Re: [nysbirds-l] White-faced Ibis present now (JBWR)
An update for those thinking of twitching the WFIB (White-faced Ibis), The bird just flew out from the East Pond, over Crossbay seemingly heading towards the south marsh. Other highlights included 2 Royal Terns that just flew over the south end of the East Pond heading north east. Unfortunately, right after I tried to get a few birders back to the pond, it flew over the phragmites towards the railway tracks with a handful of Glossy Ibis' Glossy Ibis are moving back and forth between the railway and the pond so it very likely could make its way back in but it could take a while or never return. [nysbirds-l] Big Egg Marsh Shorebirds...
I did a shorebird survey this morning at Big Egg Marsh in Queens starting just after high tide around 6:55 AM. I spent about 2 and 1/2 hours and recorded 11 species of shorebirds. The tide was not as high as I would have liked and that meant birds were on the peripheral of the marsh making viewing somewhat challenging. Based on flock flights, I estimated around 600 shorebirds in total. The highlights were several hundred Red Knots, with many of them in very nice breeding plumage. I tweeted a short video clip which could be viewed here https://twitter.com/birdingdude/status/727909582610247680 showing some of the Red Knots. Non Shorebirding highlights included a couple of Clapper Rails and an Ammodramus sp. which I never got a good handle on for an ID. I ran into Isaac Grant while leaving and give him an update on what I saw. Lucky dude to get Curlew Sand later which obviously would have topped the Red Knots. Cheers, "I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence." ~ Frederick Douglass 風 Swift as the wind 林 Quiet as the forest 火 Conquer like the fire 山 Steady as the mountain Sun Tzu The Art of War > (__/) > (= '.'=) > (") _ (") > Sent from somewhere in the field using my mobile device! [nysbirds-l] Brooklyn and Queens highlights
Like a few other birders, I decided it was the kind of weather for Gulling which started at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. Sean Sime's earlier report pretty much covered the highlights there, save for 11 Bonaparte's Gulls which I happened upon at the boat launch. Unfortunately, just as quickly as I spotted them, they took off after a Coast Guard (?) cutter flushed them from the exposed flats. Leaving Floyd, I headed over to Riis Park. A scan of the parking lot did not turn up much of a loafing gull flock. Scoping from the beach did not have much returns either. If you have not visited the area recently, please note that the area which some of us used for seawatching while staying out of the rain and wind is now fenced off with no access at the moment. Skipping Fort Tilden, I hurried over to Breezy Point where I decided to try and get in a Piping Plover survey since there was a break in the rain. In total, I documented 11 Piping Plovers with 10 birds apparently paired up. I spent some time observing their behavior and noted some nest scraping as well as territorial display. Other highlights from Breezy included: Common Raven, heard and observed in the median. It was heading towards the ocean but then doubled back and headed towards Coney Island. The Sanderling numbers seem to be holding steady and I had my first flagged Sanderling of the year which I managed to document. A few banded American Oystercatchers were also documented. One with the code U2. The Northern Gannet show continued with several hundred but nowhere near the numbers from a few weeks ago. Otherwise the ocean was quiet and there was none of the Scoter spectacle from a few weeks ago. Despite the good numbers of Bonaparte's Gulls being reported from Staten Island, I only had 2 in the 3 hours I spent at Breezy Tip. Leaving Breezy, I checked in at the Fort Tilden fisherman's lot and did a seawatch which was uneventful. Good numbers of Gannets but nothing else noteworthy. Leaving Fort Tilden, I again covered the Riis Parking lot and this time had a good number of gulls in the parking lot. However, they were all the usuals. Another seawatch from Riis beach did not turn up anything of note. I decided to wrap up the day at Gravesend in Brooklyn, thinking that maybe some of the Bonaparte's action might have drifted into that area. Unfortunately, that was not the case; nevertheless, I did enjoy nice looks at Gannets. Not a bad day of birding despite the weather. Now, if I could only master a transportation Jitsu it would be much easier getting around :-) Cheers, "I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence." ~ Frederick Douglass 風 Swift as the wind 林 Quiet as the forest 火 Conquer like the fire 山 Steady as the mountain Sun Tzu The Art of War > (__/) > (= '.'=) > (") _ (") > Sent from somewhere in the field using my mobile device! [nysbirds-l] Queens co. Riis Park Sparrow Corner...
