[newbie] assistance with nmb/smb

2001-02-14 Thread S. Stubbs

Hi, I have asked in the past how to keep my network on my linux
box running.
Here is what happens:
I have samba services on my linux box.
After a few days or so, my windows box cannot see my linux box
in network neighborhood.
So I go into the linux box and try very hard to see what the problem
is. I go to SWAT, and try to restart the services for nmb which say
that it is not running, nothing happens.
So I have found the only way I know to get things going again, I go
to linux conf, into the network section. Just rattling around in there
is enough to set off this box when I leave linux conf:
"the state of the system is not in synch, blah, blah, and so forth...
/etc/rc5.d/S10network.probe
Executing /etc/rc5.d/S10network.reload"
I select the "do it" button.
Ok, Now I am getting REAL tired of doing this to get samba back and
to be able to see my linux box from the windows box.
Is there someone who can send me a file or something that will fix this
annoyance??
Like I said before, in SWAT there are buttons for smb and nmb, and
I have tried to restart nmb from there but it won't work. The smb button
does work though.
Also for noting, I have gone to the startup services in drakconf, and
the network item is "selected" for auto startup.
Also another note of things that bug me:
When I go to samba configuration, it always says that I have more than
one share and only the first share will be loaded. So I would also like to
fix this annoyance, what should I do?
Thanks in advance to anyone who replies with ontopic help and assistance,
especially if you can help me in gui mode instead of terminal.
Susan

Hi All,

I hope someone can help me out, can't get a good install on my home built
system. This is what I have:

Asus A7V 700Mhz Duron
128mg PC133 ram
Sound Blaster Live Value
Ati Rage pro 128 32mgs
Acer 40x Cd-rom
10gig W/D hard drive ATA66

When Mandrake's installer gets to the package install it finds errors in
them and
shuts down the install. Tried turning off my L1 cache, also just about
anything
else I could think of. Always the same. Even Windoze doesn't like this
setup.
I thought I had the parts to make one heck of a Linux box,but soon going
to
swap out parts. May get something back.
I am tried of my out dated 166Mhz.

Thanks for any input

Re: [newbie] Recruitment Notice

2001-01-10 Thread S. Stubbs

I am interested in testing mandrake softwares. I have DSL
connection, I have 20gig secondary drive all devoted to
mandrake7.2 right now on one of my boxen and I could
put experimental distro on it too. I have enjoyed the 7.2
mandrake and have only had a few problems with samba
config, supermount, and some other minor glitches that
the gurus have gotten me through. Right now the mandrake
boxen is running steady and no problems.
Let me know if I can help by trying new distro.

Well, folks, it is that time of the development cycle where we traditionally
(actually this is a brand new tradition) seek a few brave souls to act as
testers for our next distro.

This time, all you need is bravery and a computer system to try this out on.
We are finishing testing protocols which will lead you through the testing
steps; we have software that phones home with your tester number and your
hardware configuration, and we are building a web site to post results and
opinions.

For the first time, we are looking for more than bugs to fix. We are looking
for ratings of functionality that we can share with the community, and with
the developers and maintainers of the packages, even those we do not do
ourselves.

To enroll, just email me. Tell me whether you have a fast connection and if
not, send a postal address. Oh, and make sure you are able to dedicate a
little time the month of Valentine's Day.

Well the pay isn't great ($0) but you do get my personal assistance via email
to configure your computer to the next release.

Well, the way to assure they do is to be a tester. Actually they sometimes

[newbie] Star Office 5.2 with mdk 7.2

2000-12-10 Thread S. Stubbs

Hi, I have mdk 7.2. I burned my own ISOs and installed
it. It is all updated through mandrake update, and I have
it all set up with the internet just fine.
However, I have explored the CDs from crappy
macmillan walmart mdk7.2.on which
I found on their 3rd or 4th CD the star office 5.2 rpm and installed
it with rpmdrake. So now I have it in my startmenu, but when I
go to it as user, it wants to install and go through setup. What
exactly should I do at this point? I know staroffice has to do an
install for each user, what is the best way for this??
Any advice is welcome, thanks.

