Hello,

If you go to:

You'll see, along with other information about the station, an audio
feed. Right-click on the URL, copy it to the clipboard, then paste it
into Tapin. Unfortunately it looks like you'll have to do this each
time you want to listen, as they use a form of stream authentication.
Your results may vary, give it a try.

Exact Audio Copy also supports AccurateRip, and is accessible and free.
I'm a big fan of the dBpoweramp Music Converter, but if you're looking
for a fully-featured CD ripper, you don't need to spend any money on it.
Exact Audio Copy's only downside is that configuring it for the most

I assume you're pasting the books onto the memory stick. Two things to try:

1. Open the View menu, select Sort By, and confirm that the first

2. Press F5 to refresh the folder view. By default, pasted files and

This is not the default behaviour in a new installation of foobar2000.
The left and right arrow keys will only perform this function if you set
them up that way in Preferences as I described in an earlier email,
otherwise they will do nothing. As

foobar2000 doesn't have this functionality built in by default, however
you can install the Seekbox plug-in and assign a keyboard shortcut to
it. Get it from:
http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_seek_box

> I'd also like to know weather there are keys for moving forward and backward

foobar makes no assumptions about what keyboard shorrtcuts you may and
may not want, so the only ones it ships with as standard are things like
Control+O to open a file. You can follow my instructions to add
whichever hotkeys you would like; take a look through the tree view of
assignable actions to learn what is possible. To quickly answer your
question, yes, you can assign some keys to jump forwards and backwards
through a file.

> And another question: Is it possible to save the settings i.e. the assigned

Yes it is. If you're running an installed copy of foobar2000, you will
find a file called Core.cfg in %appdata%\foobar2000\configuration (paste
this into the Run dialog to open the folder). If you copy this file
into the same location on another computer, all your foobar2000
settings, including keyboard shortcuts, will take effect on that computer.

Re: Foobar?

2014-03-07 Thread James Scholes
Casey wrote:
> Hi can someone please post how to make hot key or short cut keys for

Open the Preferences dialog with Control+P. Press K to get to Keyboard
Shortcuts in the tree view. You'll then see the following controls:
- A list of defined hotkeys and their actions;
- Add/Remove buttons;
- a tree view of actions you can assign hotkeys to divided into
categories plus an edit field to filter these actions;
- a hotkey field where you press the keys you want to be assigned; and
- a Global hotkey check box which controls whether the hotkey should
take effect when outside the foobar2000 window.

To add a new hotkey, for example X to play as in Winamp:
1. Activate the Add new button.
2. Shift+Tab back to the list of defined hotkeys and you should be
focussed on the new entry you've just added. Depending on which screen
reader you're using, you should hear something like:
"; Global: no; Type: ; Action: "
Every time you press the Add new button, the newly added unassigned
entry is focussed automatically in the list so you don't need to repeat
this step for every ke you add once you've got to grips with the layout
of the Keyboard Shortcuts screen.
3. Tab past the Add/Remove buttons and the filter box and in the tree
view of assignable actions, navigate to: [main] > Playback.
Alternatively you can type "playback" in the filter box and then select
Play.
4. Tab once to the hotkey field — this field isn't correctly labelled so
you will actually hear a description of the chosen action, in this case
the description will be: "Starts playback".
5. Press the letter X.
6. Activate the OK button to close Preferences or the Apply button if
you want to add more hotkeys.
7. When you've added all the hotkeys you want, add something to your
playlist and try them out.

Hint: there are a lot of actions by default, and any plug-ins you
install can also add actions to foobar2000. This allows you to create a
very powerful keyboard layout. For example, unlike in Winamp, you can
add different hotkeys to jump back and forward by different lengths of time.

One other thing to keep in mind: Unlike Winamp, foobar2000 actually has
a pretty standard, accessible user interface, and you will need to use
the arrow keys to navigate your playlists, the media library if you
choose to use it, etc. Thus, it's best not to assign any actions to these.

