I am getting output on the 2 front and 2 rear speakers.

Unusual to have a 4 channel , multichannel setup, but it seems you have
output all around though I think it ought to be at least 5 channels,
sometimes 6.

However, when I run alsamixer, it tells me that it has the label:
SigmaTel STAC9708/11

I have no idea .
Is this correct? After all I am using a creative Sound Blaster Live.

not having soundblaster kit in my equipement, I have not experience to
judge by.

# lspci | grep audio

(rev 07)

Perhaps I am using the wrong driver? draksound has selected emu10k1,
and gives me the alternatives of audigy and snd-emu10k1. though
choosing any of these three doesn't make any difference, my volume
still can't be changed from within mplayer or xine.

Well if the alternative drivers do nothing , and your card being such a
popular one, and bound to be fully supported in linux, I'd say there has
to be a problem somewhere with the software to run it.

So your sound output is not just half volume in some cases you don't
have sound as in mplayer, and or xine, or your do have sound but no
volume control in those apps.

If it's just a question of no sound at all in these apps, then you might
need aRts enabled , that can be done inside a setting in MCC. The
function of aRts is to enable multi sound streaming.

Here is what alsa website says about your card.
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=Creative+Labscard=Soundblaster+Live+Valuechip=EMU10K1module=emu10k1

loads of stuff for setting up /etc/modules,conf or whatever it is now
called in MD10.1(did you say?)

I think I would try some of the settings they suggest and see what happens.
I'm going to bed now, so If I think of anything more I will let you know.

John
Thanks John, your help is truly appreciated.
The issue is that while the sound card works, as in producing sound,
which is at a quite respectable level, there is no way of controlling
the volume of the sound except via alsamixer. And then only by the 'Wave
Surround' volume slider: which is the only one that drops the volume to
almost non existant when I slide it to minimum position. I am assuming
that mplayer/xine/etc attempt to control the 'PCM' or 'Master' volume
slide, which only alter the volume by the very smallest amounts when
pushing to maximum/minimum.

I am running 10.1CE. The hardware set-up has not changed since Mdk10, or
9.2 or 9.1 or 9.. etc etc.. and this is the first time I have seen this
specific problem.

Does anyone else have any suggestions of what could be wrong? Or even
what other information I could give to assist in providing a better
diagnosis?

many thanks

[newbie] 10.1 sound volume 'problem'

2004-09-28 Per discussione Azrael
I just did my first fresh install of 10.1 (keeping my former /home), and
everything is working well, except for an issue with the volume.

In xine, or mplayer, when I try to change the volume, the volume does
not get quieter or louder. If I use the gnome volume panel applet,
ditto, can't change the volume. Also the gnome volume control, none of
the sliders seem to control the volume.

I have a sound-blaster live card, and it is using the snd-emu10k1 driver
module.

Can anyone offer suggestions, advice?
many thanks

How about trying alsamixer
just type it in a terminal.
when happy with your sound levels some distros need
alsactl store,
not sure if Mandrake does.
then there is also aumix amd kmix thay may need resetting too.

Thanks for the reply John, though I am afraid it wasn't too useful for me :(
I am not concerned with the volume being too loud or too quiet. The
problem is that I am unable to change the volume in mplayer or xine to a
reasonable extent. I am not sure which exact 'volume meter' is being
changed when I use mplayer/xine volume control, but I can't put it to 0
and have no sound. The change is very little, and only on one channel.

Yes I can use alsamixer to change every conceivable volume item. But I
don't want to resign the rest of my life to having the volume set at
that level.

Indeed, using alsamixer only the 'Wave Surround' item seems to do the
job I want.

So I guess the question, is how do I make the mplayer/xine/anything else
volume controls manipulate the 'Wave Surround' item rather than whatever
other item they seem to be controlling.

The whole volume thing was not a problem in 10.0, so I don't know
exactly why 10.1 is different in this respect, but I'd like to resolve it.

thanks again, and thanks to anyone else who can offer a suggestion

Hmm,
Well, in that case you seem to be saying that you are only getting maybe
2 channels out of 4 or more ( you have suround sound ?) in which case
it's likely a sound driver configuration problem.

You need to determin the sound card and chip and whether the website
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/ that helps people install and
configure sound has anything to say to achieve that.

I know that I have had a similar problem with my MD10.0 OS in that my
Mobo sound chip which is a 5.1 sound channel chip doesn't work too well
with my 2 channel stereo speakers because I have been unable to combine
the 5 channels into 2 and as such I'm only geting a certain distorted
level of harmonic output, not really noticeable with system sound sets,
but very noticeable when playing a quality audio CD. I know that in the
windblows OS's you can pass a command to tell the chip to combine channels.
The question really is whether the same is possible in linux, maybe ?

