[newbie] kmail problem

2005-04-07 Thread Q.H. Wang
Hi Folks,

Recently I got a problem that I could frequently receive emails, which, I
guess, are supposedly sent to my colleague. Although most of those emails are
spam mails, I believe, it's kinda annoying. Because I don't know whether this
problem comes from? Could anyone tell something by analysizing the following
property from one of those emails. It's a problem of my Kmail, or my mail
server or the guy deliberately sent those emails to me. What could give me a
hint is, my email box does appear in the X-Real-To area. Many thanks.

Bests,

Q.H.

That is also probably the answer to your question. The X-Real-To appears to
be the MTA's header that signals what it received in the mail header as the
target or To: of the mail. The To: line that you see in Kmail is actually
part of the body of the mail message, not the mail header. MTA's use the
header and not the body to direct mail to the recipient so the body piece is
ignored, except perhaps by your Kmail filters and the like.

So, it appears that some spammer has figured out that he can send mail to you
with a fake To: line in the body and try to avoid spam filters in that
fashion. I have had this happen in my system as well with spammers forging
From: lines in the body instead in an attempt to bypass spam filters. Since
my MTA actually filters on the headers, it doesn't work but I do see the
results.

You might want to create another filter and make it filter on the body and
simply dump all messages that appear to be for your colleague.

Sheesh. Have you ever, even *once*, seen someone with complaints like this

You are wasting resources, time, and missing out on a whole lot more fun with

[newbie] kmail - delayed send

2005-03-15 Thread Paul Kaplan
Is there any way to have kmail send a message at some defined time in the
future?
I often write a message that I don't want sent until a specified time.  MS
Exchange allows a message not to be sent before a specified time, but I
haven't found a similar feature (yet) in kmail.

[newbie] KMail configuration

2005-03-09 Thread Anne Wilson
I never noticed it with the older version of kmail, but now I'm seeing that
some kmail users are displaying Mandrake's footer message in full and others
have it as an attachment. I presume there's a setting somewhere for this?
I'd really rather keep that paper-clip display for things that have a real
attachment, and I see that I am one of those mis-using it - if you can call
it a mis-use.

said, its the same in knode, I can't start any new articles there

Thanks again for any help

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I ended up renaming my .kde folder,
logging out and back in again to recreate the .kde folder. Then started
copying over *rc files until I found the problem which appeared to be my
emailidenties. For some reason, something didn't like my sig anymore.
However, it appears that all is almost back to normal, just some config
changes in my kde setup.

2005-02-23 Thread Chris
I hate to keep adding to this thread all on my own, but I thought maybe
this info would possibly be of help to anyone trying to assist me. I
pulled up knode and I have the same reaction when trying to start a new
article as I do when trying to start a new message in kmail. All other
functions work though.

I've gone so far as to reboot to see if I could clear anything out of
the system unfortunately it didn't work. Another odd thing is that when
restarting Kmail even if I have it set to show long headers it wants to
show full headers when restarted. Any help would be much appreciated at
 this time.

 Chris

I'm not sure I can help you Chris.
But last week, I couldnt add contact to the address book. It said that some
process used it. So, I check the ~/.kde/ directory and delete some lock
files. In your case, you might also want to clear the sent-folder? Or, you
said you're using imap server? Maybe the server needs to be restarted.

[newbie] KMail addressbook question

2005-01-23 Thread Julie Sloan

Hi (I'm bck)

In ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/ I found not only one ./std.vcf, but also
./std.vcf2, ./std.vcf3, etc, on up to -7 or -8. Why? And do I only need to
keep the one without a number appended, or the one with the highest number, or
all of them?

thanks,
Julie

(is it top posting if I'm quoting from a different thread?)

The folder is called kabc and the file is probably std.vcf

They all look the same to me. Don't know why you would need more than the

[newbie] Kmail Problem

2005-01-09 Thread John Bowden
Ok 2 Kmail questions probably not related.
1, recently when I start kmail (when machine is first booted up) I get this
message box KDEInit could not kontact-Kmail.sh. Kmail stil starts up and
down loads any new mail and seems to work ok. I click ok and the error msbox
goes away. There is generaly 5/6 konqueror and 1 gaim sessions starting up at
the same time.
2, When I leave the Linux box alone for long periods running Kmail ( set to
check for mail every 5 mins), and internet radio through amorok, Kmail seems
to take for ever to complete a new mail check. I noticed this just berfore
going to bed and so am shutting the pc down, so I dont know if it completes
the new mail check.