I wanted to post a follow up regarding the Riis Park issue I mentioned last week. We have gotten the attention needed from NPS management and were given assurances that the area referred to as "Sparrow Corner" which was damaged will be restored and noted as a sensitive area. Many thanks to all who reached out and helped especially Rich Kelly, Gail Benson and Patricia Lindsay. Your actions helped greatly and very likely saved that area from further demise. [nysbirds-l] Weekend Roundup...
Those of you who know the area near the handballs courts at Riis Park in Queens might be dismayed to know that NPS is out there tinkering in the area. I don't have a handle yet (working on it) on what they are doing but yesterday,I was dismayed to see a small section of the dunes which had a nice cover of beach grass had been leveled. If you are shrugging your shoulders, then this may get your attention. This is the area that in the past served as a good migrant trap. Western Kingbirds have been found there and not too long ago Patricia Lindsay pulled out a Henslow's Sparrow. On that same day, an American Bittern was flushed from exactly the same area that is now leveled. These are just a few of the good birds seen there. The dunes and beach grass had survived Hurricane Sandy so I have no idea the reason behind this effort. I shudder to think it might be some sort of "restoration effort." And now for the birds - Yesterday's coastal birding in Queens saw an increase in American Oystercatchers (many at Breezy, Fort Tilden and Riis Park), and the arrival of Piping Plovers (3). The latter all seen at Breezy Point. Additionally, a lone Osprey was sighted coming off the Ocean heading over the Breezy Point 4 wheel drive access road. Continuing from last week, the spectacular flight/massing of Scoters and Gannets continued off Breezy Point Tip. Following the fish which must be really good, Gannets in the hundreds were fishing on the bayside instead of out on the Ocean. I am not surprised at Rob and Heydi seeing them from Deadhorse Bay. The Gannets were close enough to hear their calls and the noise as they hit the water. Based on reports from Long Island today, it appears that some of these birds might have ended up in places like Jones Beach. Despite spending most of my day on the coast, it was not until Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge that I ran into a lone Laughing Gull. Seen on the south end of the east pond. From the overlook, I scanned the pond and picked up many of the usuals including 2 continuing Canvasbacks. A Bald Eagle put in a surprise (?) appearance and caused the waterfowl to reshuffle. While sifting through the reshuffled waterfowl, I came across a flock of Green-winged Teals. Within the flock, I found a drake Eurasian x American Green-winged Teal. It was too far away for any decent Digiscope shots but the vertical and horizontal stripes were very evident. Views of this bird was shared with Bob Hayes and a photographer (Dan). Today, I covered several spots working on a few locations where I have been trying to carefully document the turnover. Several sites saw an increase in American Oystercatchers, especially in the Rockaways but nothing else of note. No other Piping Plovers were recorded along the beach despite covering several known PIPL nesting sites. The only birds seen today that I considered new arrivals were two Golden-crowned Kinglets, which were heard and seen early this morning at Idlewild Preserve. If anyone knows what might be taking place at Riis Park requiring the leveling of dune habitat, please contact me offline. I will be writing to NPS, to find out what is going on.
[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay West Pond Update...
I don't think this made it to the list serve. Please see below an update on the efforts to restore the West Pond and surrounding environs at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Gateway Announces Public Availability of Finding of No Significant Impact For Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge West Pond Trail Breach Repair Superintendent Jennifer Nersesian announced today the next step toward completing the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge West Pond Trail Breach Repair: a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Preferred Alternative has been signed by the NPS Northeast Regional Director and is now available online at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/documentsList.cfm?projectID=44691. The NPS has selected Alternative B: Repair the Breach and Improve Habitat Conditions, the NPS Preferred Alternative, for implementation, which includes repairing the embankment at the breach and installing a water control structure and a groundwater well. The FONSI explains why this action will have no significant effects on the human environment, based on the analysis in the environmental assessment (EA) as well as the comments received from the public and agencies during the public review period, which concluded November 6, 2015. One small design refinement to the planned breach repair was made since the issuance of the EA and is described in the FONSI, but the impacts to the environment will be the same or fewer than those described in the EA. An updated version of the EA with very minor changes, including a more