[nlug] Recommendation to clean a hacked PC?

2024-06-25 Thread john Wallace

I have a friend who needs advice on where to take a hacked Windows 10 PC.

She's not technically savvy, and so telling her to save her files, wipe
her PC, and re-install isn't something she would do.

Is there a local Nashville company who could professionally clean up her
PC?  She is a doctor, and so the price would probably be less important
than getting it done right.

Thanks.

[nlug] Android 13 question

2024-03-20 Thread John F. Eldredge
I recently upgraded to a Moto G Stylus 2023 (4G version). It is running
Android 13.

Every 30 seconds or so, a light blue, translucent band appears, moves from
the bottom to the top of the screen, and a chime sounds. If the phone is
set to do-not-disturb mode, i get the color bar but no chime.

This chime sound is NOT what I have selected as my default notification
sound, and no notification appears. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to
fix this? It is very annoying.

[nlug] Capturing a phone call's true origin

2024-02-10 Thread John F. Eldredge
Does anyone know of a way for an Android phone to capture an incoming
call's true origin number, or is that information only available to the
phone company? In the last year, I have received about 1,000 calls (several
per day) where the caller hangs up as soon as I speak. At first, I assumed
it was a bot building up a list of answered numbers, but I am now starting
to suspect I am being deliberately harassed. I served for several years as
the newsletter editor for the Nashville Peace and Justice Center, a local
progressive organization, so any harassment could be politically motivated.

[nlug] Best Salesforce alternative?

2023-08-17 Thread john Wallace
What would be a good open source alternative to Salesforce for a small
company that uses Salesforce mostly to manage customer contacts and
customer support?  Bug tracking would be a plus.  A solution that runs
on Linux would be preferred but not necessarily required.

Thanks in advance.

Security through obscurity does not work :) This is merely a method to
reduce alert & log volume so one can concentrate on more important
matters. You will find that persistent pests will find the alternate
port and start probing but the automated skiddies will go on to
lower-hanging fruit.

fail2ban is available in EPEL for EL7:

yum --enablerepo=extras install epel-release
yum --enablerepo=epel install fail2ban-server fail2ban-sendmail fail2ban-systemd

Configure as necessary and then enable and start with:

systemctl enable fail2ban.service
systemctl start fail2ban.service

Move sshd to another port; it does nothing to heighten security but it
will reduce log / alert volume by more than a bit.

[nlug] Bad blocks in flash memory

2022-08-02 Thread John F. Eldredge
My Android phone has the input system periodically freeze for up to thirty seconds. If it does so while I am tapping text in, some of the keypresses are ignored (for example, I might type "right away" and have the text "ray" appear).  Sometimes, a dialog box saying "process 'System' isn't responding. Meanwhile, background processes such as showing a video keep running, unimpaired.I tried clearing all caches. No improvement. I tried doing a factory reset. This helped for about a week, then the slowdowns reappeared.I suspect some of the flash memory internal to the phone is going bad, causing multiple retries. I know the SD card isn't at fault, as I replaced the SD card, and that didn't solve the problem. Is there an Android equivalent to scanning a hard drive for bad blocks, and mapping them to be avoided? My phone is not rooted, and no one has reported a way to root it. It is a 2019 Moto G Stylus.

[nlug] Single printer shows up as two printers in Ubuntu

I have a single printer, an HP Laserjet MFP M29W. This is a black-and-white

printers, named HP_LaserJet_MFP_M28-M31 and HP_LaserJet_MFP_M29W_7F4E86_
but using the same printer driver built into the kernel, drvless.ppd. I can
print to either one. Removing either printer definition in settings results
in it reappearing a few seconds later. Does anyone know why this is
happening? Should I disable one of them?

2022-02-20 Thread John F. Eldredge
Speaking as a former system administrator, having backups is always a

Re: [nlug] Bluetooth incompatibility

2022-02-07 Thread John F. Eldredge
I finally got the audio to work by unpairing and repairing the phone. I am
still trying to get Mitsubishi to tell me where to find documentation on
the Bluetooth system. The 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage came with two different
Bluetooth interfaces. My car has the cheaper version, with only a pairing
button, an upward-pointing button, and a downward-pointing button. The more
expensive version has a touch screen interface. Naturally, the owner's
manual describes only the more expensive version.

It's been present in their Enterprise Agreements for quite some time and
is applicable to both the free and non-free tiers.

Current Enterprise Agreement for North America is at:

In this document the section in question is section 10.

[nlug] Job title

2021-10-26 Thread John F. Eldredge
I am rereading the science fiction novel "A Fire Upon the Deep", and
laughing again at one character's job title, "programmer archaeologist".
His job was to go through libraries of old code and find useful routines.
Since so much current-day programming involves updates to legacy code, it
does have an archaeological feel at times.

