Hi Mark,

you could try using the seek slider, which you can quickly move to by pressing
ctrl+tab one or two times. The arrow keys move you by one twentieth of the
track length, and shift + arrow keys move you by one four hundredth of the
track length,

David.

Hi folks,

For some reason I've got a problem with WMP version 11, in that I can't get any

Normally I'm a Winamp user, but for some reason the protected files I'm trying
to play seem to be causing a problem, or at least that's the only reason I can
think for Winamp crashing, resulting in the whole system hanging. There WMA
files if this sheds anymore light on the subject. TIA.

Just tried David's suggestion regarding skipping around in Windows Media

combinations. I also tried getting a WMA file to play in Winamp and wasn't
successful. Here is a little more info on the problem:

Mathew, these Face Book invites are increasingly being seen on lists and in my

I think when people join FB it simply offers to link to their address book and

to my mind being a "friend" on Face Book is pretty meaningless.

Yes, this list does have a lot of genuine traffic, so hold in here.

Hello!

In case you have not been made aware of this by now, the Woodstock
Commemoration was a radio program presented by Steve Matzura, a regular
presenter and member of the ACB Radio Staff and this list. This was not
spam. You may find notices of such ACB Radio programs on all channels, and
because it is both computer and audio related it is appropriate to post
here. I'm not scolding, just informing.

Sometimes it may take a while to get an answer to a question but chances are
that if you don't get one there isn't one or perhaps your request has gotten
lost in cyberspace, which also happens given the nature of the Internet and
the sometime foibles of listservs.

As for the Facebook and other messages, unfortunately PC-Audio gets its
share of unrelated postings, sometimes mistakenly sent by a poster who
forgets to check the reply field before posting. The moderators are alert
and attempt to stop inappropriate or off-topic messages wehn they occur but
it's a tough job. You couldn't pay me to be a mod!

I hope this explains a little and corrects any false impression you may have

Fwd: Total recorder: still plenty to get excited about

2009-08-14 Thread Steve Pattison
 From:Dane trethowan dane.tretho...@me.com
 To: VIP L vi...@softspeak.com.au

Hi everyone!

This software package is the best recorder of Sound Streams and from
sound devices I've seen anywhere for the Windows PC and the
Professional version priced at around $36.00 is just a bargain but I
wonder to users of the software itself realise just what an amazing
bargain it is? most people probably just use it for recording and
don't bother about some of the advanced features which are hidden
away, on in particular I've just recently started using is Total
Recorders ability to use cue sheets or cue files.

I've been using Cue sheets for years with other excellent applications
such as Exact Audio Copy - The best CD ripper on Planet earth - and
amadeus Pro - possibly one of the best value for money audio editors
ever written for the Apple Mac -so it made sense to me to explore what
Total Recorder had to offer in hits handling of Cue Sheets at some
stage.

A little explanation before I continue I think, a Cue sheet is a
simple text file which can - if the user so desires - be knocked up in
a text editor or modified thereby if appropriate. The Cue sheet
refers to an audio file - usually a Wave or a Flac file - which a
software application can act on. For example, suppose you record a TV
show in Total Recorder into a wave file and have a Cue file associated
with it, you can issue specific instructions to Total Recorder which
it will put into that Cue file or you can put them there yourself for
very precise control over that Wave file, this comes into its own with
Total Recorder if you're wanting to edit out those annoying commercial
breaks from your TV show for instance.

I record TV shows regularly from one channel which has a 3 second
pause at the beginning and the end of a commercial break - how
convenient as I can programme Total Recorder to generate a "track
Separator" point in the cue file associated with my recording, - I can
then delete the tracks I don't want out of my recording - in this case
the unwanted commercial breaks - and just have the recorded show left,
this is done with the Cue Sheet editor of Total Recrder>

Previously the only real way to illiminate unwanted breaks in a
programme was to go through it and watch it live and doing the editing
of same "on the fly" but this feature reduces an editing job from say
a good 50 minutes to edit a 1 hour show to about 3 or 4 minutes,
amazing!

If you want further information on how this works - and you're a total
recorder user - then look in the help section under "Working with Cue
Sheets" and under "Split mode" or email me, I don't think that High
Criteria have tutorials or primers on this subject as yet because
these features aren't probably the most commonly used in Total
Recorder but they're powerful and effective nevertheless.

Re: Total Recorder verses Sound Forge

2009-08-14 Thread Ray

RayMy only comment Mathew is to say that these two programs are amed at
different needs.

Total Recorder is focused primarily on capturing sound from line or streaming
sources. there is some editing capability built in, but comapred to sound
Forge this is secondary.

