We recently got a proposal to replace a HP Color LaserJet 3800 with a Kyocera

I was wondering if anyone had anything good (or bad) to say about Kyocera?
I have no experience with any of their products, but they cost per page looks
very good!
And of course they assure me the quality is equal if not better than the HP.

Re: Management of laptops

2010-07-09 Thread Andrew Levicki
Hi Tom,

DirectAccess will address this, but as it requires a Windows Server 2008 R2
AD infrastructure, IPv6 and PKI, it may or may not be appropriate depending
on the size of your org, so Brian's question was valid, in my humble
opinion.

RE: wireless transmit to projector

2010-07-09 Thread Ralph Smith
It is external - it has a VGA output and audio output. It seems like it
should work with any projector that accepts VGA input. It works pretty
well, although it does require a dual core processor on the computer to
show video.

Disclosure: I work for Cables To Go.

You could try the Cables To Go TruLink Wireless VGA products:
http://www.cablestogo.com/product_list.asp?cat_id=3808

I've used the USB to VGA products and they worked okay for 2D stuff.
Video playback was poor. This was about 2 years ago after initial
product offering. I've not personally used the Wireless but, depending
on the distance and obstruction, it can handle up to HD quality
resolutions/bandwidth while playing video.

If you'd like to email me off-list I could put you in touch with a sales
person in your region and market. I would hope the pricing is a little
nicer that way!

Folks,

Any suggestions on products to manage laptops? We have a number of nomadic

or wireless connection, but not at any of my locations (these staff work
off-site).

Staff don't have much access, they are all "users". I am looking for a product
whereby I can enforce similar content filtering/web surfing filtering as my
corporate fire walls. I assume I'd need some sort of client for the laptops
that would occasionally check in to a central system for updates. We are a
Fortinet shop, and I'm looking at the Forticlient, but am looking at
alternatives. We have an issue with viruses on these machines (usually
blocked, but I get the notices), and that's usually from staff going to web
sites that would be blocked at the corporate level.

Suggestions appreciated.

Tom

I got a document to reset the P/W, however it requires the "password override

Any ideas?

Two old golfing buddies who had played together for decades were coming up
the 13th hole at the local muni. The 13th borders a highway and as they
reached the green a funeral procession motored by. One of the golfers took
off his hat and respectfully kept his head down until the last car had
passed. When he looked up and put his hat back on his friend said, "That
was the most civilized, most respectful thing I've ever seen you do." To
which the first golfer replied, "Well, she was a darn good wife."

HP x1600 NAS ILO P/W

2010-07-09 Thread Stefan Jafs
Ok I got my new HP NAS, however the little sticker with the ILO Passsword
was missing, no problem I'll call HP, 4 hours later, I'm still fighting with
it!

I got a document to reset the P/W, however it requires the “password
override switch” to disable the ILO P/W, however, where is it? No indication
under the cover, I looked at the motherboard, can’t find anything.

Any ideas?

Did you hear about the girl who came home from first grade? Her mom
asked her what she learned at school today, and the girl answered "we
learned how to make babies".

The mom thought about it a minute, and decided she had to know just what
they were teaching her kid, so she said "well, how do you make babies?"

The kid said, "It's easy, you just drop the "y" and add "ies".

Management of laptops

2010-07-09 Thread Tom Miller
Folks,

Any suggestions on products to manage laptops? We have a number of nomadic
users who use their issued laptops with aircards. Sometimes they have a wired
or wireless connection, but not at any of my locations (these staff work

Tom

Is that cost per month totally or per month per machine? If that is per
month per machine you could get a systems management product for that
cost. SCCM is a fine management product. I moved to the KBOX (Dell

DHCPv6

2010-07-09 Thread Jason Gauthier
Greetings,

I'm struggling with an issue with DHCPv6. I'm using this, effectively,
as stateless. I have a Cisco router set up to multicast router
advertisements. It is doing so successfully, setting the options
"Managed" to false, and "Other" to true.

I have confirmed through network traces and Windows 7 DHCPv6 event logs
that it is receiving the announcements, and setting the options
correctly.

This is working good!

Now, here comes the part that I'm struggling with. Once the options are
set, the client machine should (and does) poll for DHCPv6 options only.

Again, I've confirmed though network traces that this is happening
successfully.

