RE: Upgrading domain....how?

2001-09-26 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

Jon,

I think you got things a bit mixed up. You cannot, repeat cannot, have a
Windows 2000 BDC on an NT 4.0 network. They don't exist. Once you install
a Windows 2000 DC, you are running Active Directory. You can still have
downlevel NT 4.0 BDC's, and the W2K DC will act as the "PDC Emulator", but
understand that. Also, what is recommended, or at least one of the
recommendations, is as I stated before, to upgrade your current NT 4.0 PDC
to W2K, which will also install AD during the upgrade process and keep all
user accounts and such intact. You then go from there.

I will offer this from my reading doing a dcpromo will indeed install AD
but... will not go native 2k. W2k assumes you are running a mixed network
anyway. I also read that upgrading an existing NT4 machine was best done by
blowing off NT and reloading from scratch W2k. MS recommends after setting
up a W2k BDS on an existing NT4 network you shutdown the PDS (NT4 machine)
and allow the W2k to work as a PDS. You should have a couple of days to
test out the waters before committing to this. If it all crashes turn on
the PDS allow the BDS to update the PDS then shutdown the BDS. You will be
back to a NT net. Good luck though. I never tried it I just took every
thing off line brought up the new PDS (W2k) and brought up the rest of the
network.

RE: Power User Rights

2001-09-26 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

Have you implemented Group Policy? Remember that domain policy ALWAYS
overrides local settings or local policy. Sound like you just need to go
through the GPO and I thought I remember there being a setting for Power
Users. Can't recall off the top of my head, as I haven't memorized it or

I need to give some laptop users in my organization Power User
privileges on their PC's so that they are able to install applications
and such. I added them to the Power User group locally, but as soon as
they login to the domain, they lose all of their privileges. Anyone
have any ideas what I have to do on the server to give them this right
without giving them full administrative privileges? I am having trouble
figuring out where to give them rights - in group membership, group
policy, file system?

RE: Upgrading domain....how?

2001-09-26 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

You need to figure out if you want an NT 4.0 domain, or an Active Directory
structure. If you want and NT 4.0 domain, then there is absolutely nothing
that you can do with W2K except have it as member servers. If you want AD,
then you need to upgrade your PDC to W2K. As Richard says, there is nothing
that would prevent you from simply reinstalling NT on a W2K server,
promoting it to the PDC, then upgrading it to W2K. That will automatically
install Active Directory for you and will migrate all the users, etc. into
the Active Directory database. Mind you, they will in no way be organized
into OU's or anything like that. But you don't want to simply run DCPROMO
on the W2K servers before you upgrade your PDC to W2K. That would be bad.
There are a ton of whitepapers around about AD and upgrade strategies and
such. My suggestion would be to read some more of them. There are a lot
more things to take into consideration than just wanting to have W2K DC's.
DNS, for one.

Let's see if I follow you-

You have new hardware (currently running W2K-S), and they are member
servers. You would like them to be DC's, but you don't want to go native...

Unless someone has come up with a trick, dcpromo on a W2K box will insist
on AD, etc. You can, however, upgrade an existing NT4 DC to W2K DC.

I would say blow away the W2K system partition, install NT4 as a new
BDC. After everything is backed up and appears to be running correctly,
promote it to PDC. Shut down your old PDC.

If you really want this piece of hardware to be running W2K Server, you can
then do an upgrade of the existing DC.

One place I'd check, if you were looking for a small environment, and
didn't want to spend much is http://www.tucows.com

They have mailservers ranging from shareware to thousands of $$, and some
of it even works pretty well.

If all you're looking for is SMTP/POP mail, I'd actually recommend Internet
Anywhere Mail server. Heck, unlimited mailbox version is only $399 or so.

Yes, go through setup
but only install the admin option, then serivce pack it (yes, the client pc) to
the same level as the server

Assuming of course
you're talking XCH 5.5 and an NT / 2000 workstation (doubt you can do it from a

Basically my laptop users travel to offices which do not all use DHCP hence
require manual IP change. I am able to use netsh to change the IP but this
requires admin rights which I do not want to do.

RE: OT? perspective of events

2001-09-12 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

I don't know how I feel about stuff like that yet. I think some of it may
be warranted (we already know that any phone conversation basically can be
recorded based on a myriad of words that are said). I think that the same
type of thing monitoring e-mail would not be noticed by most. I think
though, that if we were all told the extent of "spying" that the FBI already
does, legally or illegally, we probably would be shocked. I almost think
that things like that are better off kept silent. "what the people don't
know won't hurt them" type of attitude. It's gonna get really interesting
for a while here. As someone else said, we are in for a bit of a bumpy
ride.

As a side note, although I was not directly affected by the horrible acts
that took place yesterday (no relatives), we will all be affected by this
dastardly deed for a long time to come. My heart goes out to those who have
experienced a loss. Even today, I still am in shock at what happened. At
the same time, let us pray that our leaders make informed and wise decisions
in the aftermath of what has happened.

My sympathies and thoughts go out to everyone directly affected by these
cowardly acts. My thoughts also go out to the millions of us indirectly
affected.