descriptive title and the design refinement, is also available online at the address above; these changes are itemized in the errata attached to the FONSI. The purpose of the project is to plan for environmentally sensitive and resilient conditions along the West Pond loop trail that support a diversity of Jamaica Bay habitats, wildlife, and enhanced visitor experiences. Repairing the primary breach in West Pond and installing a freshwater source through a groundwater well will allow the NPS to return West Pond to more freshwater conditions and provide a diversity of habitats for wildlife, unusual in an urban area. --NPS— Daphne Yun Acting Public Affairs Officer Gateway National Recreation Area 風 Swift as the wind 林 Quiet as the forest 火 Conquer like the fire 山 Steady as the mountain Sun Tzu The Art of War > (\__/) > (= '.'=) > (") _ (") > Sent from somewhere in the field using my mobile device! The bird was flushed again by an off leashed dog. It flew into the lake and is still there as of this moment near the north end. 風 Swift as the wind 林 Quiet as the forest 火 Conquer like the fire 山 Steady as the mountain Sun Tzu The Art of War > (\__/) > (= '.'=) > (") _ (") > Sent from somewhere in the field using my mobile device! [nysbirds-l] Montauk LI
Highlights from a full day of birding out east in Montauk Long Island with Tom Burke and Gail Benson. Starting at the point with an early morning seawatch. Many Razorbills were present providing nice views both sitting and in flight. All 3 Scoter species were present in the thousands. Decent number of Bonaparte Gulls were seen early but thinned quickly out as the morning wore on. Northern Gannets were quite sparse and between Tom, Gail and myself, we might have seen a grand total of "4" over an hour of sea watching. As far as land birds, there was a movement of American Robins, sprinkled with Redwing Blackbirds in the area. Earlier, I had put in a search for the previously reported Yellow-breasted Chat with no luck but did coax out of the dense undergrowth 4 Eastern Towhees. After receiving a report from Ken and Sue Feustel about the Thick-billed Murre. Tom, Gail and I put in a search along with Shai Mitra, Pat Lindsay, Phil and Holly Cambhi to no avail. After giving the Murre chase a break, 3 of us birded the bluff at Camp Hero where after a long search, we picked up the continuing drake King Eider. Our Eider search was interrupted by a message from the Feustels who saved us "the blushes" by re-finding the Murre near the East Side jetty of Montauk inlet. After enjoying views of the Thick-billed Murre we went back to Camp Hero where after a long search, we finally got views of the drake King Eider. This bird was very difficult to pick out in the surf and distance. A search for Red-necked Grebe did not pan out despite covering several areas. Nevertheless, we did manage to pick up 1 adult and 1 sub adult Iceland Gulls both seen near the inlet. Another look at the inlet in the afternoon provided nice looks at the Thick-billed Murre which we enjoyed with Gary Strauss. The Murre, was being eyed by a few Great Black-backed Gulls. No doubt, thinking about adding a tick to "their rare bird kill list." A stop at Napeague was not productive with no sign of Larry the Lesser Black-back or any "Owlthingie." One last note, Karlo and Alison Mirth who we ran into. Reported a dark looking Red-tailed Hawk. We kept an eye out for it but did not see anything suspicious. Birders in the Montauk area might want to keep an eye out. Thanks Phil for your comments and also posting a link to the latest contribution to the Cackling Goose discussion. As for the "Smew" well at least the NJ folks are keeping a stiff upper lip about the whole affair. It is telling that David suggests that a hybrid cannot be ruled out. 風 Swift as the wind 林 Quiet as the forest 火 Conquer like the fire 山 Steady as the mountain Sun Tzu The Art of War > (\__/) > (= '.'=) > (") _ (") > Sent from somewhere in the field using my mobile device! Re:[nysbirds-l] Central Park Goose. An Experts Opinion
Ken is right about "Lesser Canada" which is what I alluded to in my earlier response. The question for me then is, what does B.Hutchinsii "variant" really mean? Conservative approach to something none of us could really put a label on? I see Geese like this at many locations throughout our area and at no time at all am I considering Cackling subspecies. Perhaps, I need to rethink that. I imagine eBird reviewers will have their work cut out for them with this one going forward. Personally, I would not call this a Cackling Goose subspecies b.hutchinnsi. But then, I am no expert on these matters ;-) Cheers, 風 Swift as the wind 林 Quiet as the forest 火 Conquer like the fire 山 Steady as the mountain Sun Tzu The Art of War > (__/) > (= '.'=) > (") _ (") > Sent from somewhere in the field using my mobile device! Re: [nysbirds-l] Central Park Goose
