Thanks.

I recently noticed the progress bar looks different on Youtube. So I tried
turning the Jaws virtual pc cursor off with Jawskey z and you know what? I
could move forward and back with right and left arrows and move volume and
up with up and down arrows. I don't think this ever worked so well before.
I didn't even have to rout the cursor or get focus on any controls.

The only way I could get it to work was to tab down to some control after
the subscribe button and just before the mute button. JFW didn't say
anything when I got to this control. Once I tabbed to this control, I
turned

off the JFW cursor with insert+z, and then the arrow keys worked as
described below. Note I was using JFW 12 with IE 8 on a Windows XP system.

Hello Robert and list: Are you saying that it is possible (using one sound

interfere with what you're recording? If this be the case, that's something

Hello Listers,

I have just joined this list and I need some help with Total Recorder
7.1. I am also running Jaws 10.0.
When I ran Total Recorder before, also with Jaws 10, there was a setting
that would allow me to record from the sound card without hearing Jaws in
the background. I've gone through the record wizzard in Total Recorder,
and all I am able to do is record Jaws along with whatever else is
playing through the sound card, such as an Internet stream.

I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

Hello List Members,
I am addressing this to Tom.
I am using Switch and Wave Pad and a few other peaces of software from
NCH.
It is like George told you, if you go in to control panel and add and
remove programs and in to Switch.

And click on add or remove program.
Right there, you will find a set of radio buttons.
One of those, is labeled, downgrade to free version.
Click on that, and that message and or dialog will go away for good.
Yay though I'm using an older version of the software, I've never had any
problems with it after I done that.

Hope this helps you all.
My best regards.
 John.

Hi list: Concerning my switch thing..I did as John and maybe others

The Editing functions available in Total Recorder Professional edition
are nothing to be laughed at though, quite a bit of good stuff in there
which would probably suffice most people in their audio editing jobs let
the truth be told smile.

Thoughts?

Hi folks!

Its been a while since I've played with Goldwave as I prefer to use
Amadeus Pro on the Mac but it doesn't hurt to have fingers in the

job where noise reduction in parts was required as part of the audio
editing, I can handle this stuff quite easily with Amadeus Pro but as
I'd never given the noise reduction function in Goldwave a go before
I thought that the ideal opportunity was presenting itself.

To be frank I was amazed at the quality of the result I got for a
first try and I'm prepared to stand by the claim I'm about to make
and that is the Noise reduction functions of Goldwave rival those
which are part of more expensive products such as Sound Forge.
Furthermore, the sections in the manual describing how the noise
reduction system in Goldwave works are incredibly well written
without boring anyone to sleep so all one has to do if they want to
try the noise reduction function is to read for a minute or so and
the have the basic knowledge required to get started.

So what's Goldwave worth these days, $59.00 or thereabouts? Damn good
value for money and I'd almost be tempted to say its a Giveaway!
when one also considers its many built-in powerful functions and the
fact that the author has gone out of his way to make this product
accessible.

Hello list: I seem to recall someone posting (at least I think it was

Hello Larry,
I have an account on LIVE 365,
But when I log in to it, I can't get at any of my presets.
I had allot of jazz stations presat so that I could listen to them anytime
I got ready to listen to them.

Now being a JFW user, I feel that, that has been taken away from us.
I haven't tried it on my Mack system yet, but I will do that sometime this
evening and report back to the list about my findings.

My best regards.

Subject: Live 365, new Website less accessible?

I own a station and have a VIP membership at Live 365. So I am concerned
with what I see as accessibility issues arising from the recent roll out
of the the new Live 365 website. As a Mac user, I'm wondering if,
especially windows users, are noticing something similar to what I'm
seeing.

Most important, the play button formerly in place to launch individual
station streams has been removed, to be replaced by an image which is not
spoken by Voiceover. This applies to the specific stream being promoted
on any given Live 365 station page. So, for instance,if someone using
Voiceover surfs to my page, they can't access my station's stream. Is it
the same with a windows screen reader?

Further, some of the other links on individual station pages don't seem
to work. For one thing, the link to my presets page, though spoken by
Voiceover, does not work when the proper keyboard command is executed.

