[newbie] Konqueror won't start
I am using KDE with Mandrake Linux 10.1 and I have a similar configuration on 2 separate machines. On one of the machines every thing works fine however on the second machine Konq wont start. If I enter the command kfmclient openProfile filemanagement I get the error message DCOPReply: cast to 'QCString' error Doe's anyone here know what is causing this problem and how to troubleshoot or repair it? [newbie] Boot record
On a ML installation when it gets to the part about where to put the boot record the first sector is one of the options. How would this affect how the machine boots? [newbie] Recovering lost data ?
I have installed ML in a machine that allready had XP installed on it. The XP installation had some problems to say the least. It was 95% unusable. I was hoping to install ML and use it to retrieve data from windows. I was able to defragment XP and did manual partitioning When I installed ML. The problem is that while doing the partitioning ML saw the windows partition as Gray instead of the usual blue and did not detect the windows installation. I went ahead and shrunk the windoze partition and gave it a mount point of /mnt/windows. I did not format the windows partition. I can no longer boot into windows and can not see any data on the windoze partition while using ML. Is there any way to retrieve the data that I think is probably still on the windows partition ? Does anyone here know how to modify the user agent ID in any of the popular browsers, Mozilla, Opera, Firefox or Konqueror to make things appear that I am using a Windoze machine running IE . I know that in most Linux browsere there is a quick easy way to change it in preferances but that seems to still leave some tell tale evidance at the end of the user agent string. Doesn't that do what you need? Also I'm pretty sure you can customise konqueror's user agent strings. I'm just not sure where that data is kept. derek I found konqueror's user agent strings. [newbie] ISP question Century Tell
Is any one else on the newbie list using Centurytel as a ISP with dsl service? If so are you having problems with DSL and ML 10.1? After ongoing problems for 2 weeks I am trying to track down if it is a local or a wide spread problem. Everything works fine with older ML distros and windoze but there are serious problems when using centurytel with ML 10.0 Due ti the fact I am unable to track down any intelligent life forms at Century Tel I am trying to figure out if this is a local or a wide spread problem in order to figure out who to ream at Centuryhell Any other century customers here have any input on this? If you're running 2.4.x it is called /etc/modules.conf. I just tried that and that made matters worse. I assumed 10.0 or later which uses the 2.6 kernel and uses /etc/modprobe.conf to configure the kernel modules. If you are using a 2.4 kernel, then the file is /etc/modules.conf derek OK I have my file:/etc directory open in konqueror. Under view I have show hidden files checked. all the directories are listed in alphabetical order In the M,s I have mail, makedev.d, menu, menu-methods, midi and mplayer but no modprobe or modules. [newbie] ML and slow DSL
This may be on the boarder line of off topic. For about the last week about half of the web sites that I go to work normally and the other half have about a half minute delay before a page starts to load. The slow ones are always slow and the fast ones are always fast. Up until a week ago EVERYTHING was really fast. I am on a high speed DSL connection. Here is where it all gets strange. Everything is still fast when using windoze. And strainger yet it is not just me the same thing is happening to at least 10 other Mandrake users in my area. All of us are using ML 10.0, ML 10.0.2 or ML 10.1 amd all of us still have normal fast service when using windoze. I don't know if other linux distros are affected. Is anyone else here having similar problems with Century Tel? Anyone here have any idea what may be going on or the cause of this problem? [newbie] Everything Allready Installed ?
