RE: [old-chevy-truck] Re: Over heated my engine and now it stays hot?

2008-02-21 Thread corvallis
I have never seen a water pump shaft break, but they are case-hardened so a
crack could develop. The weep hole usually tells you when the
water-resistant packing material has given up the ghost. Water pumps can be
rebuilt. You should be able to find rebuilt ones at NAPA and the like. Some
of them are engine block specific so take yours in and match it up to what
is being offered. …bill

Hi,
Yes, I put in the thermostat in. I am wondering how pumps fail.
Does the shaft break free from the impeller and so the impeller no
longer spins with the shaft? I think these pumps have weep holes
when they fail, not sure how that works either but my pump is not
leaking.

Thanks,

RE: [old-chevy-truck] Stuck Transmission

2008-06-29 Thread corvallis
I have seen the pilot shaft freeze into the inner race of a pilot bearing,
on a different make of vehicle. The solution was usually to cut into the
bell housing and torch off the pilot shaft; I was able to rock the trans
enough to break the inner bearing race and the ball bearing dribble out
allowing trans removal.

Is the pilot bearing here a ball bearing with inner and outer races, or a
bronze sleeve? .bill

Assuming that you have everything unbolted and out of the way, then its
remotely possible that the transmission input shaft splines are corroded or
extremely dirty and are making it difficult to slide the trans out of the
clutch splines. Possible maybe but not likely. How far has the trans slid
out so far? Are you making sure that the weight of the trans is not hanging
on the input shaft as you are trying to pull it out? Got all four trans to
bell bolts out? 4 speed or 3?

You do not need to pull the fork and its impossible to remove the clutch
until you get the trans out of the way.

Hey All. My 1952 Chevy Truck has the 213 engine. Oil was leaking from
the front seal. I replaced the seal and sleaved the balancer. When I
had the balancer off, I found that the balancer was not the correct one
for this engine. The belt pully was narrow on the balancer and the
water and generator pully was the larger one. I called around and got
the correct balancer. I had it sleeved also. Well, tonight when I tried
to put the new balancer on, it won't go on all the way. It stops right
where the sleeve begins to enter the seal. I recently found out that
the engine is out of a 48-49 truck and not a 1952 216. Did they change
anything on the 1952 vs 48-49 engines? I can not figure out why the
balancer refuses to move any further. Any ideas?

It is a sintered bronze bushing .

Most of the time you can work a long pry bar up in there and work the
tranny loose if you're young & strong , you'll need a helper and be
_SURE_ to screw a couple studs into the upper two tranny ears so when
that beast finally pops loose it doesn't crash down on you and
shatter your hand or break your wrist ~ no joke here .

You can rock , shake & bounce the tranny _violently_ to work it
loose , you're not going to hurt it and even if you manage to do so ,
it's junk already , cherry used ones are cheap or free .

loose until you've installed the balancer to allow the seal to center on the
shoulder of the balancer. .bill

I don't know but the reason has to be dead simple ~ look down inside
the new balancer and measure it with some calipers to see if it's got a
step or isn't as deep

I have a very, very small gas tank leak on my farm tractor. As I was
talking to the local tank repair shop he mentioned to me that gas
bought from a service station was very unstable and that in as little
as one month it breaks down into a benzene compound that "rots" your
tank. He stated that "farm gas" does not have this same stability
problem. He stated that you could buy a stabilizer that prevented the
break down. Now I certainly have heard that gas will get "bad", but
this is the first I have heard that it is corrosive enough to damage
the gas tank. Can anyone confirm or refute the 30 day time frame and
the corrosive nature? I may have to really change the way I treat my
old truck and my other infrequently used vehicles.

Thanks

RE: [old-chevy-truck] looking for parts

2008-07-30 Thread corvallis
Hi,

Let me do one piece at a time.

The parts book says the Tie Rod is in Section 6.230

1947-55 2-ton is Chevy part no. 3683223

I Googled this and parts123.com lists it, but don't exactly say they have
it.

http://www.parts123.com/index/parts123-index2041.htm

Do a search down for 3683223 (about 1/3rd of the way) and click on More
Info/Purchase.

Click on Price/Availability lookup.

That opens up an email to them. Ask them for price and availability .and
hope.