HTH.

Accessibility of Spotiamp (new Winamp-style Spotify client for Windows)

2013-12-22 Thread James Scholes
Just in time for Winamp's untimely demise, Spotify has
announced Spotiamp, a Spotify client for Windows built by one of its
engineers. It's "a small tribute to honour the great legacy of Winamp,"
the company says, and lets you play your music within the comfort of
everybody's favorite jukebox app.
- Source: The Verge
<http://www.theverge.com/2013/12/22/5235456/spotify-debuts-spotiamp-app-winamp-streaming>

Spotiamp Accessibility

Screen reader: NVDA (Next branch)

I extracted spotiamp.exe from the portable archive and ran it. When you
first launch the app, the login dialog appears. This is completely
accessible with labels for the two text fields (not that you'd need
them). Your username and password (the latter encrypted) are stored in
your config file (spotiamp.ini); you are not given an option to change this.

Once you've successfully logged in, the Spotiamp main window is brought
into focus. Screen and object view, as well as the NVDA OCR add-on,
fail to get anything useful from this screen. According to the Spotiamp
website, there is also a button in the main window to access your own
Spotify playlists. I haven't found a way to accessibly activate this yet.

There is a Winamp-style main menu, even if it is sloppily implemented.
To access it with NVDA, use object navigation to find the System menu
and right-click it. This contains the program's limited list of
settings and reveals some hotkeys. From this menu and my own
observations, here are the useful hotkeys that work in the program:
Ctrl+L - Switch Account
Ctrl+S - Search
Z/X/C/V/Space/Arrow keys - Same functions as in Winamp
Ctrl+P - Seems to hide (not toggle) the playlist view that opens when
you perform a search
Ctrl+V - Paste album/playlist/track URIs into the main window for playback

The search dialog is accessible. It has tab auto-completion and thus
you can't navigate to the Search (default) and Cancel buttons. These
have hotkeys, however. The text which is filled in by auto-completion
is read when Tab is pressed. Pasting Spotify track, album or artist
URIs into this dialog results in a blank playlist*.

*Update: You can paste URIs directly into the main window simply by
pressing Ctrl+V. Pasting a track, album or playlist URI will play the
content straight away, while artist URIs don't trigger any apparent change.

The playlist view, as you would expect, displays the list of search
results. Object navigation is again useless here. Screen review sees a
list of partial track names and durations, but routing the mouse to one
and left/right clicking does nothing. To start playback after
performing a search, press Enter. It's probably best to close the
playlist view with Ctrl+P after doing this.

Some notes:
If you perform a new search while a track is playing, but don't press
enter in the playlist view, the results from that new search will be
queued anyway and your current playlist replaced.
Some hotkeys, as well as Alt+F4, do not work in the playlist view.
First letter navigation doesn't work in the playlist view either.

This information is blatently false. When version 6 was released, they

DVD Audio Extractor is, in my experience, great software and definitely
worth the money. It's accessible, does exactly what it says on the tin

user-friendly tools, but DVD Audio Extractor ties it all together in a
convenient, easy-to-use package.

As for alternative, similar applications, I honestly haven't tried any,
but nor have I felt the need to so make of that what you will. The only
feature I wish DVD Audio Extractor had was the ability to name and tag
individual titles, which would come in useful when ripping box sets, but
it's no great hardship using something like Mp3tag to get the job done
afterwards. There is a fully-functional 30-day trial of DVD AE
available, so give it a spin and see what you think.

Re: Help needed with last.fm

2012-06-10 Thread James Scholes
You misunderstood what I was saying. My point was that as a streaming service
primarily, Spotify has a much larger library of streamable tracks than Last.fm.
Last.fm has quite a vast selection, yes, but I was making a distinction between
streamable and non-streamable tracks. Last.fm is, in my opinion, better than
Pandora at recommending new music and helping me discover it on my own through
manual browsing because of the huge amount of user-contributed content that is
added, through scrobbling and wiki submissions, everyday. So you can be
recommended artists and tracks even if Last.fm don't have them available to
stream. That is an advantage it has over Pandora.

