RE: Perhaps OT: Frustration level rising with IIS/ASP

2009-02-04 Thread Ken Schaefer
Does IUSR_ have execute permissions to cmd.exe?

Running Process Monitor is probably a good idea. You'd probably need to run
this on the IIS box to see what it's being denied to.

If it's a problem accessing a UNC share, you can probably look in the Security
event log of the remote machine to see what user account is being denied
access. If it's a problem actually invoking a command prompt or instantiating
some other object, then you'd need Process Monitor on the IIS box.

Cheers
Ken

2009-02-04 Thread Louis, Joe
I'm not sure if you can prevent him from changing it, but iirc, you can have it
already in the logon field by adding it to the winlogon key in the registry.
Try adding his logon to defaultusername. Then all he'd have to do is enter the
password.

Hi all!

I would like to prevent one of my users from changing his assigned Windows
login name. All I want him to do is enter the password only in order to log on
to our domain. Is this possible? The OS is Windows XP Pro and we have an
Windows 2003 Active Directory domain.

The decision was made to use acrobat standard. There was some problems with
foxit reader 2.1, and it was booted. However when foxit reader 2.1 was
installed, it was a faster viewer. This is a single server environment, so it's
a little difficult to test foxit reader on this server.

I think the intent of "check that off" was "put a check in that box".
Simple file sharing must be enabled to give you the "make this folder
private" feature.

But that privacy feature doesn't cause a password prompt for the drive or
folder. it simply blocks access for those who are not yourself.

2009-02-04 Thread mse...@ont.com
Looking for simple way to password protect NTFS drive or folder on Windows
XP Pro. Used to be able to do this:

Select the folder you wish to encrypt.
Right-click the folder and click Properties.
Click the Sharing tab.
Check the box Make this folder private
Click Apply and then Ok.

Not sure if this was for Windows XP Home only but do not see it in Windows
XP Pro. Do I have to use something like:

AxCrypt
WinCry
Folder Guard

Thanks,

Mike

Hi all!

I would like to prevent one of my users from changing his assigned Windows
login name. All I want him to do is enter the password only in order to log on
to our domain. Is this possible? The OS is Windows XP Pro and we have an
Windows 2003 Active Directory domain.

TIA

RE: ClarkConnect

2009-02-04 Thread Gene Giannamore
Had a similar thing happen to a prior customer of mine. Hotel reservation
system was blocking their customer (an Inn). Apparently an infected computer
was spamming the hotel reservation system email address, and the hosting
company blocked the domain because of some kind of mismatch with the email
address and FQDN. They never explained it really, took a week before they
resolve it, because the reservations were not working right and some sales
person was worried about loosing a customer.

Adobe may be your problem. You might try an alternate PDF viewer. Always
avoid Adobe if at all possible.

Good call.

Haven't done that. I think I'll need to do it on the IIS machine.

Thanks.

I was under the impression that the server is down and won't power up,
but I'm not sure by how you have this worded. Can you please clarify
this? Some have replied that you should install OpenManage, but if the
server is down, that is not an option. Don't suppose you have another
1850 in house that you could swap the power supply with to verify if
it's the culprit? If the server is down, and you have no support and no
spare parts, you have very limited options.

Hi Folks,

I have an out-of-warranty Dell PowerEdge 1850. I *think* the power
supply has failed. I had to down the system for 30 minutes or so, then
attempted to power it on. I cannot be certain since, oddly, there are
no error lights or anything. All I get is a blue blinking status light,
which is "general error" according to Dell's voluminous docs. No beeps,
buzzes, whistles, etc. There is no disk activity, but the rear fans
come one as soon as the power cables are engaged.

I don't mind replacing the power supply, but I want to somehow verify.
Anyone have any ideas?

We have a page on our intranet server that is doing some very funky things.

Namely, it mostly, but not always, gives out this error message:

 Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a0046'

 Permission denied

 /intranet/webquery/SearchResultObsoleteParts.asp, line 119

That line of code is

 objShell.Run strPSExec,0,true

Which is just a reference to this line:

 strPSExec = "\\inetserver\Queries\psexec.exe -w
e:\directory1\directory2 \\avante -u mycompany\_udtpuller -p
ThePassword cscript GetUDTData.vbs COMP_ALERT " & strPartNum & " -r "
& strDataSetNum

We're using an older version of psexec, just to avoid issues with
dismissing the EULA. The page used to work at one point, but now it's
not working well at all - something changed in December, AFAICT, but
nobody's fessing up, nor can I find anything different.

After googling and a bit of thinking, I followed the directions in
this article - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/197964/ - which seemed
to clear it up for about 20 minutes, but now it's not working again,
and I am not able to figure out why.

Anyone have thoughts on what I should be looking at/for?

There's also the old standby of pulling everything off the motherboard (drive
controllers, RAM, CPU, etc) and powering it up with just PS and motherboard.
Add one device, rinse and repeat until you get a change in beeps or light
blinks. I've had machines start working just by taking them apart and
reinstalling the parts. I've seen RAID drives come back online, machines able
to power up that previously did nothing, etc.

