I think the first thing that struck me about the Echo Tap was how well it 
prejects sound about a room given the size of the device which is smaller 
than the Amazon Echo itself.


I have the Tap sitting on the kitchen table now where I can clearly hear 
it even at very low volume, I'm in the lounge area which goes through to 
the kitchen.


The first thing I did with Tap was to take it outside to enjoy the 
sunshine and listen to the BBC Radio 4 Midnight news.


I would stress that this device - whilst not the best for music - does the 
spoken word proud indeed! clearly audible and understandable.


By all means, listen to your music on the go with Tap but its nothing 
compared to other systems around and neither we should expect it to be at 
the price paid for a Tap.


I'd be most interested to hear comments from other Tap users.

I intend to use the Tap mainly for listening to Talking Books and Radio 
though of course! there's no reason why I can't use it for much much more 
with Alexa.


I haven't seen any mention of the Hands Free update we've been discussing 
yet so perhaps its not available everywhere at this time.

I would think having the Echo Dot would mean looking at a good set of wired 
stereo speakers or a wired connection to a stereo receiver or amp.  The blue 
tooth is nice, but one big advantage to the Dot is being able to get a 
stereo signal.

Something nice I noticed when I paired my Amazon Echo Dot to my B&W T7 
bluetooth speaker.
I can easily ski backwards and forwards between tracks using the Transport 
buttons so if your Bluetooth device does have transport buttons then you’ll 
most likely to be able to use these along with Voice commands and so on.
Now that I have my Amazon Echo Dot here its given me incentive to take a 
look at the new B&W
Zeppelin  wireless 
speaker which has both Bluetooth and AirPlay.

Yep, will keep an eye on that, I don’t suppose you have any idea of what 
exactly the hands free update does? I think I know and I’ll explain and I’ll 
make it clear that I’m only guessing.
With the Tap at present you have to press a button and then speak your 
request to Tap.
With the other units you just speak your request and that request is 
performed so I’m guessing the firmware update for the tap illumines the need 
to press the button before you start speaking?

Magic Door game which is a basic Interactive Fiction with sound effects 
and although it's quite amusing I ultimately found it a bit limited. 
I've just enabled the International Space Station skill and enjoy 
finding out where it is at any given moment and when it will pass 
Glasgow next as well as news about what the astronauts are doing. Alexa 
has a lot of hidden talents herself but you have to work quite hard to 
find them and doing so is very hit and miss.


Oh, and just for you, Dane, I asked Alexa to play the Pipes. The first 
time I got the Pogues instead and the second I got the Pipes of the 
Royal Tank Command playing Chariots of Fire of all things. It didn't 
last long as military bands are definitely not my thing. I'm not keen 
on the Scottish Pipes on their own although there is a very excellent 
pipe-based rock band called the Red Hot Chile Pipers. Sadly, Alexa will

Now that I’ve had mine up and running for a little longer than 24 hours 
I’m probably in a better position to reply to this eMail than I was 
Yesterday.
Firstly a note to anyone in Australia or outside the US or UK who may be 
thinking of going down the Echo path, is it worth it? Well yep, I reckon 
it is and even better is the fact that setup requires no hacks or cracks 
to be applied as was previously the case.
Your Echo will still think you’re somewhere else - Mine thinks I’m in 
Seattle - but I can still get standard time for my local location, this 
can be set easily in settings, in my case I chose the Australian time 
zone and the NSW Eastern Time region, works fine!
If you’re in Australia then probably one of the best places to get an 
Amazon Echo is from eBay, they sell for as little as around $100 
Australian depending on the model you want.
I had my Echo 24 hours after I ordered it, the eBay store I bought from 
dispatched the item using Australia Post Express Post.
The first thing I had to do was to find a wall adapter to make the 
supplied power supply compatible with our AC mains socket, that done it 
was just a matter of plugging the supply into the mains and connecting 
to the Echo, the power lead plugs into the bottom of the Echo and 
protrudes from the rear of the unit.
Echo will say “Hell” and I think she tells you you’re in setup mode so 
you know you can proceed with the setup which is all done from the 
Amazon Alexa home page.
For those using Echo now and who have it set up the home page is well 
worth exploring if you haven’t done so already, so much there to tweak 
and see.
Even though I’m in Australia I’ve had little trouble having my Echo 
recognise the voice commands I’ve issued.
There’s a lot I can’t use but a hell of a lot I can, I can use Spotify 
Premium with Echo however I can’t use Amazon’s Unlimited Music Service.
Radio is an oddity I have to admit, I can’t get Echo to tune into many 
stations using voice commands however I can manually have Echo tune into 
stations if I use the Tunein interface from the Echo Home Page so go 
work that one out, if anyone manages to listen to radio 2GB in Sydney 
Australia with their Echo then I’d be interested to know how you did it 
with voice commands?
The Echo can be paired with an amazon remote controller, has anyone done 
this?
I’m a little disappointed with the Bluetooth facilities offered, yes you 
can stream to Echo using Bluetooth so that’s nice and handy if you want 
to use Echo as a speaker for your mobile device etc but I’m surprised 
that Echo can’t stream the other way - say stream the output using 
Bluetooth to a pair of Bluetooth headphones etc.
To summarise, this purchase was well worth the while for me and I’m sure 
I’m going to be served well for many years to come, I may even consider 
buying one of the other Echo models such as the Dot, the Tap can be 
connected to a stereo or television, is that right?