I can't really compare Pandora and Last.fm's library of streamable music, as not
living in the US I don't use Pandora that often. When I did try it, I found
that a lot of the music it was recommending were artists popular in the North
American market, and not a lot of it was to my tastes. But as a user of both
Spotify and Last.fm, I can say with certainty that Spotify's catalogue is much
more extensive, which is useful when Last.fm don't have tracks to stream.

Brett Boyer wrote:

No problem. Spotify is purely designed and marketed as a music streaming and
playback service. Not only can you play tracks, albums or discographies from
their vast online library, but you can also add your own local music collection
and use it as your media player. It has features such as playlist management,
the ability to queue tracks, a crossfader, etcetera, as well as the ability to
scrobble to Last.fm.

In contrast, Last.fm is, at its core, a music recommendation and statistics
service and social network for music lovers. As I wrote about in my last
message, you can't choose to play a full album or specific tracks on-demand as
you can with Spotify. Last.fm's library of streamable tracks is also much
smaller, however it's database of artists, albums, songs, genres, tags and music
events is huge and that's why it works so well. Unlike Pandora, everything is
user-contributed, so the more songs get scrobbled and the more users use the
service, to more data they have to work with.

Hope that helps.

Re: Help needed with last.fm

2012-06-09 Thread James Scholes
There seems to be some confusion here about Last.fm features and which ones can
and cannot be used with Winamp, so let me try and clear it up.

Scrobbling: Scrobbling is the act of submitting the tracks you play in Winamp or
the media player of your choice to Last.fm so that they show up on your profile.
This data is used at the very core of Last.fm, it's what makes the service
work. Submitting the songs you play on your computers or other devices is what
allows the site to recommend you new artists, albums and tracks. It also
provides you with quite a nice platform with which to track your listening
habbits.

You can scrobble with the official Last.fm Scrobbler, which last time I checked
was not accessible, or by using a plug-in for your media player of choice; there
is one for Winamp, foobar2000, etcetera, and you can also scrobble from within
Spotify if that's your thing.

Last.fm Radio: This is the portion of the Last.fm service which allows you to
stream tracks from their online library. You cannot, I repeat not, stream
individual tracks or albums on-demand as you can with Spotify. The radio
service is designed to play either a selection of music that you like, music
that Last.fm thinks you'll like, or music that your friends and people with
similar tastes to you like. Without using a piece of 3rd party software as a
proxy, you cannot play these radio stations in Winamp, however the playback
controls on the website are accessible and the music you play in the Flash
player will be scrobbled to your profile.

Hope that helps, and I'll chime in again if there's anything else people don't
understand about the service. I've been a long-time user of both Last.fm and
Spotify, so am quite well-aquainted with them.

I am getting sick and tired of people comparing these two services. At its
core, Last.fm is a recommendations engine. It takes note of what you listen to
and then suggests other artists, albums or tracks that you might enjoy. In
that respect, it is similar to Pandora. It is not at all similar to Spotify,
which is a music streaming service first and formost. Yes, you might be able
to listen to music through Last.fm, but can you listen to a band's entire
discography? Can you create a playlist of your favourite country artists or
tracks? No, because that is not what it is designed to do, a point driven home
by the fact that Last.fm streams are only in 128Kbps MP3.

Sorry if this message seems harsh, but comparing the accessibility of two
services which have completely different intended functions is rather
misleading.

DVD Audio Extractor allows you to rip a file per chapter or per title. Maybe
chapter was selected, so it created multiple smaller files?

DVD Audio Extractor. Couldn't be simpler. The people using decryption tools
and stream demuxers are making it far more difficult than it needs to be. You
can get it from: http://www.dvdae.com. Granted, it's not free, but fully worth
the price IMO, and I felt it was worth mentioning as you didn't make reference

Re: new site

2011-07-19 Thread James Scholes
There is no need to choose the Play option from a track's right-click
context menu. If the search results list is populated, simply pressing
entter once you've moved from the search field will play the first result.

