Re: Ok, Stupid Got Her DVD to Play!
Hi Tom, Success!! Ok, I got the movie to play with the audio description and I really enjoyed it. There are what appears to be two versions of the movie on the CD. I don't know if one is the one they released for the theaters and the other one maybe has some sceenes either added or cut or what. I selected Title 1 last night, but I'm going to try Title 2 and see what the differences are, if any. For those who might encounter this here is what I did. Placed the DVD in drive and opened PowerDVD. Waited for it to load. When the music started playing I pressed space so I could hear the menus better. I went down to go to in the contect menu. Right arrowed and went down to title 1. Right arrowed again to chapter 1 and moved up to browse. I then selected cTitle 1, Chapter 1 and tabbed to go to. Then I went down to languages, right arrowed and went down to where it said audio description for blind users. Before it had been saying this was unavailable, but now that I had a title selected it allowed me to choose this. I then closed the context menus and pressed enter and the description started immediately. I'm sure each DVD is going to take some experimentation of this type to get it to play. However, I'm glad I finally figured it out and thanks to all who gave me tips on DVD and things to try. Kris H. Re: Ok, Stupid Got Her DVD to Play!
Hi Hamish, Thank you so much!! Yes, I can access the language menus they are in the context menus. I just didn't mess with them because I thought I didn't need to change languages. One other question. There appear to be two copies of the movie on the disc. Title 1 and Title 2 both have 29 chapters. I tried selecting each of them and saw no difference. All the other titles on the disc only have 2 chapters to them. Why would they put two copies of the movie on the disc and are they the same or would there be some differences in them? This has been very frustrating, but also very interesting. With so much available on DVD, I'm sure I'll be working with a lot more of these. Thanks again!!! Kris H. Re: OK, So I'm Stupid!
Hi John, Well, I tried everything today. I've run diagnostics, tried every piece of software I've got on this machine to play the DVD, I've run updates and I'm thoroughly disgusted. I purchased Ray on DVD with video description and was all ready to watch it last night and 24 hours later I still can't get the darn thing to work. I finally got mad and sent an e-mail to CyberLink and asked them what the latest upgrade for PowerDvd was and if they had any solution to my problem. I even got out all the discs that came with this computer when I bought it 18 months ago to see if there were any with later versions of the DVD software on them, but there weren't. It reads data discs and plays audio discs just fine but not DVD's. There's a guy about 20 miles from here who works on computers and he also builds them from scratch for people. He has helped me out in the past and I think I'm going to give him a call Monday morning and see if he can help me troubleshoot over the phone. And, if not, maybe he can stop by and take a look at things for me. If he comes up with an answer, I'll let you know because it might solve your problem, too. Thanks much, John. Downloading NLS Books
Hi All, Well, I found the books I wanted from the NLS WebBraille catalog and downloaded several of them. However, when I try to read them with my screenreader and braille display I get garbage. There will be a few recognizable words with lots of various symbols and number around them. You can't make any sense out of it and there's no way I could try to read a book this way. I had this problem at first when I just tried to open them from the NLS website. So after reading the question and answer section I discovered how to set up a brf file and I elected to use wordpad. I purchased this beast 11 years ago but times (like the technology for Surround-sound) have changed and the new Pioneer really shoves the Denon set I have into the Dina sore pool, the main reason being that there are several different standards of decoding Surround-Sound content, the Denon only handled Dolby PRO-LOGIC format whereas the Pioneer handles that and More, I've been re-mastering allot of 4-channel cartridges using my cartridge player I have here and converting them to the Dolby DTS format, put them onto a CD and play them back through the DVD connected to the digital port of the Pioneer and you open up a whole new world of audio and you transport yourself back to the days of QUAD sound in the 70s, only difference is that it sounds allot better now than it did then. DETAILS Now down to the details, I purchased this receiver as part of a HOME THEATRE IN A BOX pack which Pioneer are still selling, the pack contained the receiver with 6 speakers, (2 rear, 1 centre, 2 front and a 100-watt sub-woofer). Placement of the speakers took some time but I now have them placed about the lounge area so I can enjoy the affect of them all when I'm sitting in my favorite armchair. All speakers connect to the Receiver vi cables and clip terminals, I'm not particularly happy with this idea, I would have preferred binding posts, the clips mean that you have to be a bit careful about the thickness of the speaker cable you use. Ok, a first glance of the manual, the manual is in 3 languages (including English), Pioneer tell you that before making any connections that you're to connect the receiver to the power and go through the QUICK SETUP menu, this menu is accessed by its own button on the front of the receiver and all menu content is displayed in the display of the unit rather than on a TV screen as some manufacturers insist on doing. The other good thing is that the options for the menu appear n the order as stated in the manual so it's a matter of selecting the options