There are two types of set ups in the US.  If you have a receiver or other 
device capable of receiving and decoding Sirius/XM signals, you buy an 
antenna cable (antenna attached) that plugs into a dedicated recepticle on 
the back of the receiver.  Second, you can buy a cradle that connects to an 
output device like a receiver through RCA connectors.  The cradle holds a 
Sirius/XM tuner (about the size of an old fashioned Walkman).  The cradle, 
with a power supply has connections for going to the stereo and one for the 
antenna.


I can't speculate about the internet radio part of your question.  Hope this 
helps.

I know of the Sirius Radio service and I know its only available in the

I also know that my Cambridge Audio 650T Digital DAB+FM/AM tuner can 
accept some sort of Sirius Radio modual and its this that I'm interested

Does anyone know of Sirius Radio Modules and how they connect? The Tuner 
has a 9 Pin RS232C serial connecter, a 3.5MM mini jack and 2 RCA sockets, 
I know the RCA sockets act as line-in for the Sirius Radio module and I 
think the 3.5MM jack is also part of the connection but what about the 
RS232C socket, is that part of it too?



So where is all this leading you ask, well I'm wondering if the tuner can 
support a Sirius Radio Module could it support an Internet Radio module?



Obviously the Sirius Radio one has some sort of connection to a satellite 
dish or something similar I'd imagine so an Internet radio module would 
therefore have to have a LAN jack or perhaps Wi-Fi as part of it.



Any ifway if someone has some views on this I'd be interested in them.

There is an eclectic community radio staion in Madison Wisconsin, WORT-fm. 
You can find the station online at http://www.wortfm.org.  On Saturday 
evenings from 6 to 8 p.m., the station features an early rock and roll show. 
It's mostly American based, but the host does feature a fair amount of 
British music and does occasional specials with that as an emphasis.


The shows are archived for a week at the station's web site.

To be fair, I program a world music show on the same station.  However, John 
MacDonald is a great programmer and is recognised nationally for his show.

They've no replacement for the Voice Sense except for much more expensive 
braille output models.  They won't update the old Voice Sense to maintain 
its level of service/operation.  One of the features that got me to buy a 
Voice Sense was access to services such as Twitter.  They won't update the 
Voice Sense to handle the changes in Twitter's API, but they're constantly 
updating their more expensive braille products.


I don't believe the Book Sense is available any more and they replaced it 
with something that's at least twice as expensive.


Even if I could afford a new HIMS notetaker, I'm not at all sure that I'd 
purchase from them.

And finally, you can use your FetchTV box as a media server thus you can
share all that you've recorded with your Windows PC, Mac or other devices
such as your Blu-Ray player etc.

I should have the FetchTV unit some time next week and hope to be able to
tell you more about it then but I guess I should answer the question, why
did I bother buying a FetchTV box?

