Alrighty.

A wise man once told me that griping the griper was unproductive. To
that wise man, I now offer my apologies, and the offering that this
exchange is in no way an attempt to disrespect his advice.

I've been taking note of this exchange for some time now, and since I
feel like I've pretty well grokked it, I'm going to lay down my wooden
nickel's worth. Since it's a free country and a list-of-liberty and
all.

My first observation is that, Steve, you're an asshole. You love to
wallow in your own mental feces. I don't know what your personal
problems are, but this list and the female members are not your
psychologic dumping ground.

Now if you've got something like this to say to any female on the list,
( being as concerned about bandwidth as you are )my second observation
is that you have the option to go private. You did not do this. Now
where I come from, if you walk up to somebody's girlfriend or wife and
say something like what you've said below to them, you end up with a
black eye and checking out the taste of the local dirt. But of course
you're not going to go private with shit like you've said below, are
you? Because your true aim is not to correct what you propagandize as
OT's or bandwidth transgressions. Your true aim is to hurt and
embarrass Femme to maximum effect; everything else is just a shield or
an excuse. Lack of a private exchange is irrefutable evidence, since a
private exchange in your case would have been setting an example for
OT's or bandwidth transgressions.

I'll tell you this though; if this list was a party or a get together
and we were all together in person, I know for a fact that you would not
have been as courageous as you've been below with your female target.
You may be an asshole, but you're not stupid.

I find in each of the groups and lists I frequent, you get people who

No some things need to be said, and I've received quite a bit of
encouragement from others on this list who found many of her posts
inappropriate for a technical forum. I just don't care for the cutesy
aspect of a young woman flirting on an adult list. I have several friends
in law enforcement and one with the horsemen [RCMP]. Over time they've
remarked when investigating cybercrime, specifically older men caught
seducing young girls online, that often these men thought they were
talking to women considerably older. These seem policemen mentioned
that one of the problems they have to deal with is that women often chat
like young teenage girls online - vis-a-vis some of the exchanges I've
seen on this list with unowho. I just wish to put an end to some of this
nonsense, women shouldn't flirt with strange men in real life, so why
should it be considered proper in an online forum, especially one like
this one? Something I hope you fellas consider before thinking you're
defending a damsel in distress. Methinks she has probably a few issues
to deal with and finding them here is NOT appropriate.

I would suggest that it is time to let this thread die. There are enough other things to address than this type of thing. If you don't like the way some one posts or participates put a filter on. Length of time on the list has little to do with how a post is made. I have been on the list for about 2years now, I find that it is community and that for the most part it is made up of people trying to help others or looking for help. I've been both and I don,t mind adding a little humor to my posts (some might say very little humor). Tongue in cheek is ok too. So folks let's just let it lay for now. Thanks.

My 2c - that's Australian cents so worth about nothing - keep posting,
but maybe think twice so the less tolerant, highly focused individuals
among us don't get all twisted and bitter. I don't think there is a
anyone more genuinely committed to LM and more willing to help, so it
would be a shame to lose you.

As far as I'm concerned, your conduct has been exemplary. You've been a
tremendous help to many here, not only technically, but also a strong
source of moral support. If anything, you've strengthened the list, and
I don't see that as desirable to anybody who's seeking to put a damper
on list enthusiasm. Personally I tend to expect a little more from
people than dry technical details; I also look for a caring and
supportive attitude. If there's anyone on this list that has supplied
both, it's certainly you first and foremost. So my suggestion is that
you continue to conduct yourself as you have in the past, which to me
has left a positive and very adult impression. In other words, don't
let anybody else stop you from being who you are.

Best Regards Always,

Lyvim

We're a bunch of kittens here ;-)

Check /etc/fstab

For your floppy you should have a line something like

/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=vfat,exec,--,user
0 0

(that should all be one line, BTW)

Note that's only a suggestion - things may be different in 8.2.

Alternatively, open the Mandrake Control Centre, click Hardware -
Mount Points - Removable Media - Options and check you have user
and supermount checked. If that doesn't work, disable supermount
and see if you can mount it manually.

Re: [newbie] I'm Locked Out!

2002-03-24 Thread Tim Holmes

Did you try to unmount the devices?

Make sure you're not currently accessing something on either one, then run
the commands:

umount /mnt/floppy
eject

That should unmount the floppy so you can eject it manually. The eject command
will unmount the CD, if it was mounted, before it ejects it.

From there, put the floppy back in, and run the command:

mount /mnt/floppy

Then try to access the contents of the floppy.

Similar steps with the CD-ROM. Insert the CD:

mount /mnt/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom
ls -a

I'm not sure how the automount works in 8.2. It may need to be tweaked a bit.

But now I have a question. Why did you upgrade to 8.2? If 8.1 was working,
and you weren't having any problems, why did you upgrade to 8.2?

It seems a lot of people think that as soon a new revision comes out, they have
to upgrade to the new rev. That's not the case. In previous revs that was
needed. There was a good sized jump in kernel capabilities and hardware additions
from 7.2 to 8.0. So there was a need to upgrade there. But from 8.1, to 8.2, I
don't believe there is.

I've noticed, more so this time then with the last two Mandrake revs, that people
are upgrading merely because there's a new version. Micro$HAFT has conditioned
people to think that a new version is out, and you have to upgrade. This is not
the case with Linux.

If you keep your apps and patches up to date, there's no need to upgrade. There
are still people on the list that run on Mandrake 7.2. In my opinion it's still
the most stable of Mandrake's releases. If you upgrade the kernel and apply safty
patches and the like, there's still no need to upgrade. At the time I only went
to 8.0 because of better hardware support.

Hope my suggestions helped.

Why upgrade? [was: Re: [newbie] I'm Locked Out!]

Point taken (and I agree that 7.2 was a damn fine distro). Of
course, if you take the trouble to upgrade your apps (and the
necessary libraries) and choose the best kernel for them (not always
the latest!) then you have no pressing reason to upgrade. OTOH, once
you do that, you are in effect creating your own Linux system anyway.
I usually upgrade my most-used apps to the point that I start
getting serious conflicts, then upgrade the whole distro. It's just
easier that way. I'd rather spend an hour upgrading my whole system
than spend weeks tinkering with it.

As for the analogy with Microsoft upgrades, I think if there's one
thing MS taught me, it was _not_ to upgrade! Apart from my Linux
box, the machines in my office run MS Office 97 on Win 98SE, except
for one which is still on Win95 (in fact the upgrades to 98SE weren't
my idea - they came when we had a hardware upgrade).

We're rough... to idiots. :)

Webster won't agree with me on the definition of idiot but:

Idiot:
(noun) person who won't help themselves; to whit, someone who whines
bitches about said software but refuses to help himself with it find a
solution.
(verb) usage of the word Idiot with regards to said Noun(s).
(adverb) used to describe the behaviour of the above Noun(s).
(adjective) description of the Noun above.