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 Disk image

2000-11-27 Thread S. Stubbs

Ok, if your bios supports it, you can change the drive order
that it boots the OS from. My bios supports it and all you do
is to go into bios and change the bootorder setting from something like
this: A:, C:, CDROM to something like this:
CDROM, C:, A:, then save and exit.
Put CD in cdrom drive and boot up and it will boot to your
cdrom drive, and the linux CD. Once you have installed linux,
you can then later go back into bios and change the boot order
back to the way it was originally.
Good luck.

Re: [newbie] StarOffice as user

Question: what if you got the Staroffice5.2 rpm off of the
App CD from the nasty walmart version of mandrake 7.2?
I have installed mandrake 7.2 from downloaded ISOs, after
finding out how "incomplete" the "complete" version was, and
then, I wanted the Staroffice5.2 and knew it was on the App CD,
so I did kpackage as "root" and found it on the walmart App CD
and installed it. Will it be ok? or will I have to reinstall it
with the /net command or such?
Let me know cause I already installed it with kpackage.

When you install Star Office, you need to append the setup command with /net.
So type this "./setup /net"

Then once you install it to /usr/local/whatever, as a user type "./setup" and
it'll install about 4 MB of files in your /home directory. Then you can use
Star Office as a user.

If you need clearer/better info, read the instruction manuel you can download
off of Sun's site. It's in the "Network Installation" section.

Hey, was wondering if anyone could help me with starting StarOffice as a
 user rather than root.

[newbie] HELP, Desperate Plea to mount CDROM!

2000-11-18 Thread S. Stubbs

Hey, it has been a while now and I have not been able to mount my CDROM drive.
I have mdk 7.2. I have one cdrom drive, it is recognized correctly in the
hardware.
It is IOMEGA Zip650 cd writer drive which is an internal IDE writer drive.
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP, this is driving me nuts. I went to a Linux User Group
install fest today, and they spent 6 hours trying to get it to work. They tried
all kinds of
stuff, even not using the supermount, and it still did not work. I am able to
burn
a CD just fine, I burned 2 CDs today, but I cannot mount the CDrom drive just
to
look at the contents of a CD. I still think in my mind that it has something to
do with
permissions and links to CDrom.
Here is my fstab right now, of course the LUG tried all KINDS of config here,
but
since none of it worked I finally have it as this:
 /dev/hdb5 / ext2 defaults 11
 /dev/hdb1 /boot ext 2 defaults 12
 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
 /mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount user, fs=ISO9660, dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0
 /mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount user, fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0
 /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows vfat user,exec,unmask=0 0 0
 none /proc proc defaults 0 0
 /dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0
I have also gone to the Mandrake website and followed the instructions there
for
getting a CDburner to work. I can provide more info if necessary. So what
now???
Could someone reply with a personal troubleshoot session on this??
PLEASE, this is the ONLY PROBLEM I have now, I did get my Samba working
like a champ, and can see both my other windows boxes.
IF i don't get this fixed I will have to GIVE UP on linux, since I will not be
able to view
a CDROM!!! I will not be able to update any rpms from the install CD!!!
PLEASE this is a DESPERATE PLEA for help.

[newbie] bone to pick with Macmillan

2000-11-15 Thread S. Stubbs

Hey, I am a bit peeved. When mandrake 7.2 came out, I went and

Well, being a newbie, I wanted to get a manual or something, and
heard that if you buy a distro, it comes with extra CDs of apps and
stuff, and of course a manual. So I wanted support and all these things.
Well I went to Wal-mart and bought Mandrake 7.2 Complete Retail
box version since it had 4 CDs and manual.
I take home and install. Then I started having a few quirks and problems,
of course I did mandrake update to update the prerelease version of
kde to final 2.0 version, and other stufff.
Well, still had a few quirks. I missed my Webmin tool from 7.1 and
I missed a few networking tools from 7.1 but alas they were no where
to be found on the walmart distro. I was quite perturbed and disheartened.
Finally late last night I went and viewed my downloaded ISOs of
7.2, and FOUND WEBMIN and MORE STUFF on the downloaded version!!
So, since my walmart distro was not quite right, I took a chance and
installed afresh the downloaded 7.2. NO MORE prerelease kde!!!
I had hardly any updates necessary!! I got more networking stuff, everything
seems to be running better!! The downloaded version is MUCH better.
I am definitely PEEVED that I spent $$ for the walmart version and would
like to know if there is a way to contact macmillan since I think they are
misleading people about the retail box version!!
I am just an inquiring "newbie" mind, saying my rant.

