Hi. When on a website, if I click a link for a sound file, the track begins
to play in Windows Media Player, but I can't find any way of downloading the
track rather than djust streaming it over the net. Does anyone know how I
can do this? Thanks in advance. Tracey.

Wheeew! I finally found it! I knew I'd stumbled on the easy way to compile
and order files in nero, but as usual, I found it bashing and crashing
around and later, never remembered how I did it. But anyway, once you've
selected a new compilation and have set it to do an audio cd, tab to where
it says "tree view" and select your hard drive or whichever drive contains
the stuff you want on the cd.
Then, tab to "new". Hit alt so you're in the menus and right-arrow to edit.
Down arrow to "add" and you can now shift-tab back to treeview and pick the
folder where the files resice and keep hitting enter til you get to the
list of files.
Then, pick each file in the order you wantum to appear on the cd and tab
forward to "add". Keep doing that til done and tab to "finish." Now you're
ready to burn the thing.

Re: nero or cd burning question

2004-11-28 Thread mimi
Marty, I have had CD's not play properly
and had to reburn the mp3 music on a
ifferent brand disc which works better.
The cheaper the disc, you lose data on
the cheaper ones after some time. There
is no setting I can find in Nero that
will fix this. When I disc does not
burn successfully, or completely, what
happens is you have some dead tracks,
and the dead disc is referred to in my
circle as a "coaster." You can either
use it as a coaster or throw it away.
Some brands are much better than others
at holding our data. I'd stick with
Imation from Office Max or Regata from
Radio Shack. Something that is a more
reliable brand and will work every time.
The cheaper the disc, well, it's like
buying the cheapest cassette, and you
know what happens there: bad quality
sound and tapes very uneven in
recording.

Also, I have Nero set to play a trumpet
sound when a disc is burned successfuly;
a dragon when it is not. When the
dragon sounds, I just throw the disc
out, because I know there is nothing I
can do to fix it. You burn CDR's once.
Rewriteable discs, you can burn for a
limited amount of time. Some CDRW discs
I bought, I found some bad ones in the
pack, as well. There is no way for a
blind person to tell when a bad one's
coming up until it is burned. Yes, it's
annoying!

The other thing I had to do is slow my
burner speed down. 52x is too fast for
my processor. When I talked to someone
at Radio Shack about this, that's when
they told me this. I thought that could
be the trouble, but had to have someone
else confirm it. Radio Shack sells
computers, too. I guess you did not
know this. Also, if you are ever in the
market for a new computer in the future,
why not ring Excell here in Sacramento
about it when you're ready? They sell
computers to the Society for the Blind
here, and won't treat you like a dummy.
In fact, I am thinking of getting them
to fix me up with my next system. You
remember Excel, don't you? And, of
course, that's where Curt got his
computer. I'm sorry my answer baffles
you in some way, but I have to tell you
that not all CD's are created equal. I
stay away from real cheap ones, even if
the deal sounds good. I'd reather pay a
little more for good blank discs I can
rely on year after year. It's very
crucial to me.

Winamp and Ogg Vorbis

2004-11-28 Thread Peter Scanlon
I find that I cannot rip into Ogg Vorbis format with Winamp. I can play
such files but not rip from CD in that format.

After being assured by others that one could do this with Winamp, I checked
the "Ripping Preferences". I find a list of 4 formats and no Ogg Vorbis.

Wav Output
MP3 Encoder v1.2
MP4 AAC 1.0
Raw AAC 1.0
If I click on the "Wav Output Options" button I get a list of 8 pre-sets
one of wifch is Ogg vorbis". However if I tab accross to the "Attributes"
list I can slect attribute but I still end up with a wav file.

I found a plug in for Winamp and Ogg Vorbis on the net but it says it is
for Ver 2x of Winamp. Should it work?

Any clues.

Re: nero or cd burning question

2004-11-28 Thread RQJ
Hi Mimi, and Marty,
Best to stick with name brand media, and burn at the slowest speed for best
results.
Here is something interesting ,I found out.
Some burners work best with certain media, and sometimes, the manufacturer
of the burner will say which brands.
Although this is more the exception than the rule.
Here is what I have done to get the right cd's.
I started out buying 5 packs of cd's until I hit on one that gave good
results with my burner.
Fortunately, I only had to buy 2 different ones, and ended up with Memorex.
There is a website which has more imformation about cd's, but I can't
remember the name,
however, you can get to it from the following website.

