I would like to get everyone's two cents worth about this. I am curious
to know what everyone thinks. Now that Apple has OS X (which is
Unix-based), will drivers for hardware start to become more readily
available as hardware manufacturers start to make drivers for OS X?
Would it be easier to create a Linux driver from a OS X driver, since
the two OS's are much closer than Linux and Window$? I know I am
probably going to open up a whole great big can of worms with this, but
I am curious if things will start to change a little for the better.

OSX is based on FreeBSD, and the BSD license allows for closed
proprietary source and specs. Cross licensing agreements and side
deals between many hardware vendors and M$, also include Apple (mostly
thru agreements with M$). I think while the Linux community of
developers will certainly not be included in any info shared with
Apple, there may be some trickle down affect. For instance, it wasn't
long after QuickTime was ported to OSX, that mysteriously open source
Linux apps (Xine, then Mplayer) also gained the ability to play QT
files.

RE: [newbie] Lets help get some linux drivers.

2002-11-15 Thread Franki

I would be inclined to say no...

Apple maintains an iron grip on apples hardware...

The result being they have almost total control over it..

However, firewire and usb addon's drivers could be of benefit to the linux
community if the developers are pushed to write linux drivers.. all the more
reason to make a list of bad linux hardware and start a concerted effort
to get some attention... (by bad hardware, I mean stuff that could have
linux drivers, but doesn't.. not dumbass stuff like winmodems and
winprinters etc that shouldn't have lin drivers (or win drivers for that
matter :-)

I will keep putting my list together, then I will write a script to aid
contacting the manufactures and letting them know our displeasure.

Hi Guys,

This month, I have emailed 3 different hardware manufacturers asking if they
had linux drivers for their product (I pick one product from their site and
email them about it.)

generally the answer in most cases is no.. but thats not the point, if we
all send 2 or 3 of these emails a month,, how long would it be before they
start considing their lost market??

what do you guys think of this idea???

Its a thought... and I think an important one. nothing is going to

Its a thought... and I think an important one. nothing is going to
happen fast unless we start doing this sort of thing.

It wont achieve anything if we all concentrate on one manufacturer at a
time. People ignore obviously orchestrated assaults like that. In fact
it may annoy them and alienate them further.

Surely, it would be better for each individual to choose three products
a month at random.

And, of course, if something especially annoys you then be sure to let
them know that you'll be avoiding them in future.

and we can keep a numbering system so we know how many emails each

Just keep in mind that those emails aren't going to even make it NEAR a
top-level executive - they're handled by support staff - and upper
management rarely, if ever, listens to support staff. Chances are that
you're only going to piss off some under-paid, under-trained monkey that
handles only email.

Just stating the reality.

Now, on the other hand, if you can obtain lists of top-level executives
in said company structures, that would be a different story. (Or, if you
want to get elaborate, hack their mail server and spam the hell out of
the entire staff - but I shan't go there - I've promised to be a nice
fella for a while).

I beg to differ on that one..

I have worked for two of those win only companies..

in tech and sales.. and the management would find out if we got strange
requests...

if they get 50 linux driver requests a month.. the tech is gonna mention it
to his superviser, who will mention it to his
the some snooping boss will wander down and ask whats going on...

It does happen... I worked for CEA (UMAX) and OCEAN
(http://www.octek.com.hk/)
and I was surprised at how much management did listen if they thought that
there was an issue or money to be made

Ocean has well over 5000 employees and has offices all over the world.. they
are not a small company.
and yet me as a lacky sales and tech guy in Au had several meetings with the
manageing director when he was over.

it really is surprising

one email will do nothing, ten emails will do little, fifty emails and the
tech guy will ask someone what to do about it.. then the ball starts
rolling..

I really need to be able to use my palm from my desktop and haven't figured
out how to do it yet (another email subject). I had emailed palm about a
linux version of thier desktop software and was told that they didn't have
it and most likely wouldn't. If enough people emailed various companies
maybe they would come up with linux versions of thier software.

I've seen some palm connectivity software built into
linux. I think it comes with the office workstation
option in the install. I've never bothered to use it
because I'm tied down to Outlook hehe. Whether it
works with the serial cradle, usb cradle, or both is
another issue. Hope this helps.

I stand corrected. Its late and I'm tired;(

I believe you mean macrovision: the copy protection scheme that ATI
builds into their cards. If I remember correctly the information
provided by ATI to gatos and XFree was incomplete because macrovision is
proprietary; thus no stable ATI.2 drivers with TV-out, no Xfree driver

Also no DRI with my PCI radeon (32mb), I think perhaps that one is
related to a bug in the radeon driver rather than a lack of information
 from ATI.

Check out the gatos-development list sometime and you