Re: [newbie] bone to pick with Macmillan

2000-11-15 Thread S. Stubbs

Yes, yes Adrian Smith!! Here is story of mandrake 7.2.
Well, they wanted to get it in the stores by Christmas, so it appears
that the boxed 7.2 complete that appeared in wal-mart so quickly
has these features:
it is not kde 2, it is prerelease, not quite kde2.(you have to use
mandrake update to get kde2).
Also, it is a desktop version("complete" is misleading). It does not
have the servers and much networking stuff on the install.
 It does however install
the docs and on the extra CDs it will install staroffice 5.2 and adobe
acrobat reader, and some other desktop kinds of stuff. Also on
CD are 4 linux books docs.
I installed it, but it did NOT have webmin tool, and it did not install
much of advanced networking stuff. I also had to do mandrakeupdate
right off, to get up to kde2. I had many little quirks with this distro, so
I installed my downloaded 7.2 ISOs right over this version, the downloaded
7.2 ISOs do Have my greatly needed Webmin tool, kde 2 final
and more server stuff. I think my downloaded ISOs are much better, even
though I will have to get staroffice 5.2 as separate package.
Also only couple of mandrake updates necessary for the latest and
greatest.
I hope this information helps you. If I were you,
I would download the ISOs or buy ISOs
from web if at all possible, NOT from Wal-mart.
This way you can be assured of getting the latest version.

This whole thing has me wondering also. I bought 7.0 7.1 at Office Depot or
Office something (they all look alike) for $20 a pop and had no problems at all
with any of the CDs, installs or anything. now I'm seeing people on this list
saying that the 7.2 they are getting at the store doesn't have all the features
and all sort of other strange stuff.. what up with this? I suppose
Macmillan, like any other company, is going to box anything it thinks it can
sell, but if this release has problems why is Mandrake letting them release it
(i'm assuming they have some say in the matter) as this is just going to bouce
back and slap Mandrake in the end. I'm very very very happy with 7.1 and i
hope to be one more very (very cubed) happy with 7.2. i was gonna buy the
boxed version (since the manuals are not bad - and the install instuctions are
so detailed even i installed 7.0 right the first time) but now me thinks i
should just go with the disk from linuxcentral or something..

[newbie] STILL cannot mount CDROM!!!

2000-11-12 Thread S. Stubbs

Please read addendums below to my story:

Please if someone who is expert can assist here is the problem.
I am running mandrake 7.2 complete retail box from walmart,
and I use bootmagic for bootloader.
my hardware config:
2 IDEharddrives,
hda has windoze
hda also has linux swap
hdb has linux boot, and linux root and all linux
I have one cdrom drive it is a Iomega Zip650 cdwriter drive, it is
an internal IDE writer drive, and I can
confirm that it is functioning fine since I used it to install the mandrake
7.2.
My cdrom drive and floppy drive are unable to be mounted, I get somekind
of permission to access is denied kind of message. This is even logged
in as root.
Here is current fstab:
/dev/hdb5 / ext2 defaults 11
/dev/hdb1 /boot ext 2 defaults 12
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=ISO9660, dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0
/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows vfat user,exec,unmask=0 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0 0

Next, here is what results from the commnand,
ls -l /dev/cdrom
result:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Nov 6 01:24 /dev/cdrom -hdc

In the konqueror file manager , I have
su to root and using this manager have gone to the /mnt
directory. I have this in the window:
cdromrwxrwxrwxroot... root
disk.rwxrwxr-x...root...root
floppyrwxrwxrwx..root...root
windowsrwxrwxrwxroot...root.

When I attempt to click on the cdrom or the floppy, I get this
for answer box:
unable to enter file:/mnt/cdrom.
You do not have access right to this location.

Also I have su to root in the terminal and done this:
cd /mnt/cdrom
I get this:
bash: cd: /mnt/cdrom:Input/output error

I type in mount /mnt/cdrom
I get this:
mount: /mnt/cdrom already mounted or /mnt/cdrom busy.
mount: according to mtab, /mnt/cdrom is already mounte on /mnt/cdrom

I type this: eject /mnt/cdrom
I get this:
eject: unable to find or open device for: '/mnt/cdrom'
I type this: eject /cdrom
I get this:
eject: unable to eject, last error: Input/output error

My cdrom is working just fine, I installed mandrake with this cdrom
drive, it is recognized in linux harddrake and works fine in windows, it is
dual-boot box. Also when going to cdburning program, the cdrom drive is
definitely
recognized, and even shows contents of an inserted CD when browsing
in the program. Also when using the make boot floppy GUI tool the floppy will
in fact work fine, but on my own it will not.