I'm not going to promote my station here, as this is not the proper venue
for it. But I am concerned that blind listeners may be experiencing
problems when trying to listen to a Live 365 stream, such as mine. The
website makeover took place in the last couple of days. So, since the new
site was introduced, has anybody besides me noticed a problem in
accessing individual streams and links while using a screen reader?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Larry

once I find the place I know I want to record, I'll shut Jaws down; then
start recording the thing I want to record; works just fine!!

Hello Kevin and list: I use Total Recorder to record streams from the
internet (I'm using Total Recorder 7.1)..but they've upgraded since then.
The program costs close to eighteen dollars (if you're want Total Recorder

it. Another program I've heard about (but don't have and haven't used)..is
Audacity. HTH!

when you're in that uninstall option, you have 2 choices, the first one is

Hi Tom and list.

I agree with Jörgen that the best way to uninstall an app is via the
add/remove programs option in Windows CTRL panel. While even this software
de-installation process may leave traces of program code in the Windows
registry, the process is usually smoother and less problematic than using
the program's uninstall component. Not to be cynical, but think of it this
way. The software developer is not necessarily going to make it easy for a
dissatisfied customer to get rid of his/her/its prized software app.

that youdon't have to be worry about the trialversion anymore, and you can
use it as long as you like.
hope this helps.

Subject: Problems With Switch

Hello list: Hopefully this won't be too long of a post..but I'm confused
and frustrated at this point! As you may recall, I downloaded the Switch
sound converter to my computer. I haven't used it that much..but I
apparently mistakenly have gotten the paid version! This isn't what I
wanted; anyhow..the trial time period elapsed! A few minutes ago, I
tried to use it and it let me know that I had to register it and
pay..which I don't want to do as I had understood it was free! So I
figured I'd try to uninstall all the extra stuff..you know..Sound Recorder
and something else that I don't remember; that went okay! Aw..but now
when I try to uninstall Switch..(was going to uninstall (then go and
reinstall switch without the extras..but..oh no! It tells me it cannot
be uninstalled because, someone on my computer is using the program NOBODY
IS USING THE DAMMED PROGRAM BUT ME! So can somebody please tell me how to
get around this? I think I would like to use the pr
ogram as I have a file I want to change the bit rate on (Total Recorder
doesn't seem to be allowing me to set it to a bit rate that will allow it
to play where I want it to)..anyhow..this doggone Switch..makes me want
to Switch it off! Thanks for reading what has turned out to be a kind
of long post; hopefully you won't mind!

Question About Trial Version Of Gold Wave

2010-07-14 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello again list: Got another one for ya; this time, it's about Gold Wave; my
question is basically this: if you have the trial version of Gold Wave, will
it let you convert files or change bit rate? Also..does it work as good as
switch? For example, does it give you as many bit rates to choose from as
Switch? BTW-I did get Switch to do what I needed it to do! It's really not
that hard; it was just that my thick head didn't quite understand the
instructions correctly! Thanks to all who responded to that post!
Tom Kaufman P.S. The alt-A thing does work..so does the F3..but as far as
I can determine, none of the buttons (at least with the version of Switch that
I have)..will do anything!

Re: Archived Eddy Stubbs programs

2010-06-30 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello Don and anyone else interested: As far as I can tell, there are no
Eddie Stubbs programs archived! In fact, I would guess that..even if
there were some, it'd be hard to access them easily! I've written to WSM
about this..but so far, they don't seem to be doing anything about this
problem! Currently, if you go to the WSM archived page; then click on the
appropriate thing, you get a player; this player (to me anyhow..and I'm
running Jaws 11)..really doesn't give you much of a way to tell which
program you're dealing with! I have been able to click programs..using the
mouse. But is hard to tell which program I'm clicking! Sorry if this is a
bit off-topic! But Don..you've got me started now--GRRR!

Re: Veronica FM transmitter

2010-06-26 Thread Tom Kaufman
I don't know about newer Ccrane units..but in older ones like I have, that
range thing can be adjusted! I have a Ccrane that I've had for five or
six years now..and I can pretty much listen in any room of this house with
no real problem! True: it wasn't that way right out of the box..but there

Yes it works quite well. Sound is good and the range is quite good. Also
is very easy to set up. At the time I bought it which I think was about
four years ago it cost about $330 with the modifications and I think the
price has now gone up by about $45 or so.
But of course the up side is you get something that works well and isn't
junk which most of the low priced units are.
The Ccrane unit for example sounds good but has a hard time clearing a
single room so in my opinion it is a complete waste of money.

