Re: splitting files, automatic stop and screen reader sound stop
Hi Joe. here's how you do it. The shift l marks the beginning of a file. The shift r marks the end of a file or selection. Ones these are marked and you hit the delete key you delete the selection. If you want to save the selection, look in the edit menu and save selection. also you can go to the files menu and save selection there. Hope that helps. -Original Message- From: Joe Giovanelli Sent: Tuesday, November 25, 2014 2:00 PM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: splitting files, automatic stop and screen reader sound stop Hello, All, Happy Thanksgiving! A couple of weeks back someone on this list recommended that I use Totalrecorder to split a file into separate tracks. Looking at the manual, I see that there's automatic stop and the ability to suppress speech from screen readers. The manual is very confusing to me. I prefer step by step instructions as to how to do various tasks. Information is scattered throughout and I don't know which items I should look at in order to accomplish my requirements. Some of the screens in the program are not labeled so I was not able to figure out whether a box works with seconds, minutes or even megabytes. I realize it would be a time consuming project to write out all the steps, but perhaps someone can point the way so I can figure out how to accomplish these things. Joe Giovanelli

You want to transfer your media content such as music and so forth from your iPhone to your Windows PC using a USB cable as though your iPhone were a hard drive right/ Well I'm not so sure that this will be as straight forward as we thought it would be and I'm not surprised to hear that you didn't have any success with those Apps which allow the sharing of data between iPods and computers. As I understand it - someone will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure smile. - iPod sharing Apps were written in the days of the iPod Nano, Shuffle etc well before the iPhones we're using now came along so - if that's the case - then these sharing Apps probably won't work given the iPhone has a different data distribution system, in effect the iPhone is locked and I think the only way to share your iPhones data openly - say music you've downloaded from the iTunes store or music you've aded to your music collection through iTunes - is to jail break the iPhone. It's worth noting here though, that it's apparently necessary to jailbreak, in order to have access to the filesystem of the IPads, but the ability to use USB devices, keyboards, microphones, etc sounds pretty neat if it still works. I understand that installing some sort of file manager on the phone would give partial access to those areas allowed to it, if it were connected to dropbox or a wireless device as you mentioned here, but how well does that work for all types of media other than music, like audio books. Also, does installing a file manager on the phone give complete access to all media on a phone, without you having to jealbreak? I'm mainly curious as one major downfall I have with storing my music and books on my phone is the ability to retrieve them from the phone if I no longer have them in my ITunes library on my computer. There's plenty of software for doing this, but as far as I've been able to figure out, not much of it is accessible. I'm not an iTunes user by default though I do have an iTunes library of Favorites, that's in the Cloud and available on my iTunes match so any IOS or device with iTuens installed can take advantage of the Match so I may enjoy my collection at any time, so far so good. As I'm using FLAC files more regularly I had to find a third party solution as I detailed in my original eMail on this thread thus I got the Skyshare Drive and started playing with other Apps to get that music onto my iPhone or at least have access to it so I needen't bother with iTunes. This I can just plug into my computer and copy the files to the device or I can insert large sd drives plus having the possibilities you mentioned, at least with a smartphone. So I think it's rather like this: If you compromise to playing music with a non-jailbreaked--or is it broken?--IPhone, you'll have to accept the more tedious ways of moving around things, i.e. buying an app here and a hard drive there. I for my part use the amazon cloud player which gives me enough music to listen to whenever I feel like doing so on the IPhone which I usually don't and play all the rest with my Plextalk Pocket, which involves other ways of compromising. The other annoyance with IOS is that - unless you have an adapter available from Apple - you cannot copy your music files from say your computer over a USB connection to a particular folder on your iPhone of your choosing but again, there are ways around that snag. Okay so its best not to focus on what can’t be done and focus on what can be done so let’s do that with IOS. The first App you’ll need is a Player and there are several good one’s out there but for the sake of simplicity let’s focus on two, oOplayer and File Browser, both do exactly what their names suggest. With both you can set up remote locations such as a Dropbox account, computer on a local or remote network, UPNP/DLNA device and so on, when configured you can then select what files you wish to hear or view. Now supposing you want to take your iPhone away from any network and want your favourite music to accompany