BIG NOTE HERE:I am having also Identical problem with the floppy, it too
also has icon with lock on it.
Now this the problem that I am having.
As a result the rpmdrake cannot find the cdrom..
Thus I am unable to install rpm, and I am unable to look at any cd or
floppy, and it is getting more urgent to be able to do this..
MY assumption is that this problem has something to do with "supermount".

Addendum#1: I have been to the mandrake url for cdburner help at
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Tutorial/CDburner/pages/
and have performed the command lines exactly as stated.
This has had no effect on the problem I am having with the ability to mount the
cdrom drive. This also has not done anything to help with the identical problem
with mounting the floppy drive. However I did perform all the command lines
as instructed at the mandrake tutorial.

Addendum #2 I have gone to fstab and added the word user into the
line for the cdrom and the line for flopppy, I added "user" after the
supermount
word. There is hope, I went and tried to view a data filled floppy. Success
with the floppy although it took a long time to see the contents of the floppy,
I did get to view the contents.
There is no longer a lock on the /mnt/cdrom directory. I have gone and tried
to view a data CD in the CDrom drive, however nothing shows up when I go
to the /mnt/cdrom directory. I have tried several of the mdk 7.2 CDs in the
drive.
There is one good indication though, I am able to eject the cdrom from the
drive
using the "eject cdrom" command at a terminal.
When I go to the CDrom icon on the desktop, it will open up to the /mnt/cdrom
directory but there is nothing there(with dataCD inserted in drive).
Please PLEASE I implore anyone to help me with this problem. It is getting more
necessary to install rpms from the mdk applications CDs and it just won't
work!!
If SOMEONE ANYONE out there could help me troubleshoot this mounting
problem I would really appreciate it. I have gone and reviewed so many docs
and info on mounting in linux it makes my head spin.

ANY HELP, THANKS...

program, so I left, and when I did returning to root's desktop, suddenly
for no reason the menu that pops up from the k start button was missing
most of the kde related icons and menus. I HAD NOT DONE ANYTHING
to cause the menu to be missing half of the menu items.
I was devastated. I did nothingrelated to working with the menu.
So I hurredly logged out of root, did not save session and logged back in
as user to see if something had happened to the user menu, but I checked
and it was all there. So then I logged back in as root to see if the menu
would come back and it has not. Here is all that pops up from the kde
start button using root: listed from bottom(just above K) to top:
logout
lock screen
about kde
panel menu
run
quick browser
recent documents
bookmarks
applications
amusement
Please help I did nothing to remove all these menu listings but I need them
back as root,
here are the ones I need back:
home directory
help
control center
terminals
office
networking
multimedia
documentation
configuration

Re: [newbie] supermount-- I am unable to mount cdrom and floppy

2000-11-11 Thread S. Stubbs

Yes I have been to that very exact page at mandrake demos, and typed in exactly
what
it said to do here
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Tutorial/CDburner/pages/
However that has not solved my problem with accessing the drives, I have
the problem with both the cdrom and the floppy drive. It has something to do
with the "supermount" feature/ hmm, should i say bug.
I am really getting tired, I have received many replies to my many posts about
this at different sites. I have tried most everyone of the possible fixes.
It is to no avail.
and if you are wondering if my cdrom is detected by linux? Yes, it is listed
properly in the system info.
And then the question, why am I having the same problem with the floppy??
ONLY thing that correlates is that both cdrom and floppy have "supermount"
listed on them in the fstab file.
So WHAT DO I DO, anyone have a clue??
I am really disgusted with this, is there someone at mandrake to talk to??
Please advise.

I have the same problem and fortunately I discovered the solution in the
mandrake page; it is a bug of kudzu; you must run linux as root, see the
name of your problematic cdrom under linux (probably cdrom or cdrom2) and
then type the next order (I suppose that the name of your cd driver under
linux is cdrom, if not change for the correct one, ins. cdrom2, cdrom3..)

cd /dev rm cdrom ln -s scd0 rom

To the question that the linux gives you say yes...