As for audio quality, well by the time the digits get to the software they've
undergone some processing to do so, at least via the line inputs of your
computer. so, it is the hardware, i.e. soundcard, that determines audio
quality more than the software you are using to record and edit stuff.

(Certainly though Total recorder is a lot cheper than Sound forge.)
Ray.

Re: New to audio production

2009-08-14 Thread David Bailes
Hi Martin,

here are some more detailed instructions for using Audacity to create the
example you wanted.

1. Open audacity.

2. On the track menu, open the add new sub menu, and choose Audio track
(ctrl+shift+n).

3. Open the Tone generator dialog from the Generate menu. In this dialog, the
duration control is like a spin box. By default, the format is seconds which
are grouped into two groups of three digits, and the default time is thirty
seconds. To change this to one second, press End to move to the last digit,
press left arrow to move to the digit 3, and then type in the digits 0 and 1.
Note Jaws then reads out zero zero zero, but that's because the focus has
wrapped around to the first group of three digits.

4. The generated tone is selected, so to deselect this and move the cursor to
the end of this selection, press right arrow.

5. Open the silence generator dialog from the Generator dialog. Although the
default duration is read out as zero, this is a bug, and in fact it's 30 again.
So to change it to one, press end to move to the last digit, and follow the
insructions in step 3.

6. The silence is selected.  Select all the audio by pressing ctrl + A, and
then choose duplicate from the edit menu. so that you now have two identical
tracks. You can move the focus between the tracks by pressing up arrow and down
arrow.

7. Both tracks are selected, and a time range covering all the audio is
selected. To deslect track 1, move to the first track and press enter, which
toggles the selection of a track. So with track two selected, choose the
Reverse effect from the Effects menu. Track two now contains silence followed
by the tone, rather than the other way round in track one.

8. Set the pan control of track one to fully right, and the pan control of
track two to fully left. To change the pan of the focussed track, press
shift+P which opens a pan dialog. Type in 1 for pan to right, and minus 1 for
pan to left.

9. Select all the audio by pressing ctrl+a, and then open the repeat dialog
from the effects menu. specify how many repeats of the selected audio you want.

10. Press home to move the cursor to the start, and then spacebar to play/stop.

The Jaws guide I mentioned has more details:
http://vip.chowo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/jaws/Audacity-1.3.8-Guide.html

David.

My two cents worth?

I use the the M Audio Delta stereo sound card and the mixer software is
accessible - though it is five or six years old so it might have got
rediculously graphical in the interface now.

Many on the U S side mention the Turtle Beech sound cards as being good,

Hi all,

firstly thanks to Ray for his comment on sound cards being a crucial
component for recording audio. With that said, what do some of you
believe
are the best sound cards out there? I'm primarily concerned with
recording
my voice and all audio coming out of my computer. If you have just a
card

make and model I'll go ahead and research on my own so don't worry too
much about providing links and such. Thanks,

Finding Radio Stations that Broadcast Online

Hi all,

Following on from the discussion recently on this list about where to
find radio stations that broadcast on the Internet a very good home page
you might like to have a look at that contains a list of home pages with
links to radio stations is at www.rose.demon.co.uk. Once you get to
this home page the link you need is "Try My Radio Listening Page". I

all over the world. If I recall correctly the person compiled a list of all

I,

I have a turtle beach Santa Cruz card in my back up PC.
This card is almost ten years old and it is by far, the best little card for

The only place you can find one is on EBay. You can grab one for around
$10.

a multy channel card has mike input, line in, line out, digital out and
sometimes in, along with some other features depending on the card and what
you want to do with it. i also just baught a sound blaster internal card
that is multy channel that cost me $130. if you want to make really good
recordings with other components connected to your machine then you want a
multy channel card. if you just want voice recordings then you could go with
a lesser one.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010290057%2050001431&name=Turtle%20Beach%2fVoyetra
If you can convey the exact model you've purchased I would greatly
appreciate it. One thing that seems a bit odd is that these TurtleBeach
cards seem much less expensive than the M Audio cards. Do you know why?

My two cents worth?

I use the the M Audio Delta stereo sound card and the mixer software
is

accessible - though it is five or six years old so it might have got
rediculously graphical in the interface now.

Many on the U S side mention the Turtle Beech sound cards as being
good, but

I've no experience of those.

