Re: CWS swbookmarkfixes01 rebasing and licensing

2012-07-03 Thread Ross Gardler
I'd suggest being even more patient. In my experience people don't give
answers to general queries involving legal issues. A specific question,
like "please can we we have CWS foo since the community wishes to integrate
it" is more likely to get a response.

The general case, as far as we are aware, remains the same. Oracle have, so
far, never refused our requests when they have been specific and actionable.

Hi Dennis,

You did a good job on it then too.

I just took the time to go back and read over the exchange on the legal
JIRA entry and a quick read, again, of your markup to the original TOU
text.

For a TOU link in the website, wiki and forum footer I think it is a
good think to just finish this up and use it.

The website no longer offers account creation so with the new TOU and
the current http://www.openoffice.org/privacy.html , I suppose it would
be done (for today :)

where one does still have a difference between registered and
non-registered users:

- the media wiki already has
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OpenOffice.org_Wiki:Copyrights
so I suppose that would be done (for today) also.

- the forums, just add a requirement that everything new is ALv2 in
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/ucp.php?mode=terms (and
it's translations)

At least it seems this simple to me, does it really need to be thought
out a lot further then that?

RE: Terms of Service on Forums

2012-07-03 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
@Rob,

Yes, I am seeing what you are seeing.

Concerning the ToU for the forums, it is the same as what was previously on the
web site. While there is a license grant for non-code and other places where
no other license is applied, the license is also to "all Users".

@Rob, @Drew, @Kay

I created an issue that proposed a new terms of use that was consistent with
the Oracle ones for ASF and would have not made this problem worse, as far as I
can tell. That was long ago and it went nowhere. The JIRA issue is here:
. Here's the connected issue
on our Bugzilla: . I
came to our Bugzilla because LEGAL-104 can't have attachments. The attachment
on the Bugzilla provides a red-lined transformation of the Oracle ToU into one
that could work for the forums, wikis, and web pages now under ASF
custodianship.

It addresses some of the cases that Rob also mentions. I stand by my analysis.
You might want to see how to carve out what you want from that, since it is at
least a start and the places where further customization may be called for are
all identified.

 - Dennis

Some months ago it was discussed with the ASF Board whether a privacy condition
and safe-harbor setup was desired. That apparently didn't get anywhere.

a)It is a good question about the scenario, common or not..But I think Peng
wants to ask for comments about the technical solution.

streams will have a copy in memory and simultaneously the VBA macros are
parsed into Spreadsheet VBA model, and end users can see and edit the VBA
macros in IDE. Be aware, the modifications will only be kept in Spreadsheet
VBA model, and will be lost when end users do saving[to xls], instead, the
copy of the VBA Streams in memory will be saved back. So,if end users open
the saved xls file in MS Excel, they will only see the original VBA macros.

Yes - it goes to the page on the website - a page I tried to get people
to look at for fixup months ago - but there was no interest in doing so
at the time, and yes as it stands it is just wrong.

So fix that page and the problem is gone isn't it.

 1. How are the extensions introduced such that conforming ODF consumers

> in order to produce conforming ODF documents?
>
> a)That's a good question.Because current ODF formats on Track Changes are
limited, that means only limited capabilities are able to be supported. In
order to achieve our goal to improve the fidelity with MS Word, we have to
extend Track Changes ODF formats and propose to OASIS ODF to become
standard at the end. Thus, the compatibility with previous releases will be a
challenging job.Our strategy is that the current import/export code logic
on Track Changes will be kept to ensure the same supported change records
defined in ODF 1.1/1.2 as before in our improved solution. If
possible,the extended
parts will be implemented with another code logic, not mixed, to ensure
these parts will not be recognized by previous releases.

b)And also,it seems a good idea to provide an option item in
"Tools->Options...->Writer->Compatibility" to turn on/off the
improvements.Thanks.

c) We should avoid to generate un-usable ODF document, otherwise, the design
should have problem..
d) I don't think it necessary to give warning message to end users when
saving changes records with our improvements..I think it better for an
application to enable a mechanism to provide warning message to end users
when identifying un-recognized info.

e)Finally, our improvements on the ODF formats on Track Changes will be
proposed and taken as OASIS ODF standards.

Are you not seeing what I'm seeing? The TOU does not currently point
to the main website page.

Go to the forum and look at the bottom of the page where it says "By
any use of this Website, you agree to be bound by these Policies and
Terms of Use". Then click the link and read.