I bout a Phorus ps1 because it was only $50 US.  I wanted to try it out 
before making a more serious commitment to play-fi.  The Phorus also support 
blue tooth and Air Play.  I'm not hooked into the IOS ecology, buy the rest 
of my family is.  It's a little smaller than I thought, but is supposed to 
lay loud and clear.


I haven't had the time to do more than download the play-fi program to the 
computer.  It's then when I think I discovered that I need a dlna media 
server to push the music to the speaker.  It will be the weekend before I 
get to play much more with it.  I'll report on my discoveries.

I have two of them.  They work very well.  Essentially, they become the 
default sound card for your computer so you'll need to designate your 
computer's sound card to be used with your screen reader.  They do cause a 
bit of a mess with the wires and keeping the 2 different DACs straight, in 
my case.


For the price, I don't think you can go wrong though.

The station wants to go more digital for programming of music, features, psas 
etc.  They are currently looking at a station automation program called MIXX

The person who is in charge is somewhat concerned about the accessibility of 
this program.  Has anyone had any experience using it and have any views about

I don't wonder about what is available out there in the stores anymore, I 
just buy it and enjoy the convenience, so is the case with a new portable 
hard drive I just bought on eBay.


Its size is unremarkable at1TB but what is remarkable are the connectivity 
options this drive has.


Its USB 3.0 compatible but also Wi-Fi B/G/N ready.

Added to this are the extra DLNA and AirPlay connectivity functions 
included.


Added to this is the built-in rechargeable battery, it only lasts for 6 
hours that's true - nothing startling there - but at least one gets 6 hours 
of good portable use.


I should receive the drive later on this week and will let you know how I go 
setting the device up though I doubt it will be too much of a problem.

The first box under Remote CDDB, I have is for Freed not Gracenote  In my 
case, it's been pulling down the track information without a problem.  There 
are generally several options in that first entry under Remote CDDB.  Try 
arrowing up and down to find something other than Gracenote.

are a very convenient option, to illustrate the point let's take my
situation where I'm using a room with a small TV, I have a surround-sound
system in the lounge but don't want that in my Den, I just want something

Using a Soundbar would mean very little set-up on my part to enjoy the
experience of Surround-Sound in a movie or from Channels on my Set Top 
Box
etc, no need to set-up individual speakers as I did in the lounge and so

these days - would improve the sound quality of your TV, the speakers in
those TV sets now are even worse than 2 tins, 1 on each end of a piece of

There are several reasons for the bad audio quality, the most obvious

that Television sets these days are getting to the point of being as 
thick
as a piece of cardboard thus good sound would really be defying the laws 
of

physics.

The Verge did a review of the Fire TV from a general perspective.  From what 
I've read, the Voice Search feature works wonderfully, but there's no 
auditory read out of the results i.e. you'll need to know the title of the 
movie for which you're looking.  Music search is not yet available, but is 
rummored to be coming soon.


The Boice Search, for now, is limited to Amazon products i.e. not with Net 
Flix, Hulu Plus, etc.


I have yet to see any info about accessibbility features other than Voice 
Search.

Have you changed the usb cable you're using?  I find my Plextalk Pocket if 
very sensitive to the cable used.  If I use USB cables other than the ones 
provided with the unit, I generally get the failed to connect error.


Occasionally, I find that making sure the Plextalk is turned on before 
connecting rather than turning it on after connecting also makes a 
difference.

The satellite units are about a foot tal and two inches in diameter.  They 
are round with the touch controls for volume on the right hand speaker. 
They appear to be two columns or sticks on your desk.  They are good and 
heavy with about a 3 to 4 inch cylindrical base to them.


The woofer looks quite like a small bee hive and sits on 3 or 4 small feet 
that allow sound to escape from under the unit.  It really should be placed 
under a desk.


The design is visually appealing and they are a part of the industrial 
design display at the NYC Museum of Modern Art.  I believe they were 
originally intended to be used with one of the early Macs.


I just read an ad/review of some new bluetooth/air play speaker/sound units 
from Cambridge Audio called MINX.  The review made them sound interesting.

Altec Lansing Expressionist Ultra speaker system so that looks to be the 
end of those.


I looked around for another pair but can't find them anywhere which is a 
shame as this system has been the best Computer speaker system I've 
owned.