Well, we sold her motorcycle last week because she can no longer
ride it, so she had this wad of cash in her pocket burning holes. 2
days later she went out while I was @ work, & bought me a little 95
S-10 4 cyl 5 spd pickup to use as an economical runabout, for $600,
well kept looking at that, unexpected but nice.
Then, the next day I was out working in my workshop rediscovering my
workbench, she comes striding out of the house all grins and
says "Hey, I just found this 51 Chevy truck on C/L for $250!"
I'm thinking, ok, rusted out half assembled parts rig. I look at it
and the pics looked really clean, she mentions she already called
the guy and he's holding it for us. I picked it up yesterday, man oh
man did she buy me a steal of a deal! One little tiny section of
light paint bubbling in the left rear corner, NO dents/dings or rust
otherwise, all there, on a non op, with clean title, and even has a
nice spotlight on it bearing "GM" on the top little ribbed lamp ring
cap. Someone converted it to 12v and installed a 400 small block in
it. I started trying to revive the brakes yesterday, if I can get
them to pump up enough to run around the yard, it'll only take me a
couple hours to make the engine run. I am stoked! I got to looking
at the front yard yesterday evening, and all the trucks scattered
around the yard, I need to knock some of those rocks out of the way
so I can just make a big lineup of all the old Chevy's and take a
sunset pic looking out over the valley with the trucks in the
foreground, I thank that'd be a sweet picture.

Kenneth,

Thank you for the lead. I called them and they said they can put another
coat of chrome over the top of the emblems, but won't take care of any pits
or defects (sort of like putting lipstick on a pig). I'm going to pull the
emblems and put them on a polishing wheel, perhaps this will clean them up
enough.

These sound like the running boards used on cab and chassis
vehicles , like flat beds , dump trucks and the like .

They're very rare to find in good condition . work up some pix and
post a link to them (you cannot add pix in yahoo groups) and I'm
sure you'll easily re-sell them or maybe even swap for pickup runnng
boards .

there still dependable folks doing this? I'm on the West coast, so a
reliable person or shop on the west coast would be my first choice,
but I'll ship it to any respected individual or shop to get it

truck? I bought a wiring kit--But there is really no diagram that tells me
exactly where all the wires go precisly. Thru the frame thru crossbars??
Also I would like to know if anyone has an idea how to tell if my dimmer
switch is bad? I turn on the headlights-my highbeams work but my low beams
do not work? When I turn on my head lights my parking lights go out?? I am
confused-Any where I can get better info?
Thanks, Donna

It depends on what brake drums you need ~ Huck brakes (two adjusters
at tops of shoes) or Bendix brakes (one adjuster at the bottom) are
completely different .

If you have Bendix brakes , they're available pretty much anywhere as
they were used up to the 1967 model year , 6 lugs and all .

Huck brake drums , OTOH , are currently only available chinese made
and they're no good , better to find a good used one and remember to
never , _EVER_ turn your brake drums unless you have pedal pulsation .

RE: [old-chevy-truck] '48 235

2008-08-23 Thread corvallis
Well, if it is stock (unlikely) you have a 216. You may want to fine the
head casting number and the block casting number (not the VIN) by the
starter, and flash it up here. Someone could have transplanted a more modern
engine in there.

Distributor should be turning clockwise. Cylinders are numbered one thru
six, starting at the front of the truck. 1-5-3-6-2-4 is the firing order.

Plug gap is 0.040" and points gap is 0.018"

Original plugs were AC-M84 but this crosses to Autolite 3138. Some of this
will depend on the size motor you have so flash us those casting numbers.

Just remembered; I have a '48 in my 1937. .bill

can one of you old timers tell me what the timing should be set at for
my '48 2-ton truck, and the firing order, i suppose the plug and point
gap will help too, the old beast seems to be running on 2 cylinders, it
had been sitting in a barn for 20 years before i bought it, thought I'd
start with the basics before assuming there's something major wrong, i
plan on checking the compression while i have the plugs pulled
too. thanks

Ok; I was looking in my car book. You could have a 235 in a 2-ton. Plugs
then would be 0.035" and points could be 0.018 to 0.015"

Be sure you have fresh gas in there. My 1948 block runs rough but I think
some of the valve seats are rusted, carb needs a rebuild, or piston rings.

After sitting so long, the main thing I'd do is disassemble and clean
the carburetor. The basic adjustments listed is also a must. I have a
'48 COE and the fuel system was my major hurdle. After that, the 235
ran fine (assuming your 2 ton is still stock it will have a dipper 235
as folks have pointed out). Also, is it a GMC? If so, it's a 270, not
a 235.

Good luck.