Continuing with what is there is entirely out of the question, right?
It is Oracle's terms of use, assigning rights of the content to
Oracle.

Please someone tell me that they are also seeing this.

Hi Peng,

The record macro function will be no help here, well not much anyway.

A question of import is - what kind of report is it, one made from the
Report Builder or one made from the embedded report wizard.

But - you can actually do this without in more ways then using a script
(macro).

1 - Be sure to create dynamic reports.

2 - Base your report on a query.

3 - Change the select criteria in the query before running the report.

For very simple changes you will not need a macro at all - you simply
use parameters for the selection criteria (or parts of it) and the
runtime system will prompt the user for specific values to replace those
parameters with. This is automatic in other words, with a dynamic report
based on a query definition.

Perhaps I'm mistaken - but - I thought it was rather decided to just let
the TOU continue pointing to the main website page, the idea being fix
it and cover the OO.o website site, forums and media wiki also.

I suppose it's simply time now to actually re-write the TOU page on the
main website and reap the rewards for all three services.

I'd keep the reuse issue separate. We're here to publish software.
Creating a reusable website is nice, but not our primary purpose. We
just need a basic terms of service that covers things like:

1) Privacy policy, including required notices for our use of Google Analytics

2) Statement that the user agrees to post only content that they own

3) Statement that user agrees to have their content hosted on the website

We can go beyond that in terms of an outgoing license if we really
wanted to, but it is not strictly necessary. And the fact we haven't
managed to do that in over a year makes me think that keeping it
basic, but accurate, is the most direct approach.

Suggested quick fix:

1) Remove the Oracle terms from the Forum

2) Make the current link in the forum footer point to this page:
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/ucp.php?mode=terms

3) Make this page also include the content from the privacy policy
here: http://www.openoffice.org/privacy.html (or link to it)

4) Ensure that the other NL forums either point to the same terms, or
an accurate translation.

5) (Future) If someone wants to have an outgoing license then they
should make a proposal and start a discussion on the forums about
that.

My two cents.

Hi Stefan,
Do you mean you want to open a report then change the filter in the
report using StarBasic macro?
if it is, this is not a VBA issue.
You can use the Record Macro function in AOO to store the macro
action, maybe you can get the answer.

2012-07-03 Thread Chen Peng
Comparing with xls-file, we lost VBA attributes when importing.
In xls-file, VBA macro is comprised by the source in IDE and related VBA
attributes.
We can't get the attributes from IDE in ods-file, we just can get the
source from IDE in ods-file.
Without those attributes we can't write the macro back to xls-file.

Yes, when Dave pointed this out the other day, I saw this as well.

We need to correct this page at least, and it would make perfect sense to
me to use these terms for the wiki, the forums, and our main web site,
www.openoffice.org, as well.

I brought this up a few days ago but no reply to that.

The terms of usage on forum is actually at:

There seems to be no terms of usage o wiki.

It is outdated, but it does not contain any "Oracle" blah blah blah.

Do we need lawer review for our updated forum term of usage?

Then to the footer and the "Policies and Terms of Use".

This links to this page: http://www.openoffice.org/terms_of_use

That starts with "This Site and its contents are made available by
Oracle America, Inc. for and on behalf of itself and its subsidiaries
and affiliates under common control ("Oracle")"

It is nearly all wrong. I consider a graduation issue that we get
this remedied.

Would it make sense to harmonize the terms with the wiki? Both allow
user/non-committer contributions.

Please do be patient when waiting for a response, tomorrow is a holiday you may
remember - US Independence Day. It's on a Wednesday and many people are taking
time off this week. While the weather in most of the US is atrociously hot, it
is absolutely perfect here on the Pacific Coast.

Note that there exists a tool named GNUN
http://www.gnu.org/software/gnun/
which does a nice job in keeping website translations up-to-date through
PO files (or Pootle), even though it relies on several server-side
assumptions and it would have problems in handling the current diversity
of NL pages.

You guessed it, it's GPL, which can be a feature or a bug according to
one's individual philosophy... but it's free software anyway, and at
least it's worth a look before implementing something similar.

Yes, that is true. However all the markdown created will be AL2 licensed while
the html is mostly something from the TermsOfUse that was discussed in a
different thread.

If you are concerned with a clear IP trail, and I know you are, then we should
proceed with Markdown and select HTML.

