Do you mean upgrading the virtual hardware? No, not until all servers
in the cluster are at the same version. Else the VMs would be limited
as to which ESX(i) host they could run on.

Greetings!

Why is it that on some VMWare VM’s, VMTools will not install? I can find no
errors nor any consistency.

Locally, we are currently running ESX 3.5. I see the failure for VMTools to
install on some Windows 2003 machines. On others, created at about the same
time (within a day or two), VMTools installs on them quickly with no issues.

Several weeks back, I created my first Windows 2008 server on an ESX 4.1
system. In vCenter, I gave the command to install VMTools. Only recently did
I log back into that particular VMWare environment. I happened to check on the
server I had created. In vCenter, “Summary, it shows that VMTools were not
installed.

In vCenter, clicking that VM, then “Guest, I see I have only the option to
cancel the installation. (Likewise on the ESX 3.5 VM’s on which VMTools would
not install.)

Again, anybody know why VMTools simply will not install on some VM’s?

RE: VMWare tools

2012-02-24 Thread Garcia-Moran, Carlos
I've yet to find an issue installing tools on any server, Ubuntu, Windows
(NT,2000,2003,2008) that being said, sometimes servers like Terminal Servers
might have an issue timing out unless you switch modes on them.

For the most part I always open up a direct console onto the servers log on and
then fire up the tools install so I can see what's going on, most are done
within 5-10 minutes. Have you looked into the Event logs on the server? Maybe
an Autorun issue? On the ones that failed have you tried a mount CD and then do
the tools manually (next,next,finish)?

We're on v4.1, and I always have to manually install the tools thru vcenter.
It's not a big deal to me since I don't create that many servers.
And on that note, I am so glad we finally got a virtual solution in place.
Instead of the get quote for a new server, order it, set it up now it's Okay,
give me an hour or two and I'll have it up and running.

are done within 5-10 minutes. Have you looked into the Event logs on the
server? Maybe an Autorun issue? On the ones that failed have you tried a
mount CD and then do the tools manually (next, next, finish)?

 no errors nor any consistency.

Locally, we are currently running ESX 3.5. I see the failure for VMTools
to install on some Windows 2003 machines. On others, created at about the
same time (within a day or two), VMTools installs on them quickly with no
 issues.

Several weeks back, I created my first Windows 2008 server on an ESX 4.1
system. In vCenter, I gave the command to install VMTools. Only recently
did I log back into that particular VMWare environment. I happened to
check on the server I had created. In vCenter, “Summary”, it shows that
 VMTools were not installed.

 ** **

In vCenter, clicking that VM, then “Guest”, I see I have only the option
to cancel the installation. (Likewise on the ESX 3.5 VM’s on which VMTools
 would not install.)

Again, anybody know why VMTools simply will not install on some VM’s?

RE: VMWare tools

2012-02-24 Thread Garcia-Moran, Carlos
Start the VM tools install as normal, all that does is mount the CD through
Virtualcenter and Auto fires the Setup.exe if It can.

So instead to do a manual, start the install process so it mounts the CD then
RDP to the machine and then run setup.exe yourself, pretty much a
next,next,finish install

Thanks!

On the one hand, I had finally figured this out (that is, the installer simply
mounts a DVD installer image).

Things were going well (and I had chosen the installer for the 64-bit version),
when it failed with a kernel driver error (vmrawdsk)...

Two of us checking it out now, but...

Can't you just mount the CD and do the install from RDP? It might work without
a console connection - you could try the /admin RDP switch as well.

RE: VMWare tools

OK - the guy on-site gave the VM its 4-5 reboot of the day. It got installed
now. Thanks again!

Thanks!

On the one hand, I had finally figured this out (that is, the installer simply
mounts a DVD installer image).

Things were going well (and I had chosen the installer for the 64-bit version),
when it failed with a kernel driver error (vmrawdsk)...

Two of us checking it out now, but...

Thank you, List!

Can't you just mount the CD and do the install from RDP? It might work without
a console connection - you could try the /admin RDP switch as well.

The ESXi system hosting this is a half-continent away, so opening a direct

For the most part I always open up a direct console onto the servers log on and

Greetings!

Why is it that on some VMWare VM's, VMTools will not install? I can find no
errors nor any consistency.