Can't speak to this, but I would try to uninstall and reinstall

Perhaps you have chosen a stream that is eating all your bandwidth. What are
your connection specs? Amarok has some pretty high quality streams by
default, and a slow connection could become quickly bogged down.

[newbie] Kmail not forwarding with full headers

2005-01-06 Thread Chris
Greg, did some checking and KDEbug 57008 has been submitted previously for
this. The fix is to select full headers in the view menu, shutdown and
restart Kmail, this will display the full message headers in forwards whether
in-line or as an attachment no matter what other header view mode you select.

Thought you may be interested. I did add a comment to the bug that this
problem still exists in 1.7.1.

[newbie] Kmail question

2005-01-04 Thread Chris
I asked this in the kdepim-users list but no reply yet, possibly someone here
can assist me, below is what I sent:

When forwarding a message either in-line or as an attachment, the full headers
are sometimes shown and sometimes not, most times not.  Since I mostly use
this to forward phishing msgs to certain addresses, its important that the
full headers are shown.  I've gone through the composer settings for Kmail
and haven't been able to get this to work yet.  If I remember correctly in
the previous version I was running this wasn't a problem as the full headers
were always shown in the attachment.

Can someone enlighten me on what changes I need to make to get this to work
correctly.

Thanks

If comcast is anything like Earthlink, shouldn't it be
smtpauth.comcast.net? Also, the only EL will work for me in Kmail is in the
security setting Encryption is set to TLS and Authentication is set to
login In the EL support group they tell me that CRAM-MD5 will work,
however it gives me the same error as you.

Nope, smtp.comcast.net is correct. I need TLS and CRAM-MD5 to authenticate.

I finally found a how-to. I believe the problem was that I wasn't specifying

authentication. The same user id, password works fine with pop3 - I
have no problem fetching mail using KMail. I'm probably mindlessly
 missing something

 Thanks!
 Brandon

If comcast is anything like Earthlink, shouldn't it be smtpauth.comcast.net?
Also, the only EL will work for me in Kmail is in the security setting
Encryption is set to TLS and Authentication is set to login In the EL
support group they tell me that CRAM-MD5 will work, however it gives me
the same error as you.

[newbie] Kmail and Mailing Lists

2004-09-11 Thread Greg Meyer
I am on Mandrake 10.0 CE, fully updated, with a few of Charles Edwards updated
packages, but with the KDE 3.2.2 that is in the main repository.

I am having trouble with Distribution Lists in KMail, and if anyone else is
using them successfully, I would appreciate your help. I used to recall that
you could manage the lists from the kaddressbook, but I cannot see anywhere
how to do that. The only place I see to create them is in the message
addressing window of a new message. Is there another place to manage them
that I am missing.

Also, when I create a list, and use it to send a new message, kmail is
appending my default domain to the address, and not exploding it to its
component addresses like I would expect.

Can anybody help?

Look in the Contacts folder or sidebar button and you should be able to
manipulate from there. I think. : P

Well, I installed kontact and now the list explodes to the individual

kontact just to use a distribution list.

I am not sure. I have been using Kontact with 10.0 from the start and do not
know if you can do it with just kmail installed. Kontact seems to be integral

Yes, I am not sure why the KDE folks did that, but I kinda like Kontact

me a bit longer to do an installation, since I select individual packages

Every time I've had difficulties with anything KDE, I would logoff and
login as root (or do it from the console) and rename the .kde directory
within my home directory so that KDE would rebuild itself; then again,
as well, I also make sure that the /etc/ld.so.conf is up to date and I
run ldconfig to rebuild the lib path cache; generally, it all becomes
happy-dappy again and you can then copy over your KMail prefs and
whatnot to the new .kde directory; at least it's worth a shot, right
mate?

