languages and If i remember correct Jdd translated to French, I will
look on to it and get back to you if I find something.

EDEKA is a supermarket and they say normally: Wir lieben Lebensmittel. -
 We love food.
Now they say: Wir lieben SUSE Linux. - We love SUSE Linux.
That`s the best marketing, we can get! I hope other supermarket chains or
banks will follow with something like that.

 Best regards,

 That's good :-)

 3. There are currently a vast majority of wishes for news to be
published only a couple of times/week instead of every day, or once a
 week.

Hmmm so we're back to square 345 and the monthly magazine idea. I guess
 we should do both...

Yeap we should, I think I have a Gdoc about the monthly magazine
somewhere or else I have notes from previous conversations we had,

 Sure

unfortunatelly this month is a rough month full of work away from
 wifi.

No worries, just keep it from burning down completely :P

The main problem here is manpower but this is something we could walk
through if the planning is good.

Nothing happens if you don't invest anything. That's just plain physics.

Definatelly this is something we should look into it in the upcomming
 Marketing Hackfest...

 When is that?
Still under planning but sometime in late October I hope. There will
be news about that in the next 2 weeks(hopefully).

And now for the most important part:

In the 'write your opinion' section, the most recurring responses are
that non-technical and technical news should be treated equally, so I
 guess we'd need a power-user who's willing to write for n.o.o.
regularly. The other is that series like the past CLT and similar
don't belong on the news site, but there are suggestions to either
create a separate site like omgubuntu of fedoraftw, or to find a way
to merge the n.o.o. with lizards. How could that be done?

There was an OMG openSUSE page but at the end we were just a couple of
people writing to is so the guy who made it just throw it away. With
the exception of part of the Summer I could help on writing as I told
 you before.

Yes another failure because of missing man power

My opinion and it is one thing I also wanted for the magazine is to
form a Team, make regular meetings in the Marketing Channel(IRC) as we
did before, throw all the ideas about what we thing we should do and
plan how and when we will release that.

 What do you think?

Pulling this off needs planing yes.

  4. The site's appearance is rated nearly 50 for 4, and 30+ for 3.
About twenty percent want an overhaul, the same are against it, while
50+ % think the appearance is not important, but only content.

I think if we work the content more a 'facelift' on the appearance is
needed, just to show the 'freshness', if you get what I mean.

[opensuse-marketing] Re: [NEWS SUGGESTION] Commandline Mondays

2014-05-22 Thread Kostas Koudaras
2014-05-22 10:04 GMT+03:00 Nenad Latinović ne...@latinovic.info:
Hi guys. Here goes another 'noob friendly' suggestion, which could
subsequently help 'raising the bar' with newer linux users, or leisure users,
 if you may.
The idea is the following: I wrote commandline Monday, but it can be any day,
which is usually a slow day in the news section. On that day, I'd publish a
short article on a specific command, what it does, and use an example. It
could have quite a few benefits:
 1) A fun way to learn commandline
 2) Easier teaching and adoption of the commandline culture in the exclusively
 GUI world
 3) 1 and 2 would ideally help in raising the bar with locating problems,
subsequently maybe help newer users like me file more quality bug reports
without having the developers and maintainers waste time issuing instructions
on how to gain more information on the bug, or the forum problem topic.

It would be actually an 'as you go' learning experience for me also, as I
decided to start learning commandline, so it would be a great excuse for me
 to keep at it.

We could also add a 'conf file of the week' or something of the sort, to
subtly learn which files, log files and such usually appear with which
 problems.

What do you think of this idea? Feedback would be very generous on your part.
I really like the idea, the only thing is if this should be on news or
somewhere else...
No matter what I say it is a great idea and go for it.
Kostas

P..S.: Could someone please publish the news article, It's been sitting in
review line for days now. It won't be exactly news if it's not published.

Even if it exists already it still needs people sharing stuff, maintaining

Thanks to Google, openSUSE has an excellent number of slots and an
equally excellent number of mentors and students for Google Summer of

 Hi everyone,

the french openSUSE community is about to organize a hackaton in
Paris, France, on 8/9 March of 2014. The event will happen in the
Epitech engineering school, which has been eased thanks to the
partnership between SUSE France and Epitech.

People should work at least on open stack and if things go well, there
should be people working with OBS, openSUSE ARM, GIS Softwares, SUSE
 Studio and potentially more.

Really cool

That being said I have two questions :
 - how can the openSUSE marketing team help us in this challenge,
 particularly regarding train tickets ?

This goes to travel support program, but don't expect that much, it's
happening in the same fiscal quarter than osc14
Perhaps SUSE France has some travelling sponsor budget allowed ?
I disagree there are funds available for other events in the same
quarter afaik, it's just that it is not much and since this is the
only event you should definatelly apply.

 - Where can I advertise this event to the global community ? Do you
 have a prefered format ?
create the article and push it to news@o.o team
+1
If you have something ready send me and I can publish it asap.
Also there are people who can tweet etc. through the official openSUSE
channels, I am not sure if I still can do that but there are people
around that can do that if you wish.

 Best wishes,

 Alexis.

[opensuse-marketing] Monthly news

2014-01-31 Thread Kostas Koudaras
Hi Marketing people,

A few weeks ago some of us talked about reviving a form of weekly
news. Of course most of us agreed to have something every month
instead of every week. After talking with a few community people about
it and how we could do that we came up with some ideas.

Some of the ideas are:

- Have a monthly instead of a weekly release.

- Have it both in electronic form as well as in a printable form.

- Have it published every second Monday of the Month

- Have articles that are written for (and why not exclusively) for Monthly news.

- Host monthly team reports

- Release in News page

- Have interviews of people around and inside openSUSE.

- Unify the output from all the communication channels into a single news place.

Most of the above ideas are not new and we surely need some more
before we proceed but the general idea is to have the first issue
released at March 10.

We also need some artwork done and a catchy title for it.