Locally, we are currently running ESX 3.5. I see the failure for VMTools to
install on some Windows 2003 machines. On others, created at about the same
time (within a day or two), VMTools installs on them quickly with no issues.

Several weeks back, I created my first Windows 2008 server on an ESX 4.1
system. In vCenter, I gave the command to install VMTools. Only recently did
I log back into that particular VMWare environment. I happened to check on the
server I had created. In vCenter, Summary, it shows that VMTools were not
installed.

In vCenter, clicking that VM, then Guest, I see I have only the option to
cancel the installation. (Likewise on the ESX 3.5 VM's on which VMTools would
not install.)

Again, anybody know why VMTools simply will not install on some VM's?

There is a setting to update vmtools on reboot. We used to have that
enabled until vmware had a bug or two that allowed anyone to initate an
update (causing weird outages on some servers). Since then we disable that
until we do a back end upgrade. Then just run a script to enable it when
we do server patching and disable it again afterwards.

VMWare tools

2009-09-30 Thread Bill Songstad
I've been using ESXi 3.5 for about six months and I have run up on a need
that is not covered in the free hypervisor. So, as any industrious sole
might, I went to the VMware website to see what products might suit my
needs. And Viola! There I discovered that the marketing folks at VMware are
sadists probably hired from the microsoft licensing team.

So what I am polling about here is this: What are the essential tools for
managing VMware virtual servers?

What I need is pretty simple. I just want to make backups of my servers
that I can restore to a different host without shutting them down or at the
very least by a script that I can run on Saturday nights. I don't
necessarily need to have vmotion especially since the products that include
it are more than my total server hardware budget.

Are there less expensive tools from other publishers that I should check
out? The VMware stuff is a little outside my budget as far as I can divine
from their website.

Any advice is appreciated,

Bill

What I need is pretty simple. I just want to make backups of my servers
that I can restore to a different host without shutting them down or at
the very least by a script that I can run on Saturday nights. I don't
necessarily need to have vmotion especially since the products that
include it are more than my total server hardware budget.

Are there less expensive tools from other publishers that I should check
out? The VMware stuff is a little outside my budget as far as I can
divine from their website.

Any advice is appreciated,

Bill

You can use VCB or third party backup solution such as vRanger. The key is
what are your backup needs and budget. VCB works in conjuction with third
party products to do full VMDK and file level backups. The key is if you
need your VM nees quiesed before snapshot. I believe VCB alone may not do
this. Plus with VCB alone you will have to setup backup scripts manually.
The best solution if your budget allows is a third party solution installed
on a backup proxy.

marketing folks at VMware are sadists probably hired from the
 microsoft licensing team.

So what I am polling about here is this: What are the essential tools

 for managing VMware virtual servers?

What I need is pretty simple. I just want to make backups of my
servers that I can restore to a different host without shutting them
 down or at
the
very least by a script that I can run on Saturday nights. I don't
necessarily need to have vmotion especially since the products that
include
it are more than my total server hardware budget.

Are there less expensive tools from other publishers that I should
check out? The VMware stuff is a little outside my budget as far as I

 can
divine
 from their website.

 Any advice is appreciated,

 Bill

That's fine if you have a small number to backup. The problem begins when
you have a large number of VM's to backup. When you have agents installed
in your VM's then the processing overhead can significantly affect the
performance of your ESX host. With backup proxy the backup processing is
done on the backup proxy instead of ESX host.

I was using regular client backups as well, but a recent MotherBoard failure
on my ESX host left me high and dry for 36 hours because rebuilding 4
servers and reinstalling them only to back them up and restore them back to
the original host was going to be a pretty big hassle not to mention having
a full day of email and SQL logs out of sync with the most current backup
set. So I figured that if I had some host based backup solution, I could be
back online in a couple of hours instead of 16. (no reinstalling, no
patching and then restoring from backup) On paper, VMs are great, see,
I can rebuild a server in a fraction of the time of a PM, but now I have to
rebuild all of my servers in a 4x fraction.

I'm curious about real life experience with these live snapshot backups. Do
they boot up and behave properly when they are running live databases like
Exchange and SQL?

Just to reiterate. It is *not* necessary to use VCB with all 3rd party
backup products for VMWare. Veeam and vRanger both have the option to
do network backups.