15:03:45.012474 IP6 (hlim 1, next-header UDP (17) payload length: 110)
fe80::188b:8ff9:305c:71a3.546 > ff02::1:2.547: [udp sum ok] dhcp6
solicit (xid=fd9725 (elapsed time 3100) (client ID hwaddr/time type 1
time 316484303 00155d320606) (IA_NA IAID:369104221 T1:0 T2:0) (Client
FQDN) (vendor class) (option request DNS name DNS vendor-specific info
Client FQDN).

My DHPCv6 server (running netmon) can definitely see the multicast
requests sent to FF02:0:0:0:0:0:2:1. However, it doesn't respond,
acknowledge, or otherwise seem to care.

Options 23 (DNS Recursive Name) and options 24 (Domain Search List) are
set.

I have done this on two different networks, two different DHCPv6
servers. Neither of them responds. Even the statistics do not count up
that there was a solicit message.

I am intending to open a ticket with MS, but sasupport seems to be
non-functional for me at the moment.

So, I thought I would ask here. All my clients are Windows 7/2008R2,
and my two servers are 2008 R2.

Thanks for reading.

Jason

Understood, but encryption at rest only offers one level of protection.

Without encryption in motion, there are more places for the data to be
exposed.

Plus, it will be a relatively expensive activity from a performance

RE: DNS Scavenging

2010-07-09 Thread Brian Desmond
There's a cmd line tool bundled with DNS called dnscmd. You can use it to make
these sorts of bulk changes. What I would do is either a) use this tool to
enumerate all the records in the zone and then set the flag, or, you could set
the timestamp directly to -1 or 0 (I forget what it is) in AD and have the same
effect as it may be easier to just do an ldap query and pipe that into
something (e.g. adfind | admod).

Thanks,

Sorry what I meant to say was Enable scavenging on all the zones but remove
the "delete this record when it becomes stale".
Can you elaborate on If you want to touch all the records in a zone you'll need
a loop on top of dnscmd.?

Hi-

If you turn off scavenging on the zones you'll defeat the purpose of having it
enabled. You don't need to touch the settings on any of those SRV records for
AD. Likewise with the PTR records you shouldn't need to touch them.

If you want to touch all the records in a zone you'll need a loop on top of
dnscmd.

Hi All,

I am looking to set up DNS Scavenging on our DNS server.
And I have a few questions:

Should I turn off scavenging on the Forward Lookup Zones's and its sub
folders? By removing the "delete this record when it becomes stale"
There are a lot of_ldap srv and HOST A records with the scavenging set.
Realistically these servers will always on

We also have about 10+ subnets and 2 of these subnets contain all our main
servers which have DHCP reservations etc
Some of these DNS entries have "delete this record when it becomes stale" set
and some do not have this set.
Can I force to have this setting turned off on all 512 hosts in these 2 x /24
subnets?

Anything else I want to watch out for?

I agree, and if you if you are using high-end SAN Based Disk, then
stealing the physical drives of the database files and its backups rest
on, wont be an issue, unless they stole the SAN along with it, then you
got bigger physical security and access control issues to fry, which
doesn't seem like it in your case.

So back to my other suggestions along with Ken's Bitlocker can do it, or
the 3rd party encryption utilizes,

Two questions,

One how many databases are you moving to SQL 2008, maybe there is the
ability to go with Enterprise Edition R2 for the transparent data
encryption you are seeking, and just have 1 database cluster accordingly
( Active/ Passive). You don't have to go per-processor for licensing,
but Cal management can be a pain otherwise. Especially if you have proxy
boxes ( webservers, other applications etc etc) connecting to the
database backend, then Per Processor solves a lot of your problems.

Other than that, I know that RED Gate SQL backup, and Quests Litespeed
can produce encrypted backups.

The second question, is why do you need to encrypt the whole database?
why not just encrypt the rows with the sensitive data itself, is this a
PCI DSS requirement they want you to do ? Could not the backups
themselves be encrypted to meet the requirements?

All,

We are looking to replace our database servers with new hardware and
software and will be running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition
(64bit), with SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard on each machine. Also, each
machine connects into a MD3000.

What would be the best way to encrypt the entire database? I know this
can be done with the enterprise version of SQL Server 2008 R2, but due
to the cost per processor (for unlimited CALs), we will be going with
the Standard edition.