I think you should also determine the legality at your location and
whether you would want to be illegal. In the US, I think there's a
power limit; not sure what it is. Penalties used to be pretty stiff.
I don't know if that's still the case.

Three other questions if I may. Is there a pot on the transmitter

High Tom,
When you first bring up Switch, tab over to where it says, browse
button.

After you get there, hit either the space bar or the inter key.
After that, it will allow you to place the files in wherever folder in
any place on your computer.
After you've selected the folder you want the files to go in to, just
tab over to the ok button and hit either the space bar or the inter key
and then tab over to the convert button and hit the space bar on it.

Now, Switch will convert the files and save them in to that folder.
Hope this helps.
My best regards.

When you brought up Switch, When you tab over, you should have saw
something that says, output folder combo box: my documents, 1 of 5,

And as for the inner workings of the file, if you tab over to that

Right there is where the stereo joint stereo and force stereo options

Also, tabbing over just once more will get you to the bit rate

Hope this helps.

High Tom,
Highlight the file by having the curser pointing at it.
Go in to your file menu and scroll down to Switch.
Tab over to where it says file options or something rather like
that.

Hit the space bar.
You will see a list of file types.
If the default file isn't .mp3, then scroll up or down until you get
to that one.
It also gives you the option to set the bit rate and stereo joint
stereo or force stereo.
After you have done this, then tab over to ok, hit the space bar.
then tab over to the convert button and hit the space bar again.

At this point, Switch will start converting the file to .mp3.
But now that Switch is sat to convert files to .mp3, you can follow
the steps above.
But only, you will hit the F3 key to start Switch to converting
files to .mp3.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.
 John

High Tom,
When you first bring up Switch, tab over to where it says, browse
button.
After you get there, hit either the space bar or the inter key.
After that, it will allow you to place the files in wherever
folder in
any place on your computer.
After you've selected the folder you want the files to go in to,
just
tab over to the ok button and hit either the space bar or the
inter key
and then tab over to the convert button and hit the space bar on
it.
Now, Switch will convert the files and save them in to that
folder.
Hope this helps.
My best regards.
 John.

Hello Tom,
Did you save a back up copy of the software on your computer?
If you did, you may have to uninstall and reinstall the software in order
to fix the problem.

Try doing that and see if it helps things for you.
If you need anymore help, please let me know, and I'll see what I can do
for you.

My best regards.

High Tom,
Highlight the file by having the curser pointing at it.
Go in to your file menu and scroll down to Switch.
Tab over to where it says file options or something rather like that.
Hit the space bar.
You will see a list of file types.
If the default file isn't .mp3, then scroll up or down until you get
to that one.
It also gives you the option to set the bit rate and stereo joint
stereo or force stereo.
After you have done this, then tab over to ok, hit the space bar. then
tab over to the convert button and hit the space bar again.

At this point, Switch will start converting the file to .mp3.
But now that Switch is sat to convert files to .mp3, you can follow
the steps above.
But only, you will hit the F3 key to start Switch to converting files
to .mp3.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.
 John.

Tab over to where it says file options or something rather like that.
Hit the space bar.
You will see a list of file types.
If the default file isn't .mp3, then scroll up or down until you get to
that one.
It also gives you the option to set the bit rate and stereo joint stereo
or force stereo.
After you have done this, then tab over to ok, hit the space bar. then tab
over to the convert button and hit the space bar again.

At this point, Switch will start converting the file to .mp3.
But now that Switch is sat to convert files to .mp3, you can follow the
steps above.
But only, you will hit the F3 key to start Switch to converting files to
.mp3.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.

High Tom,
When you brought up Switch, When you tab over, you should have saw
something that says, output folder combo box: my documents, 1 of 5, alt
plus I.
And as for the inner workings of the file, if you tab over to that area,
it will say, encoder options.

Right there is where the stereo joint stereo and force stereo options are.
Also, tabbing over just once more will get you to the bit rate settings.
Hope this helps.

There is a limit of capacity in both cases. However, dropbox allows a
minimum of 2 gb capacity. Whereas, sendspace only allows 300 mb which is
pitiful in my opinion.