And now, everything is runing ¡I hope!; If you still have problems se the
next mandrake page:
http://www.linux-mandraque.com/en/demos/CDburner/pages

Have luck

Asunto: [newbie] supermount-- I am unable to mount cdrom and floppy

/dev/hdb5 /ext2 defaults 11
/dev/hdb1 /boot ext 2 defaults 12
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=ISO9660, dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0
/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows vfat user,exec,unmask=0 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0 0

Next, here is what results from the commnand,
ls -l /dev/cdrom
result:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Nov 6 01:24 /dev/cdrom -hdc

In the konqueror file manager , I have
su to root and using this manager have gone to the /mnt
directory. I have this in the window:
cdromrwxrwxrwxroot... root
disk.rwxrwxr-x...root...root
floppyrwxrwxrwx..root...root
windowsrwxrwxrwxroot...root.

When I attempt to click on the cdrom or the floppy, I get this
for answer box:
unable to enter file:/mnt/cdrom.
You do not have access right to this location.

Also I have su to root in the terminal and done this:
cd /mnt/cdrom
I get this:
bash: cd: /mnt/cdrom:Input/output error

I type in mount /mnt/cdrom
I get this:
mount: /mnt/cdrom already mounted or /mnt/cdrom busy.
mount: according to mtab, /mnt/cdrom is already mounte on /mnt/cdrom

I type this: eject /mnt/cdrom
I get this:
eject: unable to find or open device for: '/mnt/cdrom'
I type this: eject /cdrom
I get this:
eject: unable to eject, last error: Input/output error

My cdrom is working just fine, I installed mandrake with this cdrom
drive, it is recognized in linux harddrake and works fine in windows, it is
dual-boot box. Also when going to cdburning program, the cdrom drive is
definitely
recognized, and even shows contents of an inserted CD when browsing
in the program. Also when using the make boot floppy GUI tool the floppy
will
in fact work fine, but on my own it will not.

ANY HELP, THANKS...

Addendum: I have been to the mandrake url for cdburner help at
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Tutorial/CDburner/pages/
and have performed the command lines exactly as stated.
This has had no effect on the problem I am having with the ability to mount the
cdrom drive. This also has not done anything to help with the identical problem
with mounting the floppy drive.
Obviously it is some kind of bug or flaw in the supermount, or I am just an
idiot. I have become so furious at this problem I have considered just putting
windoze back.
If SOMEONE ANYONE out there could help me troubleshoot this mounting
problem I would really appreciate it. I have gone and reviewed so many docs
and info on mounting in linux it makes my head spin.

ANY HELP, THANKS...

Re: [newbie] O.K. here's my problem

2000-11-10 Thread S. Stubbs

Just to let you know I have a Iomega ZipCD 650 cd writer drive
and I am using mdk 7.2.
For informative purposes, the drive is recognized by this distro
upon installation.
It does work in this distro, but currently I am having newbie problems
getting to mount the cdrom drive and the floppy drive, the problem
mostly is due to supermount, which many have recommended that
I remove from the fstab, but as newbie I don't know exactly what to do.
This supermount is also affecting my floppy the same way.
I have not been able to access cdrom or floppy on my own yet. However
if there is a program, like cdburning prog or like the makebootfloppy prog,
the drives are mounted and work through the program.
All I know now, as a newbie, is that this "supermount" thingy is a
pain in butt, and I am having a time dealing with it.

Subject: [newbie] O.K. here's my problem

Just installed 7.2 and have the following problems:

1) Can't access fd0. I get the following: "Can't enter directory /mnt/floppy"
This wasn't a problem under 7.0. It will let me format floppies though.

2) I've got a Zip drive connected to the computer. Works fine under Windoze
but when I try to install it under LM 7.2 I get the following error msgs for
ppa and imm:

modprobe -v imm
/sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/scsi/imm.o
Using /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/scsi/imm.o

/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/scsi/ppa.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/scsi/ppa.o: insmod ppa failed

3)I've got an ActionTec 56K PCI modem installed and I have to type the
following every time I want to get on line:

setserial /dev/modem uart 16550A port 0xdc00 irq 11

I have it as the last line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local but it doesn't init the modem

This also, wasn't a prob. in 7.0

Now a question:
Has anyone tried using the ZIP CD 650 cd rewritable and the USB version of
the ZIP 100 drive in 7.2?

Any help will be greatfully appreciated.
