Re: [newbie] uh oh, having problems, need help
First how big is the drive you are trying to use, and how much space have yo set aside for mandrake? have you tried to reinstall mandrake after cleaning up your windows partition? if so did you scandisk it and defrag it first? I have cleaned up a drive and given the space to a new linux install , but you have to do those steps first. also how did you make the partitions ( yes plural ) for linux? with a windows tool like partition magic, of throught the linux diskdrake tool as you installed? the more details the better. Re: [newbie] uh oh, having problems, need help
5 gig is a little light, it may not give you everything you want. also is the 5 gig for linux set up as only a / partiution? or is /home seperate? my setup at work is i have a 4 gig windows hard drive and a 10 gig Mandrake drive. the mandrake drive is setup as follows : hdb1 is / hdb5 is /home hdb7 is /tmp It sounds like you should do a reinstall and make at least a 4 gig partition for / and a 1 or more for /home ( though i'd give at least 3 gig if possible ). reinstall using the diskdrake tool should work. also you didn't answer if you scandisked ans defragmented your window partition. Did You? also choose to select individual packages and read the descriptions for most of them and choose if you really need it or not. don't pick to install everything and all the window managers and games and such be picky with your choices as you don't really have enough space to go nuts yet. when you learn how nice mandrake is you will naturally decrease the windows partition to a minimum. anything else?? ;-) mike [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: ok, my current hard drive is a 20GB hard drive. it was partitioned for me (by my friend who built my computer) into a 5gb and 15gb partition. when i first installed mandrake, it only gave me slightly over 1gb of free space on my 15GB partitoin to install with. after seeing mandrake was working, i exited back to windows, deleted some things off the 15gb partition, then went to re-install linux to give it more space to run (was going to give it a good 4-5GB of space), and that's when the problems started. i really did a number on this one. i gave it more space when it came to the partitioning part, and told it to leave 10GB on the windows partition. now i can't use the linux option when i get to the boot choices screen, only linux-nonfb works. so where do i go from here to fix all this and give mandrake a dedicated 5GB to operate out of? thanks. [newbie] how to NOT save a kde session
Hi all, In past versions of Mdk , when logging out of kde you had the choice of saving the session or not. in 9.0 running kde 3.1 the choice is gone and it just automatically saves the session. this is a problem in 9.0 for me because I use firestarter. because in 9.0 it saves the fact I WAS running firestarter ( and does this even if I turn it off before logging out ) and tries to start it up again when I log back in as a user. because firestarter requires root access I get four error messages that I can't stop , and still have to su in console and become root then start firestarter. ( I know in 9.1 firestarter works properly and what I do in 9.0 isn't needed ) but I want to stay in 9.0 until a few things catch up to 9.1. - then I will change and this email will be unnecessary. ;-) What I want to do is turn off the auto save session feature under 9.0 running kde 3.1. Yes I know I can update to 9.1 , ( the problem is resolved as far as I can tell in 9.1 ) but don't want to just yet, and yes I know and have read the manual, I have even tried to edit some files, but I'm not finding the right file to edit in Mdk 9.0 / kde 3.1 . does anyone know how to do this? or if it's possible? -- Mike McNeese Springdale, Arkansas USA == Dual booting 98lite;MDK 9.0 kernel 2.4.19-16 Kde 3.1 Registered Linux User #248955 acqua / Keramik Theme == If obstacles are what you see in your path... Alternatively right click on your desktop, select CreateNewLinktoApplication fillin all the details in the pop up, and than drag/drop that link into the autostart folder. Re: [newbie] error installing NVIDIA 1.0-4191 drivers