Have fun

Maybe at some point make a meeting.
What are your ideas ?
Nikos is the guy that works with the infrastructure of the printed

something else wordpress related, but still looking for this.
BTW is it possible to have an article from OBS every month? In my mind
I have to reach people in all corners of the openSUSE Project and have
them write articles or even how to's. Maybe even give simple lessons
of how to make packages... What do you think?

2013/1/11 Peter Czanik pcza...@fang.fa.gau.hu:
 Hello,

Yesterday we had the first openSUSE beer event here in Budapest. There were
a couple of developers and users and as a surprise guest, even a senior
manager from the local Novell/SuSE office joined us. It was a very nice and
interesting evening, mostly getting known each other, but of course also
 talking about openSUSE.

One of the topics we discussed was why the active part of the Hungarian
openSUSE community is so small, especially as there were a lot more active
people 5-6 years ago. At conferences and even at the beer event I'm the only
one wearing an openSUSE T-shirt. It would be great, if we could have
T-shirts to have a lot more visibility at events where we go.

Question: is it possible to order a bunch of T-shirts, so the core of the
Hungarian openSUSE community could wear it at different conferences and
events? I think, about 15-20 T-shirts would cover most of the active people.
We plan a release party right after 12.3 is released, and would be great if
I could hand out the T-shirts at this event.
I'll be at FOSDEM, so instead of using the post office, I could pick them up
there and fly them to Hungary.

 Bye,
 CzP

[opensuse-marketing] openSUSE Collaboration Summer Camp in Greece

2012-05-16 Thread Kostas Koudaras
Summer in Greece! Is the weather too hot for you to code or contribute
to your favorite FOSS project? It is time to get together one more
time in this year's openSUSE Collaboration Summer Camp !!!

So, ok, I’ll be there! And then what?

We will be together next to the sea to watch various workshops (do not
forget to bring your laptop!) And we will work on our favorite
projects!

When?

The weekend 20-22 of July 2012, at the heart of Summer.

Where?

In central Greece at Grand Platon Hotel ( www.grandplaton-hotel.gr )
at Olympiaki akti (at the beach of the city of Katerini).

Who?

The Greek openSUSE community organizes the second openSUSE
Collaboration Summer Camp and will take care for smooth flow of the
program, location and details of the event. Aimed at everyone involved
in the FOSS which can both participate and make their own workshop!

Why all that?

Because we love what we do, we are having fun contributing to FOSS and
we hate doing it alone in our rooms during Summer time. Besides
coding, translating and all other ‘boring stuff’ there will also be
plenty of sun and beach, a large swimming pool and plenty of beers -
all paid by you since we only sponsor the sun, the fun and all the
other free stuff...Those who want to participate, please contact us so
we can better organize the availability of the rooms!
We are looking forward to seeing you all!

It's about openStack on openSUSE which is available thanks to work by B1 and

I think it's best to make it a kind of big-ish announcement: openStack is
availalbe for openSUSE, this is where to get it and how to use it (short)
with links. And some history on where it came from (B1, SUSE becoming
platinum partner of openStack, boosters worked on it, etc).

Should be done in the next few days...

 Who's up for it?

I could read them by tommorow and return in a couple of days with something :-)

- what the B1 ppl think of it
you mean shoot some questions to those guys by mail?

I think it's best to make it a kind of big-ish announcement: openStack is
availalbe for openSUSE, this is where to get it and how to use it (short)

It's worth mentioning also in the article that openSUSE now offers the
most complete selection of cloud software packages compared to other
major distros.  I recently learned this while talking to Robjo, who
maintains opennebula.   Unfortunately, my IRC logging system is
apparently broken so I can't copy/paste the conversation, but if you
were logged in last week to -project channel, you'll see the
conversation.  It's a nice ooh-factor that demonstrates how openSUSE
is consistently about choice and not about forcing an agenda on our
 userbase.

I will try to find the log, in the meantime I saw some things on
OpenStack and OpenNebula and now I am reading about Eucalyptus and I
agree that all three worth mentioning and give some importance to the
part that openSUSE provides people with more than one choices on how
to get things done.

Cool :-)
Do you have in mind the already existing android apps for openSUSE?
Could you give more info or an example of what you want?
Maybe I could write some :-)

 1. The interview is absolutely great, very technical and gives a great

 2. No mention of openSUSE anywhere I am not sure if such an interview
at openSUSE news as it shows no correlation to openSUSE.

Yeap there is no mention to openSUSE but I think that this is a noble

objections let's talk this through.

Re: [opensuse-marketing] Short Video about Installation (Italian)

2012-02-01 Thread Kostas Koudaras
2012/2/1 Alexjan Carraturo axjsl...@gmail.com:
I have created a short video that show installation of openSUSE 12.1.

The video (in Italian language) was made to show how is simple to do
the setup of openSUSE on a PC that have already another SO installed.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vs5RPHZAtdU

I know that is not too much, but I'd like to have feedbacks to improve
 this type of work.

Hey Alexjan, this is great work, do not underestimate your work, this
is something that could really help the Local users, maybe you could
add the link of the video to
http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Marketing_materials on Screencasts,
you may create english subs for the video as well but this is up to
you :D

We also have a series of videos that GCI students made and now we are
wondering how we could gather all this in maybe one page so that
people could look for them more easy, watching a video is more fun
than reading documentation.

Not relevant to your current mail: Also you could go to
http://forums.opensuse.org/ and make an Italian Section there too, I
would really like to help you with that if you have the will to do it
and you need any help. I am aying that since you seem to make serius
work there so this might be your next step in order to create a strong
structured local community.
Also you can contact Hawake (http://en.opensuse.org/User:Hawake) and
Caig(http://it.opensuse.org/Utente:Caig) who are doing some great work
to the Italian wiki(http://it.opensuse.org/Panoramica_del_Progetto)
and tell them to join forces with you ;-)

 Thank
 Alexjan.

[opensuse-marketing] Re: [opensuse-ambassadors] openSUSE night in Milan: What type of event?