[nlug] ClamAV running extremely slowly

2021-07-24 Thread John F. Eldredge
I have a laptop that can be booted into either Ubuntu Linux or Windows 10.
It runs fast on Linux, but, when running Windows, it has continuous disk
activity, and moves at glacial speed. My Windows antivirus software doesn't
find anything, so I downloaded a Linux Live CD with ClamAV installed on it,
burned the image while booted into Ubuntu, rebooted using the Live CD, and
started it scanning. It has been scanning files for 38 hours now. It isn't
hung, as the file names it shows as it runs are changing. Is ClamAV known
for slowness?

Re: [nlug] Memory/resource leak in Android 10

2021-04-24 Thread John F. Eldredge
No references, but the fact that the need to reboot went down sharply once
I was using a stronger connection makes me suspect the bug is in the WiFi
code. Cycling airplane mode on and off sometimes cleared the problem, but
not always. My phone is a Motorola One Action, connecting to Verizon, and
running the latest Android firmware (the most recent security update was a
few days ago. If the bug is in the device driver, it might be
Motorola-specific. If the bug is in the kernel, it may be more widespread.

I am now connecting to a Comcast router. I don't know what hardware the
free WiFi is using, but it is one floor down in a high-rise, likely meaning
reinforced concrete floors.

[nlug] University of Minnesota banned from contributing to Linux kernel

2021-04-24 Thread John F. Eldredge
Two researchers at the University of Minnesota have admitted they
deliberately introduced security flaws into the Linux kernel, in order to
determine how effective the review process is. As a result, all code
changes originating from the university have been rolled back and are being
re-reviewed, and no one using a University of Minnesota email address will
be allowed to submit kernel changes. Apparently the flaws the researchers
introduced are now in use on production systems worldwide.

[nlug] Memory/resource leak in Android 10

2021-04-24 Thread John F. Eldredge
When I first moved into my apartment, I was relying on an open WiFi hotspot
elsewhere in the building. The signal was weak after passing through the
concrete floor, and it was common to lose my connection for a few seconds.
I was also having to reboot my phone, a Motorola One Action running Android
10, several times per day because it would stop being able to connect to
the WiFi.

Now that I am using a router in my apartment, I am only having to restart
my phone every couple of days. Apparently there is a memory leak or
resource leak every time the WiFi connection is lost and has to be
reestablished.

[nlug] good web logger?

2021-04-21 Thread John Wallace
I realize this is a Linux group, however I'm hoping some of you have
some OSX experience.

Is there a good solution for logging web connections on a Mac? I'm
thinking of something real simple and lightweight thats not easy to
detect. An open source solution would be a plus. A command line daemon
would be ideal. I'm not looking for anything that opens a port and
takes remote commands, just something that will write a simple log to
a file on the system of all outgoing web destinations.

Just as a small point of clarification there is zero indication that IBM
had anything to do with this, both from speaking with insiders at the
'hat, my connection to the CentOS Project, or the timelines involved.

This also dates back to the 2019 release of CentOS 8 which was delayed
by politics which have since been verified to been a fight over whether
to release 8 or not at all. They didn't have the spine to kill it so
they let it go GA knowing full well that they would be killing it off
in the near(ish) future. It would have been far better for all
involved, consumers and the 'hat both, if they would have never let
CentOS-8 see the light of day.

Disclaimer: I have been part of the CentOS project for 10+ years; take
what I say as you will.

Any '%' in a crontab needs to be escaped as it has special meaning to

will be changed into newline characters, and all data after the first %
will be sent to the command as standard input."

The flow is Fedora ELN -> Stream -> RHEL where Stream is (effectively)
RHEL X.Y+1. At least this is how it is on paper; how the flow will work
in a few months when the rest of the tooling is in place... that remains

I am having problems trying to keep one shared version of my password
database between my phone and laptop. I am using KeePass2Android on my
cell phone and KeePass on my Windows laptop (I haven't set KeePass up on
my Linux partition yet). I exported my passwords from the phone as an

on my Google Drive) using KeePass on the laptop. No errors were
reported. However, when I then try to open the password database using
KeePass2Android on the phone, it reports that the database on Google

Otherwise, can you recommend a solution that will work on Android,
Windows 10, and Linux, using a database shared between all three?

[nlug] Not coming to meeting 03/10/2020

2020-03-09 Thread John F. Eldredge
I am now working as a contractor for Deloitte, at their office in the AT
building downtown (the Batman Building). Unfortunately, I learned today
that someone who worked in that building tested positive for a coronavirus
infection. Everyone in that building will be working from home temporarily
while the building is being disinfected. I hopefully haven't been exposed,
but will be staying home tomorrow night, as a precaution. I don't want to
share the bug, if I have it.