Maybe yours is a similar problem ?
Just a thought
John

[newbie] Suddenly can't access internet.. DHCP problem?

2004-01-27 Per discussione azrael
Hi, I bought a new adsl router today, and so unplugged the old one, plugged in
the new one, set it all up via the web interface using a computer with WinXP on it.

Set the router to use DHCP, and a WinXP laptop and desktop both are happily
using the internet.

Now.. to my Mandrake 9.2 machine.

Used drakconnect and tried to put in my settings.. and I just can not seem to
get it on the internet. I have tried setting it to use dhcp, or with a static
IP, to no avail.

Worse, I can now access my mandrake box via my windows pc.. so it does have an
IP address.. but the mandrake box cannot access the internet, and the internet
can not access the mandrake box.

Am I insane, or am I missing somehting obvious?

My settings:

gateway: xxx.yyy.50.104
subnet: 255.255.255.248

The windows machines pick up the DNS automatically.. and I have tried this with
mandrake, and by also manually setting the DNS.

Can anyone offer advise.. or slap me round the head for being stupid?

What kind of ADSL router are you running? There are 3 IP ranges reserved for
private networks

10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255

The address that you are showing above is not one of them. It would appear
that the IP address is a routeable IP address. Normally an ADSL router would
assign an IP within the private ranges specified above. Your connection
rates appear quite low, 10.7 kb, 10kb on an internal (I assume 100mbs/10mbs
connection) versus the connect rates that I show below.

My guess, based upon looking at it is that you are getting your IP assigned,
not by DHCP on the router but by tmdns with the zeroconf stuff in Mandrake
Linux. You might want to disable tmdns and retry your connection config.

My ifconfig:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:2C:06:99:CB
  inet addr:192.168.0.101 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
  RX packets:9409459 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
  TX packets:8952324 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
  collisions:0
  RX bytes:2527859668 (2410.7 Mb) TX bytes:721888267 (688.4 Mb)
I swapped back to the old router for a while.

And yes I am using routable addresses, my ISP gives me a chunk of them.
How do I disable tmdns?

I tried formatting the floppy as a DOS floppy and was able to copy files

And if/since it does make a difference, why is Linux even offered as a

It's more the case that linux as an option wouldn't work on a windows
machine if you wanted to use your files there as well.
Hence use a format that can be accessed from a windows PC should it ever
be necessary.

Have you checked to make sure whatever it was you were trying to rip -
the DVD, I'd assume, was clean? And the DVD drive is clean? (That's what
caused me some grief until I realised the damn DVD I rented was a bit

The rip occured without problem. It was while the encoding process was
happening that the system hung - so not related to the dvd itself. Just
converting home movies aswell.. so no chance of it being any dvd

Are you using mencoder for the encoding.
I have had some problems with the more recent cvs versions and have had
to go back to an earlier mplayer install. I kept having stalls during
the rip/encoding which I do as one operation.

 John

I believe it is mencoder yes... not sure what version, but using dvdrip
version 0.50.13 and MPlayer 0.90-3.2.3

The location to which I was encoding was on hde1, and note the dma
errors relate to hde .. so I'm not sure what's up precisely. I certainly
hope my hard drive isn't about to explode.
I have unmounted hde1 and so hde lies idle at the moment.. but I do want
to solve the problems if I can..

 OK,
But I'm afraid I'm no expert on these error log messages, and in my
experience they seldom have much to do with mplayer. The message above
suggests direct memory access , I think dma means that, and maybe
someone can help you set dma up properly, I'm guessing it's a hardparm job.
Certainly dma access is desirable if it relates to dvd/rom and hard
drive as I'm guesing it does , and may be the single cause of your problem.

[newbie] nautilus scripts - where can I find more/share some

2003-01-07 Per discussione Azrael
The scripts in the right click menu in nautilus is rather useful, and I
have made a few very simple ones for myself, and I was wondering if
there was a website where one could share them, and more usefully, find
other ones.

Many thanks,

p.s. In case anyone is interested, I installed mp3toogg (copied a perl
script to /usr/bin/) and made the following script to let me click on
mp3s in nautilus and convert to oggs.:

#!/bin/sh

if test $# -ne 1; then
exit 1
fi

quoted=$(echo -e $NAUTILUS_SCRIPT_SELECTED_FILE_PATHS | awk 'BEGIN {
FS = \n } { printf \%s\ , $1 }' | sed -e s#\\##)

eval /usr/bin/mp3toogg 5 $quoted

[newbie] trouble with samba?