Hi all,

firstly thanks to Ray for his comment on sound cards being a crucial
component for recording audio. With that said, what do some of you
believe
are the best sound cards out there? I'm primarily concerned with
recording
my voice and all audio coming out of my computer. If you have just a
card
make and model I'll go ahead and research on my own so don't worry

much about providing links and such. Thanks,

a multy channel card has mike input, line in, line out, digital out and
sometimes in, along with some other features depending on the card and what
you want to do with it. i also just baught a sound blaster internal card
that is multy channel that cost me $130. if you want to make really good
recordings with other components connected to your machine then you want a
multy channel card. if you just want voice recordings then you could go

Re: WMP Issue

2009-08-14 Thread Mark Matthews

David and Matt,

Thanks a Mill for this - using the Seek bar indeed accomplished the task.
From looking at the info on the Winamp forum page, the DRM is looking to be
the issue. This doesn't surprise me, as I wasn't even able to acquire the
license initially, where as in WMP it authorised no problem, which set alarm
bells ringing in my mind regarding the Management Rights.

Once again thank you!

Hi Mark,

you could try using the seek slider, which you can quickly move to by
pressing ctrl+tab one or two times. The arrow keys move you by one
twentieth of the track length, and shift + arrow keys move you by one four
hundredth of the track length,

David.

Hi folks,

For some reason I've got a problem with WMP version 11, in that I can't
get any media to back up...the 'Rewind' button is always shown as
unavailable.

Normally I'm a Winamp user, but for some reason the protected files I'm
trying to play seem to be causing a problem, or at least that's the only
reason I can think for Winamp crashing, resulting in the whole system
hanging. There WMA files if this sheds anymore light on the subject. TIA.

Replying To Questions: Was RE: Woodstock commemoration

2009-08-14 Thread PamDrake
Amie and List,

I thought about posting privately but decided to post here in case there are
new people on board who might be interested in the answer. Apologies to the
veteran listers among us.

This is my personal opinion. When I ask a question and get a ton of "I
don't know but you can try this" messages it frustrates me. There is one
other list which I will not name where a lister I will not name is
constantly launching into his ideas about what blind people don't know,
should know, and what he sees is the problem with such questions, often
after stating he doesn't know the answer.

I, for one, try to work out my problems and if I ask for help it is likely
that I haven't been able to figure out the answer. The last thing I want is
a lecture on how I may not have tried hard enough or how we as a class need
more training. Some people think this is fine and serves as a learning tool
but I for one often don't ask because I don't want to deal with this person.
Some people have written me privately because they also don't want to get
into this kind of discussion. That's another option: when in doubt you
might want to write privately to the questioner. How to do this may depend
on what e-mail program you're using.

I would rather just let the question go by without answering if I don't know
the answer, or at least be sure that if I give a possible answer I label it
as a possibility that has a good chance of success.

Also, I changed the subject line here because the subject no longer had
anything to do with the Woodstock discussion. This is also considered good
procedure on mailing lists because the reader can tell whether or not the
message he/she is about to open really is related to the subject line. We
all forget this little piece of good conduct now and then.

Hope this helps.

Pam

especially after spending over an hour composing an e-mail in Spanish.
  Sorry!

Pam

Question about Subscribing to a Podcast

2009-08-14 Thread Steve Pattison
Hi all,

I was trying to subscribe to the Bridge Church Podcast at
www.bridgechurch.com.au and it seems like you need iTunes to subscribe
to this podcast. I subscribe to several podcasts using Golden Ear a
podcatching program without any problems. My question is are there some
podcasts that can only be subscribed to using iTunes? I could install
iTunes but it seems a bit inefficient when all I need it for is this
podcast. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Regards Steve

Looking for one special site?

2009-08-14 Thread tickpub
Greetings All and thank you for all the good things you have sent my way.
Could anyone tell me where that site is that offers all kinds of free
programs. I once had it but lost everything in a crash. It offers hot key
programs, instant sizing programs, typing programs, calendars, and all
kinds of little utility programs and many other useful and easy to
download programs. It was a site created for or by the blind and offers
scripts as well as programs, Thank You!

Hi Martin. Afraid I don't know Audacity.

Possible reason for the problem with the c0onstant tone using my
instructions: The two files are different file types. Did you import
them or did you create them with the same program?

Thanks for your advice Robert. I have done what you indicated; namely
creating two separate files, and then bringing them together. However,
this latter part is where I have ran into a problem. The two files
merge, and as a result, I just get a constant tone in one ear piece.
Another helpful member on a different list has given me very precise
instructions on how to achieve what I am trying to do with a programme
called Audacity. Again, my problems in producing the audio file I am
after is probably my lack of experience. In this latter case, I am not
sure how to move between tracks in order to select that audio track in
order to manipulate it in the way indicated. Furthermore, the
instructions tell me to pan one track to the left and the other to the
right. Only problem is, that within Audacity, I can find no menu item
referring to pan either left or right.

Thanks for your help Bob.
Martin