I'm getting confused by the threading here, but in case you missed my post to
the hijacked thread:

Rebooted? I think it may not be kmail--you may have a hardware problem.
Something about kmail may be accessing a specific part of your hd, or using a
specific amount of cpu or memory, or ethernet, and that is the cause of the
crash.
The reason I say this, a few years ago, sometimes when I tried to transfer
files from-or-to one of the computers on my network I would get a spontaneous
reboot. Now, the weird part is, more than one computer was doing this, but
one specific computer was always involved (either it would reboot or the one
being transferred to or from would reboot). After a couple of months of
pulling my hair out, I changed the network card in that machine and the
problem went away!
|
| What is up with that ?? I have never had any problems with Kmail.

Well, any problem I've ever had was cured by deleting my /home/username/.kde
and logging back in.

I have had that also in fact during this episode I had one which I
removed and still no sending. Also I have had the case where whenever
I click on a good message it goes away and becomes blank. I assumed
that may have happened again but since I wasn't having any luck I
removed the blank message and the next one came up good but still
wouldn't send.

Q2: What type of folders should I use : maildir or mbox?

Alan, I know in the KDE control center there is a place where
 you can set all
your file associations, but what has always worked for me is
 to:

  1. Open /home/youruser
  2. Right click, pick create new HTML file (name it anything
you
 want)
  3. Right click on this file, pick Edit file type
  4. Pick whatever browser you want to open it with, and move
it
 to the top of
the list. Its now the default

Now, when you open a (html) URL in Kmail, it will use the
 default browser.

Thanks Ron for the suggestion. I will do what you suggest of

other things appear to have gone walkabout, it might be a good
idea to reinstall Mandrake 10. This is a messy option as
several things have to be installed manually and then the whole
lot will have to be updated using urpmi - will let you know how
 it works out.

 Thanks again

Thanks again Ron. Did a reinstall and the urls and jpgs burst

but the main problem is solved.

A friend of mine (in electronics) said that when you solder
connections on the end of a cable and when finished you find you
have forgotten to put a fitting on the cable first, then having
to do it again is penance for not doing it properly in the first
place. This is the price I am paying with Mandrake right now.

The next time (if there is a next time), create a new user and see if

somewhere safe, and rename your .kde directory in the /home for your old
username. Restart kde and log in as your old username, and everything will
probably work when kde creates a new .kde for your old username. If it does,
remove your new user. Be aware you will lose all your kde settings (hence
the backup of your address book--you can backup and maybe recover your mail,
also).

[newbie] Kmail problem

2004-07-30 Thread Alan Dunford

I need a little help, please, in setting up Kmail again. A
couple of days ago I added a Smart Media card reader to one of
my USB ports and (I assume a bug in the driver) as a result the
machine would not then boot. Later the USB driver was updated
and I noted that a bug had in fact been corrected.

The start up problem was then sorted using Mandake 10's CDs to
upgrade the OS and then all was well except that previously I
had been able to fire up a URL within Kmail and now cannot do
so. I don't remember having to do anything previously to create
a link here (I think to Konqueror) and cannot find anything to
help in the help files.

I imagine the problem is very simple and basic but it is also
proving frustrating and annoying.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Alan

Alan, I know in the KDE control center there is a place where you can set all
your file associations, but what has always worked for me is to:

1. Open /home/youruser
2. Right click, pick create new HTML file (name it anything you want)
3. Right click on this file, pick Edit file type
4. Pick whatever browser you want to open it with, and move it to the top of
the list. Its now the default

Now, when you open a (html) URL in Kmail, it will use the default browser.

HTHs!

[newbie] kmail lock file

2004-03-23 Thread Bill Winegarden
Hi,
When I boot into LM10 I have been getting a 'KMail can't start because it's
already on a process as shown in the lock file' type message. I initially
tried to 'kill' the process but it isn't acutally running. So I just delete
the lock file. I can't understand why this should be happening since I always
manage a clean shut down.

Has anyone else had this problem. Not major, just a nuisance.

tia,
Bill W.

[newbie] KMail crash on 10.0

2004-03-20 Thread Philip Cronje
Hi

I'm having a problem with KMail after I upgraded one of the machines here that
previously ran MDK 9.2. Before the upgrade, KMail chugged happily along and everything
was fine and dandy.

Now, however, whenever I try to navigate in the message list, or compose a new e-mail,
it crashes and prints the error message:

relocation error: kmail: undefined symbol:
_ZN17Syntaxhighlighter16DictSpellCheckerC1EP9QTextEditbb6QColorbS3_S3_S3_S3_

to the console. Something with the way the spell checker is set up? I looked at the
problem briefly, but I don't really have time to mess around with it a lot. Not now,
anyway.

