Add/Remove programs showing blank on Windows 2003 SP2 Server

2010-11-15 Thread Haritwal, Dhiraj
Hello Everybody,

I am unable to see programs list under Add/Remove programs in one of our
Windows 2003 SP2 server. I have tried to run regsvr32 appwiz.cpl also, not no
difference. There was a Fixit for this on MS Site, tried that also but still no
solution. Tried to run sfc /scannow / checkdisk also but no solution. It's only
showing "please wait while the list is being populated". tried to restart
this server as well, but no luck.

Kindly let me know what could be the problem & how to resolve it.

Regards,

Dhiraj

RE: show arp table on netgear GS716T?

2010-11-15 Thread Carl Houseman
There are 3 different versions of the GS716T. The v1 manual mentions telnet,
the v2/v3 manual does not. Most likely they forgot to remove some references
to telnet and CLI commands in the v1 manual.

The v2/v3 manual does talk about searching the MAC address table through the
web GUI.

According to the index in the FM that you could RT, there is a CLI presented

Unfortunately, the manual fails to describe any of the CLI commands that are

We put them in the description field in AD, as you mentioned. If we are
troubleshooting "general use" computers where we need to know who's
logged into a particular machine, I use Hyena.

For names, we use geographical_location-position-number (Phila-IT-01,

RE: Workstation names and who it belongs to

2010-11-15 Thread Ray
We're government agency so everything has an asset tag. Our naming
convention is pretty much 3 letters (site) with the asset tag number.

We have a login script that writes login info to a centralized location in
the rare case we actually want to associate a name to a machine.

We've got an ad-hoc MS Access database which keeps track of which user a
computer is assigned to.

We're a small shop, so we don't have site codes or anything like that.
Just "FooPCnnn", where "Foo" is the abbreviated name of the company, and
"nnn" is a sequence number. I started counting at 100, for no particular
reason beyond "it looked cooler".

I learned a while ago that embedding details into a computer ID is usually
not worth it. Especially not a user ID -- equipment changes assignment too
often.

RE: Loooooong ping times

2010-11-15 Thread Jesse Rink
I'd recommend this as well.I've had issues at various clients where they
could only download at a fraction of their available internet speed
available and it always turns out they have multiple port mismatch errors
(duplexing and speed) between the internet handoff, firewall, and potential
in-line web filters. Granted that's sort of the opposite of what you're
experiencing but. Worth a mention I thought.

I'd start with disconnecting from your SonicWall, configuring and connecting

issue and need to point the finger at Comcast..

Subject: Loong ping times

Hi peoples,

I have a weird issue, and I've had it for about 3 weeks (don't worry, it's
work related!)

Our Internet connection has been really slow. Web sites time out half the
time, and just load really slowly other times.

Our connection is a Comcast connection, and I called then to see if they
could test the speed. They did, and it seemed okay to them, but then said
that we had an old cable modem. They replaced the modem, but it made no
difference.

When I use speedtest.net, or speedtest.comcast.net. I usually get good
throughput times (36 Mbps up, 7 Mbps down) but I get a ping time that is
almost ALWAYS 3146 ms. Sometimes it's 3147, sometimes it's 3145, but it's
3146 90% of the time. Weird, huh?!

So, I went to my SonicWALL and unchecked the check box that was set to
enable the DHCP server. I thought maybe having two DHCP servers (the
SonicWALL and my own internal DHCP server) was an issue. I don't even know
why the DHCP server was enabled on the firewall.

So I disabled that, and I'm still having the same issue - very long ping
times, though now it's somewhat intermittent. At times, I get a ping time of
72ms, and the others, it's right back to 3146,

So my question is, where should I be looking to fix this? Essentially, I
have two DNS servers, one DHCP server (not including the SonicWALL,) Then I
have our firewall, and then the cable modem. That's it.

Help? I have no clue how to troubleshoot this.

Evan

We've got an ad-hoc MS Access database which keeps track of which
user a computer is assigned to.

We're a small shop, so we don't have site codes or anything like
that. Just "FooPCnnn", where "Foo" is the abbreviated name of the
company, and "nnn" is a sequence number. I started counting at 100,
for no particular reason beyond "it looked cooler".

I learned a while ago that embedding details into a computer ID is
usually not worth it. Especially not a user ID -- equipment changes
assignment too often.

RE: show arp table on netgear GS716T?

2010-11-15 Thread Carl Houseman
According to the index in the FM that you could RT, there is a CLI presented
when you telnet to the device, and there's a CLI command "show
mac-address-table".

Unfortunately, the manual fails to describe any of the CLI commands that are
referenced in the index... the pages referenced do not exist in the manual.
Netgear quality at its finest.

Subject: show arp table on netgear GS716T?

I'm not very familiar with these Netgear switches. Is there a way to view the
arp table? I can't find it in the web interface.. Not even sure if there's a
command line interface on this device?

I need to locate where a machine is with a given IP address.. any tips on this
netgear gs716t box?

Thanks

I see where the problem is. Jonathan is 'jumping' not running. In order

RE: Backup exec 2010 r2

2010-11-15 Thread John Aldrich
The plan was to have VEEAM running to keep two physical machines in sync
running the same VMs on both (or at least having a "hot backup" of the other
server on another physical machine) and to use something like Backup Exec to
back up the VMs.

No, I think the idea was that it would keep two boxes synchronous, so that if

Hijack - Veeam - was RE: Backup exec 2010 r2

2010-11-15 Thread Raper, Jonathan - Eagle
Veeam is good for monitoring and mapping your vmware environment. It (Veeam
reporter, at least) is licensed per processor (not per core) if you're over 6
procs.

Its good stuff, but it is also quite expensive. If you need to be able to
monitor server sprawl (if that is a problem for you) then I would recommend it.