With Dropbox the files can be shared in a couple of ways and they are, you
can either set up and share a folder between people or you can send a link
to a list such as this for people to click on and download the content
that you wish to share with them.

Hope this helps.

In terms of anyone's direct experience, how does Dropbox compare in

I still agree with Tom. Just because IE8 works better with WMP than IE7
doesn't mean that every IE8 question is a fair question for this list. I'm
having trouble with Roboform recognizing forms automatically when I'm
using
IE8, but I don't think that's a fair question for this list, even though
IE8

may work better with WMP than IE7 or because I use a screen reader with a
speech synthesizer when using IE8 and Roboform.

Also freedom of speech doesn't apply to a moderated mailing list, at least
not if you're talking about the US constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Freedom of speech is to prevent the government from squashing the free
expression of ideas; it doesn't apply to a moderator doing his job on a
list

people voluntarily join. Remember everyone agrees to the list rules when
they join a moderated mailing list.

Finally, it wasn't Tom's fault that someone told him what he could do with
his list. Tom didn't do anything wrong, and in fact was very tactful in
his
post. I've seen moderators with much less tact than Tom. That post
reflects
more the irresponsibility and immaturity of the person who posted it than
it

does anything about Tom.

Hello Tom,
Maybe you need to rethink the way you do some things.
A blind guy had a problem with internet explorer 8.
If you really done your home work on it, you would have learned, that
internet explorer 8 does a better job of letting you listen to live
streaming audio via the net.
Internet Explorer 8 has a way better user face with Windows Media Player
and

Winamp then Internet Explorer 7.
I don't know too much about how to use that, so I'll leave that up to
someone else to explain that to you.
This is why I said you need to broaden your view because your views are a
little too narrow.
And to add insult to injury, you didn't even let that message show upon
the
list so that other people could read it and decide for themselves if
rather

they agree with me on it or not.
So in that regard, you are in error because you are violating people's
right

to freedom of speech.
Now don't get mad, I'm just telling it like it is.
Lighten up a little!
If you done that, you wouldn't have people getting mad at you and telling
you to take this list and shove it up your but.
Take care!

Ladies and gentlemen,

The message posted by Christopher Chaltain a few hours ago
states perfectly the purpose for this list and he says it
much better than I can.

I do not intend to insult or be critical of anyone. My only
intent is to keep messages posted to this list relevant to
audio software, hardware and closely related subjects. The
list was started eleven or twelve years ago by Jonathan Mosen
specifically for discussing working with audio on a computer.

A few years ago I set up a poll asking the membership if they
would want the subject matter of the list to be expanded to
include consumer audio products, since these products are
often used in conjunction with a computer, and a large
percentage of those who voted said yes, so, now messages
about audio receivers, amplifiers etc. are permitted.

There are approximately five hundred subscribers to this
list. I think we who post to the list should be considerate
of those subscribers who are here because it's an audio
related list and not cause an increase of list traffic
discussing issues and subjects that are off topic.

Thank you,

Tom, list administrator.

Can Windows Copy CDs?

2010-05-28 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello list: I know that AI can use Windows to burn something that is already
on a hard drive to a CD; what I wonder is..let's say I want to copy one CD to
another; can this be accomplished with Windows..or with Windows Media Player?
And if so..how is this done? I have something on my computer called
Sonic..but found it pretty much inaccessible with Jaws..unless I just never
found anyone who could show me how to do it! So I have deleted the shortcut
that was on my desk top; all I have now of Sonic is the program itself..but it
really doesn't lead me to where I need to go to copy a CD! Since I have no
other CD burning program on here, I got to thinking Hey..maybe it's possible
to just use the Windows Media Player: to do this..but I am sure that there are
folks here on this list who can tell me if this is doable with that program or
not! Thanks!

F8 and F9 raises and lowers volume; right off the top of my head, don't

WMP may be muted, I think f8 mutes and unmutes but it might be f7 or f9.
I have another version. Keep tabbing till you hear the mute and volume
controls. They are independent of the Windows mixer.

Also check tools, options, devices tab, speakers, properties,; to set
output if you have more than one sound card.

I agree, it's strange that rewind is disabled in WMP and we have to use a
seek bar that has no direct hot keys or even a quick way to bring the
slider to focus.