2002-12-17 Per discussione Azrael
trying to use swat to share a directory form linux onto a windows
machine.

Setup is:
1 linux (mandrake 9) machine, plugged into adsl router, port: 10.0.0.9
1 windows (XP) machine, plugged into router, port: 10.0.0.6

smb.conf is attached, but I think it is ok.

The windows machine can /see/ the samba workgroup, but can't connect to
it.

This leads me to assume the router /isn't/ stopping samba from working
between the machines.
But I don't know what is going wrong.

Under mandrake, I had the default firewall running, and even turned that
fully off. But still could not connect.

Any advice? Please?

many thanks!

All I can say is.. GOOD!

It's Free software.. it is supposed to be re-distributable. And doing it
in such an easy way makes it more accessible to people. I have a friend
who bought Mandrake via ebay (uk) who does not have broadband (I would
have burnt them a copy of mine if they had asked!! silly).

However.. if Mandrake want to make a bundle selling on ebay.. they can
do that too.. given a choice I would then (if I was going to) buy from
Mandrake via ebay rather than nameless-person via ebay.

I do take the point that using the content of mandrake's site without
permission is rather cheeky. And this /is/ not right.
Perhaps Mandrake (they monitor everything I say... so they should get
this ;) should e-mail the chap and suggest he not rip off their
copyrighted descriptions/pictures etc etc.

As for selling the stuff.. I'm still for that.. good on the chap.. as
long as he changes the page to not breach copyright. heck.. he should
just link to the relevant sections of Mandrake's site .. would be easier
for him.

I keep saying 'him' and 'he' but could equally be a 'her' or 'she'.

I don't so much have a problem with him/her selling CD's, but I do have
a problem with the blatant plagiarism. Nearly all the text that
describes the system is copied verbatim from the Mandrake website, as
are the screenshots that line the bottom of the ad. I mean, if you're
going to sell something that you can get for free, at least invest a
little time in making your sell a *little* more creative! I would also
be pissed if I found out that somebody was using my screenshot to sell
Mandrake (other than Mandrake) without my permission. Come on, you're so
damn good with it, take your own damn screenshot! Plus, it's only 2 CDs.

You could read Mandrake's website copyright policy:

This website is produced by MandrakeSoft S.A. and MandrakeSoft Inc. with
the help of contributions from many volunteers throughout the world.
Except where otherwise specified, the contents of this site are

should be emulated as /dev/sda, /dev/sdb or whatever; /dev/sda if you have no

and the first step was to reformat it to ext2. If you wish to do the same,
go to diskdrake as root and hit the sda tab (or whatever) - PLEASE be extremely
careful at this stage - and reformat and create partitions as required.
I found that ext3 would not take - ended up as ext2.

After that it should be a simple matter to create a mount point and mount the

for the record:

I just installed mandrake 9 again, a totally clean install, and my
speedtouch wouldn't work.
Then I installed mandrake 8.2, and my speedtouch would not work (even
though it used to under 8.2 once upon a time).

I am totally at a loss.

Someone once asked me to run lspcidrake -v and provide the output, so it
has been attached.

I am looking for a cheap adsl router, however anyone that can do magic
to save me any more expense, will get a pat on the back and a cup of tea.

Good info Ed, but I think I am convinced (note the confidence ;-) that
the problem (at least the first one) is to do with USB rather than this
specific device. I get no lights on the modem and I suspect that there
should be at least this small sign of life if the USB port was active.

I am going to play with it on another machine and also try a printer on
the USB port as a first step. I'll post again with the result.

During the install I told the installer I had one of these and it
brought up a screen in which I could enter my ADSL account

way from where I actually was, so I didn't worry too much about
this, assuming that this was stuff destined for
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets and the like.

It then told me that I needed to download the binary from Alcatel

Did all that. Also read the how-to that comes with this package.
It says I need to put mgmt.o somewhere else which doesn't exist,
so I didn't and suggests I need to download and install some

so I didn't.

So now what? I downloaded speedconnect2.2-1 which has some

OK, but tell me they can't find my modem. It's plugged in, but
with no signs of life.

I installed 9.0 and skipped the network setup.
I then booted into mandrake and placed mgmt.o into /usr/share/speedtouch
Then I went to configure network settings.

I tried to configure alcatel speedtouch usb adsl modem.
It requested cd 1 and installed files, and then completed.
However the connection wouldn't work.

Now as mandrake has a specific option to install the alcatel speedtouch
adsl modem, I assume that this works fairly well.. and that therefore it
is something I am missing.

What should I do to get my adsl connection working?

whoops - slip and Send was pressed too soon!