2012-01-27 Thread Kostas Koudaras
2012/1/27 Alexjan Carraturo axjsl...@gmail.com:
 Hi to all

After the success of the fair in Cerea, we are invited to organize a
 openSUSE Night in Milan.

The idea would be to present, in a famous lug of Milan, openSUSE.

We're planning to make the first presentation of openSUSE, with one or
two talks, then a QA space, and finally do installation party.

Looking at the list of the types of events, I saw that this looks like
a Launch Party, but, we are organizing that event for Feb. 25, maybe
a little late for a Launch Party.

No it's never late for a launch or a release party ;-) but you can
name it install party as Jdd suggested :)

What type of event I could use? Tips?

Since the event in my city, and being a guest of this lug, I would
not need any kind of budget, but could really help me Marketing
material (Few promo DVDs, t-shirts, stickers, posters and the like).
Can I request the material here
 (http://software.opensuse.org/promodvd) as usual?

 Thank you in advance

 Friends,

AFAIK mirall, the ownCloud client, is now available in our update channel so
every openSUSE user should easily be able to get it on her box.

AFAIK you marketings have planned to make some fuzz around that, I already
 saw/wrote an article for/with Jos.

What's the status of that? Are you guys still interested to push that?
How? I certainly can do a developer blog post about it, but I am not sure if
 thats bold enough for you...

 regards,
 Klaas

I think we should promote that by writing an article on news, I find
this a very interesting for our users.
If you can start an article about the technical stuff I think I could
try and add some more to make it an 'appropriate' news article.
what do you think?

 Cool :)

Even if you're not coming this year, I especially welcome advice and
guidance from FOSDEM veterans. What worked in previous years?

 * Bring the Touchsmarts, people like to grope things.
 * Bring 12.1 DVDs, stickers and folders, people like to snatch things.
 * Bring Beer and T-Shirts, sell them for 1€ and give the proceeds to
the university. They will love you. (Pascal knows whom to give it to)
 * Have 2 guys, you can rely on at any time, to be on the booth. People
like to wander off into the awesome program. One minute it might seem
that you have a gazillion people on the booth and the next one it's
   deserted because RMS speaks.
 * Try as hard as possible to avoid that people leave their shit on
the booth. The corridors are narrow, the boths are small, there are
more and more people each year. If they all leave their Jackets,
laptops and bags on your booth there is no room to operate anymore.

what do I need to know?

 * You get two tables and a couple of chairs in a windy corridor
 * It's friggn cold and drafty
 * Don't try to plan anything, it's chaotic.
 * Have Pascals number on speed dial. He's the man.
 * Get drunk as early as possible :-)
I will I promise :D

what do I need to avoid?

Well you could start by avoiding me , I talk to much, more when
I'm drunk :D

 * Belgian Beer. At any cost.

No way this is the 2nd reason I go to Fosdem

I can only subscribe to the list given by Henne, except for the last bullet.
At least Saturday afternoon, we will not have anymore Geeko Beer old Toast!
 :D

I can bet on it ;-)

Accept luggage for 200€/day : clarify this with a printed panel.
 :D

Any computer placed on our table has to run openSUSE (SLE accepted), if not
 reformat it :D

+1
Have also my phone in quick dial (for any french questions)
Pascal will have so much things to be done in orga

Be early on site saturday, and ask that the booth stuff be on time
(this one is hard to achieve ... )

 Heya all,

I've just finished updating the posters we made last year at SCALE in

time for the openSUSE 12.1 release parties!

Who's up for translating them? download the svg files at the link below,
translate them (open in Inkscape, edit the text) and mail them back to
 me...

I will try to get at least Spanish (in the USA and Brazil and Spain),
Portugese (Brazil), Chinese (Taiwan/China) and a few European languages
(German, French, more?) printed. Of course IF they are translated :D

 Find the posters here:
 https://github.com/openSUSE/artwork/tree/master/posters/openSUSE%20is%20cool%20posters

 The files:
 FlyerFINALVERSION-OBS-STUDIO-KIWI_11x17-light.svg
 FlyerFINALVERSION-AppInstaller-Desktop-connect_11x17-light.svg
 FlyerFINALVERSION-Tumbleweed_11x17-light.svg

 FlyerFINALVERSION-OBS-STUDIO-KIWI_11x17.svg
 FlyerFINALVERSION-AppInstaller-Desktop-connect_11x17.svg
 FlyerFINALVERSION-Tumbleweed_11x17.svg

I made the light ones new but can't really decide if they look better or
not. I DO know the light ones will be easier to print, the normal ones
can be problematic in that regard due to the heavy use of black which
makes the paper wet and soft... We will have to see with the printers
 which ones they can print.

We do kind'a need to get this translated before Wednesday so we can
 start printing...

 Thanks in advance!

 Cheers,
 Jos

Re: [opensuse-marketing] SCALE and NELF

2011-10-04 Thread Kostas Koudaras

 Guys,

I need to know what we will be doing for both. I heard that some
people might have already started planning stuff for SCALE. Since they
reached out to me, I like to go again, but I before I step into
anything I like to know what has been talked about.

 Chuck,

There is no formal organizing going on at the moment for SCaLE.   The
only things were that Manu was going to send out a notice to others a
month ago to send in their papers, and at the last meeting on Thursday,
SCaLE was included in a list mentioning upcoming events we want to
 attend.

One thing I want to point out.  We spent a boatload of money going to
SCaLE last year, and one of the reasons for that was to shore up support
for openSUSE in Southern California.  When Jos and I initially planned
the SCaLE budget, we viewed it as an investment and one that hopefully
meant we would not have to continue shipping people to SCaLE and can
rely on local ground support.   I'm glad to know now that we have 4
people in the region who can support SCaLE and give openSUSE awesome
recognition once again.  This is an improvement over the past several
years when we continually shipped people to SCaLE.

I would strongly encourage reaching out to these people, Tony Su already
indicated he would go there, and asking them to organize the booth.
This would keep our expenses to a minimum  (just put them up in a hotel
since they all live at least 90 minutes drive away) and our investment
would effectively have paid for itself.