It's listed in the Winamp preferences in the file types list. When I
click on an AVI file in Windows Explorer, Winamp is the media player
that comes up and plays it. Did you install the lite or standard
version of Winamp? I don't know if that makes a difference or not. Did
you make sure that all of the file type support was installed when you

I'm also pretty sure that WMP supports fast forwarding and rewinding

don't typically use WMP though, so I can't be sure. Does fast
forwarding and rewinding in WMP work for you on other file types? My
biggest gripe with WMP is that I can't figure out how to control the
amount you jump in a file. I think it's based on a percent of the
overall length of the file.

Re: NLS BOOK QUESTIONS

2010-05-19 Thread Tom Kaufman
Well..here in Maryland, from what I'm told, even the folks who work in the
state library in Baltimore get the standard version! I attended a
demonstration on these machines when some of the folks from the library came
to Easton, MD. to put on the demonstration..we all were given a chance to
sign up for a player (I chose the advanced model)..this was back in August.
After not hearing anything for several months, I called the library; they
said they'd get one sent right out..at which point, I said now this will be
the advanced one..right? oh no..we don't have any of those! To which
I replied, well I am on the list to. (the gal interrupted Oh we don't have
those lists anymore; we threw those away! Although they wouldn't come
right out and say it, I got the feeling that it was either I take the
standard or nothing! So I decided (after thinking about it for a day or
two and after emailing someone I know who works there)..that I'd do well to
take the standard player..it may be (as I was told).that I could call in
about six months or so and..they may have them! So that's my story up until
now; the standard player works well..but I still wouldn't mind having an
advanced version at some point in time! Maybe it'll happen someday!

Strange Windows Media Thing

2010-05-16 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello List: Have had something strange happen recently..and it's happened
twice: there was a station I wanted to hear that uses Windows Media to stream
their audio. When I decided I had listened as long as I wanted, I hit my
alt-F4 to stop the stream and close out Windows Media. Well now..while
Windows Media seemed to go away, the stream did not! I was back on my desk
top..and found myself looking around to find how to get to the stream to stop
it..but could not! This happened again with a different station that also uses
Windows Media to stream their audio; same experience: when I went to close it
out, the stream kept on going..although Windows Media was gone! The only way
to stop it (as far as I could tell)..is to restart the computer! Can somebody
please tell me what is happening here? I'm using Jaws 11, running Windows XP
Home with Service pack 3; the sound card is an Audigy 2 (think I'm right on
this)..hopefully I have provided enough information to you so you can figure
out what is going on here! It's very strange when you know (or at least you
_think_ you know that you have closed out the player..but the stream plays
on..with no way to stop it!

Looking For Some Information Concerning NLS Player

2010-05-03 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello List: I realize that this isn't Bard Talk (I'm not on that list)..but I
know that some of you use the NLS players..and maybe you can tell me if you've
run into this: I apparently forgot to turn my player off last night! This
shouldn't be a problem, since it's supposed to shut itself off if not playing a
book..right? Apparently not! Last night, I think it still had fifteen hours
left. But today when I started to listen to a book, it informed me that it
only had an hour! But it didn't even give me that much; I had taken the player
out to the porch so I could listen while I took my walk on the treadmill (I had
set the sleep timer for thirty minutes)..well..I actually started about ten
minutes before I took the machine out there...I had been out on the porch,
walking along and listening to my book..when it suddenly said battery low;
player off! And with that, it stopped! So my question is: what's with the
thirty minutes thing (is it..or is it not..supposed to shut itself off if you
stop playing a book..but don't actually turn off the power? If you'd rather
write me offlist concerning this matter, my email is tomca...@comcast.net If
you choose to write me offlist, please put something in the subject line to

makes me a little curious as to what's going on as (according to the
manual..as well as the description on the power button)..if the player is
not in use, it's supposed to shut down to conserve power! If this is not
happening..no big deal..only users should be aware of what's happening (or

Encoder mystery! I searched..and found that there are four occurrences of

There was nothing in the programs menu that indicated that I had it; nor
did I see anything in Add/Remove programs, so I was somewhat mystified! I
know I have recorded and played countless MP3 files..but how could this be
if I didn't have the encoder? Guess it's all in knowing what the exact name
is..and knowing exactly how to go about looking for it! Also..I thought this
was the case concerning Gold Wave (that you couldn't schedule it to record
when you weren't going to be around)..I actually did download what is
supposed to be a trial version of Gold Wave..but haven't done anything
with it yet; I mainly had wanted to get Gold Wave so I would have more
flexibility of changing bit and sample rate in files if I needed to (Total
Recorder will do this)..but as I understand it, Gold Wave will give you more
choices! Is this correct?