I then decided to do a little research, "Google Is My Friend" so I typed 
"Best Computer Speakers" in and found to my amazement a web page that 
lets you compare all sorts of atributes for computer speakers, size, 
wattage, controls, features and so on.


From the little time I had to look at this page I found that the nearest 
competitor to the Altec Lansing Expressionist Ultra speaker system seemed 
to be the Harman Kardon Sound Sticks, audio specs seem the same except 
that the Sound Sticks only have a low end of 44HZ instead of 40HZ for the 
Expressionist Ultra speaker system, nothing to worry about then in that 
area, both speakers have a top frequency of 20KHZ.


The only other annoyance about the Sound sticks was that the controls 
were on the speakers themselves - volume was on 1 speaker and volume for 
the sub-woofer was on the woofer -, yes an annoyance but not a critical 
point, something that wouldn't turn me off buy this speaker setup.


So has anyone had any experience with the Harman Kardon Sound Sticks and 
what do you think or perhaps you have another recommendation or - even 
better - perhaps you know of where I can get another Altec Lansing 
Expressionist Plus speaker system .

I have a pair of the Soundstix 2's and I love them.  I set the volume fairly 
high on the speaker and then control the actual listening level from volume 
controls on my keyboard.


They're nicely balances, feel solid, look good and sound great at low and 
high volumes.  I've read that the 3rd iteration featuring bluetooth are not 
as good.  I would like an additional input jack, but tht's not a feature.

you compare all sorts of atributes for computer speakers, size, wattage, 
controls, features and so on.


From the little time I had to look at this page I found that the nearest 
competitor to the Altec Lansing Expressionist Ultra speaker system seemed 
to be the Harman Kardon Sound Sticks, audio specs seem the same except 
that the Sound Sticks only have a low end of 44HZ instead of 40HZ for the 
Expressionist Ultra speaker system, nothing to worry about then in that 
area, both speakers have a top frequency of 20KHZ.


The only other annoyance about the Sound sticks was that the controls were 
on the speakers themselves - volume was on 1 speaker and volume for the 
sub-woofer was on the woofer -, yes an annoyance but not a critical point, 
something that wouldn't turn me off buy this speaker setup.


So has anyone had any experience with the Harman Kardon Sound Sticks and 
what do you think or perhaps you have another recommendation or - even 
better - perhaps you know of where I can get another Altec Lansing 
Expressionist Plus speaker system .

Hello can I get a audio tutorial on the small jambox?
I can't figure out what is what as far as how to turn it on off I 
figured out how to pair it and I think I figured outr the volume bottuns 
but a audio user guide or something would be helpfull/ this is the small

I am using Jaws and Windows XP.  When I enter the Audible.com/access site, 
Jaws reports 7 headings and 42 links.  I remain signed in as I don't sign 
out at the en of a session.


I find the library link right after the Advanced Search link which follows 
the general search box and button.  the library link is right above the 
"pre-order" link.


I am assuming that you are signed into your account?

everything, it's gone beyond a joke now, i started having this problem 
with audible last december, and it's now may, and i'm still without my 
audible books, sorry once again for the rant, but it's really bugging me,

What happens when you click on the Library link?  What happens for me is I 
need to sign into my audible account with my password and hit continue. 
That in turn opens the Library, although there is a lot of material before 
the Library section of the web page.  Using Jaws I generally navigate to the 
Library section with the insert plus enter command.  I have to hit that 
several times.


Once there, I find a list of my books.  Depending on how things are sorted 
it might be books purchased in the last 6 months or all of my books by 
author whichever I've selected.


If I want to download the first book or portion of a book in the list.  I 
call up my "lists" command with insert plus f7 and search using the letter d 
to find the download link.  After the title of the book, there are lots of 
rating links before getting to the download link.


Hitting enter on the Donwload link starts the download and by alt tabing, I 
can navigate to a page that shows me the process of my download.  Once 
downloaded, if I have my device plugged into the computer, Audible Manager 
starts up and transfers the book to my device.  If for some reason it does 
do that automatically, I navigate to the book in Audible Manager and hit alt 
plus t to commence the transfer process.  Once completed, I can exit each of 
the now open three pages and disconnect my device.