However, anyone and everyone is free to go as well.  But in terms of
funding, if anyone requires it, will need to be approved through the
Ambassador Travel Sponsorship program.  Granted this particular program
needs to be ironed out a bit, but I guarantee you it will within the
 next few weeks.

Well the terms of funding are a bit stuck in who can get this funding
and in what terms, but my opinion is that Chuck and Tony (I don't know
who the other guys are) fill the requirments since they have proven to
the community and the ambassador program that they are hard working
men. So my proposal is, and that is only if Manu has no problem with
that, to get those guys the funding they need, so that this reason
won't delay their effords, so on my side they should make a budget and
send it to Jos.
Because the Funding program in not over yet that does not mean in any
way that people who want to do something can't apply for it.

Also, I have been reached out by North East Linux Fest for Apirl 7th.
They want us there.  There going to be a lot of school going to like
MIT, Havard, and others in that area.

I would certainly hope to see some growth in the Northeast region.  We
simply don't have strong support there.   In the previous NELF, I was
informed that the attendance was expected to be rather low, and thus I
couldn't see a justification for sending some folks there in terms of
dollars.   However, it sounds like, from what you're saying, attendance
is expected to grow this year, and thus it would make excellent sense to
send some folks to NELF and shore up local support, thus creating an
investment similar to what we did at SCaLE.  We're doing well on the
west coast, we need more on the East coast now.  :-)

Also, I am now on the board for the South East Linux Fest board as
their community manager, I am going to be putting together a list of
user group here in the US, I wanted to ask, what ever happen to the
list we were working to send stuff too? I would like to add the groups
to it. I like to do press kits for 12.1 to these groups, I am thinking
that would be a great way for more people to use us. I will need
someone there to help me, it going to be in Atlanta maybe will tell
 more later.

Congratulations for your appointment to SELF board.  I know SELF will
have a valued member on its board and one who is clearly dedicated and
committed to this type of work.  It's people like you that make us
confident that openSUSE growth will happen on the East Coast without a
 doubt!   :-)

Thanks for your hard work Chuck!

I gave it some thought and my recommendation for the dates is:

Ambassadors Collaboration day (Ambassador Support Review) - 24/8
Starting at 7:00(UTC/GMT) ending at 25/8 at 7:00(UTC/GMT)
Marketing Collaboration Day (Marketing Materials Review) - 1/9
Starting at 7:00(UTC/GMT) ending at 2/9 at 7:00(UTC/GMT)
PR and Social Media Collaboration day (PR and Social Media Review) -
8/9 Starting at 7:00(UTC/GMT) ending at 9/9 at 7:00(UTC/GMT)

It should last 24 hours so that everyone around the globe to have the
opportunity to participate.

We can have 2 of 3 people for every day in 12 hour or 8 hour duty,
that will be depended on the people who will apply for the job. My
recommendation is not to apply for more than one day as moderators.
The moderators of each day need to make a common report for each day
with what the day succeed. Of course nobody says that you cannot blog
about it separately ;-)
Please apply only if you are 100% sure that you can do that. When we
will have all people for the Collaboration days we will split and work
as teams for each day so that it can be properly prepared.

In case that nobody has any objection on the dates we should write
some articles about it on the next days and spread it around, anyone
who can help on that please step up.

I am in for the Ambassadors day for the 1st shift either that is 12 or
8 hours, I can also write an article on news about that.

I think that should be all, please fell free to add anything so that
we will make this even better than the previous Collaboration days

[opensuse-marketing] Collaboration Days

2011-08-03 Thread Kostas Koudaras
Hi people
12.1 will be out on November and November is closer that you can
imagine when it comes to the amount of work that should be done by
then. So in order to reach out I propose to repeat Collaboration days.
We made great amount of work there and with great quality.

We had 3 collaboration days:
1 for ambassadors(Ambassador Support Review)
1 for Marketing(Marketing Materials Review)
1 for PR and Social Media (PR and Social Media Review)

So in order for this to be a reality we need people to organize this.
 - Firstly we need people to volunteer themselves for be online on IRC
for at least 12 hours as moderators for those days. In order for
everybody around the Globe to attend we make the Collaboration days a
24 hour Event. I am of course in for the first 12 hour stand for
ambassadors day.
 - We need people to organize and create the wiki pages that we will
need about the collaboration days
 - We need all of you to participate on those days because as previous
Collaboration days proved, anybody can help no matter how experienced.

Last but not least, it is important to do that before the Marketing
Hackfest that is planned for 15th and 16th of September, so that we
could use the Collaboration days achievements there and plan a better
marketing campaign.

For those that are not familiar with this see the links bellow.

 Hello,

Regarding the deadline, it's good to know when the event takes place for
 the budget.
 A question-note I have is this:

In Greece we know the big events we'll apply. We don't know the exact
day though. We discuss it at our first ambassadors meeting. So the
person who will create the page where we can enter the event, have to
make space for the month and not the exacd date of the month and also
how many will attend to the booth or talk.

What about smaller events that people invite us? An example here was the
event we went a day before Christmas in Florina. We decided to go about
a week before. So regarding the timelines you give us, we had to know
 that on October 1st.

Regarding the type of the events or talks, I think more important is the
booth staff because we talk to people about our project.

Let's be realistic: We have limited money and thus won't be able to fund each
and every event - and we need to find our way with the setup.

We can reserve some money for ad-hoc events - but the money Jos currently has
vanishes at the end of a fiscal quarter, so we cannot keep it for ever and
thus prefer to spend everything instead of money vanishing...

Stathis this goes to you mainly, small events like that in Florina( it
cost us around 50 Euros each attendant) can be covered by us since we
do it for the fun of participation and for the road-trip ;-)
Those money I think should go to bigger events, not that I leave those
events out necessary, but if something is to be decided quick I prefer
consume my time at thinking on how I am going to do a good appearance
and have fun than to think about money. Either you can(have the time
and money) to do it, either you don't.