RE: [old-chevy-truck] Re: Carb. tune up

2008-09-02 Thread corvallis
You might also want to check your vacuum advance, There could be a line
running from the base of the carb to the distributor. The oblong hole that
the butterfly shaft runs through can be rebushed and reamed out to fit a new
shaft. You may want to consider buying a rebuilt carb at NAPA, or such.

Life continues apace .

The rear motor mounts bolt to the bell housing and then have a
vertical bolt through them , there's supposed to be a sheet metal
spacer made of steel tubing ut it's usually gone missing .

I've never seen a '41 ~ '47.1 hood ornament , doesn't man there
wasn't one , prolly any from late 30's Chevy passenger cars with
butterfly hoods will fit easily enough .

46 truck questions

hi Nate

How's life in CA??

Regarding a 46 1/2 ton truck (as in prior emails):

a) did they have a hood ornament? if so what other years have the
same ones?

b) what bolts or plates hold on the rear motor mounts?? We have new
motor mounts
from on-line but not sure of how they attach to the frame

thanks!

Just wanted to say thanks for all of the advise! I checked the rocker

also replaced the points and rotor and cleaned the spark plugs. She

there is a slight miss from time to time. Being 38 and growing up in

Hey All, I thought I had this beaten but found out I don't. I have a
Rochester 1 bbrl carb on my 52. Earlier this year it started flooding
out so bad gas was pouring through the weep hole. Took it apart and she
was pretty nasty. Cleaned it up really good, put it back together and
it did the same thing. Took it apart again and found a little more junk
on top of the needle valve. Cleaned it up again, readjusted the float,
took the gas tank out, flushed the tank clean, replaced all of the
rubber hoses, and added a new filter system. Put it all back together,
put in new gas and transmission fluid in the gas to keep the carb
clean, drove excellent for a few days then flooded again. Each time it
floods so much that it kills the engine dead and gas pours through the
weep hole. I can't figure it out. Any thoughts on this?

The feelings on the American Motorcycle Club of America site is that modern
gasoline will dissolve all gas tank liners and some non-metallic carb
floats. I'd just put a couple fuel filters in the line just as it comes out

Bill in Oregon may have a point that needs considering. I'm assuming that he
is talking about "modern fuels" as in the recent (recent in our terms)
addition of ethanol to the mix. Maybe we'll hear from someone who has seen a
liner failure that was supposedly/allegedly caused by the gasoline blend. In
my particular area, we have just started with a 10 percent maximum allowable
fuel mix in the regular pump gas. At least they are just starting to label
the pumps anyway to inform that the fuels may contain a max of 10 percent
ethanol.

Subject: [old-chevy-truck] Brake troubles.

I started work on my grandfathers 1953 chevy 1/2 ton pickup a few
weeks ago. I rebuilt the master cylinder and now I am ready to rebuild
the wheel cylinders but I can not remove the brake drums. The truck
has been parked in a garage in the desert for ten years now. I backed
the shoes off as far as the adjuster would go. I spent about an hour
and a half punding and prying. Are there any tricks out there that
could help me.

RE: [old-chevy-truck] Brake troubles.

2008-10-08 Thread corvallis
Yes, the rear wheel could be rusted to the axle flange. I had this problem
with a 1967. Loosen the wheel nuts several turns but don't take them off.
Then drive around and around the block trying to drop the rear wheel into
every pothole you can find. .bill

Hi Scott,

As Jeffrey pointed out, if the drums turn they are not
stuck to the shoes but there still could be deep wear
grooves trapping the drum on the shoe. That is
probably the case if the drums can be wiggled a little
but not removed.

If the drum turns but cannot be wiggled at all, it
probably is rusted to the axle flange in back, or the
hub in front. Some PB Blaster Penetrating Catalyst
squirted around the base of the studs and allowed
to sit overnight might do the trick.

Good Luck!

RE: [old-chevy-truck] 6 volt vs 12volt wiring

2008-10-13 Thread corvallis
Welcome to the group. The higher the voltage the smaller the wire size can
be. I don't have exact size you could use.

I use 14-gage for all my old stuff; I only own old stuff.

You might consider a complete wiring harness. If your gauges are behaving,
no additional bits should be needed. .bill

Happy Monday to you all.
I know it is not stock, but my 52 had been updated to 12volt with
alternator. The only evidence I have seen of step down resistor is for
the coil. I don't know if anything was done for the gauges. The
headlights and tail lights are 12v.
My question(s)
1. I will be replacing the wiring piece by piece. Is there a guide for
the wire size I should be using? Does it need to be larger for a 12v
set up?