you want, pressing enter, changing the option and pressing enter twice to confirm your setting. Only a few options available here, one to set the surround mode you wish to use and the other to select the number of speakers you're planning to use (you can set anything from 3 to 6). If you only have a standard 2-speaker configuration for stereo then don't panic, this receiver works well in stereo mode, ready for you to expand at a later stage. Navigating through the menu choices is done by using the jog-dial on the front panel. Once all connections have been made and you have the receiver up and running, you may consider making further adjustments to fine-tune your system in the ADVANCED SETUP menu, these adjustments include distance between front and centre speakers, distance between where you're sitting and speakers, sub-woofer frequency thresholds etc. If you don't want to rely on the menu system then you can make the necessary adjustments by using the test-tone facility offered (use your own ears). CONNECTIONS This receiver can take a host of devices through a vast array of connections at the rear, amongst the various inputs/outputs you'll find connections for a VCR or DVR (which ever you like), DVD (inputs for 6 analog channels if required), CD, TV/Satellite receiver and cassette deck/Minidisc Recorder etc. The video side boasts composite inputs and outputs as well as S-Vhs, I was a little disappointed that the receiver didn't have any component video inputs/outputs but this is overcome by wiring the DVD players component video outputs directly to the TV'S component video inputs. The receiver has 2 digital inputs, (one is a toslink fiber-optic and the other a coaxial

Re: ACCESSIBILITY OF KURZWEIL KEYBOARDS
Hi, I haven't seen a Kurzweil keyboard for several years, but the one I did see was fairly accessable. However, I don't know which Yamaha keyboards you have been looking at, but the DGX500 is a very accessable keyboard. It is an 88 note keyboard with all the midi capabilities. The keypad does allow you to move through the different voicing, rhythm styles and you can go directly to the voice you want, such as guitar or strings, once you know the number. Just punch in 24 and you have that voice. It has a six track sequencer and disk drive. The cost is very reasonable around $600 from Sam Ash catalog. Hope that gives you something else to consider. Then, tab to new. Hit alt so you're in the menus and right-arrow to edit. DVD Delimma
Hi All, Well, I haven't messed with DVD's yet, but I've decided now's the time. So, where do I start. I have the following questions. 1. Is it better and easier to simplay play DVD's on the computer since you already have the screenreader, and how well does the screenreader work with them? 2. If using the computer, which software is best? Windows Media player, Winamp, or some other one? 3. If not using the computer, which of the portable or stereo component ones are the most accessable. I want to be able to burn and play cd's, mp3's, wma's and as many type of audio files as possible. Plus, of course, playing DVD movies and concerts. I already have a DVD drive and CD-RW drive as well as Jaws on my computer. So if I purchase a separate unit I want to get the most practical one possible. All advice will be greatly appreciated. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, October 30, 2004 11:14 AM Subject: Re: WinMx Paul and Kristen, First of all, Winmx works pretty well even without scripts, though I do appreciate the added functionality of the scripts. One tip if you decide to try without the scripts is that you might consider the verbosity option of turning on foreground colors so that you can tell the state of your uploads and downloads. In other words, if a particular file is identified with cyan, it means the file has been successfully/completely downloaded, green means it is still in progress, red means it has stopped and is incomplete etc. Hope this helps. Paul, I'm using JAWS 4.02 and Windows 98. For the most part I can use the PC cursor except to enter on a download link or a context item within the transfers window. I'm not sure how much this varies from system to system or with OS or screenreader and version, but I am quite used to it and have not found it to be a problem beyond the initial adjustment of learning the program. I guess it depends on how comfortable folks are with the JAWS cursor in general--in this instance I would not say the program is inaccessible for that reason. Re: Looking for new musical keyboard
Hello, I would highly recommend the Yamaha DGX500 or the new DGX505. First of all, it is a full 88 note keyboard. Secondly it has MIDI capability. The controls are layed out in an extremely logical and easy to memorize order. It has 135 different rhythm patterns and 619 different voices. The Yamaha grand piano is very good. The strings and guitars aare good also as well as the flutes. It has auto accompaniments, a disk drive and 100 prerecorded songs. It is very blind friendly and you can order it through Sam Ash music for a little over $500. The new DGX505 has some additional features one of which is a USB connection so you can connect directly to the computer and download or upload MIDI files. I don't know about the price, however, but I wouldn't think it would be too much more than the 500. If you get the 500, I'd be happy to send you the control layout that I have written up. If I can help further, I'd be happy to do so. I am in the market for a new musical keyboard with of course midi capabilities to interface with my computer, but I would also like it to have automatic accompaniment features. Something with lots of styles and good sounding instruments. Above all, something as easy as possible to use as the old grey matter doesn't work as well as it used to so the fewer key presses and