Anyway I wish that we have only 10-20 active (on events) ambassadors
because of the money and now that some money are available to see 153
really active ambassadors and I promise that I will pay all events I
will attend from my pocket, but I bet that the main reason is mostly
time.

Now it is better to think how to organize things at this point and
then we talk about details and exceptions. We all need to work harder
because we have a great project in our hands and our job is to show it
to the world.

That is for now
Sorry for my probably bad English but I was working the last 18 hours

[opensuse-marketing] Re: [opensuse-ambassadors] Special Announcement - Ambassador Travel Funding

2011-07-28 Thread Kostas Koudaras
Well I have like 2.000 questions ;-)
I will start with a few that might answer many other questions.

1) When this program starts? If it already started we are a bit late
for the first deadline, should we arrange an ambassador meeting to
decide which events we will attend until the 31 of October?
2) Do we have a list of events that ambassadors MUST attend? We
probably need to create a list in the wiki with dates of future events
until May of 2012,right?
3) Priority is a great subject here, how do the team define who
ambassador has priority on going to events?
4) I suppose for an ambassador to attend on an event he/she should
apply for a talk about the community, right? Can ambassadors attend
events that won't be able to give a talk?
5) Timing is also another great subject, those who apply earlier for
an event have priority over others?
6) If we have to choose among 3 local events(that are cheaper) versus
1 global event, that have the same cost, what do we choose?
7) If one quarter we have fewer events and we don't spend the whole
budget can we use those money on the next quarter?
8) Are registration fee's included and is it possible for SUSE to give
ambassadors (if available) free access on events so that the whole
event will cost less?

1992 questions left for later ;-)

2011/7/28 Bryen M. Yunashko susero...@bryen.com:
 Dear awesome Ambassadors and Marketeers,

We are very excited to announce a new program for our Ambassadors to be
able to travel to important events in their regions and promote
openSUSE.  Over the past few months, Jos and I lobbied and recently
received approval from Attachmate to create this program.  Each quarter,
the Ambassador Team will be allowed to reimburse up to $5,000 (USD) for
 transportation/hotel expenses.

 How it works:

 * At least one month prior to the start of each quarter, ambassadors
discuss and make a proposal for expenses to events and other promotion
 opportunities globally.

 *  The Ambassadors will determine the long term event strategy; deciding
which events should be supported with these funds. Jos and I will
provide any advice or encouragement needed throughout the process.

 * Jos has final approval of any expenses.  Ambassadors will be
reimbursed up to 80% of their personal expenses.

 * Each quarter is as follows:
 August 1 - October 31  (Proposal Deadline - July 1)
 November 1 - Jan 31 (Proposal Deadline - October 1)
 February 1 - April 30  (Proposal Deadline - Jan 1)
 May 1 - July 31 (Proposal Deadline - April 1)

 Why we are doing this?

 We have two purposes here:

 A)  Tto empower the Ambassador Team to strategically develop a plan of
action and determine for itself where it can make the most successes.

 B) To develop a long-term strategy and schedule.  This will improve the
flow of funding in a quick manner and also help us to determine what
materials and other preparations are needed for the entire year.

While this is a quarterly program, we encourage the Ambassadors to think
long term (up to 1 year) and identify as many potential events globally.
This will help us to better allocate our limited resources. (For
example, we are already out of Promo DVDs currently.  Long-term planning
would help us better anticipate our printing needs.)   It will be up to
you to determine how best to discuss/document/propose actions.

Thanks and feel free to ask any questions you may have!

Awesome idea. Make a quick how-to on a wiki page and get an article to

Ok I can make a how to immediately but I am wondering where in the
wiki to put it.
After that an article will be on the way :-)

And how about ANY openSUSE person do this instead of 'only' the
 ambassadors?

I agree partially mostly because of an idea I just had. I propose to
take shots from Ambassadors to make a 2-3-4 minute video as an add and
then let's challenge all people with a contest to create a home video
calling people to the conference and give some kind of a prize(a Geeko
plush or something...) to the one that will have the more views on
YouTube by lets say 11 of September. Because of the contest people
maybe will try harder to promote their video shot. That way we can win
the promotion we want and the one who made the video a prize ;-).

Then we put em on the openSUSE youtube channel and show them on the
 openSUSE website at random :D

 thanks

Just made a sample video from my mobile(http://youtu.be/iPB9_teC-4M)it
is only in Greek so...
I think it would be more fancy, instead of saying the same think once
in English and once in our Native language to insert Subtitles with
the English text.
What do you think about that?
Jdd is that doable?
Allan, yes we could do that we will just leave out word like 2011 and

2011-07-21 Thread Kostas Koudaras
2011/7/21 Bryen M. Yunashko susero...@bryen.com:
Greetings folks on the Ambassadors, Artwork and Marketing Teams!

As you know, the CFP for openSUSE Conference deadline is coming very
close this weekend.  As part of the CFP Committee, I have reviewed
proposed sessions and saw some missing stuff so far, which I think we
should consider.  I have created four proposals tonight though I have
not attached any moderators to them yet.  (I wanted to get them in
 before we miss the deadline.)

 BoF Proposals:

 openSUSE Ambassadors Discussion:
A BoF to bring together our openSUSE Ambassadors and discuss strategies
 for the coming year.
(Manu and Kostas, do you wish to lead this session?)

I proposed a few weeks ago a BoF which I will do with Manu with title:
Ambassador Program: Current status, potential changes and
improvements. I think it is very similar with the one you propose so
it think what you are talking about is covered.
;-)
If you think otherwise please let us know.

 Organizing our Artwork Repositories:
A look at the current state of our openSUSE Artwork GIT repository and
discussing ideas about ways to improve availability and access of
 artwork for everyone.
(I propose one person from Marketing and one from Artwork to co-moderate
 this BoF.  Any volunteers?)