2. Typically what step down devices are needed for gauges and
accessories?
Any help is appreciated. This may have been covered before but I am new.
Thanks, Ken Wagner

Too bad youaren't a little closer to me. I have an extra that I would let go
for cheap. Shipping would take it back up to costing what you could get
yours re-done for. Ask around at the local upholstery shops. It may not be
as bad as you think. By the way..be very careful if/when you pull the
headliner down..that is their second favorite place.

I forgot to add.if you're cleaning up mouse stuff, wear all the
protection you can, including a shower cap and shower as soon as you get
done, wash what you were wearing in bleach. My seats I got from my dad. They
were recovered with the same type of material used on snowmobile seats. They
have worn like iron and don't crack when you climb in the truck and it's ten
below. I got a '48 Chevy in Feb of 81. It was full of mice and I got some
kind of disease that put me out for a week or so. Don't know what it was but
I had symptoms of pox and measles. This stuff can make you sick and all

RE: [old-chevy-truck] Re: sync those carbs

2008-10-27 Thread corvallis
It is hand held. You warm up the truck, loosen the linkage between the two
carbs, then adjust to get the air flow at the mouth of each carb to be the
same. You go back and forth between the carbs while the truck is idling
away. You're trying to get the air being sucked thru the carbs the same so
you're working between the richness screw and the idle screw.

1. warm up engine

2. loosen the throttle shaft couplings so the carbs are free from what the
other carb is doing

3. adjust idles so carb air intake is the same, engine running (use
Unisync)

4. now change the richness a bit (we're working for both carbs to have the
same idle and richness)

[If you open one carb's throttle a bit, and it stalls, it means the
other carb is too lean (so you'd richen it a bit)]

5. adjust both carb idles so they are the same(repeat back and forth steps
4 thru 6)

6. do a final idle check on both carbs using Unisync.

7. tighten nuts on throttle shafts.

This procedure is modified from the wording I use for dual SU carb syncing.
I have not done this on dual Chevy carb setups but it should work. Others
who've done Chevys can chime in here please. .bill in oregon

Hello All,
My 51 chevy 1/2 ton has a 3 on the tree. The original screws that
hold the shift lever on the steering column are gone. One has been
replaced with a machine screw with matching threads and the wrong
head, the other whole is still empty. According to the assembly
manual (sect. 7 sheet 2.00) the part number is 451181 (Bolt). I can't
seem to figure out what the part number is for the screw in Jim
Carter, Classic Parts, LMC, etc. If anyone knows where I can get two
of these, or can direct me to a website that has them I would
appreciate it. I have the "Yoke" that holds the shift lever to the
column, I just need the screws that hold it down. Thanks

OK for some of you purest out there you might not like this question (sorry

I want to have some tire skirts made for my 57 3100, does anyone know where
I can find someone who is capable of this type of fabrication?

Please don't say "google it" (done that), I've also reached out to some of
the manufactures of other tire skirts and they were not interested in making
a "one off" product.

I think this product will give my truck a very nice streamlined look, and
since I'm putting in a 3" drop axel (old school drop) I thought the tire
skirts would be a nice touch.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

much advantage there is to the power booster. It makes braking easier, yes
but I can "lock them up" now with foot pressure. What would I gain by the

RE: [old-chevy-truck] Carburetor adapter

2008-11-08 Thread corvallis
If you wanted a second adaptor, just take the one to a machine shop. I had a
similar adaptor made to stick a 1940's downdraft Chevy carb on a 1961
Mercedes. The original Solex carb leaked at the top forever so I swapped it
out. Linkages all lined up. Thing went like a scalded rat; I could
scratch-out in first and second gear. .bill in oregon

Have a 51 6400 truck that will need the entire brake system taken care of.
I am not real fond of the single master cylinder setup these trucks
have and have heard that some are able to upgrade to a dual master
cylinder.
Have any of you guys done a swap like this, and if so what master cyl
did you use?

I agree with Jim ;
Re-sleeving is fine , use _brass_ not stainless , White post
Restorations had been doing this for years and years...
Be aware that Bendix still makes the correct master cylinder for
your truck , takes some searching to find someone with the part # ,
then it's a breeze to get .