Previously, Samuel Wilkins said:

Hello, Spotify is not new service. It's a music streaming service, and it
has been available in the UK for 2 years or so. It is a piece of software
that you can download and use to listen to music on. It was only recently
launched in the US, and that is because the record companies were wary of
the legal implication. The free service only allows you to liven to the same
track 5 times, and I believe only allows you to be on there a certain amount
of time per month. There are two subscription services, the only difference
between the two is that with premium you can listen to an unlimited number
of tracks and make offline playlists, whereas with limited you can only
stream tracks. I have been using it for some time and it is accessible to a
degree. If you want to search for a song, you have to go into the edit box
and type in what you want. After pressing enter, you need to shift tab and
the screen reader will not speak. You need to press the context menu key and
press down arrow to play and then enter. The song will begin playing and it
will come up in the title bar and if you use the read line command. When you
use your arrow keys, your screen reader will not be able to read the list. I
have written to them about this issue, but they sent what looked like an
automatic email response to me. I hope this helps.

Of course it's an active site. Spotify has been around for a couple of
years now, but of course, it hits the US and everybody thinks it's brand
new... LOL. For your reference, the Windows, OS X and Symbian clients
aren't that accessible, although they're usable. The version for iOS is
accessible with VoiceOver and I use it a hell of a lot when out and about.

In his original message, Gery inadvertently placed a space before the

consider typing the address yourself or checking links for errors before
claiming that websites are inactive.

Re: Finding an actual DVD with audiodescription

2011-07-18 Thread James Scholes
When I said that there were no exceptions to the rule, I was referring
to the DVD's this method of enabling audio description will work with,
rather than the DVD players which have such a feature. Although, saying
that, every single DVD player I've used has had this button, or similar,
on the remote control, even the tiny DVD player I once used when
traveling. Perhaps you're correct that television/DVD player combos
don't have such a method of easily switching audio languages on the fly.

First, I think you're all missing the Audio button on your DVD player
remote controls. This button, when pressed, will switch between audio
languages for every single DVD on the planet, so if the DVD has audio
description, that's how you can find it without using the menus.
There are no exceptions to this rule.

Secondly, as the audio description for the Harry Potter DVD's is
produced by a UK company (ITFC), it stands to reason that yes, you
can only purchase described copies in the United Kingdom. For a list

description would be fairly easy. I mean, they have closed captions

talking vcrs but no talking dvd players? Or some sort of talking

Ok I'm done now. But come on, it's like the talking book library

don't know who else to ask. Several months ago I bought a Harry

(apparently wrong) understanding that all those films would have
audiodescription. Either we can't find it on the DVD or it's just not
there. I live in the U.S. and was using Amazonddcom to buy it. When I
googled Deathly Hallows Part 1 audiodescription, the first thing that
came up was from amazonddco. Does this mean you can only get the
audiodescribed version from the UK? I do have a lovely,Mp-3 copy of
this film but do want the physical DVD so that I can watch it with a
group of blind and sighted friends. So where in the world can I find
such an animal?

Thanks as always for your wonderful help.

Re: converting a file

2011-06-06 Thread James Scholes
I'm not sure what codecs/codec versions Mediacoder actually uses (not
sure if they publish the information on their website), but the Audacity
developers make no secret of the codecs/versions that are used by their
software. Plus I trust the integrity of FFmpeg to decode files
properly. I'm not a fan of Switch for the same reasons; you have no
control over the encoder used, settings, etc. For batch conversion, I
actually use dBpoweramp Converter, which has a whole host of codecs
available for it, but to my knowledge, video files are not supported so
Audacity comes in useful.

Previously, Alexandra Grünauer said:

It just seems more complicated to install those plugins and to handle
them, if you, say, just wanted one file converted.