The benefit of VCB is that your proxy is hooked straight into the LUNs
and there are almost no resources used on the ESX hosts. As others have
mentioned, the problem comes in when backing up databases such as SQL
and Exchange. You have to quiesce the OS and databases somehow or all
you'll get are 'crash-consistent' backups that may or may not be useful.

I'm using vRanger 3.X + VCB and freezing the databases with the VSS
support builtin to the ESX 3.5 U4 VMWare tools. With vRanger you have to
be very careful with how to set this up, and I received excellent
guidance from their support team.

So far I've restored a couple of VMs with SQL databases and everything's
been fine.

Yes, as long as the script stops those services during the snapshot.
(Only needed for a minute or 2). The OS will act as if the plug got
yanked (Just as with most backup/restore processes), but the databases
will be a safe, consistent state.

I have written the scripts, tested, but don't use VCB/quiesce on
production SQL/Exchange servers. I just use VCB with flat servers, if
you will. I then RSYSNC the files to a remote datacenter afterwards.
Kinda like a homebrew VMotion.

here's what I do, all with the free version.

I have a couple scenarios. Some vm's have disc's setup as RDM's from ZFS backed
iSCSI targets, some vm's exist on ZFS backed NFS mounted vmfs stores. Doesn't
matter...

I script the proper shutdown of the vm, check that its off, then trigger a snap
on the backend storage, then restart. You can do all of this through the perl
rCLI or whatever the hell they call it now.

If all your vmfs is/are local, you can still do everything but the snap, just
code up a vmkfstools export to a remote server and wait:)

No matter what these products that do warm backups say, your backup resembles
pulling the cord out of the wall and imaging a physical server. Just because
the newer ones use VSS etc, it doesn't mean every aspect fo the server behaves
correctly when a quiesce is issued. I don't like this idea, and have never
subscribed to it.

Re: VMWare tools

2009-09-30 Thread Richard Stovall
I apologize if I caused some confusion. I suppose I forgot that the
OP was asking about backup solutions for ESXi (presumably the free
version). My responses were all about ESX, and it seems that Veeam
for one, *used* to backup the free version of ESXi, but doesn't any
longer at the behest of VMWare, though they still support the for-pay
version. (Pretty lame IMHO, though I understand the reasoning.)
http://www.veeam.com/news/veeam-software-offers-new-essentials-bundle-acceleration-kits-for-vmware-vsphere4.html

With regard to vRanger 3.X, I don't see on their site where they
differentiate between ESXi versions (thought it wouldn't surprise me
to discover that they're under the same thumb screws from VMWare as
Veeam). If you've got a valid trial key they will support you 100%,
so I suggest giving them a call. If you don't get the answers you
need contact me off list and I'll see if I can get some answers for
you.

I checked out vranger 3.3 and it requires vcb, none of my machines are
available for backup w/o it. I tested this by doing a new install, if I put
in the free license key vranger wont work, if I unregister it back to the 60
day trial which has VCB it works just fine.

So far I've restored a couple of VMs with SQL databases and everything's
 been fine.

Yes, all third party products use VCB, however, VCB by itself is a
 little
more difficult to setup. The third party product eliminates having to do
 all of the custom scripting.

vRanger uses VCB.  IIRC, all third party backup solutions for VM's
 require
 VCB.

You can use VCB or third party backup solution such as vRanger. The

what are your backup needs and budget. VCB works in conjuction with
 third

 you
need your VM nees quiesed before snapshot. I believe VCB alone may not
 do
this. Plus with VCB alone you will have to setup backup scripts
 manually.
The best solution if your budget allows is a third party solution
 installed
 on a backup proxy.

I've been using ESXi 3.5 for about six months and I have run up on a
 need
that is not covered in the free hypervisor.  So, as any industrious
 sole
might, I went to the VMware website to see what products might suit my
needs. And Viola!  There I discovered that the marketing folks at
 VMware
 are
sadists probably hired from the microsoft licensing team.

So what I am polling about here is this:  What are the essential tools
 for
 managing VMware virtual servers?

What I need is pretty simple.  I just want to make backups of my
 servers
that I can restore to a different host without shutting them down or
 at
 the
very least by a script that I can run on Saturday nights.  I don't
necessarily need to have vmotion especially since the products that
 include
it are more than my total server hardware budget.

Are there less expensive tools from other publishers that I should
 check
out?  The VMware stuff is a little outside my budget as far as I can
 divine
 from their website.

 Any advice is appreciated,

 Bill