So I'm kind of hoping someone else knows what's going on :)

Note to self: when KDE changes their package names around, the old packages do *not*
get updated. :P

It'd slipped my mind that KMail had gone from kdenetwork-kmail to kdepim-kmail, so the
old version's libraries were suddenly out of whack. :P

KMail is part of the kdenetwork package. the binary is under /usr/bin

Well I figured out that kmail was contained in kdenetwork so I
uninstalled it, then reinstalled kdenetwork. Didn't make any

X with top. Running urpme to remove X, a couple of programs wouldnt
allow that reinstalled with urpmi and no difference. Now I have two
options install XFree86 with a src rpm or wipe the entire installation,
both seem to me like disasters. Help?

Hoyt, the updatedb process updates the slocate database with all of the files
that are on the system. However, that usually only runs once per night so if
the file has been removed and updatedb has not run yet, slocate will show an
improper location for a file that is not there.

Run updatedb as root from CLI and then do a locate kmail and you might find
that it is not on your system.

[newbie] Kmail again; unable to send

Okay, please bear with me; I seem to be having one of my stupid days ...

might meet my needs better than Evolution has. Fine.

I'm receiving mail just fine, filtering it, blah, blah, blah, blah ...
however, I just went to send a message and I get errors. (See below)

I know this isn't rocket science, and I've successfully set up a
multitude of e-mail clients for SMTP before, but for some reason this is
just escaping me.

With every attempted send, I get:

Sending failed:
Unknown error Unexpected server response to EHLO command. The server
responded: Unknown command
The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the
problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox'
folder.
The following transport protocol was used:

and that's it. I'm just using my standard smtp address for my ISP's
server (and have double- and triple-checked for spelling errors there),
and the server doesn't require any special log-in procedure of which I'm
aware (didn't set any up when I was in Evolution), so I'm just at a loss
as to what stupid thing I may be overlooking, or if there's some quirky
setting in Kmail that I'm just not seeing.

Any ideas as to what I'm glossing over? (And, since you will
theoretically shortly be receiving this via a send from Evolution, I
think we can rule out server difficulties...)

There is another thing that I have discovered by accident. If you configure
the filter rules and in the box where the address or words are placed if
there is a space behind them when you put the cursor there. the rules will
not work.

Make certain that the cursor in the address or words is directly at the last
letter, don't have a space.

I couldn't understand why a couple of rules didn't work, and that was the
problem. Remove the space and the filters worked.

Maybe this will help.

[newbie] Kmail and Firefox

2004-02-22 Thread Christophe Rhein
Strange...
When I click on a ling in Kmail... It saves the webpage in a folder
file:/home/rhein/.kde/share/apps/kfmexec/tmp/
and then I get the Select Profile window from Firefox(I have one profile in
it)... And end the road because the browser is open so I get a in 'use' error
message.
I looked at the Kmail settings but I don't see what to do.
Please help
Christophe

Is this message likely to be html? If so and it is a trusted source
you may like to try my solution. I create a folder for those mails
and a filter to put them there. Highlight the folder, then go to
Folder in the menus and enable html - it will not affect any other
folder.

No Anne, it is plain text, and apparently it is a message that can

It's just a warning, ignore it.

Same as when compiling source, you get warnings about the
possibility of a conflict or the possibility of an unreferenced
variable causing grief later down the line, this is a means to let
you know perhaps why things are *not* working.

Glad it's sorted for you. These things can be quite alarming when you
don't know where they come from, can't they?

Below is a message that I find in the source from a Mac machine:-

I wonder what generates this message? KMail? The Mac Machine or what other? I
have had no problems reading the mails from this machine I just wonder about
it.

X-Status: N
X-KMail-EncryptionState:
X-KMail-SignatureState:

THIS MESSAGE IS IN MIME FORMAT. Since your mail reader does not understand
this format, some or all of this message may not be legible.

Thanks in advance for any help.

[newbie] Kmail word wrap

2004-02-05 Thread Peter Watson
I've got this problem with Kmail. Word wrap is set at col 75 and in the
composer window this works fine. But when I see my messages after they are
delivered they are not wrapped at all.

Anyone got ant ideas?

Thanks