Did the appropriate piece in the Mandrake Configuration Centre ask you for
 username, password, country etc.?

If all that's been entered the best thing to do is just to ignore all the
Mandrake flapdoodle and do two things:

 i. put mgmt.o in your home directory

ii. make a 2-line script, say adsl, there thus:

 modem_run -m -f mgmt.o
 pppd call adsl

iii. make it executable (chmod a+x adsl) then run it (./adsl).

After about 20 seconds the beans will be in a row and the connection will be live.

As you can guess from the way this was written I've never bothered with the
Control Centre stuff; this method is much more direct.

(If the username, password etc. haven't been entered the best thing to do is
to run drakconnect as root, which will run a wizard similar to that during
installation which will - eventually - prompt for them. Then go back to 'put
mgmt.o ...' and continue from there).

 Alastair

I tried doing what you suggest, but upon running the 'adsl' file I get a
message saying that it couldn't find my adsl modem, and to try to see if
it is shown under '/proc/something or other/devices' (can't recall the
exact path) and that location doesn't exist for me to check under.

The speedtouch was recognised under mdk8.2 so I am wondering why it
isn't recognised in 9.0 (if indeed that is what the problem is..).

advice always welcome :)

 [root@localhost thebrix]# unknown: Alcatel|USB ADSL Modem (Speed Touch) []
 (vendor:06b9 device:4061)

anywhere in the output? (Paste the output here so that everyone can crawl
 over it!)

I did not see such a line, and am unable to copy files across to an ntfs
partition.. and the only floppy I have is the boot floppy for safety..
but I checked the output over very carefully, and that lines doesn't
show. And I think I have an idea why.

ii. run harddrake2 as root; this will re-detect all the hardware (and not
show the ST in the popup window - this is a known bug :)

I ran harddrake2 and the speedtouch didn't show up in it.

I also ran usbview - on a hunch, and it said that it oculdn't find
/proc/bus/usb/devices and suggested I make sure I had usb support
compiled into my kernel.

I'm using the default mdk9.0 kernel, so it's probably just that usb
modules or something haven't been loaded.
Not sure how to do this.
Once I can get the speedtouch actually recognised, I'll try the ideas to
get it working.. as to how to get it recognised... seems I need help
still :)

iii. if i turns up nothing, or the ./adsl script, run as root, still doesn't
work after ii, what is the ST connected to? A hub? If so, move things around
so that it's connected to a main motherboard port then run harddrake2 then
the ./adsl script as root and see what happens.

 Alastair

thanks for the help Alastair :)

goto your application data folder.. not sure where that is on win98..
but you should be able to find Mozilla/Profiles/Default folders
somewhere.. and the files inside eg: search.rdf

Anyway.. once you find that folder, go into the Mail folder, then Local
folders.. where you find lots of *.msf files, aswell as files matching
the * with no extension.
Take a copy of all these files, and you can drop them into a new profile
on windows after reinstallation.. they even can be taken to another OS .
I recently copied some from inux to windows with no problems at all.

umm.. maybe you don't understand what you're asking. or maybe I don't
understand.

cgi in the way you refer to it is a system by which programs can be
'run' from one webpage to another to modify/provide content.

cgi isn't actually a webpage creating piece of software - unless there
is one named this I am not aware of.

if you are looking for a program like frontpage/dreamweaver etc .. then
you want to look at mozilla/netscape composer, or quanta, or bluefish.

I suggest to start with mozilla/netscape composer

You don't say which distro your on, but if it's LM8.2 take their
xine version off and download an rpm package from Redhat, it has
DeCss in the title, eg. xine-0.4.3-fr1.decss.rpm and install it
straight as it comes, mine works just fine.
John

I did take off the default installed version of LM8.2 xine. And
installed all of the above.
I uninstalled all.. installed the xine you indicated.. and got this
when trying to run it:

Isn't there a way I can use the latest 0.9.10 rpm's I have got..
and just enable proper decryption of dvd's using libcss?
- Azrael

Well I wish there was. I'm guessing but it would seem that your
choice of install seems to fail to enable decss encription. As I'm
unfamiliar with your choice it is difficult to say what may be the
reason. I can only say that when you first tried to install the main
xine rpm , it failed because of dependenties, it usually does, but it
is a question as to whether you have the right dependencies and
whether indeed it can work with decss encription file at all.
I had the same problems, and that is why I chose the abovementioned
Redhat package as it included as part of it's own install the correct
decss encription file.I was built in . Mine seem to work flawlessly.
So I guess from the above message that there is still a piece of
libpng left installed that is in conflict with this package. I know
that when I went down the same path as you I had all sorts of
versions to try out before I hit on one that worked. It is often
difficult to tellwhether in fact everything is cleared out on
uninstall. I don't suppose you have been installing tar ball version
by any chance. they don't remove easily unless you installed it with
checkinstall programme command.