 Hacksession Proposals:

 Marketing Team - Multimedia Planning
Let's storyboard some ideas for cool openSUSE videos that we can use at
events and online.  In this hacksession, we will organize our thoughts
and create basic storyboards for videos and podcasts
(Several of us have had some excellent ideas over the years but we never
moved forward on it.  Its time we came together and put those ideas to
good use.   JDD, would you like to co-moderate this with me?)

 openSUSE 12.1 Artwork
Review of artwork for 12.1 promotion and 12.1 Desktops
(I'm not exactly sure what is needed here, but I put it in anyway.  Does
anyone from Artwork Team wish to moderate this hacksession?)

If any of you have ideas for other topics, *please* submit them soon.
It is better for the CFP team to have many topics to review than too
few.  And I know many of you have awesome ideas.  I see a few already
 from some of you!

 Thanks!

be deleted because the width is a half inch shorter and the length is
almost 2 inches shorter than what the existing layout calls for. The
reason for the current size is to fit all the content.

Please note that I mostly asked for A4 based on my (possible
mis-)conception that in the EU and much of the rest of the world, US
Letter paper might be harder to come by or print on. I simply do not know
for sure if this is true or not. I checked a few online printshops in NL,
they all only offered A4. I suspect that IF letter is possible, it'll be
  more expensive.

If we shorten the text a bit, maybe an A4 version with the links added to
one of the two text panels (or both) could be used. This means we remove
the panel with the links (Get Connected) instead of the text ones. Ideas?

For now, I'd say let's start with having a Brochure in Letter format. I
will try and shorten the texts so we can have it translated in the future
but the text for the english one is fine as it is.

If the other marketeers agree, let's consider this thing final so we can
  print it in the USA!

 Hi all,

Can I get some of your thoughts on this? Should I print 2000 of these in
the USA and start writing a shorter text to be translated in Spanish,
 Portugese, German etc?

Ok, if nobody answers, I'll just decide. Once Karl has made the changes
suggested by Henne, we'll print 2000 doublesided flyers and 800 posters like
the ones we had at Scale ('why is openSUSE cool').

Sorry For some reason I lost this e-mail :-(
For what is worth I agree, just send me the source file to translated
in Greek, although I am not sure if a translation would be a better
solution that the actual English text since the translation of cool in
Greek is a bit weird.
I still use the ones we had in Scale, though the colors fade out a bit,
people really attracted by it in the events we made.

Should we remove the panel with links for the A4 version? Or one of the
 other two panels?

Let's remove the one with links and put just an openSUSE link somewhere else.

Here's a link to the current brochure if you want to have a look:
 http://linux.ioda.net/openSUSE/git/opensuse-artwork/flyers/

Nice to have this story on wiki. Maybe Sascha, as founder, can help with

On the Education side, Jame Tremblay was the founder. The user page

Let's ask Lars for Education, he can name others for sure ;)

So is anyone interested on doing that?
If not I am volunteering for an interview with Lars, all I need is Lars e-mail.

 1.  openSUSE Conference marketing campaign

2011-06-06 Thread Kostas Koudaras
Hey, great idea
Don't forget about Evergreen
In this month's magazine 'Linux Inside' I wrote an article about
Evergreen and Tumbleweed
I think I could write something about Evergreen as an article for News
if you are interested and I could do that in a short notice.
Also I now write about YaST, also we could write about KIWI, WebYaST,
that I can think for now.
On YaST we could write separate articles for separate YaST add ons,
such as the FTP server add-on.
I still owe the translation in Engish of my article about KIWI, but
this could take a while due to it's great length.
Also what about interviews from people of the projects? Not like the
openSUSE people ones but interviews in depth, analyzing and getting
more information than a wiki page can give.
That is for now

The title must be weird. Do we do more than OBS and Tumbleweed?

Actually, yes, we DO! Recent examples include us joining world IPv6 day, the
kernel.opensuse.org page and there are a bunch of android apps too :D

I would say it's worth pointing this out to people once in a while. AJ agreed
but he doesn't like writing so tasked me to do it ;-)

Now I need some other ideas besides what I mentioned - some cool stuff being
done in openSUSE. Just fire ideas away! Anything goes :D

Help in writing and/or reviewing would of course be appreciated... :D

2011/5/22 Pieter De Decker pdedec...@gmail.com:
The latest version of the posters and slides are now available in the
 opensuse-artwork repository under a CC 3.0 BY-NC-SA license. I tried
to compress the material by tar'ing everything, but if you're gonna
download all four packages it's still a 50MB+ download. That's because
I wanted to use high-resolution artwork (where available) to allow for
 some scaling.

 https://gitorious.org/opensuse-artwork/opensuse-artwork/blobs/master/posters/pdf/posters.tar.gz

Feel free to translate the material into your native language using
Scribus 1.4.0rc1. If you're still having trouble with the files, let
me know. I'll look into it when I have some free time, so it may take
 a while.

 2011/5/21 Pieter De Decker pdedec...@gmail.com

Alright... I have upconverted all Scribus files to v1.4.0rc1 files,
rewritten some text and collected all necessary fonts and color profiles for
each file. I have the poster and slide sources along with their exported
PDFs ready to go. If Jos would be so kind to provide me a Git account and a
folder in the artwork repository, I can upload them for everyone to use :)
If I release the material under a Creative Commons 3.0 BY-NC-SA license,
will that be loose enough to allow everyone to create their local
translations and to use them to promote openSUSE?
I should point out that the backgrounds on some of the posters/slides are
below the recommended minimum DPI, but I don't have the time to search for
other suitable background images right now. Also, the YaST logo that I used
is only 256x256 pixels, so this may produce less than satisfactory results
if printed. Does anyone know where I can find an SVG version of the YaST
 logo?
 Pieter

 Hi all,

I would like to put them in git*, how about you getting access so you
can update them if/when you like?
Yes, I'd like that! :-) I will fix the sources and add them to the
repository for translation as soon as I have some time. That may take
a couple of weeks, I'm afraid.

