Yeah, that looks a lot more promising than the 'fun' I'm having with my

yours should be fairly straightforward to get working.

Good luck,

Here in Oklahoma City all the locals, well at least the major ones, are
broadcasting in digital/HD. One station has five sub-channels active.
Most just have two or three. Two if they are just doing digital and HD
of their normal programming and three, or more, if they are doing some
alternative programming [ channel five does their weather radar live
24/7 on one - it's funny when their Windows machine crashes on live TV
and they have to reboot.].

Digital/HD is here and in the USofA it will become the standard in the
next two or three years. Better start preparing for the switch over.

Since we are talking about TV tuners, I always wanted to ask someone
more experienced.
I have a Crypto TV tuner (specifically a PC-Radio Crypto III tuner),
which I

do not know how to configure.

It is not listed in the TV-cards' list
(thorugh Yast's Hardware ---TV and Radio Card Setup)
neither can Yast autodetect it.

I understand it's not a common pci card (although it was a really good
bargain), but i guess there is a way to
enable and configure it. The company (http://www.crypto.gr ) only
offers support and drivers for MS Windows and does not mention anything
about *nix environment.

I guess though it would be nice to have it working, since it is the
biggest problem i have while migrating to OpenSuse.

PS: Any help or piece of advice would be usefull (but please be specific
since I am not familiar with any kernel compiling issues)

I'm running MythTV on my 10.2 system. Works great. Very easy to
install and set up from the Packman repository(mythtv + mysql). Do a
little reading on the MythTV site for what you need to do to configure
the backend - its not hard if you follow the directions.

I've got my MythTV running in a separate KDE session which is
displayed on my TV... and love it. Very easy to use, and has some
rather nifty features like cataloging all your video, and linking it
up with the IMDB cover art and descriptions.

And the added benefit is that these cards (150, 250 and 500) have
hardware encoders, so they output a Mpeg2 TS, so no need to use your
CPU for encoding the picture for use in MythTV.

I set up MythTV on a lark a few months ago, mostly because I wanted to

I fear that a lot of pain is coming my way with the looming digital

companies are converting sooner. From reading the mythtv mailing list
it seems recording HDTV is a hit-or-miss proposal, especially off cable.

Not exactly, there are good HDTV cards, which work for off the air
signals. And for cable, you should request, and your cable company
have to deliver a cable box with firewire output. They are required so
by an FCC ruling. Usualy they do not, but after I insisted at Comacast
office, they exchanged mine. And mythTV is perfectly happy to manage
this box (Motorola) and record over the firewire. I have read some
guys even have got multiple such boxes and chain-connect them, and
MythTV was able to manage them all. Changing channels, everything.

It just seems from reading the mythtv list like firewire is difficult to
get going and unreliable. A lot of people also seem to have problems
getting their cable provider to give them a box with a firewire port, or
they get one and find out all the channels are encrypted anyway. My
experiences with Comcast's technical support in my area does not give me
a warm fuzzy feeling that they will be helpful, or even know what I'm
talking about.

My gut feeling is that this is not by accident, that the cable companies
want to charge for their DVR solutions and the media providers don't
want people being able to time-shift and skip commercials. I generally
don't have good feelings about this switch to digital. I don't think
it's primarily intended to benefit consumers.

I also don't think over-the-air is likely to be a workable solution for
me. I live in an apartment, down in a valley. I never had much luck
getting a workable analog picture with an indoor antenna, so I think
digital is probably out of the question.

Hi Gents and Ladies,

I am trying to build a multimedia station out of an Compaq EVO, I've
been looking for video tuner and video card PCI (no AGP slots on the
hardware CPU), and with some many options on the market I am lost, there
is some many cards out there, with ATI chips on board, memory options. I
am looking for a TV tuner compatible with suse 10.2, and another one
with video output for TV (main goal is to start as movie player and then
upgrade the system to work with mythtv), I have a older ATI card, I
wanted to use, but without a AGP slot, I am forced to buy another one, I
was looking some cvards that even come with the remote control, but the
vendors don't know anything about Linux compatibility.

If someone could send me a link to read or any comments I would greatly
appreciate!!

Thanks in advance for you help

Regards,

Jose