Re: Help with mp3tag

2011-06-04 Thread James Scholes

Hi Don,

To achieve the results you require, follow these steps:

1. Open MP3Tag.
2. Open the File > Export... dialog (control-E).
3. Tab to the New button and activate it.
4. Type a name for your new export configuration and click OK.
5. The new configuration file should open in your default text editor.
Select all of the contents and delete them.

6. Copy the two lines below and paste them into the file:
$filename(txt,utf-8)$loop(%_path%)$num(%track%,2), %title%, %artisst%,
%composer%

$loopend()
8. As you can see, the fields will be comma-delimited with one track per
line when you export your track list. Make any required changes to the
layout of the file or the list of fields and save and close it.
9. In the Export dialog, set the filename and click the OK button to
export using your new configuration (it should be automatically focused
in the list of available configurations).

Hope that helps.

Previously, Donald L. Roberts said:
I downloaded a program called Mp3tag which I wanted to use to Export
the I D 3 tags on some mp3 files to a text file. It exports to .csv
files which are essentially text files, so this is not a problem.

However, there are facilities in this program which permit the user to
determine which tag fields are exported and the specific order in
which they appear. I can't figure out just how to configure these
options. All I wish to export are the track number, the track title,
the artist, and the composer, in that order.

I therefore would like to make contact with anyone familiar with the
Mp3tag program to give me some pointers. Also, if someone has a
suggestion for a different program which can accomplish the same thing
which will work on either Windows 7 64-bit or XP, , please let me know.

Thanks in advance for feedback.

Don Roberts

Re: Transfering Foobar 2000 shortcuts?

2011-06-01 Thread James Scholes
Are you running an installed copy of Foobar2000? If so, just copy your
%AppData%\foobar2000 folder to the other machine on which you have
installed the player and all your settings (including keyboard shortcut
assignments) will be copied across. Note: Before you do this, make sure
that both machines are running the same version of Foobar2000 to avoid
conflicts.

Re: iPhone Question

2011-05-12 Thread James Scholes
The third icon in the status bar shows network connection status. If
you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, it will read "x of 3 bars, Wi-Fi
signal strength." If not, it will show what type of connection you have
to the cellular data network (3G, GPRS, Edge).

By default, the iPhone is configured to connect to preferred networks
(those which you have connected to before) automatically when they are
within range.

worthwhile alone as it is a cinch to script for such things as
reading the

Nearly every thing Foobar can do you can create a shortcut key to it and
make them global if you want to. In the foobar version I looked at ages

changed
and is fully accessible. There is so much more to this program than I

which

was something that Winamp wasn't at times. The only thing I wish Foobar
had is a plug-in to provide time marking features. Perhaps that can be
scripted in time or I might find that plug-in in the future.

But yeah, I don't know what gives with Foobar and Window Eyes though.
There

is a problem reading the list of tracks in the play list. NVDA and Jaws
don't have this problem.

Re: FYI foobar and winamp blog

2011-04-20 Thread James Scholes

Hi Barry,

First, I'll start with the ones that are definite yes's:

3. The ability to tell the player to stop playing at the end of the
current track or a selected track further along in the playlist.

4. The ability to play the last ten seconds or so of a track without
needing to specify the time. (plug-in needed -
http://skipyrich.com/wiki/Foobar2000:Preview)

5. The ability to jump to a specified time in a track. (plug-in needed
- http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_seek_box)

6. The ability to move forward and back by 5 second increments in a
track by the use of arrow keys or similar.

7. The ability to read the sample rate, bit rate and number of tracks of
a file.

8. The ability to modify ID3 tags.

9. The ability to cross fade tracks (I know this can be done with Foobar).

10. The ability to equalise the output volume of files.

Now, for the ones which I'm not too sure about:

1. The ability to search for a file in a playlist and move it to
immediately after the currently playing track. (there is a playlist
search function that works well, however I'm not sure how easy it is to
queue search results after the currently playing track)

2. The ability to locate a file with Windows Explorer and insert it into
the playlist immediately after the currently playing track. This can be
done with Winamp although how to do it is not immediately obvious.
(queuing songs from Windows Explorer is definitely possible, however
once again I'm not sure about having songs queued in a certain order.
Perhaps you could try the same method you use with Winamp with Foobar if
it is a universal Windows Explorer trick?)