In ML 10.0.2 and in 10.0 I sometimes get the message everything allready installed when attempting to install a new RPM. The last time this happened I was trying to install j2re. there was on java at all installed on this machine. Anyone here know how to solve this ? If you are using Mandrake linux and have K3B installed when you click on a ISO file it should automaticaly open in K3B if that does not work right click the file and ckick ofen with and select K3B. K3B should automaticaly detect it as a ISO file and make the correct adjustments to the process. Make sure that you manually adjust the CD burning speed to 1/2 the burning speed of your CD burner or 8X witch ever is less. SLOWER IS BETTER for burning ISO's. K3B also has a menu that you can scroll down after youn select a ISO file and K3B opens. If you scroll down the menu you will find that K3B has run MD5sums. Check to see that the output from that matches with the MD5sums figure that was downloaded with the ISO images. Needless to say if you used windoze to download things will be a bit different but 1 of the windoze CD burning utilities should handle it 1 way or another. [newbie] What happened to the boot loader options
In ML 9.x and before there used to be several options for how and where t6o install the bootloader. First sector of the hard drive, to a floppy etc. I just found that on 10.0.2 those options seem to br gone and I need them very badly for a problem installation that I am working on. [newbie] Dual boot problems
I have been fighting with a dual boot installation for days. I give up!!! It's time to ask you folks. I just did a low level format of the Hard drive and then a fresh install of win XP. Did a defrag, shut down right away and did a install of ML . I shrunk the windows partision 50% and did the rest of the installation. All went well. when I rebooted ML it worked great, as always. when I try to boot to XP all get is a black screen with a flashing curser. Anyone have any idea of what went wrong? Or how to fix it. Did the system reformat while reinstalling XP this should be done because you have a defective file in the windows part. Yep I did the windows format ruteine. Not the quick format but the full format. I have had this problem several times before on this machine and the only way that I have been able to get winsux back up and running is to do a full low level format using the zero fill tool from seagate and then doing the winsux reinstall. I have done dual boot installations with XP and ML before and NEVER had this kind of problem!!! Maybe I should mention that this is a brand new XP cd that I am using. It is supposed to have service pack 1 allready installed on it. This is starting to make me wonder if the folks at microsux have not found a way to take something bad and make it worse. The update dosen't need rescue mode but is probabley dosen't hurt to use it. I would just take defaults untill I had the option to select update/install and then select update. Yep I tried that. After that did not work I tried the rescue mode. By the end of the night the XP disk may become a target for rifle practice at 200 yards. Thanks Marc That would be more fun. The only suggestion I would have is to do a low level format and partition with the mdk CD1 using expert mode and define all partitions making Wind$usks the 1st partition. Then install windows XP and make sure it works. Then install mdk and if windows quits working have fun at the range. Been there, done that, yesterday. Here is the latest game plan. I am going to use a floppy for the master boot record. If that works I may try it putting the MBR on the root partison or perhaps creating a seperate partison for the MBR. I cant remember what all the options for the MBR are at the end of the ML install. Hell I never needed to . The defalt setting always worked UNTIL NOW. My best guess at this point is that maybe XP does not like sharing the first sector of the Hard disk with anything else, juest a guess. Thanks for your suggestions. I found that if I did not move the mouse at all from the time bootup started until the login screen was fully displayed the problem would not appear at all if I did move the mouse to soon the problem would be intermittant. [newbie] Ya don't know ehat you got til its gone
I had ML 9.0 running dual boot with XP on a Mach speed mobo P4 2.5 ghz cpu and a 90 GB IBM hitachi HDD. All was well and good. I just went to wipe out the whole ML installation installation and replace it with ML 10.0.2 and it hangs on formatting HDE7. I tried a ML 10.0 CD and it uung at the same point again I next tried the same thing with ML 9.0 and all went well. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be. I just tried to use a USB external drive in ML 10.0 My hopes were that ML would detect it and add a icon to my desktop like my card reader did. I was wrong, it was not that simple. Anyone have any ideas about how to get a External HDD workinh in ML 10.0? [newbie] fluxbox under MDK 10 CE -- Edit Menus
Can anyone reccomend a menu editor for fluxbox menus ? I have tried doing it by hand, but then that completly screws up the menus. Should I rather edit the /home/user/.fluxbox menu file or the /usr/share/fluxbox menu file ? And is it better to rather do it by hand, or to rather find a tool, hence the reason I am asking if anyone can reccomend something for me ? [newbie] OT: Hardware Issues
