[Nighthawk Lovers] Tires and Wear
I had a set of Avon AM-26 Roadriders on my 92 NH750. At about 14K miles, I developed a 45-55 MPH vibration. First thought was to replace the front wheel bearings but that did no good. The tech suggested the tires might be worn but they still showed lots of tread. I replaced them anyway with Bridgestone BT-45s. Problem solved. Lesson learned: Even if tires still show tread, they may be worn out internally. I don't know if this is an issue limited to Avons, but I thought I'd let you guys know. Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Any 750 owners using a disc lock?
I'm not really concerned with deterring a determined thief, that's what insurance is for, but I want to deter the opportunists from even messing with the bike. An easily spotted disc lock should do the trick, with the added bonus of being hard for me to forget too. :D I seem to recall a statistic that most thefts are crimes of opportunity, not planning and forethought. Anyone know how big the holes in the front disc are? Need to measure them for pin diameter. I can get to it this afternoon, but if someone else is already using a lock, less work for me. :D -Kurt On Mon, May 7, 2012 at 11:25 PM, Pastor Ron pastor...@cox.net wrote: I was told if they want it, they just put dollies under the wheels. [Nighthawk Lovers] Rear brake pedal not returning...
I had to replace the valve stems on both the front and rear tires recently and after reassembling the bike, everything seemed to be in order. I just happened to check the back brake and after applying pressure, the brake pedal would not return to the up position (other than doing it manually). I use the back brake without the front often, so I am confident it was working 100% before we removed the tire. My buddy seems to think that removing and lubricating the pedal shaft will fix the problem, but I'm skeptical as this was working smoothly beforehand as I mentioned. Is there something we have forgotten to adjust? The rear brake adjustment was also left as-is (other than being removed from the brake hub in order to remove the wheel) and the spring(s) are both functional. Only other modification was that the tension clamp(?) for the brake pedal adjustment on the hub required a new bolt because the old one was not threading properly. I run supermoto, on the track I'm 22-24 PSI on DOT tires (Contimotion / Pirelli Sport Demon). They dont last very long but the difference in traction is just incredible. The front end used to chatter and hop when I was at 28 PSI. Look on the tire for its rated max PSI, and stick to a few PSI below that for normal street riding. [Nighthawk Lovers] CB250 Nighthawk 70 mile Daily Highway Commute -- Bad?
Hi All, I'm looking for some input from anyone with long term experience with the Nighthawk 250. I have a 2008 nighthawk that I bought with 3k miles from a dealer. Since August 2011, I have put 8k miles on it with my daily 50 mile commute, 20 miles of which is highway. So far this little bike has held up great and saved my a ton of money on gas versus my '97 Dodge Durango V8. However, I was just offered a better teaching job that will require 72 miles on the freeway. It will be a longer (but faster) commute for me with no lights, but I am worried that I am going to prematurely destroy my little 250 by running it @ 70mph for 72 miles a day. So my questions are these: 1. Can my Nighthawk hold up in the long term for this commute? 2. If not, any suggestions on a bigger bike with great fuel economy? I will have to go through a dealer if I need to get a new bike, because I don't have any cash on hand, so older used bikes are probably not an option. I really want to hang on to this little bike as it has treated my well, but if I'm going to destroy it, I will just have to trade it in. [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: CB250 Nighthawk 70 mile Daily Highway Commute -- Bad?