The licensing IS a bit of an issue - it's really helpful if we are able
to translate flyers etc and for that, artwork needs to be GPL like and
come with sources... Any way we can convince you to release the source?
I've already released the sources. The Box.net link must be somewhere
on the mailing list, but I'll put the fixed sources in the Git repo
when I have the time. As for the licensing: I've included a text file
in the posters/slides ZIP that collects the licensing information, but
I don't know if the material's licenses are compatible with the GPL
license. Is there an intellectual property expert in the room?

We don't have it translated due to some problems with the source files
Are you unable to open them or does the source render incorrectly on
your computer? I'll look into it when my work load quiets down.

The Greek openSUSE community has united to present this two-day
conference in Patras. There, we met people from other communities,
discussed and promoted openSUSE and FOSS.

The community participated at the conference with the following
presentations and parallel events:

Saturday, May 7,

Presentation by Bruno Friedmann, for the openSUSE project and its future.

Presentation by George Bratsos for the release of openSUSE 11.4 and
the new technologies and innovations brought by the distribution.

Presentation by Kostas Koudaras who presented the Greek openSUSE
community and their actions, the project dealt with and the events it
has organized.

Presentation by George Koutsikos, for the Enlightenment Project.

Presentation by Athanasios Elias Rousinopoulos about a subproject of
openSUSE, the openSUSE Medical, which contains tools used by the
branch of medicine.

Presentation by Efstathios Iossifidis about the Greek Gnome community
and the release of Gnome 3 and the new technologies and innovations.

Lighting Talks by members of the Greek openSUSE community about
sub-projects with which we participate, but also things that we do all
together.
Introducing YaST (Efstathios Agrapidis),
Add / Remove software in openSUSE (Athanasios - Elias Rousinopoulos),
Weekly News - The Greek way (Efstathios Agrapidis),
Evergreen Project (George Tsiapaliokas),
Tumbleweed Project (George Bratsos),
KDE Akokandi (Antonis Tsiapaliokas),
Guidelines for mariners, using openSUSE Community tools (Efstathios Iosifidis).

Sunday, May 8,

Presentation by Efstathios Agrapidis for the revolutionary OBS
platform that solves packaging problems.

Presentation by Efstathios Iossifidis on how we can create an
openSUSE distribution with SUSE Studio.

Workshop by Efstathios Agrapidis to create .deb and .rpm packages with OBS.

The openSUSE community booth was one of the largest in the
organization and except the dvds, posters,, flyers, cheat-sheets etc.
we co-hosted the booth of the Greek community of Gnome, the
Enlightenment Project and the amazing people of other communities who
were there to assist and promote their favorite project and FOSS in
general.

On Saturday evening the openSUSE community had a Release party for the
distribution of openSUSE 11.4 at the hotel where he resided. The party
achieved its purpose because, apart from the cake we ate and the beer
we drunk, we came closer to people from other communities such as the
Ubuntu, Slackware, Gentoo, FreeBSD and OS-arena. At the end of the
night Red Hat people visited our party, with whom we shared the same
roof (hotel). :P

The workshop ended with a farewell message from the organizers of
Fosscomm whom we thank for the wonderful organization even though the
misfortunes of the second day which left us without power and wifi
internet access for the most part.

Thanks for the quick response on IRC. I had just gotten IRC set up on
 the netbook when you appeared.

The information you gave makes the following even more appropriate.

Here's what I sent to the Fest Organizers yesterday...

In several volunteer assignment categories, there is a question about
which distro to use. The time that students could spend researching
distros and debating their merits could be put to better use
 elsewhere.

In a message to his student assistants, Jakob wrote:
I personally like OpenSUSE and Gnome desktop, but it's your call.

On Monday, I am going to instruct students to use OpenSUSE/Gnome.
(Fred, this doesn't apply to the Tutorium. That's your call.)

 Rationale:
 * BTC students are not generally knowledgeable about distros and their
relative advantages to Jane Citizen, average user.
 * OpenSUSE/Gnome is easy to use, solid and visually appealing. (Gak,
what about KDE? Try not to think about it B^)
 * OpenSUSE is a sponsor.
 * OpenSUSE is an exhibitor.
 * Several senior level speakers represent OpenSUSE.
 * James Mason provides local presence, support and advocacy.
 * The installation media is well-designed and attractive.
 * OpenSUSE has superb online references.
 * Installation, updates, package installation are simple, and well
 supported by the online references.
 * All of these reflect well on LFNW.

Javier has created a nice openSUSE 11.4 poster, you can find it here:

more artwork can be found in that git repository, of course.

There is a template for 11.4 presentations, I can't find it in Git

It is also not on http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Presentations - can

After the weekend I will do that along with some other presentations

2011/4/6 Andreas Jaeger a...@novell.com:
The board in our project meeting asked me to discuss with you and come up
with an idea on how to recognize contributors to openSUSE (say thanks to
them), so here's my email that I sent initially to the board and let's
discuss what we can and want to do.

Basically, I seek a fair process and one that's easy to implement and
 execute. ;)

I've spend quite some time thinking about this and discussing it and
therefore this email is a bit longer and list several options and ideas.

I already send the contributors on our existing list an email telling them
that we're not going to send them anything for now - but seek alternatives.
I got quite some positive feedback and have appended it at the end in
 anonymous form.

Btw. especially the marketing team is one of the teams that  I guess never
made it on the list of getting a box - and I consider this really unfair -
so let's find a fair process (or decide there is none and leave it). So,
don't ask my why you never before heard about it - this is especially a
reason to rethink the whole program and start it new from scratch and
that's why I need your combined wisdom,

 Andreas

 Background

In the past, Novell had a list of contributors to openSUSE. Novell
send them one openSUSE box product as thank you. That list has grown
over the last 15 years and includes upstream authors of some projects,
 beta testers and translators.

Right now that list contains around 300+ entries. Looking at the list of
contributors, I see that it is a pretty unfair selection of folks. There're
people in it, that haven't done anything for openSUSE 11.4 and there are
 people missing.