Hi. I installed the 4191 driver in 9.0 and they work fine but you have to do it properly or it will mess up your install. :-( you will have to remove and uninstall any NVIDIA drivers which you have tried. I had to reinstall to fix my first attempt. ;-{ But , It can be done ! so Take heart ! First you must have the right source rpm installed so you will need to correct this. you can find the right sources here : ftp://at.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake/9.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/ I use the kernel-headers-2.4.18-41 so you should be fine with that one. the kernel-doc doesn't matter I followed this tutorial which is very nice : http://www.icculus.org/~dolson/mdkxp/?c=ttrls/nvidiacli It directs you to rebuild the src rpms for your pc which is a good idea. it also tells you where you can get them ( but this is incorrect, get them from the Nvidia site itself , and make sure they are the src.rpms ) If I remember , you will find the rebuild rpms here :/usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586 follow the rest of the tutorial carefully and it will work fine. always remember to do alot of this from the command line in runlevel 3 If you need help write me back and I can tell you how to use mcedit to edit the files you need to edit if you don't know how to do that from the command line. mcedit is much easier to use than vi which he suggests using to edit the files. ( just let me know ) ;-) hope this helps . oh yeah, this is what I get when I use glxgears to test the speed of the card with the Nvidia drivers : 944 frames in 5.0 seconds = 188.800 FPS 1115 frames in 5.0 seconds = 223.000 FPS 1131 frames in 5.0 seconds = 226.200 FPS 1133 frames in 5.0 seconds = 226.600 FPS Not bad eh? Now before I get flamed let me explain. I run a small 500mhz Athlon with 64mg memory but for speed and effeiciency XP is by far the fastest. My Md9 is a minimal installation (although having most of the HD) but still pales in comparison to XP even when a large number of apps are working. With XP I boot and hey-presto I'm logging in with Md9 I can make a brew etc etc. (well not literally but you get the point) I beleive that as far as the end user is concerned speed is the most important factor. Not how much software is free or that linux is more stable and reliable. The average user wants speed. You click on an icon and up pops the application IMMEDIATELY!!! With XP even my little 500 acheives this performance but alas (and I mean that with a heavy heart) Md9 is a slow monolith beleiving that placing god knows how many apps into their installation cd's will convert new customers. What kind of Os do the boys run ? windows? Maybe they are not still connected on their end. Sometimes my wifes win 98 box will lose it's connection to the network and she forgets to re-logon. and sometimes even has to reboot to re-establish the connection. Now, whenever I drag 'n drop a picture or even ASCII text to the printer icon (I created it - pointing to kprinter) on their desktops, I get an error message like this: An error occured while retrieving the printer list: client-error-not-found I had changed nothing. Re: [newbie] Influence and help LM91 NOW
Anne, I triple boot, and to avoid problems I never install lilo on the second linux install. what I do is install the second OS without installing lilo or any boot loader. ( under an expert install ) then I copy 4 files from the /boot partition of the second to the first /boot partition I run two versions of 9.0 so here is what's in the /boot of the first one on hda5 boot.0300 initrd.img@ message-text config@ kernel.h@ System.map@ config-2.4.19-16amdk kernel.h-2.4.19-16amdk System.map-2.4.19-16mdk config-2.4.19-16mdk kernel.h-2.4.19-16mdk us.klt grub/ map vmlinuz@ initrd-2.4.19-16amdk.img message@vmlinuz-2.4.19-16amdk initrd-2.4.19-16mdk.img message-graphic vmlinuz-2.4.19-16mdk notice that all I had to do was rename each of the new files by adding an a before mdk. now in the /etc/lilo.conf of the first OS on hda I added the following for the OS on hdb image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.19-16amdk label=90 root=/dev/hdb5 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.19-16amdk.img append=quiet devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi vga=788 read-only then I simply did lilo at a root prompt and rebooted and there it was , useable and all . Re: [newbie] Failed install
Hi , First , it can be quite frustrating to go through an install as you did. two things come to mind to ask though, were the cd's given you copies of downloaded iso's? or original cd's ? copies can often be defective or at least less than perfect, and RH disks that are not perfect can also do much the same. also if the cd drive isn't perfect, or misreads data , any OS would give you problems either immediately, or in time. I've always liked that fact that Mandrake installs require good equiptment ( and I don't mean new, just properly working ) to continue, because it has helped me find problem equiptment quickly. Before you give up ( hopefully you haven't yet ) try another cd drive, and or new/origianl disks ( if they weren't ). Mike Guy Rouillier wrote: I've run Redhat up till now, and at a coworker's urging, decided to give Mandrake 9 a try. I have pretty old equipment at home, including a 2x CD-ROM, so the install took quite awhile (I recently purchased a higher-speed rewriteable off eBay - hasn't arrived yet.) Turns out this old CD-ROM apparently had trouble reading the CD-Rs my coworker supplied. At a couple points on disks 2 and 3, I got a popup dialog telling me it was unable to read a package, continue? I figured no big deal, I can live without those packages - the whole first CD went without error, so I thought all the system files would be okay. Well, after install took 2 hrs to go through all 3 CDs, it then popped up a message saying Errors detected in one or more packages (approximate wording - I didn't write it down). It then jumped back to the start of the installation process!!! Didn't configure root or additional user, etc, so the 2-hr process it just went through was useless. I then went back through install and told it to ignore disks 2 and 3, and got a working system. But I'd like to suggest to Mandrake if they lurk here to either (1) abort the install as soon as they know it is unrecoverable, or (2) finish configuration if errors are detected only in non-essential packages. This was a very frustrating intro to Mandrake. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I IMHO would recommend you use 8.0 if you can get it to work. I too think it is a great version, an until just today I have stuck with it because I could not get everything working in 8.2 or 9.0 so I would have to go back to 8.0. I finally got my printer ( hp 820cse ) working in 9.0 so now I'll stick with it for now. But with that amount of Memory I'd try 8.0 first. I have run it on a 486 with 48 mg or ram. Re: [newbie] before I quit
Hi , have you tried to run the cd drives in other boxes to insure they work? also have you changed the IDE cable first? I ask because I went through a similar situation. it turned out to be the slave connection on a UDMA cable. the master was fine but the slave was bad though it was a new cable. after several hours of fighting it, I changed the cable and I put in a cd drive I thought was dead, but now works fine. it was the cable. this was a hard one to figure out because the drives would show up in the bios, but would not work in the os. also I have had other cd drives that were not perfect that Linux ( RH or MDK whatever ) would not play with because they were not perfect. ( better than a tutorial , yes? ) it's really very easy, if you have enough space, and the hardware doesn't cause problems. so tell me ( if you choose to do it that way ) or us ( the list ) the specs and we can start there. later Greg wrote: Hi Every one My son is interested in LinuxHe bought his own computer and I loaded win 98 for so he can play his games He started playing games on my MDK 9.0 box and now he wants 9.0 also I can not find any good info on how to load 9.0 on to he box with win 98 Can any one give me any help I have been with MDK since 7.0 but never a dual boot machine HELPThanks Greg ° Currently triple booting 98lite; MDK 8.0 kernel 2.4.3-20; MDK 9.0 kernel 2.4.19-16 Registered Linux User #248955 ° If obstacles are what you see in your path... Re: [newbie] Re: LM 8.2 Configuration
wrote: Hi! I got Windows XP Pro/Mandrake 8.2 installed on a workstation, the windows died meaning it goes doom by showing illegal operations. I decided to re-install Windows again. Is there any faster way of restoring back the LM 8.2 boot-up screen without re-installing the whole software. If you mean you want to have lilo again after an windows re-install, then it is very simple. that is if you made a boot disk when you installed mandrake 8.2. If you did , then all you have to do is use it to startup mandrake. ( it should boot into your mandrake install with or without win/whatever installed ) once in Mandrake open a terminal type su and enter password then simply type lilo. now it will give you the boot list again when you start the box. Thanks No it comes with 2.4.18 which finally offers a good virtual memory manager unlike its predecessors. It installs by default though you can call in kernel22 in individual package installabtion. To see which kernel you are running, open a terminal window and uame -a You mean uname -a Mike Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] 8.2 on ATI 8500DV?
Nelson Bartley wrote: Hi Guys, I'm wondering if anyone has installed 8.2 on a computer using the 8500DV video card? I just tried installing a few minutes ago and it passed the inspecting serial devices stage, went to go graphical, then just a black screen. I know my monitor can do the resolution it's asking for, so I'm wondering if anyone else has managed to install w/ this video card. Sometimes, you have to run the install of the xfree86 ( Xconfiguration part ) twice. on two card I have I had to do that for both. also try the 3x version not the 4x first do it twice . additionally , don't test the resolution configuration. skip that part. then see what happens.