The bike is well engineered. (I'm a former Honda tech.)..however heat build up can be a problem wide open for an extended time. Back off now and then, maybe find one rest stop along the way. Consider getting a bigger bike such as a 450 Rebel , 450 nighthawk, CM400, 600 shadow, etc. Many of these older bikes do not have a lot of miles and can be picked up for reasonable money. If it takes a while to find a bigger bike or trade up, be sure to keep an eye on miles and oil change. The oil change is the best insurance against engine wear and damage. Be sure to service your air cleaner. Keep your senses tuned to the power delivery while you are making your ride, if you sense a drop off or sluggishness, you need to pull over and let er cool down. [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Tires and wear
14K is pretty darned good for a bike like the 700 that engourages spirited riding. You must be easy on the first gear eh? Do you ride one bike a certain road and the other another? One to work and another on the twisties? remember most secondary roads have a crown to shed rain ( at least here in the staes) and that causes uneven wear on one side of the tireand as another member said tire pressure is all so important. No two brands are exactly alike compound tocompound, so I'd just chaulk it up to that. Yes I'm also sure tread pattern can be an element as well. On May 7, 8:59 pm, Dennis den...@samadhisoft.com wrote: I've got two CB700SC's; one's a '85 and the other's a '86 - both red/black. I got the '85 in 2007 and I immediately put a set of new Avons onto it and I got the '86 in 2009 and I immediately put a set of new Dunlops onto it. I bought both of these bikes with about 10,000 miles on them and they both have about 24,000 now. So, they've each gone approximately 14,000 since their tires were new. Today, when I ran the '86 with the Dunlops though the New Zealand Warrant of Fitness tests (we have to do this every six months here in new Zealand) I was amazed to find out that my front Dunlop has worn down sufficiently that he said he'd almost failed me and for sure I'd have to replace if before I came in again in six months. Originally, I thought my Avons were the softer tire (softer equals better grip through curves but they wear out sooner is the way I think it goes) so I'd expected that the Avons would be the ones I'd have to replace first. But, it seems like the reverse is happening here. I looked at the patterns on my tires (see the photos) and I can see the Dunlop has a line right down the center whereas the Avon has the lines in a wave pattern with breaks. Not sure if that means much. So, is 14,000 miles a reasonable mileage for needing to do a replacement? And, did I have it backwards about the Avons being the softer tire? And, what do folks think about Avons verse Dunlops in general? Or are you keen on some other tire brand that you think would be well suited for a 700SC? [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Rear brake pedal not returning...
The angle is important. There should be an alignment arrow on the lever. the shaft does not have splines where the gap in the lever slides on. It is possible to get it on wrong with some inattention and a spread out clamp, but I think you'd notice. Be sure the axle is adjusted square or exactly the same on both sides w/ the proper slack in the chain. I like to adjust the chain slack with a riders weight actually on the bike, but that's me. Then be sure the round pivot in the small lever the rod rides in is not cocked, check the rod on the lever end, be sure the spring is on right, take the lever off and clean up the pivot and inside the lever, when it dropped down when free, it may have picked up enough contaminant to gum up the works. I like to lube such pivots w/ moly or waterproof marine grease. And don't forget the problem could be in the backing plate where the brake cam goes thru the backing plate. I'd hope this was cleaned and lubed when shoes went in, but you knowtake a good look there. On May 8, 11:16 am, Bryan Gibson bgibso...@gmail.com wrote: Yes, that spring is there and it's fine. [Nighthawk Lovers] Birth of the Nighhawk S
Hi Paul, Just visited the new web site. Cudos. As a former District Manager for the Honda motorcycle division I'd like to add some little known info on the birth of the Nighthawk S. One of our east coast Area Managers was Mike Kehne. (Hope I spelled that right) Prior to his joining Honda he worked at a shop in Maryland I think it wasHe and fellow sales folk were adding the bits such as bikini fairing to std 750s and having good sales numbers with them. As luck would have it, Japanese engineers were traveling the area and visited the shop. They liked what they saw and consulted w/ Mike over the next few months to come up with a new bike. The Nighthawk S. So the S was Born in the USA!. Mike is no longer with us, but his inovation and vision helped create on of the all time greats. He too was an all time great. Hope I did justice to this Mike. Double G -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Nighthawk Motorcycle Lovers! group. Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: CB250 Nighthawk 70 mile Daily Highway Commute -- Bad?
Double G and all, At the risk of sounding like a 'know it all' - the 450 Nighthawk is no treat on the highway for extended periods - to maintain 70 MPH you have to run the bike at almost 5,000 RPM which dramatically reduces the fuel economy, not to mention adding in a considerable amount of highway buzz. I also found that the 450 didn't accelerate particularly well at those speeds - but mine doesn't have stock carbs, it has the carbs from a 400. The accelerator pump might be the difference there. IMHO - find a nice small 500-800 cc bike with at least four cylinders - they provide better performance on the top end. -Joey On Tue, May 8, 2012 at 1:16 PM, Double G gary_galle...@yahoo.com wrote: The bike is well engineered. The next step is to take the tank off or get my hands on a shop manual (I only have the owners manual) and try and identify the possibilities and work backwards from there...If anyone knows any other things that could be causing my bike to shut off when I put it into gear let me know. [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Rear brake pedal not returning...