So, this whole concept of who gets a Thank you needs a reevaluation.

On top of that, we have sent out openSUSE Boxes in the past. With
openSUSE 11.3, this was a joint present by open-SLX and Novell, before
 it was Novell only.

The price of the box has increased (official selling price from 59 to
69 EU but we get them far cheaper) - and the shipment of a box world
wide is a logistics nightmare with doing the right thing to get them
through customs in a cheap way - and then shipment costs a lot as
 well.

Additionally, the collection of the email addresses is an error prone
 and time consuming process.

So, summing up the three different points, we're not going to send
contributor boxes out with openSUSE 11.4.

As usual, there's a but. I know some people look forward to them - and I
would  love to send out an individual Thank you to those who actually
 contributed.

 But this needs:
 * a light weight process
 * people that help with it
 * and an idea on what to do

Once we have that, I can go to my management (who urged me to seek
alternatives  with you - so Novell is interested in sponsoring, we just
need a good way!) and ask for sponsorship money.

 Goals
 =

Novell has done in the past the Contributor boxes as a way to say
thanks to contributors. openSUSE as community project depends on
contributors and this present was also an incentive for them.

Our goal is to thank openSUSE contributors for their participation in
openSUSE at the time of a distribution release. We want to recognize
contribution in a fair and objective way.

Where does contribution happen in openSUSE?
 * bug reports
 * fixing bugs
 * packaging
 * development
 * system administration
 * user help in forums/mailing lists/IRC
 * marketing
 * translation
 * ...

Question: Do we want to recognize all kind of contributions or only
specific ones?  Some of that you can easily be scriptable - others
not, and that's the part that will lead to another members committee
and discussions. But only giving it a subset won't work really either
 - so, what do we want?

Note that only giving it a subset won't work really either - so, what

 - and we will for sure forgot to ask some teams to nominate their team members
 ;-(

That's why Jos proposed to use as list all openSUSE members - it's self-

Yeap but on the other hand there are people that are not members(yet

did not contributed on 11.4.

Re: [opensuse-marketing] setting up a mailing list

2011-04-01 Thread Kostas Koudaras
What I am going to say have much love inside them because you know you
are all my friends.
We have ambassadors in 47 countries which means that we have users of
openSUSE at 47 countries at least so making 47 different local mailing
lists would be great,if those ML's had traffic
If they don't those are practically useless.

Now I will tell you what I made so that you see some things a bit more clear.
I asked a local mailing list when I thought I could work with it. I
asked a second one about translation when it became clear we needed
one.
The first question is if you really need one. By need I mean post
there almost daily and have members communicate and help each other
and inform people. Having a ML just to have 2-3 mails per month and in
a language that you can do it in another ML, the way I see it, and
think about it, might cause some problems to the local community you
are making the list to support.Consider that you must have people to
support all levels of users(at least most of them).

Also think about all that confusing things Bryen said ;-) and how many
local ML can confuse users.

Having many lists make the Global community lose important feedback
and honestly that is the reason we tell Greek people if they have a
problem they can explain in English, write at opensuse-project and not
in opensuse-el since others users can benefit in various ways with
answers they will get.

Now about what Chuck said about a local event,I think that even if you
had an opensuse-USA list, states are so big that this problem would
not be solved.
Also don't underestimate the help a Greek or a French or a Belorussian
can give you in a local event in the states, more ideas are never bad.
No one tells you how to run things, bottom line you always do what you
want, but having more ideas if you have a well-structured way of
thinking can never be harmful.
I am not against local ML, on the contrary I am a big supporter but
only if think it can really change things to the better and only if
you really think that the existing lists don't serve you they
desirable way.
Bottom line on that, if you think a ML can help your local communities
go for it but have in mind that it can also weaken a local community
if it does not work well, I know a couple of examples.
I would suggest to start where we started and that is an IRC channel,
announce it on the project ML and then talk with people there if you
really need a ML.
If you all agree to that go for it.

That is my opinion and I certainly don't want to play the smart-ass here :-)
Think about it

This was my intention. A mailing list for users, not just Ambassadors.
We are all active in one way or another.

Does it justify the additional overhead placed on our beloved mail admin,
Henne (even if he says he doesn't care?)

I didnt realize that administering a list would be a lot of hassle
 (I've never done it).
We could start a Google or Yahoo group and manage it ourselves.

Alternatively I guess I could keep a list of contacts and ask people
individually if it's ok to CC them whenever we want to ask if someone
wants media, is going to an event and so on. It's hardly efficient,
 though.

It's cute but is clearly derivative of the openSUSE Geeko logo, which
we are not permitted to change.

It also exists in the openSUSE wiki I think, I found that there and
had it as a wallpaper for a while actually, if I find the wiki page I
will send you the link.

On IRC I saw Pascal Bleser and master Bryen talk about webpin2...
Pretty cool! I wonder if there is any update on it? I think it's
worth a nice article on omgsuse.com!

If you think so, I attached a start for the webpin2 part which needs
the latest status from Pascal and otherwise is just based on
Pascal's awesome blogs about it and some searching contemplating
 of mine :D

Who's up for kicking Pascal to add his latest insights and gving this
to Tyler to put on omgSUSE.com?

And then continueing on this path, finding another cool openSUSE
 thing?

 Love,
 Jos

We really need to keep beating the drum on 11.4, I just saw that in the
last week openSUSE has sunk from 5th to 6th place on distrowatch.com :(

The calm before the Second Storm ;-)
People now are playing with 11.4 and after so many downloads we had in
the start of the release it has a logic.
The lizards are still marching...

So, who steps up to relay me the results? Bryen, seems like your thing?

 Cheers and thanks,

Sure, I'll step up on this and get cracking on it this weekend.  I'll
confer with the team on any outstanding stuff that needs to be clarified
before we send you the final list with ample time to meet your deadline.

Thanks for giving us the heads-up on this.

 More soon.
