (which should be the
case).

Also, you may edit umax_pp.conf in /usr/local/etc/sane.d to have a
'port'
option which points to /dev/parport0. Here's an excerpt from my umax_pp.conf:

# DEVICES #

# specify the port your scanner is connected to. Possible are 0x378 (lp0)
# 0x278 (lp1)
#port 0x378
port /dev/parport0

# the following options are local to this scanner

You can contact Stef (developer) at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

MDK xsane, and all related stuff (for UMAX Astra, and compatibles) are