Where in the process described above do things go wrong for you?

There is a Blind Audible listserv I think it's at 
blindaudible-subscr...@yahoogroups.com  At least that's where it used to be.


I'm assuming that you have both the Audible Download Manager and Audible 
Manger downloaded and installed.


Let me know at what point things go badly for you and I'll see if I can 
help.

internet explorer. i take it, you can still reach your own library. if you 
have any more suggestions, i would gladly hear them. it is a pitty they

There's no doubt that even the accessible site is somewhat clunky especially 
on the account and library links.  I would suggest using your screen readers 
command to list the available links and see if that helps you find the 
specific links you are looking for.

Most ripping programs will let you fill in the data and submit it.  What 
program are you using.  In CDEX, After you input the data, towards the 
bottom, there's a button to submit or re-submit.

Sorry about the delay in answering your question.  You would use the f3
and f4 commands to mark where you want to make cuts.  You mark the
beginning of where you want to cut, then use your navigation commands to
go forward to the end of where you want to cut, and press f4, then delete.
You can, btw, decide which commands you wish to use for navigating
through the video under the navigation tab in the prefferences under
tools.  For instance, You can move one minute at a time with
control+right or left arrow, every ten seconds with shift+ctrl+right or
left arrow, and so forth.

I believe I have the latest version of Video Redo. I find it still
accessible, although I do not use the ad detection feature, since I find
it's more accurate for me to just do the commercial cuts manually.

I'am using WMC 2002 and a Hauppauge card.  Since Charter went digital, I 
can't really make it work, but in analogue days, I'd set the recording in 
Media Center with the cable hooked up to my computer.

are u using windows media center?
also are u tuning directly to the channel or are u recording threw the 
coax cable and recording via channel 3?

I have a string of 30 mp3 files that I'm trying to burn onto a CD for the
car.  I've done this acouple times before, so I know it can work.  Most of
the files seem OK and are added to the burn list.  Some, seemingly random,
get the error message.  So I have replaced the files that are in error with
other copies of the same recording and it usually is OK.  So I'm wondering
what is wrong with the bad files?  They play (using winamp) just fine.
Still would like to know what error 15 meant.  There's a contact link on the
burnaware website; so maybe that's my next step.

Is anyone using BurnAware Free?  When selecting tracks to burn to CD, many
of them give me "error 15" and says can't burn.  Does anybody know what
error 16 means?  On their website they have a list of error codes, but 15
isn't on the list.

I don't know anything about iTunes, but I think I remember someone saying 
that there was a normalize setting though I don't know if it's just for 
playback or for permanent level.


If the files are in .mp3, you might search out a program called mp3 gain. 
There's a slight learning curve to the program, but it does an excellent job 
of making a permanent file that is well equalized as to level.

I'm not sure I understand your question.  Are you holding down the up and 
down volume buttons and it's not reporting the change?  It will only work 
when paired with a bluetooth device.  If still not talking try holding down 
the battery button to see if that turns things on for you.

I had to have my sighted daughter help me with that.  One trick is that he 
unit has to be turned off to get it to update.  Otherwise, you just might 
need a pair of eyes.

There is a bit of a learning curve with Eac and I've never been willing to 
put the time into it.  I rip to 320 kbps using Real player and Express Rip 
from NCH and am very happy with the results.  Express Rip is sometimes a bit 
clunky especially in the looking up of track info.


Supporters of EAC say you get a very clean copy, but my aging ears aren't 
sharp enough to notice the difference for the most part.

I rip to MP3, and I use something less than a 320K bit rate, so I don't
think you're insane, but it depends on what you'll be doing with these
ripped files. For my part, I'm not an audiophile and I'm not going to be
playing these on a high fidelity system, so I make some allowances for
speed and convenience.

If I had the ears that I had when I was younger, and I had the time and
the space, then I'd be considering EAC and FLAC myself.

IMHO, you're not insane for going with what makes sense for your 
situation.

I used exact audio copy to rip my cd collection, comprising around 1000
discs to flac.  To date I haven't encountered any tracks with audible
artefacts, even those which eac reported as having possible errors.