as tested by the gurus at Hydrogen Audio. I unzip the packet and copy
the lame.exe file and drop it into the program file, copying over the

I do not recall why this is. But the docs for each program tell you that
you have to install an external codec in order to create mp3 files. In

Hello Tom,
Do you have USB ports in the front of your computer?
If you do, then all you need to do is, plug the flash drive in to one of
those ports, then you can save things to it.

Things like NLS books audio files and so on.
That USB cable is not needed.
The only time you will need to use a USB cable, is when you are using a
cartridge that was specially made for the NLS player.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.

I use my Radio Shack-purchased flash drive all the time without a problem,
and they're both much cheaper and capable of larger memory than those
produced specifically for NLS program. Just avoid SanDisk, which has files

High Randy, No, if you need a flash drive, you will have to buy one. I
found in my experience, that having a cartridge that was made just for
the NLS player, works best. You can get them from: http://www.aph.org But
the only thing is, you'll have to wait until next month. They have them
on back order. Also keep in mind, you will need a USB extension cord in
order to plug those cartridges in to your computer to put anything on
them. Hope this helps. My best regards. John.

The Bookshelf Upgrade

You might want to download several books or magazines to a flash drive
and then listen to any of them in some random order. To do this, your
player must contain a software upgrade that includes the ability to
bookshelf books. Here are the steps needed to upgrade a library digital
book player to the latest software: Obtain the latest software from the
NLS web site: http://www.loc.gov/nls/DTBM/ . There appear on the web page
two links. I suggest you try the first link. If this does not work,
return to the page and download the second link. After you click the link
from the web site and download the file to your computer, extract (unzip)
this file onto a flash drive (thumb drive, etc.) so that the directory
upgrade appears in the root directory of the drive. This procedure is
exactly the same as you use to download a book. Turn on the player.
Insert the flash drive containing the software into the USB port of the
player. The player will announce Upgrading your player's software. Wait
until the upgrade is complete and the player restarts (about 10 seconds),
then remove the flash drive. The upgrade will only occur if the player's
version is older than the version of the software on the cartridge;
reinserting the cartridge will not repeat the upgrade.

You now can erase the files from the flash cartridge that you downloaded
to undertake this upgrade and use the flash cartridge to download books
and magazines.

To employ the bookshelf feature, turn the player on. Press and hold the
Play/Stop button until you hear the narrator announce the activation of
the bookshelf feature. Continue to hold down the Play/Stop button and
press either the FF or the RW arrow-shaped key to either side of the
Play/Stop button. As you push and release these keys, the player will
announce the next title on the flash drive. Once you get to the end of
the titles saved on the drive, you must utilize the other direction key
to toggle back through the titles. In other words, you cannot continue to
use only the FF or the RW key to toggle through the titles in a
circuit-type action. Release the Play/Stop button when you reach the item
to which you desire to listen.

High Randy,
No, if you need a flash drive, you will have to buy one.
I found in my experience, that having a cartridge that was made just for
the NLS player, works best.

You can get them from:
http://www.aph.org
But the only thing is, you'll have to wait until next month.
They have them on back order.
Also keep in mind, you will need a USB extension cord in order to plug
those cartridges in to your computer to put anything on them.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.
 John.

The Bookshelf Upgrade

You might want to download several books or magazines to a flash drive
and then listen to any of them in some random order. To do this, your
player must contain a software upgrade that includes the ability to
bookshelf books. Here are the steps needed to upgrade a library
digital book player to the latest software:

Obtain the latest software from the NLS web site:
http://www.loc.gov/nls/DTBM/ . There appear on the web page two links.
I suggest you try the first link. If this does not work, return to the
page and download the second link.
After you click the link from the web site and download the file to your
computer, extract (unzip) this file onto a flash drive (thumb drive,
etc.) so that the directory upgrade appears in the root directory of
the drive. This procedure is exactly the same as you use to download a
book.

Turn on the player.
Insert the flash drive containing the software into the USB port of the
player.