I can see that you have libdvdcss2 which suggests an encription
package, but is it the right one.
It looks as though xine0-0.9.10-1 is your main xine package, does the
installer mention which decss package it is dependent upon. You see
this version may or may not work with decss encription packages.I
don't know. These are the sort of question you will have to ask
youself and seek to answer. The abovemention list of your looks
impressive but unless they are the right combination of packages it
will not work.
John

Well at least something is impressive this end :)

It's really annoying.. just about a year ago I had xine working with
encrypted dvd's - and now I seem to have taken steps backwards. It's
enough to make you turn to god!

well... not quite.

thanks for your help !!! :)

Now if they would just get the blasted spelling checker (spell checker seems

You can download it from one of the mirrors:

http://www.mozilla.org/mirrors.html
or from one of the download links at http://www.mozilla.org/
but some of the mirrors haven't updated yet. If they have, they don't seem to
be overwhelmed yet.

For 8.2 users: I don't know if this will help you or not but it's the way I
did it and it all Just works!

Download the tar.gz file to an empty directory. I use a src directory I
made in my home directory for all downloads, and I keep it empty between
installs.
Extract it using whatever method you prefer (right click, extract to
using archiver in my case) to the same directory and allow it to build the
mozilla-installer directory to extract to.
Open a terminal, change to super user (type su then type the root password
when prompted) then cd to the mozilla-installer directory that you just
made.
Type ./mozilla-installer leaving out the quotes when you are in the proper
directory. You'll have to do some accepting and choosing; I chose custom
install and left off the talkback link (feedback agent or whatever they
called it). I also changed the install directory to /usr/lib and called it
mozilla1 (temporarily, you'll see why in a minute) and allowed it to build
mozilla1 directory and install there.
After installation I closed the browser window that it opens, closed the
terminal, used (we're doing a GUI install here) FileManager Super User Mode
went to /usr/lib and renamed the existing mozilla directory to 'mozillaold'.
I then renamed mozilla1 to mozilla.
Open the old mozilla directory, copy your plug-ins except the default plug-in
and paste them into the new mozilla directory.
Close the file manager and start mozilla from your normal link or the
altF2mozilla method and you should be ready to rock. If it does happen to
break just revert to the old Mozilla by punting the new mozilla directory and
renaming the mozillold back to mozilla. I don't think it will though.

If you're wondering why I've said so many obvious things here; it's because a
friend of mine has just started using Mandrake 8.2, and I want her to get
used to at least lurking on the list so she'll be comfortable enough to ask
questions. She asked me how to do this, and I figured it may help someone
else too.

Sorry to make it so over-simplified!

[newbie] Printing

I installed an epson stylus color 680 usb printer on mandrake 8.2 using
CUPS and all seemed to go well. Auto recognised, etc etc.

Now a normal user tries to print from galeon.. it sends it to the right
printer.. but appears to only ever print out half the pages (first
half). Also.. it doesn't seem to always print straight away.. sometimes
when not printing at all I run printerdrake as root just to try and give
cups a kick up the backside to get working.. and that seems to do the
trick...
CUPS is initialised at boot .. so it is / or should be running anyway...
does anyone recognise the symptoms.. can anyone advise me of any solutions?

/dev/hdb6 2.0G 868M 1.1G 44% /home

which seems fine... but nearly every day '/' gets up to 100% .. and can
be brought down to 88% by deleting /var/log/syslog .. meaning this log
file gets to about 1.5G in size.
What can I do to prevent this? tips? I don't really like the idea of

Perhaps we need some sort of directory of such help. There must be

if we did have a directory of such things it might look like this
   http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Operating_Systems/Linux/User_Groups/ and
i might be the editor there. ;)

FWIW: The British magazine, LinuxFormat, has a list of UK LUG's in each
issue. The March issue shows 69 LUG's. It's also available online at
www.linuxformat.co.uk/links.php; another listing is at www.lug.org.uk. The
West Yorkshire LUG is at www.wylug.org.uk; there are other LUG's in
Huddersfield, Manchester and Blackburn. Happy hunting.

LinuxFormat is also a nice mag in its own right. I bought a copy the
last time I visited my motherland, and what did I find sellotaped to it
 but Mandrake 8.2!

 Sir Robin

Totally off topic now.. but my Mozilla project Hermes gets _two_
pictures in this months Linux Format!! I'm so proud!!!