Eac seems to be generally regarded as the most accurate ripping tool
around.
By utilising both secure mode, and the accurate rip facility, I reckon
you
can be pretty sure if eac reports no errors you have a perfect copy.

The process of ripping even a collection of a few hundred discs can be
time
consuming, so it pays to get it right first time.

With this in mind, I personally feel it's well worth taking the time to
learn and configure exact audio copy.

You don't have to subscribe to hear the book.  Once it is purchased, you 
simply need to use the Audible Manager program.  It's free and does not

Depends on where you purchase them from. I'd suggest checking out the
terms and conditions of the site where you're purchasing your books,
Audible in this case. Does Audible allow you to burn their books to a CD
or copy them to an MP3 player? I'm not sure about Audible's terms and
conditions or how they enforce their DRM strategy, but I would assume
you can still listen to your Audible books even after you leave Audible.
You'd still be bound by the terms and conditions that you agreed to when
you bought the books though. I'm not exactly sure what you're objecting
to though, since I don't see the message you're replying to below.

It's been a long time since I've used Audible, and I don't think I have
the books I bought from Audbile around any more. I guess I should
probably check that Windows system where I put them, but I'm sure those
books are up on BARD by now. I've used Overdrive.com though, but that's
a bit different. I never purchased a book from Overdrive.com, I was just
borrowing them, and I obviously had to agree to get rid of any copies
I'd made when the lending period was over.

I just downloaded MP3 Tag and while the "manual" way of editing tags seems ok, 
I was wondering if there's a way to automate the process with looking up the 
tag info on the net.  It seems that there is some way to do this, but I haven't 
been able to figure it out.  I've looked at the Help files and haven't found 
any guidance.

My guess is that it is saying "Key Lock" not delock.  The key lock switch is 
on the side with the volume.  Slide it away from the volume to unlock the 
Key Lock.  I assume you're using a Plextalk Pocket not the disk variety.  If 
it's the disk variety, I don't know how to unlock the key lock.


If we're talking the Plextalk Pocket and the Key lock isn't engaged.  Slide 
the lock into locked position and then hold down the "on" key for 10 seconds 
until you hear it beep at you.  Return th key lock to the unlocked position 
and start up your Plextalk again.

Yep, it would appear to be a challenge for a blind person to use it 
would seem, the people I know have sight so they've used it and all 
report that no updates are available at this time.


I take your point about bluetooth devices but you certainly do not need 
a bluetooth device on hand to use one of these things, as I said they 
have a line-in socket thus make a truly marvelous portable speaker 
system, I plug a very nice Denon tuner into mine for example.

I you buy through the NCH.com.au site, you'll get a discount on the price.

might make a difference, so ripping at the slowest possible rate and
giving the CD ripping program the highest priority setting might help.
Also, what differences is the person saying they are noticing? I doubt I

important pieces of information.

XBMC is it accessible?

I ran across a reference to a Media Center application called XBMC.  It appears 
to be free and should do roughly what Windows Media Center does.  Has anyone 
tried it?  How's accessibility if you have?

Windows Media Center works well once set up, but I do have occasional problems 
updating the Program Guide.

I'm interested in Code Factory's new TV card program, but the $250.00 price 
after 30 days isa bit steep for me right now.

FS should be able to recognize another company's brand name; they have
defended theirs often enough.

purchase.

The set up is not accessible.  It is possible to sort of figure it out by 
going forward and backward, but it really is best to have some sighted 
assistance to set it up properly.  This is especially true when selecting 
speaker set up .

Check carefully the name field and see if there is some symbol like a dash 
or underline.  That would throw off the alphabetizing.

i burnt a mp3 cd, and it said that i had a whole batch of tracks, and had

Sorry for the gap in responses.  This is my work email and I was gone
for the weekend.

You can get the Real Player at:

www.real.com 

either the free basic player or the one time cost premium player will
work.

I think that Open MG Jukebox is loaded with Sonic Stage, but if not,
you should be able to get a copy through the support pages at:

http://www.sonystyle.com/vaio 

Once you get both of these installed, you need to attached and have
your player recognised.  That's done throught the "Add device" item in
the Tools menu in Real Player.

After you have your device configured and recognised, you can load
music onto your minidisc player.

Let me know if you need additional help.