The player will announce Upgrading your player's software.
Wait until the upgrade is complete and the player restarts (about 10
seconds), then remove the flash drive.
The upgrade will only occur if the player's version is older than the
version of the software on the cartridge; reinserting the cartridge will
not repeat the upgrade.

You now can erase the files from the flash cartridge that you downloaded
to undertake this upgrade and use the flash cartridge to download books
and magazines.

the bookshelf feature.
In other words, you cannot continue
to use only the FF or the RW key to toggle through the titles in a

I'm not sure what you already have Tom since you didn't include the
message
you're replying to, but if you're talking about the cable needed to
connect

a blank NLS cartridge to your PC then you need a standard USB extension
cable. This will have a full sized male connector at one end and a full
size

female connector at the other end. Note that due to the housing on the NLS
cartridge, many USB extension cables aren't going to work, and you may
find
it best to buy a cable from ILA, APH or Perkins especially designed to
work

with the NLS cartridges.

I know this has all been discussed on this list before, but I just saw
this
message today and figured I better clarify. Also, as mentioned on this
list,

the BARD Talk web site is a treasure trove of good information. It's also
well organized and well thought out. I think it will clarify a lot and
won't
appear as contradictory as separate posts to a mailing list may seem to
be.

The URL for the BARD Talk web site is http://www.bardtalk.com/.

Tom, what do you mean it doesn't fit the machine? There's a USB port on
the

right hand side of the machine, it's about half way to the back, right
behind the headphone jack. When the machine is shipped, it'll be covered
with a small plastic cap. The cap just pops off, and the flash drive
should

plug into that port with no problem. A flash drive can only go in one way,
so if you're having trouble with it, you may want to flip it over. Good
luck.

Yeh, it's a USB extension cable. You can further clarify that you need a
full male connector on one end and a full female connector on the other
end.

Note that even if you get a USB extension cable, you may still not be able
to fit the NLS cartridge into the female end because of the limited
clearance on the cartridge.

Most flash drives should work just fine though, although you can also plug
them directly into the NLS player.

Note that even if you get a USB extension cable, you may still not be
able to fit the NLS cartridge into the female end because of the
limited clearance on the cartridge.

Most flash drives should work just fine though, although you can also
plug them directly into the NLS player.

It's supposed to be a USB extender cable..this is what I was told I
needed to ask for; is this not correct? And if not, then what's the
proper name for the type of cord I need?

the flash drive should plug directly into the computer USB port, or
the port on the side of the NLS player. you can keep the cable you
have, you may use it for something else down the road. I don't think
I caught what cable you do have.

Now I guess I have to get a different cable as the guy sold us the
wrong

thing!

Sorry..but I just know nothing about these things! I thought I had
told Mom the right thing as this is what I was told to
get...apparently

not!

Hi Gang: Okay..this is what I have so far: there seems to be
something on one end of the drive that can come off..but do we need
a screw driver or something? Mom and I have both tried to get this
off..no soap! It does appear that once this comes off, I'm in
business! If one of you cares to write me offlist as I don't wish
to tie the list up with this too long! My email is

Thanks!

Good idea! I've actually already emailed him (more to the point..he emailed
me and I emailed him back)..I'm not saying I'll run right out and buy the
thing when it comes out; what I am saying is there'd be a lot of us who'd
like to see a product like this that would be accessible to the blind and
visually impaired!

Re: Where do you download updates to your digital talking book player?

2010-04-04 Thread Tom Kaufman
No; you have to get your flash drives (thumb drives..whatever you want to
call them)..elsewhere; the American Printing House For The Blind has blank
cartridges that you can also use to download books as well! But if I'm not
mistaken, you can get the thumb drives at your local Wal-Mart..or maybe
Best Buys..not sure; bottom line: your library doesn't furnish these
things.

Oops..looks like I'd better get a thumb drive to carry me over then! I
ordered my cartridge from there the other day; was so looking forward to
getting it this week! Looks like that won't happen!

Don and list: From what I've read and heard from other people..the players
will hold more than 2-gig; Christopher is right about the Bardtalk website
as a wealth of information can be found there! I guess I just need to
physically see these cords to know if I have the right thing or not! Thanks
to all for your input thus far!

I may be wrong; however, I do not think that the NLS player can handle
capacities larger than 2 gigs.