Re: Nero problem

2004-11-28 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Shirley.

In answer to your question on whether you can burn a compilation CD using
Nero but taking the tracks directly from CD's rather than your hard drive,
well, yes you can. However, this is not recommended because what you're
doing here is using the track at once method of burning. With this method,
the laser pauses after each track and then has to engage again when ready
for the next track. Best results are obtained when using disc at once for
music CD's and this can only be achieved by copying a whole CD or by burning
a compilation of tracks from your hard drive. Track at once is only
recommended when burning data CD's.

Regards.

another Cool Edit question.

2004-11-28 Thread Chrissie
Hi Folks Can someone advise me please. I'm trying to work in
multi-track mode in Cool Edit. I have a 2-track .wav file which I bring
into the multi-track feature of the program. that goes on tracks 1 and 2.
Okay, so I go down with the mouse to track 3 and put that on record. So far
so good. Track 3 records just fine. So I think to myself, I'll go down
with the mouse to track 4 and do the same thing, but oh no, what it does is
goes over track 3. So I try, thinking that 3 and 4 may be counted as a
stereo pair, I go down to 5, and, behold, the same thing happens, it records
over track 3. Where am I going wrong?

many thanks for any help with this.

Chrissie

Alternative to total recorder?

2004-11-28 Thread Danielle Cleary
Hi All,

I am currently using total recorder version 4 and think that it's a fairly
good piece of software, due to the fact that it records direct streaming
from the internet as opposed to recording all output from the sound card.
However, I am wondering if anyone out there knows of an alternative program
that will do the same thing? The reason I ask is that I have found that it
is clashing with skype. I can not use skype at all unless I uninstall total
recorder. Seeing as I use total recorder every day at some point,
uninstalling and re-installing is incredibly tiresome and I'd like to find a
way around this if possible.

If anyone can help me with this at all, I'd be very glad to hear from you.

Thanks,

Danielle

Re: nero or cd burning question

2004-11-28 Thread Marty Rimpau
Hi, mimi, the frustration is, that this disk I got in the mail is the
third disk where it either A., doesn't work, which happened with one of
the four disks, or, not all the files play on the disk, or, if they
start, they cut off, and I don't want to be in a position where I have
a disk where even 99 of the 100 files play fine, but the last one cuts
off, or, doesn't play when I press enter, because I'm still on the
list, and it is now apparent, that the person volunteering to help me
out, buys his cd's in bulk, and is content to throw ten of the disks in
a batch of 100 away, for example, but I have never had a cd burner, and
have no bench mark to compare things with, and so when the person says,
I'll burn you another, I'll burn you another, over and over again, I
have to ask, and sorry for the rant, but, how many disks do we go
through, before finding a good disk that's perfect? I am prepared, if
I have to, to spend about 50 cents a disk for a music cdr, and I
understand that tdk, memorex, and foogy are good, particularly tdk, but
this person, didn't tell me, until last Tuesday night, that he didn't
have the money to spend on premium disks that wouldn't fail, and while
that might be fine, I at least think that the quality of the disks
you're burning should be good enough, where, if they work on your
machine, they'll work on any machine that plays them, hope this is not
an unrealistic expectation, but when you've never had a disk not work,
you wonder.

Re: nero or cd burning question

2004-11-28 Thread Tom Kaufman
I'm not sure if this is in keeping with the subject line here. But I just
had something happen that's..well..kind of along this same line; a friend of
mine burned a CD for me..one that he had bought. It won't play on my CD
player that is hooked to my stereo receiver; for that matter..it doesn't
seem to want to play in the CD player in the bomb box! After checking this
out..I discovered that the CD he used is a CDRW! Does this account for why
it didn't burn correctly? The CD will play on my computer..but doesn't seem
to want to play on my other CD players. I have also heard that..how
slow..or how fast..you burn a CD can have a baring on whether a CD will play
on a conventional CD player. Insidently..the CD player I have back here is
an old Sony that I got for Christmas in either 90 or 91. I'm told that this
can make a difference. Is this correct?