you? No problem as both the aforementioned Apps will allow you to download your Music from a specific point - computer, Dropbox account etc - right to a folder on your iPhone where you can browse, play and manipulate your files to your hearts content. So this brings us to another possibly challenging topic, iPhones have only so much storage space so what if you have thousands upon thousands of files you wish to access at any one time or supposing your music collection is in a Lossless format that takes up a good deal of space? If this is the case then its time to look at a pocket sized hard drive with a built-in Wi-Fi network, I mentioned my Skyshare drive towards the end of last week and this drive has its own built-in Wi-Fi network which the iPhone can connect to. Once connected the Apps I mentioned earlier - oOplayer and File Browser - have direct access to the drive thus the content you’ve placed too the drive. The Skyshare drive on the surface looks like any other portable hard drive, it has a USB port on the back for connection to a computer with a USB 3.0 port for the copying and

Re: no microfone on laptop
The apple products and the new hp computers do this. You need a cable the breaks up in to an ear phone stereo jack and a mic jack. You'l find this at amazon in the apple accessories section. Belcon and Cmedia make them. The cable has 4 connectoion. tip two rings and a sleeve. The jacks are a stereo earphone and a microphone jack. About $3 or 4 dolars. So I was just wondering, once I have the songs I want downloaded to the computer, do I have to do anything special to the files in order to get them to play correctly in the car? Should I save all the files as one long .m3u file or can I just put the files on the drive as individual mp3s. The way the thumb drive in my Mom's car works, is simple. All you have to do is put the thumb drive in, and the music starts playing. Then, when you're finished listening, you simply pull the drive out and the radio starts playing again. Cool huh? Hi, It's because the outputs will not be the same in each device. If you turn both of them on and loading the output of one divice will be ok, bacause it was made for that impedance match. The other device might not match those phones. Like I said one output can feed two inputs, The other way where two outputs feeding the same load is not alwayse going to work. Hi, I can tell you about the stream. The easiest way is to Take the card out of the memory slot, put it in a card reader , then find the music folder. Then control c to copy the file or folder you want to place on your stream. Go to the stream's music folder and do a control v to paste the the file or folder in the vr$ music folder. The software supplied is Audacity. It works ok except there are two problems. The first I can deal with after a little exploring. What is happening that that as soon as I connect the USB JAWS stops talking. Well, I figured out that JAWS and Audacity are both fighting for my single sound card. So, now I go to the record button and then connect the player, press record and then press play on the player. I can then moniter the player to hear what song is being recorded and when it turns off at the end I just get out of Audacity and JAWS resumes talking. It's a little awkward but it works. The second problem is that once I have the casette transferred it is simply one long file with no markings between songs, so you can't select just one song at a time. Is there a way to put CD markings between songs so you can move from one song to another? Can I do this with Audacity? I don't want to bother to learn a new specialized music program because once I have these tapes copied to the computer then I can put them on my Stream or Apex or whatever so I won't need to mess with this again. I could use 2 sound cards, 1 for JAWS, 1 for stuff I want to record, but I'm using a laptop. So I'd have to take the computer, external sound card, and headphones or speakers everywhere I go, which is quite annoying. Any help is greatly appreciated. Re: olympus podcast
Hi, I have a dm520 and an ls7. The 520 was about the same price as the 520 , and the sound is just as good as the 520. The only main difference is that the ls7 has a monitoring feature before you record. It also has three three mics. The 520 has has two mics. I have recorded some jazz concerts with my ls7, and they came out very good. This helps for music lessons. I know I can do this via my IPhone, but for that to happen, I'd obviously need a sighted person here to help me do them. What I was wondering was whether or not there's a way of doing it with my computer, using its webcam and microphone. I do some video calling with Skype, and for those sessions, the person on the other end lets me know if I need to move the computer or screen a certain way so that they could get a clear picture of me. I thought perhaps I could do something similar when it came to recording videos. I figured once the screen and camera were positioned, I could use some kind of program to take the video of me playing my instrument and then I could send the video to my friend. Skype wouldn't do it, I know, but is there one that would work well with JAWS? So much is done with video or pictures these days, and honestly, it's hard for blind folks to keep up with this unless there's always sighted help around. Thanks for any recommendations. Re: Listening to what is being recorded with total recorder?