Previously, Barry Chapman said:

I have been a long time Winamp user, but have been reading the recent
discussion on Foobar2000 with interest. I would consider
changing to Foobar if it can do all of the following, which are possible with
Winamp. The inability to do them would be a show
stopper for me.

1. The ability to search for a file in a playlist and move it to immediately
after the currently playing track.

2. The ability to locate a file with Windows Explorer and insert it into the
playlist immediately after the currently playing track.
This can be done with Winamp although how to do it is not immediately obvious.

3. The ability to tell the player to stop playing at the end of the current

8. The ability to modify ID3 tags.

9. The ability to cross fade tracks (I know this can be done with Foobar).

10. The ability to equalise the output volume of files.

That will do for starters. Can anyone say if it is possible to do the above
with Foobar.

Thanks,
Barry Chapman

Hi with all the discussion around Foobar and Winamp. Here is an interesting
blog about it.

I'm not trying to continue a pointless argument just sending some information

I am planning to do a podcast later this month about foobar as well.

Re: Reaper Multi Track recording software

2011-04-19 Thread James Scholes

I just clicked the link here and it works fine, but if you go to

http://www.cucat.org/class_notes/Thursday%20chats/2011/

the Reaper tutorial/introduction is the last one on that page and is
called "20110408 Intro To Reaper.mp3".

In regards to your query about documentation, a lot of the Reaper manual
is useless for blind beginners as ReaAccess (the plug-in I mentioned
earlier) changes many of the hotkeys and when using a screen reader many
of the procedures to accomplish the basics are slightly different. That
audio file should hopefully get you up and running, however if it does
not, the ReaAccess website (http://www.reaaccess.com) features details
on how you can join a mailing list specifically to talk about the use of
Reaper with screen readers. I'm sure people will be happy to help you
on there.

Previously, Mac Norins said:

That link did not work either, which leads me to believe that something may
be wrong with the settings, in my I.E.! Can I find this anywhere else?
Also, does the Reaper site have tutorial information? I am running an old
XP Home computer that is slowly dying, so that may be my problem; getting a
Windows 7 shortly!

Thanks,

Re: How to find an audiodescribed version of a dvd using a PC?

2011-04-18 Thread James Scholes
How you find and select the audio description track fully depends on the
software you're using and how you want to watch it. For instance, if
you wish to rip the AD track into a standard audio format and store it
on your computer, you might use DVD Audio Extractor, in which case you
would choose "English for Visually Impaired" as the language before
ripping. If you just want to watch the film straight from the DVD
itself on a computer, you'll need software to play it. Windows Media
Player and PowerDVD spring to mind, however the number of software
applications available to play DVD's is so vast that you would need to
choose one that you liked, and then someone could help with language
selection to enable audio description. Chances are that this process
would be accessible, but as I say there are too many different
applications to give clear instructions on just one.

If you want to watch the film with AD on your DVD player, some people
will tell you to select the appropriate option in the DVD's inaccessible
menu system. However, all you have to do is simply start playing the
film (usually the very top option on a dVD's menu) and press the "audio"
or "audio language" button on your DVD player's remote control until you
hear audio description.

Okay, as usual when I come crying to you guys for help, I'm at myy rope's
end. Just recently bought the 3-disk dvd set of Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hallows Part 1. As I understand it, Warner Brothers is supposed to
release the HP dvd's with audio description, perhaps on thei Blue Ray
version which I believe is one of these disks. I would love to find that
particular version using my PC if at all possible. I'm using Windows 7
64-bit, for what it's worth. I'm running Jaws 12.