This can work for content that does not a quick response. Other files like
announcements and various news sources require a more immediate approach. This
same goal is the initial goal of the Apache CMS. It is to eliminate extraneous
process.

I think that process for translations is good and you provide one that will
work for most content.

I would add that the branding and navigation (but not the footer) markdown /
ssi's would benefit from this approach.

> we translate UI and webpages might help.

What we are targeting here is the NL user who notices a problem with a
translation and wants to help. These people may find Pootle to be any more
usual than HTML.

Let's not let a Pootle "all encompassing" process break the ability of
committers and contributors to make ad hoc contributions. If the tool you
describe is built then it should certainly carry some svn tags so that merges
of updated content from pootle don't overwrite any CMS based contributions that
have been made in the interim. These will be merge conflicts.

As long as your process includes (1) every time then there isn't a problem with
that. However that won't work because the translations in Pootle are where the
bulk of the work occurs.

I think there are benefits to both the CMS and the Pootle approaches, more
thought will need to go into the timeline and how to fully leverage the human
element between the project's base content, NL users and L10N Translators. As
always our goal is to allow more and more of the community to be able to easily
contribute.

Let's divide up the process as follows. I'm adding the notion of a string table
which could be implemented as a file for each language with:

string.mdtext
homepage: home

string.fr.mdtext
homepage: maison

string.en-GB.mdtext
homepage: home

string.it.mdtext
homepage: casa

(A) Apache CMS - Web Content is Edited / Website's built.
Some changes will be via string (sledgehammer ... ) and others by
content page.

(My outline)

(B) CMS to Pootle process

> 1) html2po and mdtext2po

Keep an index of the files included in this set. Perhaps use an
attribute (mdtext) or metatag (html) to self identify translatable files.
(footer.mdtext must remain in English since it has legal implications
and translators are unlikely to be IP lawyers.)

> 2) Load into Pootle

Include string table changes made through CMS.
During load handle any differences caused by conflicts between changes
made in (C) since the last (D)

I'd say it is one of the many ways to describe this bug, already fixed

A possible workaround, in the meantime, is described in comment 15 in

Any idea what is going on here? This seems to be something more than
the QuickStarter icon in the task bar.

Although I have not seen this in any clean install or any upgrade
install under controlled conditions, I did see this once in a "dirty"
upgrade of a pre-RC version of 3.4.0. At boot time (this was on
Windows XP) the full OpenOffice launcher would load and display, not
just QuickStart.

Has anyone able to reproduce this kind of error?

AOO 3.4 Impress not recognising Dual monitors?

2012-07-03 Thread Rory O'Farrell
I'm not yet in a position to raise a formal bug, but I would appreciate input
from other users who may have occasion to use AOO 3.4 to give a presentation.

I have not been able to get AOO 3:4 Impress to successfully recognise the
second monitor on later *ubuntu systems (say 11:10 and later).

I have requested information from others on the Forum in thread
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=54875

I would welcome input from users from the Apache lists; I bring it to the
attention of the ooo-dev list as some developer working on Impress may test
this in passing.

The particular circumstances you are in, and the task you are trying
to accomplish, is not necessarily covered by a specific single
process. So rather than focusing on process, I'd recommend
considering the overall forces at play and the known patterns for
resolving these forces.

If someone wants to contribute code to the project, then they need to
deal with three basic things:

a) Does the project want the code?

b) Technical integration

c) Getting the code under ALv2 or a compatible license.

This is true for committers as well. We all need to be concerned with
these questions. The main difference is that a committer operates
under Commit Then Review (CTR) rules.

#1 and #2 above are relatively easy. It is social and code. #3 is
not so much about a single process, but a logical argument. Someone
contributing code should have a logical argument for why the code is
properly licensed. There are several well-known conventions for
making this kind of argument, using procedures like an SGA. Even
committers implicitly make this argument whenever they check in code,
based on their iCLA obligations.

However, these procedures are neither necessary nor sufficient. But
they are well-known and following these conventions helps us all avoid
a lot of extra analysis. Of course, if necessary we'd be open to
considering other forms of argument aimed at proving the suitability
of license for a code contribution.

Back to your original question: An author posting original work to
the list, with an intent of contributing it to the project would
typically be accepted as an ALv2 contribution. An iCLA for the author
would be preferred for larger contributions, but an unambiguous
statement on the list (or in Bugzilla) is a good start.