Hi.
Sorry for the repetition but try this:
Using Nero to burn a compilation from tracks stored on your hard drive

Start Nero from the desktop or programs menu.

1.. You can configure Nero to present the new compilation dialogue in
preferences. To do this:
1.. Press Alt + F to open the File Menu.
2.. Arrow down to Preferences and press enter
3.. Press spacebar on the first checkbox to check start with New
compilation
4.. Tab to the OK button and press spacebar to save the settings.
1.. Now when you start Nero, you will see the new compilation dialogue
and
you will be placed on the multisession tab.
2.. Press shift + tab until you reach the combo box that allows you to
select what task you wish to perform. This will usually be defaulted to
CD-ROM which is used for data compilations.
3.. Now choose the format of the CD you would like to burn. Select Audio
from the radio buttons if you want a CD that will play in standard CD
players or select Data if you want a CD that will be used to contain MP3
tracks that will only be played in an MP3 player. Tab to Next and press
enter.
4.. Press enter on the New button and the compilation window will be in
focus.
5.. Use the keystroke windows + E to start Windows Explorer.
6.. Locate the tracks you wish to add to your compilation by browsing the
folders on your hard drive where they reside.
7.. For selected tracks, use the keystroke control + C to copy them to
the
clipboard.
8.. Press alt + tab to bring the Nero compilation window back into focus.
9.. Use the keystroke control + V to paste the tracks into the
compilation.
10.. Repeat steps 7 through 10 until you have added all of the tracks you
want to include in your compilation.
11.. You may now want to reorder the tracks in your compilation. To do
this, use the keystroke control + X to cut the track to the keyboard then
use the up and down arrow keys to locate the track that you wish to
immediately follow the track you've just cut to the clipboard. Use the
keystroke control + V to paste the track into the compilation and it will
then appear at this point. NOTE: this reordering is only possible if you
have chose audio format and not possible for data format.
12.. When you are ready to burn your compilation, close all running
applications so that Nero is not competing for your computer's resources.
13.. To burn the compilation, press alt + F to open the file menu and
then
press W to open the Burn dialogue.
14.. Tab to the Burn button and press enter.

2004-11-28 Thread Danielle Cleary
Hi Tom,

Yes, you are right in thinking that it will depend on how old the said cd
player is as to whether it will play the cd's. It tends to only be newer cd
players, in my experience from the year 2000 onward, and dvd players that
will play burned or copied cds.

Re: sending mp3 files

2004-11-28 Thread RQJ
Hi Charles,
You can e-mail the mp3 file as an attachment.
If you are using Outlook Express,
1. open Outlook Express
2. go thru the process as you would for sending mail
3. press, alt I, for file attachment.
4. press enter, and then browse for the folder where the mp3 file is that
you want to send.
5. arrow to the file name, then tab to the attach button, and press enter.
Now when you send your message, the file will go along with it.
Note, this is just a copy of the file, the original stays on the hard drive.

Re: Alternative to total recorder?

Hi Danielle,
Total recorder will also record from other audio sources as well the
internet.
You can also record streaming audio, using most other recorders, although
Total recorder handles this function in a different manner.
If you could tell us what seems to be the conflict between Skype, and
TotalRecorder,
perhaps we could come up with a solution that would allow the 2 to co-exist
on your system and behave themselves. smile.

Subject: Alternative to total recorder?

2004-11-28 Thread RQJ
Hi Tom,
CDRW's, should be used for data disks only.
For burning audio disks, use CDR's.
Several factors come into play here,
if you want an audio disk to play on other devices other than your computer,
it should be burnt as an audio disk, the format is CDA.
This format will play on most CD audio devices, and some DVD players,
if the player supports that particular format.
Likewise, if you want to make an audio disk, with mp3's on it, this can be
done by simply burning a data disk,
using a CDR.
This type of disk will also play in other audio devices, as long as the
device supports that format.
No matter what type of disk you are burning, you should always select the
slowest speed avbailavle, make sure all other applications are shut down
before starting the burn process.
The reason for this, is because the burn process is processor intensive, no
matter what your processor speed is.
Computer activities, can be a little quirky at times, so you want to create
the best possible environment for creating CD's.
As I mentioned in a previous response to another question,
you should do a little testing to find out what brand of disk gives you the
best consistent results.
I don't mind spendingmore on good quality disks, because it is cheaper than
throwing away a lot of poor quality disks.