Now to bring a slightly on-topic slant to the discussions - in recent months
there has been considerable debate on Carnivore (the FBI's electronic
snooping tool). In order to increase our security, I'm sure we Americans
are going to have to give up some of our personal freedom and privacy. As
IT pro's, has anyone's opinion of Carnivore changed? I know if someone had
asked me the question on Monday, I was adamantly against Carnivore. Today,
I'm willing to accept some software "black-box" scanning my email looking
for suspicious activity.

Thoughts?

BTW - just because I am initiating a slightly on topic discussion, in no way
am I suggesting that that the other threads stop. I'm all for them. Many

discussions - learn to use the delete key or setup a filter or rule.

Subject: URGENT!!! KVM Recommendations needed

Need recommendations for KVM switch, 6 to 8 port, something that
doesn't flounder looking for mice/keyboards, extensible(if possible)
with CAT5 or over IP.

Have up to $1000 US to spend on this, but am in emergency mode trying
to find the best solution.

Usually would look around a lot and test stuff, but have a wild hair
happening over here.

Any advice would be very very appreciated.

Thanks!

RE: OUTLOOK RULE

2001-09-06 Thread Benjamin Winzenz
Title: RE: OUTLOOK RULE

Sorry for
the late reply on this – I was on a plane back to the US.  Here is how you subscribe a PF to the
list.

 Create
Public Folder – name it whatever you want.  Generally, I name mine based on the content. (ie the
one for this list is called NT Sysadmin)
 Make
sure that it has a valid smtp address and make sure that you set
permissions on the folder so that you can contribute messages – has to
 have “create items” ticked.
 Subscribe
that e-mail address to this list – set it with the Receive all mail option
 (pretty much the normal settings)
 Make
sure that you have “send as” rights to the Public Folder so that you can
 respond to the confirmation e-mail.
 Set your
personal account to “nomail” option – this lets you respond to messages
sent to the list with your account, while they are delivered to the PF.
 Done.  Wasn’t that easy?

better off subscribing a Public Folder to this discussion list.
Here is what I do.  Subscribe a Public Folder to this

Hi,
I have a very basic problem. It may be very simple But I am missing
some thing. When I want to add second controller in a domain I get the
error message that "Assess denied You have no permission to change
account of the "compuername$". A dialog box of new user name and
password is opened. I tried all possible accounts but without success. I
am tha local and domain administrator of these machines and domain.
Just for test purpose I tried to add the same server as sub/child
domain, and it was successful.
But when I tried to remove that sub domain I get reply "Active Directory

changes made locally. The DSA operation is unable to proceed because DNS

Any Help

RE: Dell servers vs. Compaq

2001-08-30 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

I don't know if you will get exact comparisons as their models are slightly
different. If you are researching this, it may pay off to check both
websites and compare models that you feel are similar. I do know that I
have worked with both Compaq and Dell and have liked both. I have about 10
Dell servers that in the almost 2 years we have had them, I have had 1 hard
drive fail - that is it. We have 1 Compaq server that just quietly humms
along never complaining about anything.

I didnt do the cost comparison personally, but one of our people said it's
about half.We currently have a total of about 120 servers, but a lot of
them are getting pretty old and we are going to budget to replace them as
part of the Win2k conversion.I still have to do an evaluation per
server according to how many users it serves to set a size and cost for
each.

Just out of curiosity, what is the price difference between Dell and Compaq

The company has 100% Compaq servers. Now there is a
requirement to do a comparison between Compaq and Dell, probably because of
the cost difference. What experiences have you had with Dell -
reliability, support, upgrades etc?Anyone running them both in the same
network? I'm all familiar with Insight Manager etc and we even have a few
of the remote insight boards installed.Does Dell have equivalents?
How about doing things like firmware upgrades?

Thanks in advance for your time and help on this. If you have any docs
you want to send me, feel free to email it directly to me.

Check with HR.  I worked for a company that got penalized for
making everyone a salaried employee - the gov't didn't like that.  At the
time, the ruling was only management could be salaried, so if you didn't manage
anyone, you had to be hourly. I've also heard that for some reason IT people
also get to be classified as salaried, but things may have changed.
Another local company also got taken to court by it's employees which were
primarily developers.  60-hour work weeks were "manadatory".

I'm salaried, but if I work over 45 hours in a week then for each hour that
I work past 45, I get half of my base rate. Example:

If I make $10,000 a year and my hourly rate is $10.00, for each hour that I
work past 45, I would get $5.00 an hour that is paid quarterly.

I really like this because I usually end up with a few thousand extra each
quarter.

What you
really want to do is check with HR and find out what your official status is
(i.e. Salaried Exempt, non-exempt, etc.)   Then ask them to explain what it means.  I would start there.  Depending on that outcome, you may or
may not be able to do anything.  Do
you have to report your hours to anyone?
Keep a record of them?
Start there.