But posting 3rd party code to the list, i.e., not original work, that
would probably raise a red flag.

Hope this helps.

besides the files listed on the SGA
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/ooo/pmc/ip-review/ Eike
Rathke, Mathias Bauer and Michael Stahl integrated some CWS last year,
their work got "documented" on the svn logs and this mailing list, see
for example this thread: http://markmail.org/message/3lqichu77wg3pfyu
I don't find swbookmarkfixes01 on the mail archive nor on the svn log.
So that CWS was not included on the original SGA nor in the code
integrated from CWSs.

RE: [Review|Discussion]For Ideas and Comments on the Vision of Writer's Track Changes Improvement

2012-07-03 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
I have questions about the way that the improvements are intended to be
extensions to the ODF format.

I understand from what is said that improvements are introduced into the ODF
document in a way that they will be ignored by older implementations and other
implementations that are unaware of them. The intention is to map to and from
.doc in a reliable manner.

 1. How are the extensions introduced such that conforming ODF consumers will
ignore them properly? Will users be able to turn off the improvements in order
to produce conforming ODF documents?

 2. Will ignoring the extensions result in an usable conforming ODF document
and will round-trip return to the producer of the extensions be tolerable.
Should there be warning when an user makes changes that rely on the
improvements in a document that was not produced by an improvement-aware
implementation?

 3. How are the improvement extensions to the ODF format being made known so
that other consumers of ODF can support them either partially or completely to
provide a smoother experience in support of their users and in providing
interoperability?

ad-hoc. They are very cooperative.

Unfortunately it's not that easy. The code is strictly under
ALv2 only when the code has been released by the ASF.
We are under incubation still so being strict that means
that you can only count with code officially reviewed by
the ASF IPMC and released.

I think the "effort to rebase" is actually pretty small as
we have avoided wild changes (precisely to ease code
merging). If we do rebase on Symphony (which is only
an option and not the most popular ATM), merging changes
from AOO is still relatively easy (I tried this myself
already).

I am going to be pretty honest with you (as with everyone).

We welcome new contributions, especially from people that
have experience with the codebase, but if the idea is simply
getting "your" code relicensed on the short term and leave
us with the problem of maintaining it or even worse, fixing
it, this is not going to work.

best regards,

Pedro.

Hi,

based on the discussion relating Windows 8 readiness etc. we have
identified 5 critical issues. And we have already started to work on
these issues and my plan is to have them all ready for a 3.4.1 that we
can decide at any time later if we want to move forward with the W8
support when we have everything in place in time.

For solving one of these issues we have to introduce a new warning box
which means that we have to translate a new string for 3.4.1.

I have updated the Pootle server already with the new string (17 words
only) and I would like to ask our translators to focus on this new
string as soon as possible (ideally this week).

Most important are the languages that we want release:

en-US ar cs de en-GB es fi fr gl hu it ja km nl ru sl pt-BR zh-CN zh-TW

and potentially "sk" where I have to update Pootle with the latest
available updates from Michal Hriň

The new string is in desktop - source - app.po

See for example for French"

desktop.src#STR_BOOTSTRAP_ERR_MULTISESSION.string.text

"de" will be covered by myself ;-) because there is currently a problem
that I don't understand and that I have to solve.

To simplify the update I would prefer if the string get translated on
the Pootle server.

Please send me a short note when an updated or better a translation of
the string is available. I will take care of the integration.

If anybody have problems doing it on Pootle please let me know.

Are the patches already released AL2 by Apache when they are published on the

Camtasia has s bunch of export options, including one for YouTube HD,

OK. I think that in that mail message "we" stands for Oracle,
not for Apache, so you'd have to ask Andrew Rist with his
Oracle hat.

We do have a nice relationship with Oracle and they have
always been very receptive with our requests so I certainly
recommend other communities to solve your issues and approach
them constructively.

FWIW, other ex-oracle employees have gotten CWSs successfully
included in our 3.4 release. AFAICT, all of them signed iCLAs
and were actively involved in the community getting their
patches cleaned up and working.

Hi Rob,

Nice video, good quality it looks good

Have a couple of questions for you if you don't mind.

Will the files generated directly from Camtasia run in the MS supplied
media player directly?

I did a quick read on their web site but didn't see that directly
answered.

I suppose should start just by asking what format files you are
producing?

Last - the video on youtube now, how large a file is the original you
uploaded?