Needless to say, it is a luxury, not a requirement. In my little ideal world, I
wouldn't want to run without it. But could I? Sure thing.

I've played with VEEAM fairly recently for my ESXi box. Seemed to work ok
and the speed on this version was not bad at all. I remember trying it
before and the version then had REALLY bad performance.

We do:

4 char site code
3 char dept code

W or L (workstation or laptop)

Sure, it's just a bit of vbscript, I'll have a look when I'm back in the office

We have lots that are shared, that's one of the main drivers for doing it that
way, it doesn't matter who logs on, if you know you need machine XYZ but that's
all you know, you can just look in ADUC and see who is/was on it, not have to
consult a spreadsheet/database and still only know who you think should be
using it.

Re: Workstation names and who it belongs to

2010-11-15 Thread Don Kuhlman
We don't relate user names to machine names, but keep a spreadsheet or
inventory
list to say who has what equipment.

We have used some different naming standards over time. An example is:

1st char = C (computer), L (Laptop), S (Server), P (Printer)
2nd/3rd char = geographical (either state or other code for the site)
4th - 6th char = OS or other descriptor - eg WXP, SBS, 2K3
7th - 9th char = sequence 001, 002, 003

So a windows xp computer (desktop) in Georgia would be CGAWXP001
A Server in California running 2008 could be SCA2K8001

etc...

RE: Network migration advice

2010-11-15 Thread Raper, Jonathan - Eagle
I would lean toward starting from scratch, or upgrading the larger domain and
then removing users and computers from the smaller domain and adding them to
the larger. It would be a piece of cake to export user accounts from both
domains, double check the list against HR, and then import into the new AD
infrastructure. You could use Exmerge
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=429163ec-dcdf-47dc-96da-1c12d67327d5&displaylang=en
to get PSTs from the smaller Exchange environment and then use the
import-mailbox command to pull them back into the new Exchange 2010 environment.

How many OUs, how many machines, how many GPOs in each domain?

Especially if users share PCs, as they do here. We have a number of
staff who rotate between various sites, so each PC could have any of a
dozen users.

We use LANDesk, tho, and can usually match up users by searching on

Actually, it didn't seem to work (perhaps I should say it didn't do what
I needed it to do). This, however, did work the way I was hoping:

Z:\>adfind -default -f "&(objectcategory=computer)(name=2012-ACD)"
useraccountcontrol -adcsv | admod -sc ad-disable -move ou=DISABLED,DC=etc

Instead of "uacSet:2", I used the shortcut "-sc ad-disable". The latter
made the account disabled, and the former didn't - "useraccountcontrol"
stayed at 4096/0x1000 - 'WORKSTATION_TRUST_ACCOUNT'. I guess I was using
it wrong. The "-sc ad-disable" did change the useraccountcontrol to 4098
(i.e., it added in the "2" for ACCOUNTDISABLE).

No, just the names.

I did see that, but got confused. :-) So I fell back on what I knew
should work.

So now, after lunch, a quick script to open the CSV, read each name,
pass it to ADFIND, and I should be good.

Thanks

You have to pass userAccountControl over because uacSet:2 is actually doing an
OR - (userAccountrControl OR 2) => userAccountControl. I imagine you should be
able to do the move in the same operation.

Does your CSV have a list of DNs? I believe you would actually want to use the
CSV input mode in admod and pipe in that CSV file rather than using adfind.
There's an example in the help.

Besides the actual workstation name, I used to run a Kixtart script ( use
your favorite scripting tho’ ) and appended/piped information on login to a
CSV file, including logged in username and workstation name. That way I
always had a fairly current cross reference regardless of what moves (
personnel and hardware ) were made without me knowing.

I try to using computer naming conventions that have as little to do with

How much do you trust either of the existing domains?

In the short-term, upgrading one of the existing will be faster. If you
are concerned about configurations, however, started from scratch would be
better long-term.

Either of your two approaches could be made to work, depending on your
comfort level with the environment.

Might make a HUGE difference if one of the domains has small number of

RE: Workstation names and who it belongs to

2010-11-15 Thread Don Guyer
We put them in the description field in AD, as you mentioned. If we are
troubleshooting "general use" computers where we need to know who's
logged into a particular machine, I use Hyena.

For names, we use geographical_location-position-number (Phila-IT-01,
etc, etc).

How do you guys handle matching users to machines? We currently have a

obviously doesn't scale. One possibility is putting the user name in the

RE: Workstation names and who it belongs to

2010-11-15 Thread Ames Matthew B
We do:

-

Where:
letter1 = domain the machine sits in
letter2 = d for desktop, l for laptop
username = my logon name.

Each machine is assigned to a member of staff and when they leave the
machine is rebuild before assigning to someone else. If I had multiple
machines, we add a -1, -2, -3, etc onto the end of the string.

Network migration advice

2010-11-15 Thread Eric Brouwer
Greetings,

I just started work for a company with two local domains. The second domain
was acquired in a merger. Here's where it gets weird. The same guy setup
both original domains/networks so the servers have the same names. All the
servers ar old, and running Server 2003. Each domain also has an Exchange
2003 server.

I've been tasked with getting new hardware, updating the network to Server
2008 and Exchange 2010, and eliminating one of the domains. I'm not sure
what the best plan of attack would be.

My original thought:
Create a third domain, and migrate servers and roles one box at a time,
decommissioning as I go. I'm just not sure if it's possible to move
mailboxes from an Exchange 2003 server in Domain A to 2010 in Domain C.

My new thought:
Choose one of the existing domains, and upgrade it. Install a new DC, and
remove the existing one. Install Exchange, migrate users, and remove 2003.
Rinse, and repeat.

Which option makes more sense? Any other better ways to tackle this?

Thanks!

Eric