Welcome to IT.  I've always done it, been on salary, and
that's how it is.
One way around it I've found is to take extra time off.  I've
never had an
employer upset because I worked 3 days on a server problem and
wanted to
take the next day to work from home.
Best Advice:  Don't complain about it too much.  That's

RE: Backup PDC

2001-08-23 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

No apology required - it was more an interpretation thing. In the case
that you lose all of your servers, as long as you are backing up the PDC and
storing your tapes offsite, then you ought to be better off. As for
restoring a PDC to another computer, I haven't done that or had to attempt
to do it. Logic would seem to say that as long as the new computer was set
up with the same name and PDC of the same domain, it should work just fine
to restore it from a tape. But since I haven't ever done it, I can't tell
you for sure. Are you testing procedures, and then documenting them? If
so, this would be a good time to test. Make sure that the new server is not
connected to your network when you do this so you don't screw your
production network up. I am sure that you will get more comments later on
in the day, as those folks over in the US wake up. Normally, I would be one
of them, but I am currently on a business trip in Germany.

they've all been wiped out"

which I gathered/interpreted this line to mean:

I have to draw up a plan for Disaster recovery for every server in my domain

RE: Active Directory

2001-08-21 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

You know,
you REALLY should use AD DDNS.  Your
active directory will be much happier.
If you can’t, I would start looking at DNS, as that is bound to be where
your problems are.  I wonder if the
correct entries ever made it into DNS for the first DC?  I don’t have the article handy, but here
are a LOT of entries required and if they aren’t there, you ain’t doing
JACK.  And SERIOUSLY consider using
DDNS with W2K.

RE: DHCP...

2001-08-21 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

There is some truth to that, however, I think it is only valid if you have
implemented Active Directory. If you are using DHCP on a member server in
an NT4 domain, anyone with Admin rights can install it. However, if you are
using AD, you DO have to authorize the DHCP server, But that is ONLY if the
DHCP server is running AD-integrated.

This is a pretty big stretch. I think it should say "not just anyone can
create a DHCP server on a W2K server that is a member of your domain."
Anyone could setup a DHCP server using third party software or with
another OS and cause havoc. The resource kit has a utility called
DHCPLOC that makes rouge servers a little easier to locate (or at least
identify.)

I’ve used

You can

Are all the NIC's the same brand and type? Otherwise, you are going to have
problems teaming them. (Duh). Also, as was suggested earlier, you will want
to disable those NIC's until you can team them. Fortunately, it is really
easy to do in W2K. Don't even have to reboot.

It’s still
based on the driver though.  I’ve
used this with Intel and Compaq NIC’s successfully.  With the Compaq NIC’s, you have to load the Compaq
Load-balancing driver (or similar).
The Intel’s on my Dell servers support it as soon as they are
installed.  It’s quite nice
actually.  If you have Cisco
switches, you can also configure most of them for FastEtherChannel, so the throughput
is increased both in and out.

Do it.  I don't
think you will regret it.  Either
that, or find a DSL provider that doesn't use PPPoE (could be harder than you
think).  Although some have
mentioned that the Linksys routers suck, we have quite a few people that I work

For me it is not the resolution of my monitor, but the refresh rate
that causes problems. With regard to florescent lights especially, you want to
be sure that your refresh rate is as far off from 60Hz as is possible.
Florescent lights flicker at 60Hz and the interaction between a monitor
flickering at the same refresh rate and the lighting creates a worse
effect that either flicker alone. I avoid using florescent lighting
when possible, but if not I won't run a refresh rate lower that 85Hz if I can
help it.

I like the idea of anti-glare glasses though. I am assuming
that these are polarized lenses, which should cut down on the amount that
ambient florescent lighting you see reflected back at you from the
monitor.

In that case, Partition Magic should be able to do what he needs. It
will/can resize the partition and let him create a new one. A lot depends

Lexmark has a color printer that I was amazed with (I don't remember the
model). It used solid color wax bars, kind of like big crayons, rather than
ink. The depth of the color print was better than I'd ever seen in a printer
that size, which is about twice the size of an HP LJ2100. I believe the cost
hovered just over $2000.

saying that the connection with webmaster was lost. I don't know how it can
lose connection with itself. I am trying to figure this thing out. I think
it has a lot to do with my isp. I use Winpoet to connect. It shuts off now
and then without notice. The net card that goes to the DSL modem gets its
static ip and dns info from the isp. So if the winpoet connection goes then
maybe that is the culprit. This does not help my web applications.

RE: Strange Win2k Site access - WIERD!

2001-08-13 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

I will
second that.  I was having strange
problems on my W2K IIS server at home also with the services just stopping for
seemingly no reason.  I went ahead and
applied the patch and it hasn’t done it since.

How
are you connected to the Internet?  Cable modem and cable router?  MS
Internet sharing?  Are your DNS entries set up properly on each
machine?  What service pack and security fixes do you have on the machine
that IIS keeps stopping on?

I have
sharing enabled on my win2k server that allows my other machines to
connect to the net. One wierd thing is tht IIS shuts itself off at
will! Another wired thing is that I can't get files over
AIM or ICQ from people. And the most frustrating is that some websites I
can't get to and one that I need is this link.
http://www.activestate.com/Products/ActivePerl/Download.html
I can't  get perl for nt becasue for some reason I can't  connect to
that
site even though all my freinds can??

ANyone have aclue what could be the issue???