Hi Peter, Good eye in picking this out at Central Park and thanks for posting a link to your photos. After looking at the images, I feel your bird does not have the features for the expected Richardson's Cackling and I suspect that it is also not a a fit for *Taverneri (the largest of the Cackling subspecies) *which would require a more steeper culmen slope*. *As far as a Lesser Canada, this is even harder to ascertain. A bird like this, I either catalog as a "Lesser Canada Type" or a runt "Branta Canadensis." The White-cheeked complex I find even tougher than Shorebirds or Gulls. I recently went through an exercise with a larger than average Cackling type species of Goose. I was really sure that I had finally set my eyes on a possible Taverneri but after research and consultation, I finally conceded that the subject was probably a "Richardson's Cackling" Goose; albeit one of the larger ones I have seen. These birds have not been seen in awhile so I wanted to get the word out that they are still here. This afternoon, I had the two drake Eurasian Wigeons on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. They were seen towards the north end while looking from Big John's Overlook. They tend to get lost easily, especially at that distance so patience is necessary as they often disappeared into the many coves along that end of the pond. [nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeons @ Jamaica Bay East Pond Queens County
Wrapping up a January 1st 2016 day of birding, I decided I would leave some juice in the tank for tomorrow's Southern Nassau CBC and so spent the late afternoon sifting through the multitude of waterfowl on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay. While I could not turn any of the two Scaup species into something rarer, I did manage to see two drake Eurasian Wigeons. The two Cackling Geese continue at Flushing Meadow Corona Park in Queens. They were observed feeding near the golf course, which is north east from where the Lark and Clay-colored Sparrows have been frequenting. Also noted were the continuing 3 Pine Warblers. As noted in previous posts these birds are mostly seen in the vicinity of the "Garden of Meditation." [nysbirds-l] Eurasian Wigeons @ Jamaica Bay East Pond Queens County
Very likely the continuing birds--although, (I think) only one was being reported as of late. Lisa Scheppke, was able to get on one when she joined me later scoping from the overlook. [nysbirds-l] Flushing Meadows-Corona Park Queens County -- Cackling Geese, Lark & Clay-colored Sparrow +
It took some effort but I finally caught up with all of the recent highlighted birds from Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. The continuing Richardson Cackling Geese were observed feeding near the lake amongst a flock of 368 Canada Geese. Following up on the reports of Lark, Clay-colored Sparrow and Pine Warbler. I went in search of the location they were seen. It turns out that while the location is indeed north of the LIE, it is instead named "Garden of Meditation." I had to put in a lengthy search for the mixed flock (mostly made up of Juncos) and I ended up finding them near the Queens Museum. In working over the flock, I found an additional 2 Pine Warblers for a total of 3. The plumages ranged from bright to intermediate males to drab female type. All three were actively moving with the Junco flock. The Sparrows were a little harder and I did not find them at first with the Junco flock that had the Pine Warblers but ran into them after tracking down a HOSP (House Sparrow) flock to see what was moving with them. Both Sparrows were with a smaller Junco flock, which I suspect were all part of the earlier flock that contained the Pine Warblers. As I watched the Lark and Clay-colored Sparrow, other Juncos flew in with the Pine Warblers. My congratulations to the CBC party or individual that found them. These are very good birds for Queens this late.
[nysbirds-l] Sooty Shearwater @ Shinnecock Inlet
I wrapped up a day of birding out on Long Island with a late afternoon seawatch at Shinnecock Inlet which was quiet save for a late Sooty Shearwater. Any December records out there? Waterfowl were non existent with only a few Common Eiders and Long-tailed Ducks out on the ocean. A good number of Gulls were off the East Jetty but they were all the expected loafers. A search along Dune Road did not turn up anything of note. Quite disappointing actually as I had visions of Sparrows popping up from the marsh. Are you getting excited about those CBCs as yet? I am and I have been scouting for a few. If you are interested in participating in the West Bronx, hit me up. I would like to deepen the bench for some areas. "The white-cheeked goose complex is complicated and is still a long way from being well understood. The potential for hybridization also further complicates matters but I think this reiterates the importance for us to look carefully and cautiously at suspect Cackling Geese and to thoroughly document these birds when the opportunity presents itself." [nysbirds-l] Riverhead LI, Ross's Goose whacked...
Big year listers, you might want to hold off on a Ross's Goose twitch. Apparently, the Riverhead Ross's Goose met its demise earlier today courtesy of a shotgun blast. I think folks on the scene were trying to put out an update to the list serves but it never came through. While the loss of any bird is tragic. The Ross's Goose is a tough one since it is not common for us. Hunters doing their thing though, so don't hate. 風 Swift as the wind 林 Quiet as the forest 火 Conquer like the fire 山 Steady as the mountain Sun Tzu The Art of War > (\__/) > (= '.'=) > (") _ (") > Sent from somewhere in the field using my mobile device! [nysbirds-l] Riverhead LI, Ross's Goose whacked...