Re: [nlug] question for any Windows gurus

2019-12-11 Thread John F. Eldredge
The problem is that I am creating a utility program, intended to be run by
ordinary users, which will check whether there is a new version of certain
proprietary software on the server, and download and install it if it finds
an update. On a Unix or Linux machine, I would set this app to run under a
privileged user ID. Is there a Windows version of this capability?

[nlug] question for any Windows gurus

2019-12-11 Thread john
I know this isn't a Linux question, but I am hoping someone in the group may
know the answer. On a client's system, I need to be able to retrieve files
from a hidden network share. This share has a name ending in a dollar sign,
which keeps it from showing up in Windows Explorer. I can browse to this
share in Windows Explorer by typing in the UNC path, including the dollar
sign. However, trying to connect to this share via code fails, with an error
message indicating that the share isn't available. How do I connect to it
via code?

RE: [nlug] [OT] Visual Basic Question

2019-11-25 Thread john
OK, I found a work-around. I have to use an additional, undocumented step.

Using fs As FileStream = New FileStream(thisFile, FileMode.Open)

Using reader As StreamReader = New StreamReader(fs)

fileText = reader.ReadLine()

End Using

End Using

I found examples of code online that used my earlier approach, so I am guessing
that the need to wrap the file into a FileStream is new, and Microsoft hasn’t
bothered to update the documentation, since all of their examples are using
hard-coded file paths, not variables.

The “Using” statements are a way to make Visual Basic handle the garbage
collection once the objects are no longer in scope.

Subject: [nlug] [OT] Visual Basic Question

I am trying to code a Visual Basic 2019 console app that makes use of the
StreamReader object to read text from a file. According to the Microsoft
documentation for the StreamReader object, when it is initialized, you pass a
string with the path of the file to be opened, such as

Using reader as StreamReader = new StreamReader(“c:\sample.txt”)

However, all of the Microsoft documentation has the path hard-coded, not as a
variable. In my code, I am declaring a variable as type string, calculating
its value at runtime, and passing that string to StreamReader as an argument.

Dim thisFile as string

Using reader as StreamReader = new StreamReader(thisFile)

This results in a compile-time error, BC30311 Value of type ‘String’ cannot be
converted to ‘Stream’

What data type do I need to declare the variable as, instead of as a string,
for this to compile and work?

RE: [nlug] [OT] Visual Basic Question

2019-11-25 Thread john
Intellisense says to use a string argument. My guess is that I have run into a
managed-code vs. unmanaged-code issue, and that a literal argument is being
silently cast to the proper managed-code string type, but I haven’t found any
documentation saying how to declare a managed-code string.

Subject: RE: [nlug] [OT] Visual Basic Question

You probably need to create a new STREAM object first (using the STRING
pathname). I’m not VB oriented, but that would be my initial guess. What does
Intellisense say about the StreamReader’s argument types?

This is merely an indication that someone or something ran a manual
rpm operation that updated the databases outside of yum's tracking.
This will resolve the next time yum updates its databases or you
reconcile history manually with "yum history sync"

The sitting and waiting sounds like bdb spinning on a journal lock on
/var/lib/rpm/__db.00?; make sure there are no rpm or yum processes
running and then move those files out of the way or just nuke 'em. In
some cases you will need to rebuild rpm's databases but on 7 that should
be pretty rare.

If the above doesn't resolve it please pop into ircs://freenode.net/#centos
and we'll be happy to assist you with a bit less latency.

[nlug] Locked out of the meeting

2018-09-11 Thread John F. Eldredge
I discovered a drawback tonight to meeting at the VACO offices. I had to
stay at work until about 6:00 PM, so didn't get to the VACO offices until
6:40 PM, ten minutes after the posted starting time for the NLUG meeting.
The outside doors were locked, and I discovered that I didn't have the cell
phone number of anyone likely to be at the meeting, only email addresses,
work phones, and home phones. I posted a message to the NLUG mailing list,
asking for someone to let me in, and waited outside until 7:30 PM, before
going home.

There are likely to be future attendees who will arrive a few minutes late,
and be unable to get in. I tried calling the VACO office, but just got
voice mail. We need to have the doors unlocked until at least 7:00 PM on
meeting nights, or else post a number people can call to be let into the
building.

However, from painful first-hand experience, if hardware failure means that
corrupted data is being passed to the backup system, and the backup system

My definition of the vendor lock-in is the same. Controller failure is much

forensically determined I guess, but that may require non trivial effort.
I've heard of a PACS system where the controller failure was forgotten out
of the contract (between the hospital and the vendor), but it happened and
it was NOT pretty.