Thanks,

Mentioned in an e-mail linked from the OP, dated June 7, 2011 - those of us
inside the project have been raising this topic from very early on, as you can
see. Making it easy for outside developers to meet their needs is a great way
to have them begin to join in and become insiders like you.

Re: CWS swbookmarkfixes01 rebasing and licensing

2012-07-03 Thread Ross Gardler
Hi Bjoern,

If the CWS was included in the original SGA then it is available under
the AL2. If it was not included in that original SGA, you want to
bring it here and the OpenOffice project want to see the work
committed then Oracle will, in all likelihood, make it available to
us.

Therefore, I suggest the following order of execution:

- determine whether the OpenOffice committers want the work
- confirm that Oracle have already or will make the code available
under the AL2 at our request
- submit patches against AOO trunk

That's what I was wondering as well. If the first run is slow because
you are loading additional software needed to measure the test runs,
then it is fair to discard the first run. But if the first run is
slow because of I/O related to loading the AOO code or the document,
then that is real and part of the real user experience.

Here is a spreadsheet demonstrating the approach I use when doing
performance comparisons:

http://people.apache.org/~robweir/perf/perf-compare.ods

It uses the chart to give a visual indication of whether the measured
differences are within the range of expected variability, or whether
they are are "real".

Re: [DISCUSS]Macros are lost after saving the xls file to ods, then save as to xls again

2012-07-03 Thread Regina Henschel

Hi,

chengjh schrieb:

Hi Peng,

Let me use a scenario to confirm your problem, solution and
question..Anything misunderstood,please correct me.thanks.

Problem:
When AOO launches an excel document with VBA,saves to ods and then saves to
excel again, the VBA info will be lost.

Solution:
a)The VBA streams of an excel document will be saved into the ods document
with binary format when converting an excel document to an ods document in
AOO Spreadsheet with certain controller.
b)Once the ods document containing the binary VBA streams is launched into
AOO or previous releases, with certain controller, the binary VBA steams will
be loaded[still binary stream in memory] or rejected..There is no any
impact on the application, the application can still work well.
c)Based on b),if the ods document is saved to an excel document, the binary
VBA streams will be exported, thus, the VBA info will not be lost.

I do not like the idea, that a binary code which I do not know what it
does, will be shipped together with an ods-file. Because the source it
editable in the IDE, the source and the binary might differ. The binary
can be dangerous although the source looks harmless. I consider this a
security problem.

Currently the macro is lost, although the source is in the ods-file and
commented as VBA macro. Isn't it possible, to write the macro back to
xsl-file from this source?

Kind regards
Regina

Question:
You are not sure whether this solution is reasonable. So, you want to know
the comments about your solution. If no comments, you will do so to
implement it.

well in spreadsheet, then I wanted to save this spreadsheet back to excel,
but all the macros are lost.
I propose to save the binary data of excel VBA to spreadsheet, when
saving excel to spreadsheet, then we can get the binary data from
spreadsheet if need to save the spreadsheet to excel again.
The binary data will not impact the open/save... of the ODF format
application, it will not be touched when we operate the ODF formant
applications. The binary data will be just used when we want to save the
spreadsheet to excel, it is just a data prestore about saving spreadsheet
macros to excel.
Can you give some advice about the solution?

Nothing in Robs first email allowed help to get this CWS into AOO or clarify
the situation, so why bother with it at all?

Anyway. I feel I have better chances to get things done by dealing with Oracle

What effort?

I think we have been pretty consistent here every time the
subject is brought up by someone external to the project.

I am not a lawyer and neither is Rob or most of the people
doing development here and even if we were lawyers we have
no power to relicense code that isn't ours. In general we
don't release patches or CWSs other than what you see in
our releases (at this time 3.4 only).

Re: [DISCUSS]Macros are lost after saving the xls file to ods, then save as to xls again

2012-07-03 Thread Lei Wang
As I know, VBA code can be related with specific sheet. When end user open
the ods file and remove this sheet, then save it as xls file. According to
your solution, all VBA codes will be restored in xls file. Is this xls file
valid?

Another concern is does your solution conform to ODF1.2 standard?

I'm still learning the tool (Camtasia) It looks like if you do the
original recording at a higher resolution than the output resolution
then you can tell it to automatically zoom in to area where your mouse
is. But in this case my recording resolution is the same as the
output resolution, so no zooming is possible.

But I can add text annotations, arrows, etc.