Jim Wrote :
It has been my experience with these master cylinders that if you
clean it up with a wire brush, you will see the bore size on the side in the

casting. I would also say, that after 57 years or so, that it's time to get
your master sleeved with brass or stainless. There are a number of places
that
can do this for you, for about the price of a new master from China. But
remember, this stock master is a single line and if you have failure there
it's
time to hope your emergency brake works! Don't cheap out on your brakes!

Well, I did some more looking around. Napa Auto also has a rebuilt
(no new) for about $55.00. Strange thing was Napa's had a pn and
photo that EXACTLY matched the pn and photo on the Kragen website. I
thought that as a general rule, Napa had higher quality parts, but
guess not...

Also looked at Autozone's site, but nothing different there, except
it's a special order.

Does anyone have a water pump manufacturer they would recommend?

Thanks,

RE: [old-chevy-truck] New start for an old engine.

2008-12-03 Thread corvallis
Make sure you have fresh gasoline. The stuff today can separate out after a
year or two. I use two gas filters. First one, closer to the tank is a mesh
type. This can be taken apart and cleaned of the big stuff. Second is a
plastic type with fine (paper?) element inside. Replace this when it plugs
with the small stuff. These filters don't fill up completely with running so
don't worry; it's a visual thing.

Turn the engine over by hand to make sure it'll go all the way ..two cycles.
If it sat with gas in the carb those ten years, there is residue in there
and that might cause starting problems as will the rust dust that is at the
bottom of the carb; the top can be taken off for a look-see. I usually fill
the carb with gas and squirt some in each cylinder before the first start.
Good luck. .bill in oregon

I'm sure others will give you some good detailed advice but, for one, you
would want to make sure you have "clean gas". May mean cleaning the tank
(several methods available), fuel line, etc. or at the very minimum
installing a good in-line gas filter.

I was taught to shoot some good quality low viscosity oil into each cylinder
before hand turning the engine to make sure the cylinder walls are lubed
before trying to start the engine. Next, I was taught to not send spark to
the plugs while using the starter to turn the engine for a brief moment or
two; just to make sure everything is getting oiled.

JZ, numerous vendors carry them online. Might look at www.chevsofthe40s.com
or www.bowtiebits.com . I see them used on eBay all the time.

I do not have a part number. They fit over the manifold bolts and between
the intake and exhaust gaps to hold both in place.

I can walk and drive an automatic transmission automobile , I walk
with a cane and often sort of stagger off to the right , balance
isn't quite right yet .

I run out of steam pretty quickly but I keep plugging along , the
Dr. told me to do various jobs requiring stretching so I wahsed my
car ~ _OW_! . he took X-Rays and said ' good ! keep at it , stop
when it hurts ' .

back pain 24/7 .

Big bash on my head didn't make me one bit smarter either .

Looks like I'll be forced to go back to work in January or loose my
house.

Truck is in the garage getting dusty , no Christmas wreath this
year , I charged the battery last week and need to run it a while
soon .

Have you in Az. been getting any of the freezing soaking rains we're
getting ? looks like a soggy , _cold_ Christmas is on tap .

I would start at your local auto parts store. You have some pieces in hand,

I got some new (classic parts of america) tail lights for christmas to fit
my 51 1/2 ton with its
original 6v system. They came with two single filament bulbs in them. I'm
guessing one for
brakes and one for tail lights. I want to convert to a dual filament bulb
for stop & tail and use
the other bulb for turn lights. Where do I get the sockets? I also bought
the replacement
bracket that holds the 21 candle power bulbs instead of the 3 cp bulbs. The
problem is that
it's just a bracket and no sockets. Where do I get the sockets with the
wires on them? I want
to make sure the sockets are the right size to fit the new bracket. Thanks
guys and gals

RE: [old-chevy-truck] OT : Termites ?

2008-12-27 Thread corvallis
When you get done, be sure to test for them coming back. Some places in
So.Cal. have infestations that cover miles. There are detector tubes that
are placed around to track when they come into your area. Then special
poison is put in the tubes that is carried back to the main nest(s). .bill

Greetings All and Happy New Year

Have a somewhat strange question. A friend of mine who owns quite a few
vintage autos (none with a 6-banger) told me that he had read somewhere that
it is not good to simply idle your old vehicle - you should always drive it.
In fact, he said that idling it is worse for the engine than not starting it
at all if you're not going to drive it - condensation or something. I have
a '50 3100 that is not a daily driver but I try to get it out and drive it
once a week or so. During the winter, however, there are weeks that I just
idle it in the garage for 15 or 20 minutes. Any thoughts on whether idling
a vehicle is bad for it?

Thanks
 Ken