Richard Justice

Re: nero or cd burning question

2004-11-28 Thread Brian Olesen
Hi Tom,
First of all it's essential that the cd is closed at the end of the burning
session. This has to be done with audio CDs. Many older cd players cannot
play cd-rw.

The other thing about burning speed is more a rumer then some scientific
proof. What is more importent is you have to get some disks that works good
with your specific brand of cd recorder. For example tdk are good with
plextor. Philips are bad for liteon and so on. One importent rule though is
not to burn at a faster speed then the disks are certified for. Is the cd
burner just a few years old and has a very dirty linze the thing about
slowing may or may not help. I've had quite a few burners now since 1995 and
i'm pretty sure I know what i'm talking about. grin
The cd brand not fitting the burner can course you much more trouble then
any thing else.

Best regards
Brian

If you have a burner on your computer
can you cpy the cdrw on to a cdr--that's
burns only once, of course. Just a
suggestion. Then you can give that cdrw

Subject: Alternative to total recorder?

Hi All,
I am currently using total recorder version 4 and think that it's a fairly
good piece of software, due to the fact that it records direct streaming
from the internet as opposed to recording all output from the sound card.
However, I am wondering if anyone out there knows of an alternative
program
that will do the same thing? The reason I ask is that I have found that it
is clashing with skype. I can not use skype at all unless I uninstall
total
recorder. Seeing as I use total recorder every day at some point,
uninstalling and re-installing is incredibly tiresome and I'd like to find
a
way around this if possible.

If anyone can help me with this at all, I'd be very glad to hear from you.
Thanks,

Mimi: Yep..probably could; you did mean "Copy"..right; there was a letter
missing..and it came out "cpy"..but I think that's what you mmeant.
(lol)..yeah..happens to me too once in a while! Thing is..I actually have
two of the same CD; one good friend burned it; at the same time she gave me
the copy she made for me, this other friend also burned me the copy he gave
me; this is the one that won't play in my CD player. I had another
experience with a CD that wouldn't play in my CD player a few years ago; my
sister-in-law had been given a Christmas CD; her bother-in-law had burned it
for her, thinking that she had a CD player in her car. Since she
didn't..but has a tape deck, she gave me the CD to make a cassette of it.
So I slipped the CD into my CD player and..nothing; it just skipped right
over it..like it wasn't there! Fortunately for me..and my
sister-in-law..the player in my bomb box would play the CD..and since it has
the capability of recording from CD to cassette, I was able to do the job
that she wanted me to do for her!

I'm not sure if this is in keeping with the subject line here. But I just
had something happen that's..well..kind of along this same line; a friend
of
mine burned a CD for me..one that he had bought. It won't play on my CD
player that is hooked to my stereo receiver; for that matter..it doesn't
seem to want to play in the CD player in the bomb box! After checking
this
out..I discovered that the CD he used is a CDRW! Does this account for
why
it didn't burn correctly? The CD will play on my computer..but doesn't
seem
to want to play on my other CD players. I have also heard that..how
slow..or how fast..you burn a CD can have a baring on whether a CD will
play
on a conventional CD player. Insidently..the CD player I have back here
is
an old Sony that I got for Christmas in either 90 or 91. I'm told that
this
can make a difference. Is this correct?

It all depends on how the screen reader pronounces it.
Good program, I use it everyday, costs about $30.
The standard cost about $20, but I couldn't get it and Jaws to see eye to

That's why I use the pro version.

Also you do need to set up the length of time you want to record. You can't
just launch the program and press the record button. It doesn't work that

Saving a CD

2004-11-28 Thread Jim
Hi there,
I have a question.
I was trying to wrip a CD to my "My Music" folder using Media Player.
I have Nero, but I don't know how to do it so that it also includes the
information such as the CD title and song titles as well.
Anyway, something went awry and I ended up deleting that folder and wanted to
rewrip the CD. Now, it won't do it any more. Does Windows Media Player only
do a particular CD once, or once that CD has been wripped once, will it not be
wripped again if necessary?

questions about music download services

2004-11-28 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Hi listers,
I hope this is not off topic and apologize in advance if it is.