Re: [QE] AOO 3.4.1 First Snapshot build PVT Report

2012-07-03 Thread Yi Xuan Liu
The reason of removing the first round result is that we found that the
first round result is much different from other rounds. It is usually
slower to open the sample file at the first time. So, we could view the
first round result as an outlier and removed it when computing the average
and standard deviation. However, the first round is also important for
user experience. Maybe, we could list the first round performance
separately.

As for the second value, t-test is a good suggestion and I'll research on
it and use it in the following test. Thanks!

No. If you nitpick, get your facts right. The work was created as I was a
german employee of Oracle. IANAL, but as Urheberrecht (copyright, the claim to
authorship) is inalienable in Germany. At that point in time, Oracle had the
exclusive right of use for the work, but AFAIK it is still _my_ work.

You could make it ALv2 with or without checking
it into SVN. But if it is not your IP, and your right to contribute

someone to delete the code.

How about, instead of wasting posts with sentences with way to many
conditionals, you simply answer if this was covered by the SGA, so I know if I
should hassle Oracle with that again (which I might or might not do as the CWS
is hardly mission critcial). If I ask Oracle about this and it turns out Oracle
already handed over code to AOO, but they had to burn ressources on that
because AOO does not seem to be able to come clear with what it owns, that
would throw a rather bad light on AOO, dont you think?

But given the unconstructive reply here, I have to conclude AOO not even
slighty interested in my casual contribution.

Also, isn't this essentially the same question that was raised by

A particular thing I've seen is that when I translated that string and
click "send", two more strings were offered to translate, but both, on
the original English version were empty with only a space on it. I did
not take note about the "string" location, sorry.

[TRANSLATION][3.4.1]: update Pootle server to include new string for a new warning box

2012-07-03 Thread Jürgen Schmidt
Hi,

based on the discussion relating Windows 8 readiness etc. we have
identified 5 critical issues.

See for example for French"

desktop.src#STR_BOOTSTRAP_ERR_MULTISESSION.string.text

https://translate.apache.org/fr/OOo_34/translate.html?unitstates=fuzzy,untranslated

Sorry, I thought you knew about the SGA(s) already. The files covered
by the Oracle SGA(s) are listed here:

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/ooo/pmc/ip-review/

That is what was granted to Apache. Our 3.4 release was based on that
SGA, using the trunk version of those files. That is what we released
under ALv2. So in that sense the project very much has a clue what is
covered by ALv2. We did an extensive audit of this.

I don't think it is advisable to speculate beyond that, concerning
terms on files not included in the SGA, or terms on other revisions of
those files. What you need in that case is competent legal advice,
not some non-expert comment from someone on a mailing list. Or talk
to Oracle.

exactly, and one very important thing in building communities is the
active participation in the work that have to be done in the many
different areas here in the project. Everybody who is interested to
active participating in the project can find it's niche and can start
doing something. Don't expect that somebody else is doing the work for
you. If you need help, explain your needs and convince others to help you.

It is important to learn from past misbehavior, bad discussion or other
general mistakes and try to improve things over time. It is completely
useless to make insinuations about former mistakes or misbehavior etc.
that potentially force emotional reactions or something like that.

I think we all have a common goal and we should focus on constructive
collaboration to move the project forward.

I know it is not always easy and I personally have to reflect my own
behavior from time to time. But I am anxious to improve myself.

In the end I am watching what people are doing in and for the project
and try to build my own picture of people. I can't make it perfect for
everybody but I am trying to work with everybody who is willing to work
with me ;-) The project is huge and will hopefully become bigger. It is
important that we have respect for each other and work together.

I don't see that we drive people away but if it is really the case then
I would like to hear about it from the people who leave the project
first hand. If people are not able to raise their concerns on the
mailing list it is impossible for others to understand and to change
something. Important is the direct communication on the mailing list and
not via any proxies like our mentors.

Humans are different with very different personalities and we are from
different countries with different cultures but we all have a common
goal. We should remember this!

So why skip the numbers for the first round test? Isn't that what
real users see, the first round? Sure, it will be slower as code is
loaded into memory, files read from disk, etc. But the same thing
happens for users.

Also, I think the interesting 2nd number is the "standard error of the
mean", which == std deviation / sqrt(count of measurements). That is
what gives the error bars (confidence interval) on the measurement.
For example, 95% confidence limits on a measurement would be:

lower bound = mean - 1.96*standard_error
upper bound = mean + 1.96*standard_error

And easy "rule of thumb" is to compare the "before" and "after"
measures and see if there is overlap in the intervals.