Morning / Afternoon and evening everyone. I just wanted to ask, my play machine at home, at the moment runs as a dual booting system, with both windows XP Pro and MDK 10.0 Community, now it was running fine up untill last night, I bought a processor and GFX card for the machine, now when I put both in the machine, it wont send a signal to the screen, however if I leave the new gfx card in the machine, and simply put the old processor back into the machine, it works, although now I have kernel panics in linux, and my windows xp has lovely Blue Screens of death ? The only thing I can think of is that the machine has now got corrupted system files ? Maybe when I put the new proc in ? The machine as I said is only a play machine and therefore has a celeron processor in it, I put a new Celeron D proc in, but as I noticed this wont work, but now if I put my old Celeron standard 1.7Ghz chip back into the pc, it starts the screen fine, and sends a signal and everything to the screen ? The OS is not a problem as I have bought a new hdd for the machine and well it was going to be replaced anyway so its not the biggest problem, the problem I am now worried about is that I have in some way stuffed up my socked on my MOBO by putting in a Celeron D chip as apposed to putting a normal Celeron chip in ? Is this possible? They are both socket 478 chips, nothing wrong there, I just dont think the D chip is compatible with my mobo ? Just out of curiosity has anyone gotten a connection working between a mdk10ce and freenet6.net ? I am just looking at it and have done it many times in the past with debian and unix based systems like OpenBSD and the likes, just out of bordem I am thinking of getting a IPv6 address for my mdk laptop at work :p Anyone done this ? So as long as you put up with high, or even higher resolution the printout is reasonably good , except that kde's printer control gui doesn't seem to work well with the actual printer setting, that is the hue, saturation, etc etc. It never has, but I'm sure that is a kde problem not cups. I guess it needs a Cl approach to reset the controls to hone down the setting to perfection.Haven't got down to figuring that out. Wife ran me off 20 years ago This is a new motherboard IDE 0 seems to be the problem new cables as soon as Fry's opens Lanman I had that same problem with a ECS, Elite Group MOBO that I am using now. I Tried switching cables but that did not help a bit. After resetting the BIOS several times and switching cables several times I finnially found that IDE 0 would not detect a HDD but would detect a CD or DVD just fine. IDE 1 was able to detect any drive that I put on it. Solution I just ended up using IDE 1 for the HDD and everything worked fine. About 6 months ago I had to replace the CD burner and while I( had the box open I thought that I would get to the bottom of the problem once in for all. Again after replaceing cables , changing jumpers on the HDD changing drive positions from the end of the cable to the center of the cable and anything else that I could think of I still had the same results IDE 0 WILL NOT detect a HDD but detects any CD or DVD just fine. I even tried switching brands of hard drives. I am still running the machine with the HDD on IDE 1 instead of IDE0 and all is still working fine. I can't understand how this is possible but never the less that is what is happening. This may or may not apply to the MOBO that you are using but it is worth a try. I would prefer in that case to get a source rpm and recompile it for my specific or the specific computer. It depends on what windows you have installed, if its a windows that uses a fat32 file system then you are fine, however if you are using a windows that uses ntfs such as XP or 2000 etc, you wont really be able to do what you want, as Linux only has read support for ntfs, while there is write support(in Debian, not sure about others), it is listed as *testing* and is not reccomended ! While I am not completly sure as to how it is done, I know for a fact that you can share printers via both samba and ldap ? Well maybe not ldap, but I KNOW samba works, try searching google.com for printer sharing under Mandrake, using samba to share. I know this is a bad solution to your problem, but at the end its the only way I could get around the exact same issue you are having, I basically uninstalled apache + php using mdk's package manager, I then downloaded apache 1.3.31 and php 5.0.0RC2, downloaded, compiled from source and well yes it worked, I then had to simply create a symlink lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root26 May 25 12:09 apache- /conf/apache/bin/apachectl And away I went, it all works perfectly, and well since then I have not had a single issue! So ya, this was all done on my MDK 10.0 CE machine, which is a laptop, and well it all worked perfectly. [newbie] SiS 7012 onboard sound with MDK10ce and a Laptop
Does anyone have any sudgestions as to how I should get my sound card working ? One thing I noticed is that when I upgraded from 9.2 to 10.0 it worked(didnt work in 9.2) but then I had or was forced to do a fresh install, and well I lost the config. Well from a commercial point of view. 1. www.sophos.com has a Linux anti virus client, its easy enough to install as long as you have glibc installed, well an up to date version that is. The linux .tar.gz file(s) are all on the cd's and I can reccomend it, as I use it personally at work, and it works like a dream. 2. www.drweb.ru is a Linux based virus scanner, I have not used it yet so I cannot vouch for its reliability, however it is mentioned during the MDK 10 CE install process and therefore I am led to believe that it cannot be all that bad? I am planning to set it up and run some tests with it. But in all honesty if you have access to a legal copy of sophos, then I would reccomend it over anything else. We have never had a single issue with it to this day, and we have been using it for quite some time now ! [newbie] SAMBA and NetBIOS names
Hi I used to have Mandrake 9.2 machines on the (windows) network and it was fine to ping the windows machines by their netbios names, something that I came to enjoy! I do not know how the network is set up. I assume DNS is used to keep track of machines' names... The only thing I know is that Linux was able to use their names in ping, ssh and others (like the cups wizard!). I moved to Mandrake10Official, and I came to realize that the name resolution is not working anymore. I dont know what has been changed, and after looking closely to smb.conf, resolv.conf, nsswitch.conf, winbind and trying to enable the machine as domain master, wins server, etc.. nothing seem to solve my problem. What I can do: use nmblookup machine name resolves the IP correctly What I cannot do: ssh machine_name, ping machine, etc... does not work anymore. [newbie] OpenLDAP slapd.conf file missing in MDK10CE ?