menus I have to remember, the better. I am looking for something fairly sophisticated with lots of sampled sounds, so I am willing to spend up to $1000. If anyone can recommend something they have had experience with that fits the bill, I'd be most grateful. Also, if someone out there has the subscribe info for the midi-mag list, I have questions that would probably be more appropriate for that group. So far I have looked at a Yamaha PSR450 and a Korg PA50. The PSR450 did not have as many dedicated buttons as I would like, so practically everything like instruments and styles had to be entered via a numeric keypad. The Korg PA50 I kind of like so far, but it is very difficult to know whether or not it is difficult to use in a showroom. Any advice appreciated. I would also like to eventually interface the keyboard with my laptop. Re: Cd recorder that can make copies of CD's
Hi All, The way you solve this problem is to explain to the salesman that he/she can't possibly know what it's going to take for you to be able to use the specific piece of equipment. Insist on at least 30 days to experiment with it in your home under your particular conditions and circumstances, and make sure you can return it if it is either inaccessable or does not live up to your expectations. I have a stand-alone Tascam cd burner, which is very accessable and works very well. However, it does not copy as it has only one tray but I get great recordings of my vinyl with it and I can then copy on the computer. It was rather expensive though, but it's a very good unit. Kris Hickerson - Original Message - From: mimi [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, October 09, 2004 9:47 AM Subject: Re: Cd recorder that can make copies of CD's There is no way anyone can tell a blind person if a CD recorder will be accessible to them. The only thing I have found useful and accessible is the CD burner program and the use of a burner on the computer. I had a bad deal with a stand-alone recorder and took it back to the store only to be told there was nothing wrong with it. After I bought a CD burner two years ago I discovered why the stand-alone does not record: The record tray is in the wrong side of the machine. That's right: The wrong side. There is no way I can fix that, and to take it somewhere else to get that fixed, they'll charge you $75 before they even open it up. I think it's ridiculous. I called Aiwa to tell them I have a defective stand-alone recorder, and nobody believes me. It is not accessible to a blind person, and I had those people tell me several times how to do this and do that to get it to record, but it's no good if the record tray is in the wrong side of the machine to begin with. That's why I'll never buy anything at Fry's Electronics anymore. But I also realize it could have happened somewhere else. So, I just use it as a backup CD player. Anyone working in any electronics store would not know if everything would be accessible or useful for a blind person. Unfortunately, you have to check it out yourself and probably lose money in the long run. I lost $250 on this rotten deal. If I had known I should have gotten a CD burner in the first place for the computer, I would not have monkeyed around with a stand-alone. Re: rhapsody
Hi Guys, I have something from my cable company, which is Charter Communications, that they call Charter Rhapsody. I'm assuming it is the same program you're discussing. I never have been able to get it to do anything. What's it supposed to do for you? Oh, I know, it's some kind of a music package, but is it really worth the trouble? I, too, am running JAWS, George, so if you can offer any tips, I'd appreciate it. You can contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks much. I would appreciate hearing how people manage to get to the edit box to type in the artist you are seeking. Before, i clicked on the third occurrence of the word artist in the rhapsody application window, but that no longer works for me. any help will be greatly appreciated. If like me folks are having issues with its access since the new version, maybe we should contact them directly by mail or phone? If so, let's organize this effort off this list. Re: Updated JAWS scripts for Chatterbox
Hi All, Sorry to be so stupid, but what is chatter box and, if I decide I want it, where do I get it? Thanks. It's pretty sure that in the near future we will all be upgrading to the next version of ChatterBox. Many of us found out that our current scripts don't work with the new ChatterBox. That's why Doug and I (especially Doug Lee) have worked quickly to rewrite those parts of the scripts that don't work in the new client. We have finished a brand new package of scripts that work with both the old client and the new one. In addition, this new script set corrects a couple of minor bugs that were in the July 25 scripts. Whether you have the old ChatterBox client or the new one, we suggest you install this new script set that will surely smooth the upgrade to the new client. As always, you can read about what's new in the scripts by going to http://www.vocal-computing.com/whatsnew.htm Or you can go directly to the scripts page and click on the appropriate link for your version of JAWS by going to http://www.vocal-computing.com/cbscripts.htm Thanks for everyone's patience. *** END FORWARDED MESSAGE *** Regards Steve, mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype: steve1963 MSN Messenger: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Real Player
Hi All, I have RealOne player and I'm assuming that is not the same as RealPlayer, right? But it comes with XP so it's there. Would you recommend RealPlayer 10, and, if so, where do I get it? Hi all, Can anyone tell me why some, not all, of the messages in my inbox are being labelled as unread when I have read them?