Thanks,

I was under the impression that the server is down and won't power up, but
I'm not sure by how you have this worded. Can you please clarify this?
Some have replied that you should install OpenManage, but if the server is
down, that is not an option. Don't suppose you have another 1850 in house
that you could swap the power supply with to verify if it's the culprit?
If the server is down, and you have no support and no spare parts, you
have very limited options.

Find a compatible power supply and attach it to the computer
temporarily. Or take the PSU out of the dead computer and see if it
will power on a known-good computer.

It should be, but it isn't. As far as US and international
copyright law goes, that is as illegal as a "pirated" copy of
Microsoft Windows or Office. Have a nice day.

Don't like it? Write your congressional representatives and tell

Help: PDF viewing slow over WAN via RDP/TS

Have not had much success finding a solution to the problem of
viewing/scrolling PDF files (especially scanned), from the 2003 terminal

local. It affects all user profiles remotely.
Has anyone tried solutions like Riverbed's Steelhead or Cisco's WAAS? Did it
help with RDP? I did run across an article about Cisco's WAAS optimizing ICA.

I think they have a Diag CD on the website too that will also give you

pretty beefy install for one-time-use.

What OS is important. IUSR account doesn't have permissions to cmd.exe (and a

Doesn't explain it was working, and now it's not, but one thing to check.

What about GPOs applying to this server?

We have a page on our intranet server that is doing some very funky things.

Namely, it mostly, but not always, gives out this error message:

 Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a0046'

 Permission denied

 /intranet/webquery/SearchResultObsoleteParts.asp, line 119

That line of code is

 objShell.Run strPSExec,0,true

Which is just a reference to this line:

 strPSExec = "\\inetserver\Queries\psexec.exe -w
e:\directory1\directory2 \\avante -u mycompany\_udtpuller -p

A lot of VAR's can sell you Cisco certified used equipment. And it's
verified so you can add it to your smartnet no questions asked, if you
care. I just picked up an 8k 3750 for under 4k. Other than my local

find most anything you need.

eBay is a really really crappy place to buy Cisco.

Try "used cisco" in Google. Seriously, try it.

Every one of the companies listed on the first couple search results
pages is 100% legitimate.

We dump all firewall and other configs to a TFTP server so that they can be
restored. We don't care about the OS so much as being able to quickly put the
correct configuration back in place. DPM is especially nice when using Exchange

Really you should have the other person change their password or change if for
them. If that does not work go to HR and say so and so is using so and so
username to log in to bypass security blah blah blah

If those option do not work and you really want to only let that person log
into that computer... I do not believe you can lock down the username field
but you can allow or deny users from logging in locally through the local
security policy. "Allow log on locally" and "Deny log on locally" use them
wisely.

As appears to be the theme: +1

Passwords exist for a reason. Use them. Properly.

I don't know of any way to prevent someone from changing the logon
name. However, there is a facility to have a Windows computer
automatically logon to a given account. It does involve storing the
plaintext password for logon in the Windows registry. The user can
bypass the autologon by holding down the [SHIFT] key when the
startup/logon process reaches that point. But it may be suitable for
some uses.

You are trying to address a behavioral issue with a technological one.
HR is the appropriate venue for this. Maybe some security awareness
training as well . . .

On a side note, if the other user account that this person is using is
not supposed to log on to that computer, you can also set the login
restrictions for that account to prevent it from logging into the
computer in question. But the password would still need to be changed .

The site is www.backgroundchecks.com. I can access this site from
outside our network without using the https. But when I try to access
the site, within the network, it goes to a google search. Then when you
click on then link, it gives you "This page cannot be displayed". The
site and their IP have been added to a whitelist in the firewall.

RE: Preventing user from changing login name

2009-02-04 Thread Pierre Camilleri
They are using someone else's login name. That is why I wish to prevent the
user from changing his/her login name. I would like that he/she would only be
able to enter the password. Possible?

2009-02-04 Thread Pierre Camilleri
No. The user is restricted from logging onto other workstations. What I would
like to do is prevent the user from changing his login name. In other words I
do not wish him to use another login name.

Re: Backup Software

2009-02-04 Thread Jonathan Link
I switched to ntbackup from BE. Scriptable, lightweight, easy to manage.
Of course, as with all things, it depends on your backup needs.

I switched from BE to DPM. I really like it, but I have a pretty much
completely Microsoft infrastructure. If you don't it would not be so
great.

Just seeing if there is a backup solution that people have migrated to
from Backup Exec.

What does UltraBac do differently or offer that BE doesn't?

1. Please define "better".

2. Seriously, why are you looking away from a product with which you are

familiar?

3. Our NYC office uses BE. I was sent a "How to" with a series of
screen shots, etc regarding their use of BE. That doc has me clinging
even more tightly to UltraBac (which I've been using for perhaps 10+
years)!