HEy Well basically I have been toying with OpenLDAP on a rh7.3 machine, everything was fine, now what I am hoping or actually what i HAVE todo, is setup a OpenLDAP machine which auths users for both mail and a whole range of services. Basically what I DONT understand, is that in MDK10CE there is no slapd.conf file? Should I configure it myself(I.E Create it from scratch?) Or should I re-install OpenLDAP... ? Its the default Install that comes with MDK at the first install ! Please if anyone could shed some light on my situation ? You want to install both MDK and Fedora on 1 6 Gig harddrive? I don't know how others feel, but I personally feel that you are pushing the limits here in terms of space :\ Last time I tried fedora on a development machine, it took up a decent amount of space, and well I just don't think I would have been able to survive with a 6GB hdd ! [newbie] urpmi ?
Morning I was just reading up and trying to get urpmi to work properly.. But I cant seem to, I am very familiar with apt-get but I use Debian purely in a server enviroment, and I am now trying to get urpmi to work for my laptop I could obviously set up apt-get on a mdk box(I imagine so since it is possible under redhat), however, I would prefer to stay with the tools mdk comes with. Now what I would like to know. 1. How do I tell urpmi to go around my proxy? And if I cant do this how would I get urpmi to authenticate ? I could always do as follows export http_proxy=http://user:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:port/ but that does not seem to allow urpmi to authenticate :\ 2. A list of mirrors, I found a mirror file generator on the net once, and I told it what I wanted, and well as s expected, it generated the mirrors, I pasted them into my /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg file, but then it wont allow me to download the updates, I imagine its something todo with my proxy server here at work ? If anyone can help me here, I would really appretiate it ! Also in 10.0 the 2.6 kernel no longer needs to use ide-scsi in
order to write CD-RW so in your /etc/lilo -v file remove any
reference to ide-scsi in the append line and then run lilo -v
to write the boot sector.

Removing references in modprobe.conf and modprobe.preload for
ide-scsi is also neccessary. Consider this advice temporary as
Mandrake (current 10.1 devel) is goin back to ide-scsi for IDE CD
devices. Early 10.1 (2.6.5 or .6 kernel) is already back to it.
Contrary to the questionable Mandrake move, this 'last minute'
change to magicdev for 10.0, I'd suggest doin a urpme on it an
then runnin 'supermount -i enable' 'mount -a' Supermount is
mature, magicdev is alpha, and has known problems. I find
supermount-ng as implemented in current 2.6.x kernels to be
flawless.
Another mistaken Mandrake move, but can easily be turned off or
removed is tmdns.
John, check that 'll /dev/hd*' return drives numbers suitable
for your CD drives(s). Make sure fstab also reflects the correct
device, ie, hd*, not scd*. Check /etc/ modprobe* files to be
certain they don't call ide-scsi or scsi host adaptor. I'm
sort'a thinkin your fstab (Mandrake bug) doesn't accurately
reflect the device connotations. If my advice doesn't work for
you post the results of
- 'll /dev/hd*' and also /dev/scd*
- Your /etc/fstab file.
- 'cdrecord -scanbus' and 'cdrecord dev=ATA -scanbus'
- Your modprobe* files
Come to think of it, post your kernel version ('uname -r') and
the above to the list before makin any changes.

The cdrecord -scanbus produced a long file. Included was:

I also noticed when checking mcc hardware that the device file had
been changed from /dev/hdc to /dev/ide/host0/bus1/target/lun0/cd. This
file change also happened in 9.2 and I couldn't mount the cd. I ended
up reinstalling 9.2. On md 10 it may have happened when I hit the run
config tool. Hope this info. helps. I am also having problems with
internet connection but will tackle that after this. Thanks for the