RE: Database Encryption

2010-07-09 Thread Ziots, Edward
ASB,

They are only specifying encryption of the database, we would assume its
at rest, but it has to be unencrypted when its being utilized for the
application etc etc to read the data from the database itself.
Encryption at rest on the disk would be either SQL or the 3rd party
disks, if they needed encryption for the data returned from the DB
server to the application and back to the end-user, then a combination
of IPSEC and SSL and strong authentication should be used, along with
proper database security and auditing of user actions accordingly.

I would look at it something like this:

Task: Data at rest

DB Server - Encryption of Backups

Task Data in motion: IPSEC between the requesting application/service
and the database server (Use ESP) (assuming Web Server is only system
that is allowed to talk to DB server to request information, adjust
accordingly)

DB ServerIPSEC (ESP)--WEBSERVER---SSL V3/TLSV1-Client (2
Factor Authentication)

(Strong Auditing of sensitive fields)

Verification of Encrypted channel between DB and Web

Protection of Web front end or middle tier from WEB application Attacks,
especially XSS/CSRF and SQLI (Either Source code review and fixing, or
WAF as a compensating control, until the code is fixed)

No AD HOC reporting directly to the database.

IPS/HIDS on the webserver/DB for defense in depth.

Thoughts? Additional things you would look at in this type of
architecture?

The plan agreed to by management was to roll out Windows 7 over two
quarters - the first quarter of CY 2011 and the second quarter of CY
2011, which are the last quarter of FY 2010 and first quarter of FY
2011.

This would

1) split the cost across budge years

2) allow IT to get training and to iron out any kinks in deployed applications.

I agree it's past time, but we're slow to go with things around here.

RE: DNS Scavenging

2010-07-09 Thread Fergal O'Connell
Sorry what I meant to say was Enable scavenging on all the zones but remove
the "delete this record when it becomes stale".
Can you elaborate on If you want to touch all the records in a zone you'll need
a loop on top of dnscmd.?

Subject: RE: DNS Scavenging

RE: Database Encryption

2010-07-09 Thread Ken Schaefer
What threat are you actually trying to protect against? The application will
need to access the data in cleartext (since you are not using in-field
encryption of data). So, the only threat that I can see you mitigating is theft
of the server, or theft of the disks in the server. You could just use
Bitlocker to handle that.

Two questions,

One how many databases are you moving to SQL 2008, maybe there is the ability
to go with Enterprise Edition R2 for the transparent data encryption you are
seeking, and just have 1 database cluster accordingly ( Active/ Passive). You
don't have to go per-processor for licensing, but Cal management can be a pain
otherwise. Especially if you have proxy boxes ( webservers, other applications
etc etc) connecting to the database backend, then Per Processor solves a lot of
your problems.

Other than that, I know that RED Gate SQL backup, and Quests Litespeed can
produce encrypted backups.

The second question, is why do you need to encrypt the whole database? why not
just encrypt the rows with the sensitive data itself, is this a PCI DSS
requirement they want you to do ? Could not the backups themselves be encrypted
to meet the requirements?

Just some thoughts on this thread...

Or buy an application layer firewall.

Technically it's not host headers that are the issue - it's running multiple
websites off a single IP. But given a small problem that we have with IPv4
addressing, sometimes it's necessary to run multiple sites off a single IPv4
address.

We're trying to block whole countries with a list of 100's of IP/Subnets and it

RE: DNS Scavenging

2010-07-09 Thread Brian Desmond
Hi-

If you turn off scavenging on the zones you'll defeat the purpose of having it
enabled. You don't need to touch the settings on any of those SRV records for
AD. Likewise with the PTR records you shouldn't need to touch them.

If you want to touch all the records in a zone you'll need a loop on top of
dnscmd.

Thanks for the links.

I'm not dead-set on any specific card, but i've had success with the ATI
FireMV quadcards. Since this is a rack-mounted 2U box, I'm going to get 2
half-height, low-profile cards, if available.

It should only have to wait on the network.

It would seem that you have some network connectivity issues. Any ACLs

We have about 130 Kyocera FS-1300 and some FS-4000 units here. A few years ago
we moved to a "lease to purchase" agreement with ESI, which is a Xerox company.
Most supplies are included and maintenance, which save us money as it seems
our users must beat printers with clubs. A few have had issues, but none more
than the HP units we have. And supporting just two models is much better than
the various HP flavors we had. The HP 1100/1300 units were c-r-a-p!