Hi, look at the record menu and there you will find a monitor option that lets you hear what the recorder is doing. When you see the monitor option just enter on it if you have a mike running be carful of this because you will have lots of feedback. -Original Message- From: Carliss Sent: Friday, March 09, 2012 10:25 PM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: Listening to what is being recorded with total recorder? Re: Win Amp
Hi colin, Winamp is very easy to use. Installing it is the hart part. The relevent key strokes are this. the alt key puts you in a menu. Arrowing down through this will tell you what you can do. If you want to add radio programs you first have to find the url of the station. You can get this from the stations web page. If winamp is set up it will exicute and begin playing. Then alt down arrow and you'l see a edit box . When you enter this station will be set as a bookmark. The last thing I'll tell you is that winamp integrates with your directory. It will play if any mp3 file is there. Hope this helps. OK, the quick answer is no, there's only one set of analog I/O for just about every Macintosh hardware I've ever laid hands on--notebook, desktop, they're all the same. What you want is a separate audio interface, like you suggested. Depending on what program you'll be using for your audio editing, you have choices, or limited choices. If you're going to use ProTools, Avid/Digidesign have opened this program up to virtually anything, or if not virtually anything, then a whole lot more than ever they used to allow, so check with your retailer to find out what's supported this week. Just about every major brand, like M-Audio or MOTU, is probably supported, and within those two brands alone is a plethora of choices. Can you use your Zoom H4N as an audio interface, if you have one, which I do not know? Don't know, but it would surely be interesting to me if you could, as that would make a very handy dandy external USB sound device for me. Hi Matthew, My winamp apearws to be lopsided to the right. The volume control show me that it' ok, but winamp still has never sounded right on this computer. Yu can use z to go back. C to pause. V to stop. B to go forward. I Uusually just keep the main window and the playlist window open. There are shortcut keys for opening and closing windows in it but you can also alt and down arrow to the nelsoft winamp sub menu and right arrow into it. Make sure jus the main window and playlist window are checked. You can open tracks in the playlist window. Control n wipes it clean. Also remember if your in the main window by accident it will remove all the other tracks and just have that one. You can go between windows with control tab. Also r is for repeat and s is for shuffle. Control shift t gives the time remaining and control shift r randomizes the whole playlist. This should be good enough to get you started. Also make sure it is in classic skin or jaws won't read it right. This can be changed in preferences with control p and then down to skins tab and make sure it is on classic then hit enter. Re: A Total Recorder annoyance.
Hi, Once you've saved the file, there is no way to append it. You can only append a file that is notclosed. -- Original Message - From: Colin Howard co...@pobox.com To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Wednesday, June 15, 2011 11:02 AM Subject: A Total Recorder annoyance. Greetings, Here is my problem. I started recording to a file and saved it to an external hard drive, in order to give it a name. I then continued using the file appending to it. I then finished my recording and tried to save the file which was just over an hour duration but TR said the disk was not accessible. I checked via My Computer and it was not visible, so pushed the connections firmly in, again, checking with My Computer, the disk could now be seen and I could read from it. So, tried again saving the file from TR and it still said disk was not accessible. In most other packages I've used, should this happen (as sometimes it does) a second attempt to save the file allows it to be saved. I even tried save as substituting c:\ for the original drive and it still complained the disk was not accessible. Should such a thing happen again, how do I force TR to save the file? Could I enter on the to-start button, then mark the start with shift-l then enter on the to-end button then mark the end of the file using shift-r, then save selection as? I tried copying the content to clipboard, only to be informed there was insufficient memory to save the content to the clipboard, for I hoped, by this method, to open a new file and paste in the content thence save to my c:\ drive. I am using WindowsXP Home and TR v8.2Pro. Ideas would be most appreciated. Hi, it works with windoweyes. What I figured out is, that you have to use the select to get through the search boxes. Try the shift down arow and then tab to the edit box, and then enter, so that the browser is off. Then hit theclick on the go button. Re: Total Recorder Instructions
Hi, you'll have to check the prefferennces settings. There you'll find the driver choices for input and output. I see three choices. I let total recorder be my primary sources for input and output. But total recorder will give you some clews, because some settings it will tell you that you've done something wrong. Where the trouble may start, is where you have u s b cards. You will have to experiment to get around this. - Original Message - From: Adrian Mathew adrianm...@clearmail.com.au To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Thursday, April 21, 2011 1:23 AM Subject: Re: Total Recorder Instructions Hi Ken. Tabbing gets you to the output and input level controlls. The alt key and arow keys gets the edit view and finally the preference modes like the recording source and parameters. Some day I'll do a podcast on it, but that should be enought to get you started. One more thing, after your finished with your recording Besure your stoped. thehn tap the alt key and down arow to save. Re: Turning an mp3 file into a wave file using cdex
Hi vinny, you have no choice. Because the file is already an mp3, the audio file that the software will create gives you a file only as good as the level of quality you had in the mp3 spec. If the mp3 file is 192k and 44.1 or so you'l get a perty good recording out of it. If it's 128 or less, the file will sound a little gritty. You could use winamp or windows media to create your audio file disc. - Original Message - From: Vinny Samarco vin...@hughes.net To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Saturday, March 12, 2011 11:35 AM Subject: Turning an mp3 file into a wave file using cdex Hello, I have a disk of mp3 files. Re: Blocking out screen reader when recording with total recorder?
Hi , if you are recording through software you can't block it out, because the what you hear option is turned in your computer. The only thing you can do is get an external synth so your screen reader voice doesn't come through. If your recording through the sound board this won't be a problem. Exsept what comes through the mike. You can edit that out by steping the time interval down to 1 second or so. - Original Message - From: Carliss seeje...@satx.rr.com To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Thursday, March 10, 2011 8:53 AM Subject: Blocking out screen reader when recording with total recorder?