I am looking at the imusic download service but am skeptical about getting
into it without more information. Firstly, can anyone tell me what software
is involved in listening to and burning the files? I would like to be able
to burn the tracks I have downloaded to CD using Nero, is this possible?
Also, how is the overall selection? I would probably be looking for
country, folk, classical, and classic rock/oldies for the most part, and am
hoping to find a good selection and not just little-known independent
artists, which of course is impossible to determine without signing up.

My other question has to do with the Walmart downloads. I appreciate the
fact that you can browse their site and more or less listen to the tracks
before downloading. However, I have never tried burning any other format
to Nero except for wav or MP3 and was not sure this is possible. If it is
not possible, I guess I'd have to record the files to .wav or .mp3 and would
be concerned about loss of quality. I am, of course, assuming that there are
no problems with hidden fees, legality and accessibility issues, unwanted
spyware etc., so would want to know if I've overlooked something. Would
like to hear the pros and cons of getting involved with either of these from
those of you who have been there. All thoughts and advice much appreciated.

Re: Alternative to total recorder?

2004-11-28 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Tom and Danielle,
I see there are a number of responses to this thread so hopefully this is
not redundant. I just wanted to suggest the possibility of using simple MP3
maker as a possible solution to the driver conflict. It is a program that
is free and does not install its own driver so you might be able to have it
coexist with scipe without a problem. I seem to remember others reporting a
problem like the one you had, and found that I had to reconfigure Winamp or
Total Recorder whenever I wanted to get into or out of a chat program. This
was a couple of months ago when I was involved in an online class, so I can
relate to your frustration, especially since for me, at least, everything
was working fine until I somehow changed something that messed things up for
me.

For whatever it's worth, I wonder if your problems with TR have to do with
the OS you are running. I get the feeling it works better with XP, but Tom
and I have been emailing back and forth about our mutual problems with it
... I still have 98 and he's running Millennium.

Anyway, I don't immediately have the url for Simple MP3 Maker, but others
may or I'm sure you'll find it with a Google search. It is a no frills
recording program, by which I mean that I have not found ways to append to a
file or to schedule recordings for times when you are away from the
computer, but that doesn't mean these things can't be done if you are
creative. Also, like most other recording programs, it will pick up your
screenreader along with anything coming through your sound card unless you
have an external synthe or two sound cards, but even with these limitations
it might be worth a try for you. Hope this helps.

2004-11-28 Thread Donald L. Roberts
hello,

If I were a gambler, I would bet that the source of Danielle's problem is that
in the tab
right after use sound board, there is a setting which has two choices. The
first is
record using the following setting: You are then given the option of selecting
your
recording source at that point. Do not select that one. The one which should
be checked
is the setting which says something like: "Use the lines of recording selected
in the
mixer advance. And for heaven's sake, do not select software recording or it
will mute
software speech.

Re: questions about music download services

2004-11-28 Thread RQJ
Hi Susan,
I can only comment on the Walmart service, since it is the only one of the
two you mentioned that I have used.
The last time I was there, their selections were available in wma format,
and had to be played with windows media player,
which has to be at least version9.
When you purchase, you are actually purchasing a license for each track,
which at the time was 99 cents each, for most single tracks.
Either you can't burn them to cd with Nero, or any other burner, or I just
didn't have a wma plug in for Nero.
At any rate, there is very detailed imformation on the Walmart website.

every level. I listened to the broadcast on a home component system, 15
year old boom box, cheaper newer boombox and an older clock radio. The
sound is fantastic, very rich in highs and lows. Definitely worth every
penny I spent.

thanks,
Norma

Quitting Skype

2004-11-28 Thread Ken Burgess
I just wanted to clarify a point I made earlier in another message about
Skype and total recorder. If you run Skype, you must quit it from the
sys-tray, otherwise it continues to run in the background and may be
competing with total recorder for system resources.