We will take this into consideration when we go to work on it. The 85 Nighthawk 650 is not chain driven, so I don't have any chain to worry about adjusting. We didn't replace shoes as they were recently replaced by the previous owner. I will check the placement of the brake arm and recheck all of the springs again. Cyclepedia's tech support recommended adjusting the brake pedal and checking the brake pedal free play. That seems like more of a I have no idea type of answer (from Cyclepedia) to me but it's worth a shot. Thanks for your reply and suggestions! Graham, I think so. Mine is in fact cbr1000f, a.k.a Hurricane. it was made until 1996. I have seen several on CL in this area every once in a while, and some quite cheap, although I have not seen a RWB since I bought mine. [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Rear brake pedal not returning...
When you say Brake arm are you referriing to the strut type bar that simply keeps the backing plate from rotating? If you did not remove the arm that operates the internal cam that spreads the shoes, then none of that is the culprit. Look underneath and be sure there is no binding or conflict of the rod with a hose or other component. On May 8, 4:13 pm, Bryan Gibson bgibso...@gmail.com wrote: We will take this into consideration when we go to work on it. I like to lube such pivots w/ moly or waterproof marine grease. And don't forget the problem could be in the backing plate where the brake cam goes thru the backing plate. [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Tires and wear
Dennis, I had the exact same experience. In Hawaii we have a yearly safety check on all vehicles (Cars, Boats and Motorcycles), if you don't have a current one you cannot register your vehicle. I took mine in and was told that I have to replace both of my tires. I have about 18k on the front and 16k on the back. According to my mechanic I'm getting great wear on my tires. They're the stock that Honda recommends. Sean On May 8, 7:25 am, Double G gary_galle...@yahoo.com wrote: 14K is pretty darned good for a bike like the 700 that engourages spirited riding. [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: CB250 Nighthawk 70 mile Daily Highway Commute -- Bad?
I was just running this very topic through my head this morning. I have a 12 mile commute that only has about 3 miles of highway. However, I'm now having to commute for 30 miles each way and 20 of it is on the Highway - this will be off and on for the next couple of months. As I was riding in today we had our typical Hawaiian trade winds - the wind is very strong here. As I was going I was fighting the wind both ways on my 750 and wishing I had my ST1100 on Oahu with me. The bigger bike is more stable and will give you the power you need to be comfortable and safe. If you can find an ST or Concours you won't have to go to the gas station as often. To sound like a know it all trade up to a bigger bike. You'll be much happier and with that much highway time you'll be much more rested after the rides. Nothing against the NH250 - great bike for city a little amounts of high way. I think you'll be shocked at how much nicer a bigger bike will be to ride. Sean On May 8, 8:44 am, Joey Kelley sandp...@gmail.com wrote: Double G and all, At the risk of sounding like a 'know it all' - the 450 Nighthawk is no treat on the highway for extended periods - to maintain 70 MPH you have to run the bike at almost 5,000 RPM which dramatically reduces the fuel economy, not to mention adding in a considerable amount of highway buzz. Better fuel is better. Good luck. On May 8, 1:06 pm, BoonesDaddy brandonbogar...@gmail.com wrote: Hi All, I'm looking for some input from anyone with long term experience with the Nighthawk 250. [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Any 750 owners using a disc lock?
I have a post market rotor on my front disc brake and put a lock on it. It's pretty generic and cost me about $10 at a store closing sale in SF. I would recommend going by a shop with your bike, usually sales people will let you go make sure it fits your bike. Mine can fit in my fist and it's made by a company that does bicycle D locks...I can't recall the name off the top of my head. Just make sure that you get a bright cord that goes from your lock to your handle bars so you have a reminder that the lock is on the break. Trying to ride down the street with a front disc lock on your bike poses a few problems...lol -Jarreau On Monday, May 7, 2012 7:58:41 PM UTC-7, Kurt Nolte wrote: Just as the title says. [Nighthawk Lovers] Thanks for the help.
I found a pair of handlebars to fit my 84 Nighthwak 650 (thanks to the dimensions provided by some of you). I have been working on it for about a month now and took it out for my first ride on Sunday! It was great until the rain came in. Now that it is up and running (and safe on the road) it is now time to turn it over to my wife as she wants to start riding. Looks like the second bike I just got (A 2002 1800 VTX) will just have to suffice. RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] I FOUND IT!!
I always fear that a short will be a little spot on the underside of a wire that I can not find. That one seems a little more obvious. Great job! And what a relief. I got the brake fluid changed on the NH tonight. They feel solid. The hardest part was waiting for the pump to come and then getting it to seal tightly. It was easy enough. Tomorrow night the ST. which has three lines to bleed and if time permits a clutch. Also on the map I have two browsers and have not be able to add myself.
