[newbie] Realplayer G2 Beta for linux

2000-01-30 Thread mulerider

I've reinstalled linux (upgrading to mandrake 7.0) and have lost my copy of
realplayer G2 Beta for linux. Can anyone mail me a copy, or point me to the
download location. If their is a version of G2 not in beta I would prefer that
of course.

Thanks

Rick

Well I saved the link to their patch, I guess I'll be fooling with that in a
couple of months. The real player G2 is downloaded is an updated file. The old
G2 was from May, this one is dated Sept. 29. I did get a stutter running it
last night but I'm hoping that was because of heavy internet traffiic.

Meanwhile I'm back to trying to figure out xcdroast. I hope to mount my
windows files in linux and then have xcdroast copy and burn the mandrake 6.1 iso
file I downloaded to windows.

Thanks for the info.

Here's a copy of how my setup at work looks at the windows
 partition. From /etc/fstab:

 /dev/hda1 /mnt/dosvfatdefaults0 0

The important thing to keep in mind is the type "vfat."
This tells Linux that you're looking at a Win95/98 file
 system (fat32) instead of a 16-bit fat.

Thanks for the info John

I was just mounting it with /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos I'll add the extra language.
Now doing this in the /etc/fstab will that add it to my startup menu somehow?

I've printed the documentation that came with xcdroast and find the manual a
little terse. Does anyone know of a location for a better explanation on how
to set up and use xcdroast. I believe I've got the ide SCSI emulation thing
worked out . I'd like to burn a cd this weekend.

It's still nowhere near as easy as win-blows. The hardest thing is installing
progies (well, for me anyway). Even if they're in RPM and you use Kpack, you
still have to find the damn thing after you get it installed. No instant
desktop icons or anything. No, I think we're still safe in our geek status. What
I find really wonderful about Mandrake 6 is it opens the door for us and gives
us a start point to begin learning an otherwise virtually impossible system.
Yet another two cents worth.

type "rpm -qa | grep real" and see what comes up. If
nothing comes up, try changing "real" to "rvplay" in the

would otherwise. Also, having just recently learned how to PROPERLY
create a cron entry (YEAH!!! G) I respect it a lot more.
My next project will likely be a kernel recompile so I can get BOTH
processors on this SMP machine working! :-)
After that, probably recompiling X if Mandrake 6.1 doesn't fix this
little problem I've got with my video card (that was what was
suggested by one of the XFree86 people.)

  I have I am using Mandrake 6.0.

Of the versions of RealPlayer that were listed, it looked to me as if
  the Red Hat 5.2
version was the most likely to be the proper one. As instructed, I
changed the name from rv50_redhat5xi386_rpm to rv50_redhat5xi386.rpm
then typed rpm -i rv50_redhat5xi386.rpm (logged in as root)
I got no error messages (nor any other messages), so I assume it
  installed somewhere.
However, I don't know where it is, nor what it is called. So how do I
get it to work now, or have I done something wrong?

try looking for /usr/bin/realplay (all lower-case.) On my

at least /usr/bin is where Linux is looking for "realplay."

I guess it was RealPlayer 5.0 for LINUX (not G2 -- I found it by
 searching for G2).

Still the question is, after I installed it using rpm -- where is it?

Re: [newbie] RealPlayer G2

I originally installed RealPlayer 5 using rpm -i package nothing
seemed to happen

I tried again to install it using rpm -Uvh

It said that "rvplayer 5.03 is already installed"

(rvplayer is in /usr/bin and is executable). I set up the preferences
as you suggested.

In Netscape, I get an error box:

Netscape: subprocess diagnostics (stdout/stderr)
sh: -c: line 1: unexpected EOF while looking for matching '"
sh: -c: line 2: syntax error: unexpected end of file
 OK

I had earlier tried to set the application to /usr/bin/rvplayer

I did not get any error message or anything, but nothing happened (at
least no sound and no RealPlayer console like you get in Windows).

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: [newbie] RealPlayer G2

1999-08-30 Thread Murray Strome

It looks like, in my machine, the program (rvplayer) is in /usr/bin.
There are two files in /usr/lib/rvplayer: rvplayer.ad and rvplayer.rm
(which look like realplayer sound files). I set up Netscape with the
application at /usr/bin/rvplayer. When I click on a RealPlayer location
(such as www.king.org: listen to KING with RealPlayer 5.0), there is a
short message at the bottom of the screen saying it is downloading, but
nothing happens -- no sound and no RealPlayer console like I get in
Windows.

Any other ideas anyone?

Thanks

uninstall what you have and go to the website listed below to get what
you want. dont go to any other page! then follow the setup directions
given below and it should work right. you dont currently have the same
version everyone else is talking about.

[newbie] RealPlayer G2

1999-08-29 Thread Randolph Way

Hi all! I've just downloaded and installed the G2 for Linux, and configured the
Netscape preferences to treat it as a helper application. But when I click on a
link for it, it opens and I get the following audio clip from the Real
Broadcasting Network: Sorry, but we cannot find the stream you requested on any
of our servers, please check the URL and try again. Does anyone know what's
going on and what I need to do to fix it? TIA

[newbie] RealPlayer G2 5.0 for LINUX

1999-08-29 Thread Murray Strome

I should have been paying more attention to previous listings, but I
couldn't get my sound card working at all till today.

Thanks for your help.

Manny, I have a card just like yours (Aztech Snd Galaxy 16). I could
never
get it to play nice with Linux so I removed it and put it in another PC.
Mine had a jumper to set the card to use the EEPROM settings for the
card,
which I assumed was to turn off PnP. I tried this and saw no change.
I
probably tried every jumper setting and sndconfig setting combination
possible and it would not work. I put in a used Creative Sound Blaster
16
and in a minute had it working under Mandrake 5.3.

If you ever get it working let me know how as I am sick of playing with
it.
By the way the old Panasonic CD drive I had attached to the card gave up
 the ghost.

When I use sndconfig, it tells me that it does not detect a PnP or PCI
card,
so I enter the I/O and IRQs myself. I never bother with the jumpers at
all.
On another note, my original CD-ROM drive dies before I ever did my first
install of Mandrake, but I have since replaced it with one that does not
attach to the soundcard except for the one wire for sound (which I had to
juryrig).

I also manually set all the I/Os and IRQs, but to no avail. It seemed
like I had the right settings several times but I never did hear Linus
talking.I also tried the trick of bumping the mixer volume up with
"aumix" command from the command line. Didn't have any effect. I
replaced the CD w/ an Atapi compliant one and had no problem there either.

(on my harddrive), garbled sound. I also get the same audio with MP2
and 3
files Also, RealMedia files don't automatically open in G2. Any
assistance
would be helpful in both areas.

My sound configuration is fine as far as I can tell. Audio CD's and wav
files play clearly, it's just the .rm, .ram, .mp2, and .mp3 formats that are
garbled to the point of incomprehension.

In that case, it sounds like the software decoder you're using has bugs
in it. What software do you use to decode the MPEG audio files?