For example:

Before interval: (1.0, 2.0)
After interval: (1.5, 2.5)

Because the intervals overlap, there might not be a significant
difference between the two.

But:

Before interval: (1.0, 2.0)
After interval: (2.5, 3.5)

In this case there is a clear difference, because the confidence
intervals do not overlap.

A t-test could also be used here, but the above approach works well in
Calc if you use the "stock 2" type chart. This has series for
high/low/close/open. So you could do something where the high and low
values are 95% confidence intervals. This makes it easy to tell what
is important from a glance.

http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-general/201106.mbox/%3cbanlktikvbfnr1viwqyw1+spzf68zx5g...@mail.gmail.com%3E

ownership of the CWS is now at ASF. So two simple questions:

- Is this (my) work in this CWS released under AL2 to the public already with
  this?
- If not and I do the work to re-base this CWS against master, and have it
checked into an Apache SVN branch will the work then be immediately
  available under the ALv2 license?

How common is this scenario? Wouldn't the more typical user action
be to re-save the document back to XLS format? Isn't that what
happens by default when they do a save when editing an XLS file? If
the user does this, will the macro be saved correctly?

I will update Pootle with your changes and the merge it with the new
templates that introduce 1 further warning message (17 words) that you
hopefully can translate as well when it is available.

We appreciate your contribution and hope that other will join you to

I hope our download numbers motivate some people to join ;-) We should

Re: [DISCUSS]Macros are lost after saving the xls file to ods, then save as to xls again

2012-07-03 Thread chengjh
That doesn't matter that you think they are VBA or Star Basic when saving a
xls with VBA as ods file..To some APIs with behavior difference, they will
be distinguished with the line "Option VBASupport 1" at the beginning..End
users can modify the Star Basic codes in AOO Spreadsheet, but all Star Basic
contents including original and modified will be lost when exporting to xls
file..Here,if the ods file is converted from a xls file based on Peng's
solution, the behavior is still kept unchanged...The only difference is that
the saved binary VBA streams within the ods file will be exported to the
xls file at that time. Thus, when end users launch the xls file in MS
Excel, the original VBA will be there. That's the expected result.thanks.

I think there is a misunderstanding, because I expressed myself not clear
enough.

Yes, the update service for OOo 3.2 and OOo 3.2.1 is not running.
I have proposed to activate it.

Before I activated it, we need to check, if the manual update of OOo 3.2/OOo
3.2.1 works. Thus, I was asking for checking the following:
- take a system with OOo 3.2 or OOo 3.2.1 installed.
- download manually an AOO 3.4 installation package.
- install the AOO 3.4 installation package in order to update installed OOo
3.2/OOo 3.2.1
- give feedback, if update of OOo 3.2/OOo 3.2.1 by AOO 3.4 works fine or not.

Sorry that I was not clear enough.

Best regards, Oliver.

Re: [DISCUSS]Macros are lost after saving the xls file to ods, then save as to xls again

2012-07-03 Thread chengjh

Question:
You are not sure whether this solution is reasonable. So, you want to know
the comments about your solution. If no comments, you will do so to
implement it.

a)The meta-requirements collected and discussed in the Wiki contain broad
scope..And we have submitted our requirements to the group..currently,we
are keeping an eye on its progress.

b) One of the significant principles of the improvement is to keep
compatibility

with
previous releases of AOO/Symphony in order to ensure the persistent
document. The new formats saved in the improvement will be lost when being
launched into old versions' AOO/Symphony.

Also, do the proposed improvements favor one of the three proposals or

solution.Thanks.
Currently, our proposals focus on the interoperability
fidelity improvements with MS Word, the binary format is our first goal, and
OOXML is followed. Actually, ODF limitations are not our first
consideration to improve when working on the new design because I think the
perfect solution is the most important..we are still working to find it
out..Once the solution is ready, I think the ODF should not be a problem.

document with MS Word, the track changes feature becomes a blocker. It
blocks end users to move from MS Office to AOO..So,they demand us to
improve the function area to meet their requirements in time.

Thanks for sharing this interesting data.
I haven't found an explanation what these numbers mean though, so I have
to guess: The first number is the average value and the second is the
sigma value for running the test, right?