With LVM it's all software, so you don't even have to move the data off, if
you find any controller with JBOD capability which can show the disks again
to the system.

I also often come across systems which 10+ years old, still running fine,
but the controllers become my first thought in my mind. The best if you
have some spare one. Still SATA, but yes, PATA for example is getting
really outdated.

more than a few years old. As the disks tend to fail more often than the
controller, how you formatted and managed the disks isn't likely to be the
main issue.

The bigger issue that you're going to encounter is a change in hardware
specification. Imagine that you have a storage room full of IDE disks, and
you needed to get information off of them, when today, the prevailing
standard is SATA. Or, if you're into tape backups, imagine a room full of
backup tapes and being unable to find a working drive that takes that
specific tape.

True. LVM is not remotely equivalent, but can be utilized towards use cases

RAID 50 for example but as you experienced, they can age and things can go
wrong. Some of them are true hardware RAID, like lats time I dealt with an
AMCC which has PowerPC CPU on board to perform the parity computations and
related stuff. But for today's CPUs that's not much. If you have enough
spare cards that can be enough fine.
One thing I also learned long time ago: make sure to have a BBU and that
the BBU battery is charged & functional, otherwise you can be impacted by a
significant speed hit because the card won't cache as much / caches
differently for data integrity reasons.

[nlug] Using Android phone as hotspot for Kindle

2018-04-02 Thread John F. Eldredge
I have a Kindle 8th generation device, with WiFi but not cellular service.
I would occasionally like to use my Android phone as a hotspot, to sync the
Kindle when I don't have WiFi available. I have used the phone successfully
as a hotspot with a WiFi-only Android tablet. However, when I try this with
the Kindle, the MAC address shows up temporarily as a connected device, but
with an IP address of 0.0.0.0. After 20 seconds or so, the Kindle gives up
and displays a dialog box saying that it can't connect. On my home WiFi
system, the Kindle connects without a hitch.

What I suspect is happening is that the DHCP handshake was implemented
differently on the Kindle and the phone. The phone is a Motorola Z2 Play,
running Android 7.1.1. Does anyone have a suggestion for a work-around?

Further testing has revealed that I can connect to it fine if
I set it to not have a password. Setting a password (and
using WPA2 security) results in the "incorrect password"
error. It is definitely a DD-WRT bug, rather than a hardware
issue.

I verified that my router is using WPA2 Personal and TKIP. On the
phone side, there is no way to specify that; I suppose it queries
the router when it tries to connect. I can connect to the physical
interface without a problem (it is also using WPA2 Personal and
TKIP), and I can connect to the virtual interface if I set its
security to "None", but trying to connect to it with it using WPA2
Personal results in the phone displaying "authenticating" for
about half a second, then popping up a dialog box that says I
entered the wrong password, even though I entered the correct
password. I have also posted a message on the DD-WRT forum about
this issue.

I am still getting the same results.

[nlug] [OT] Gmail question

2017-10-02 Thread John F. Eldredge
I have several email addresses that I use for different purposes. I am
considering routing all of them through my Gmail account for
automatic-filtering purposes. However, I have a question about this. Can a
Gmail filter be based partly upon the address the message was originally
sent to, so that a message sent to one email account can be routed
differently than a similar message sent to another account? I have searched
online, and can't find a clear answer to this question.

[nlug] Re: VOIP only Android app?

2017-07-13 Thread John Halter

You can use FaceTime Audio, which uses wifi instead of cellular, on your
iPhones. I think you could also use Google Voice.

[nlug] further question about job posts

2017-06-28 Thread John F. Eldredge
Would a local computer-related job post be acceptable, even if it isn't
strictly a Linux position? A lot of network-related jobs involve supporting a
mix of operating systems, not just Linux. You are also likely to see some
programming positions on other environments, such as Windows, Android, and Unix.

Re: [nlug] Network Cabling Infrastructure Design Sr. Engineer || Rhode island , RI

2017-06-28 Thread John F. Eldredge
How broadly should we define "local"? Would a job opening in Jackson, TN, or
Chattanooga, be too far away? Should we restrict it to jobs in counties
adjoining Davidson County? A lot of tech firms are opening offices in Franklin
and Brentwood.

No, I think job posts should be welcome, if they are relevant to the list. A
job post should have something to do with Linux and either be a local job or a

[nlug] Android question

2017-06-14 Thread John F. Eldredge
Does anyone know of a way of preventing the Gallery app from displaying
album-cover images from my music files, while still allowing music player
apps to find the music? I know about .nomedia files to block scanning of a
directory, but those block the music as well as the images.
