Try mousedrake to reconfigure it.

2003-06-18 Thread Troy Davidson
This has happened to me before. I solve it by doing the following:

1. CTRL-ALT-F1 (Drop out of X)
2. Login as Root
3. Type 'mousedrake'
4. Click 'ok'
5. CTRL-ALT-F7 (Get back into X)

Doing the Mousedrake reinitializes the mouse.

I used to lose the mouse with my KVM, and always went to a session using
CTRL-ALT-1, logged in as root and ran mousedrake. That'll reset the driver
and resync, and that's what I needed with my problem. Maybe that'll do
something for you as well.

[newbie] kde 3.1 installation and config

2003-02-27 Thread sean jacobs
i was wondering if perhaps someone could let me know where the config files
for the kde start menu are at...i just compiled and installed 3.1 last
night but can't figure out how exactly to add all the applications that were
in my old kde menu to my new one. it would be much easier if i could just
cut/paste some lines from one config file to another rather than using the
menu editor application to add everything i need. plus i've already
overwritten most of the old kde binaries so i'm not sure exactly what/where
everything is that used to be in the menu. i've tried going through ~/.kde
and even copied that directory from another user account who hadn't used kde
3.1 yet to my own in hopes that it would provide the same menu configuration
but i was wrong.

also i can't seem to figure out how to make the new kdm boot kde 3.1.i was
not able to add fluxbox to kdmrc for 3.0 because it would get overwritten
after every reboot and when it would not boot kde 3.1 for some reason, i
started using the kdm for 3.1. now it will boot fluxbox but kde 3.1 just
makes the screen flicker a few times but goes back to the kdm login,
eventhough i can boot kde 3.1 with a startx from console. if anyone can
offer some insight on either of these matters it would definately be
appreciated, thanks

You have broken your Mandrake menu system by installing kde from source. The
rpm packages are provided for a reason because they contain the mandrake menu
configuration information. If you want to compile KDE from source AND keep
your Mandrake menus, you should rebuild the Mandrake src.rpms and install
from rpm.

You may be able to copy the contents of /usr/share/applnk-mdk to
/usr/share/applnk, but my experiencesays that msec or something will change
it back, or perhaps link /usr/share/applnk to /usr/share/applnk-mdk.

Did you install to /usr, or elsewhere?

Why would you install from source instead of grabbing the rpms from the Club
(if you're a member) or Texstar? Installing something as complex as KDE from
source just breaks too much in the distro because of the way Mandrake
integrates it.

Ummm.. I'm having a bit of a problem with my recently installed

For example, i need to type an a with an accent (spanish chars)
and after a rather long while experimenting with keyboard settings,
language and deadkeys - nodeadkeys stuff, i still can't get KDE
to help me type my e-mails correctly.

I can type perfectly on a text terminal outside of X, i can do it also
on Gnome, but KDE, all i get it to do is to print the accent like it's
a character of it's own: ´´´ i need letters under those!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS: yeah, i know if it ain't broken, don't fix it. I should have kept

Hi

I have just installed KDE 3.1 from the Mandrake Club site.

I now have the following problems :-
* On boot-up I get the message KDEInit could not launch 'kfmclient'

fails. After repeating the procedure a couple of times the toolbar freezes,
although the desktop is still available.
However, as root, I can open the floppy.

What has happened and how can I fix it.

What was the installation method used? I have had 9.0 installed for
some time, but have been (recently) using urpmi for most upgrades,
and might I say in passing that urpmi now works better than it has
done in previous versions. Getting the paths correct for urpmi is a
major issue, but once you understand where to look and how to
specify the sources it works pretty well. Prior to 9.0 I had
trouble with it - usually as a result of broken paths, incomplete
or incompatible sites, lots of which had connection issues of their
 own, it seemed.

I am new to Mandrake, not to Linux, but urpmi and the rpmdrake for it
got the best of me, as rpmdrake uploaded all the packages, while I
had to sit there and ok the lack of md5sums for every package. Then,
it found a dependancy it could not correct, and exited, flushing all
the uploaded rpms.

I then bagged the easy way, and settled down to upgrade KDE using
rpm, rpmdrake to search the CDs, and rpmfind for everything it
couldn't satisfy.

It wasn't too hard as upgrades go, you should have seen the source
upgrade to KDE 3.0.5 on RH8.0, and I never got it perfect. RH broke
KDE, and I left.

Now, maybe I need to add more sources to urpmi, but its not all that
convienent to yell about, as to befuddle me is to really lose a
newbie.

Re: [newbie] KDE 3.1

2003-02-07 Thread Rob Blomquist

Also, when it comes to upgrading kde, it's best to install the
library components first, like libqt3, libarts, and so forth,
preferably all at the same time (rpm -Uvh libqt3* libarts* ) and be
sure to specify the *devel packages as well. After those are
installed, then install the other components - first kdelibs,
kdebase and then the rest, as is recommended on the kde website. It
is a good idea to install both the base and the devel pair
 simultaneously on the command line.

If you load all the necessary rpms in one directory, and do a rpm -Uvh
*, rpm will sort out the dependancies, and see that everything is
installed in the right order. That's how I do it.

would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.

There are none for Mandrake yet - the URL

http://www.kde.org/info/3.1.html

points to SuSE binaries only. (It will doubtless be mirrored early
tomorrow morning in

ftp://download.uk.kde.org/pub/kde/unstable )

This might not be a bad thing - although I'm not clear where all the
3.0.x 'problems' and 'bugs' are (I've had no difficulties) I wouldn't
touch an alpha version with a bargepole ;)