We also have Xerox Workcentres which also work very well.

As others said support is important. Our support with ESI is pretty good.

Re: Kyocera?

2010-07-09 Thread Roger Wright
My previous employer had about 10 Kyocera MFP's under contract. The
machines performed as well as any other vendor's machines I've worked
with (HP, Canon, Minolta). We did, however, have issues with some of
the drivers on the print server (W2k3 box). But driver issues aren't
uncommon with other vendors, either.

I'd echo that support and service is really what's important. If the
machine performs well most of the time but you have to pull teeth to
get decent support, then it's no bargain. I really like the Canon
machines we have now but sometimes I think I need to set up a cot for
a service tech to stay on site. It seems like it's always two days
before they can get someone here. That's what I don't like, and
that's what would push me to look elsewhere.

We use Kyocera in most of our

We had initial problems with the driver because the of the software we use to

It's not just a lost secure channel is it? That's what normally gives the "no
logon servers" when you try to log on to the domain, you can get around it by
rejoining. We used to use nltest to reset these without rejoining, but that was
wy back in the NT4 days. There's probably something different you can do
now :-)

if it's the old "computer account missing" error, then that could point someone
dicking around with the account itself, to use a technical term. What's the
actual error message you are receiving when an account is "corrupted"?

This happens once in awhile here, I've always attributed it to comps

Can someone point me to an MS article that talks about this? Not really
having an issue with this, but we do have the occasional corrupt
computer account and standard procedure is to remove the computer from
the domain and rejoin. Always works. Management is now asking what
causes this, and I don't have a good resource that discusses possible
causes.

Re: Possible causes of corrupt computer accounts in AD

2010-07-09 Thread James Rankin
It's not just a lost secure channel is it? That's what normally gives the
"no logon servers" when you try to log on to the domain, you can get around
it by rejoining. We used to use nltest to reset these without rejoining, but
that was wy back in the NT4 days. There's probably something different
you can do now :-)

if it's the old "computer account missing" error, then that could point
someone dicking around with the account itself, to use a technical term.
What's the actual error message you are receiving when an account is
"corrupted"?

I got one for my family for Xmas and also bought an external DVD drive and 2GB
RAM. Swapped memory right away out of the box and upgraded XP Home (or whatever
it was called) to Win 7. I'm assuming you could do the same with XP Pro.

BTW, it runs very good with Win 7.

We're trying to block whole countries with a list of 100's of IP/Subnets

RE: Kyocera?

2010-07-09 Thread John Aldrich
Very good point. We lease our copiers and pay maintenance which covers the
toners as well as any service calls. We've had a very good relationship with
our vendor. They are very prompt in sending a tech out, normally within 24
hours (we're 90 minutes away from them, so they tend to have to schedule a
tech call for us.) I do like our tech as he's pretty good at figuring out
how to work around any issues that may come up while working on the
copier/printer.

broken the longest or most often. That being said we are a Canon shop and
have tried many others over the years. Ricoh, Kyocera, Lanier but always
end up going right back to a Canon.

Kyocera TASKAlfa 250ci color copier.
I was wondering if anyone had anything good (or bad) to say about Kyocera?
I have no experience with any of their products, but they cost per page
looks very good!
And of course they assure me the quality is equal if not better than the HP.

RE: Kyocera?

2010-07-09 Thread John Aldrich
We have one of those. It's pretty nice, but we don't use it a whole lot. On
the other hand, we have a couple B&W-only (but scan in color) KM-5050
machines which are basically the same machine without the color option (at
least that's what I'm told by our vendor.) They work very well. Occasionally
there will be something "glitch" in them.

My main complaint about the Kyocera machines is that they did away with the
hardware buttons in favor of a touch screen, and it can take a couple
seconds for the screen to recognize that a button has been pushed or at
least to accept a button push.

RE: Kyocera?

2010-07-09 Thread Bob Hartung
We've had reasonably good luck with Toshiba eStudio copiers.

As far as comparing cost per page, that's a challenge. The copier vendors
always want to bundle maintenance and consumables into a contract that gives
you a per page cost with a monthly limit. If you go over, you pay a per page
additional cost.

Invariably, if you replace a color printer with a color copier, you'll get
higher usage than your history shows because in all liklihood you'll retire a
monochrome copier somewhere as well.