If anyone can help me out, I'd be most grateful. If I can't play these
dvd's on a PC but can on a dvd player, feel free to write me off-list if you
can' give me some tips.

Thanks lots.

Re: Downloading mp3 files, changing to wave files for a standardaudio cd.

2011-04-11 Thread James Scholes
Brett is correct. Audio CD's do not store WAV files. When you burn
audio files, whether MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG or any other format to an audio
CD, they are written to the CD, and CDA files are also written as place
holders so that CD players, computers and other devices know where to
find the tracks. That's why you must go through the process of ripping
a CD to store the tracks in audio files; it's not enough to simply copy
the CDA files onto your hard drive.  This analogy also works in reverse;
writing a bunch of WAV files to a CD doesn't make it an audio CD, nor
does it make it playable on standard CD players.

Thus, my original point still stands - converting MP3 to WAV is
absolutely pointless.

Previously, Brett Boyer said:
cd players do not play wave files so putting wave files on a cd will
get you nowhere. You must burn them as an audio cd which would result
in file names ending in CDA.
You can't copy files to a cd and then expect them to play on a
standard cd player.

Just a note - ExpressBurn and CDex will burn MP3 files to standard
audio CDs just fine. Converting MP3 files to WAV is known as
transcoding, a process where you convert a lower quality audio file
format to a higher quality one. An MP3 file is compressed, and
cannot be decompressed. So while WAV files that were
recorded/ripped as WAV will sound better than their MP3
counterparts, a WAV file converted from an MP3 file will sound
exactly the same as the MP3 file but have a larger file size. To
sum up, converting MP3 to WAV is completely pointless.

Previously, Vinny Samarco said:

Hi,
I am wondering why I am not being successful in this venture.
I have some mp3 files that I am asked to put on audio cd in
standard format.
I take the mp3 files, download them, then I use goldwave to save
them as wave files to play on a standard cd player, I also split
the file into tracks.
When I go to burn these onto standard audio cds they won't play,
and I can't figure out why not. I have made sure that the files
were wave files at 44100, 16 byt. and yet the results will play on
some mp3 players, but not standard audio cds.

I have also tried this using cdex, but with the same result. I am
using express burn to burn my wave files. Can anyone think of what
I am doing wrong?

Thanks.

Re: Downloading mp3 files, changing to wave files for a standard audio cd.

2011-04-11 Thread James Scholes
Just a note - ExpressBurn and CDex will burn MP3 files to standard audio
CDs just fine. Converting MP3 files to WAV is known as transcoding, a
process where you convert a lower quality audio file format to a higher
quality one. An MP3 file is compressed, and cannot be decompressed. So
while WAV files that were recorded/ripped as WAV will sound better than
their MP3 counterparts, a WAV file converted from an MP3 file will sound
exactly the same as the MP3 file but have a larger file size. To sum
up, converting MP3 to WAV is completely pointless.

Previously, Vinny Samarco said:

Hi,
I am wondering why I am not being successful in this venture.
I have some mp3 files that I am asked to put on audio cd in standard
format.
I take the mp3 files, download them, then I use goldwave to save them
as wave files to play on a standard cd player, I also split the file
into tracks.
When I go to burn these onto standard audio cds they won't play, and I
can't figure out why not. I have made sure that the files were wave
files at 44100, 16 byt. and yet the results will play on some mp3
players, but not standard audio cds.

I have also tried this using cdex, but with the same result. I am
using express burn to burn my wave files. Can anyone think of what I
am doing wrong?

Thanks.
Vinny

Re: To all of you Total Recorder aficionados out there, a puzzle for you

2011-01-08 Thread James Scholes
You don't have to accomplish this through Total Recorder. Just open
Windows Volume Control, and assuming you're running Windows XP, check
the box to mute the Line In. By default Volume Control shows playback
controls, so muting the Line In will only stop it being played back. In
other words, it won't affect your recording at all, and you can get on
with using your computer as you normally would.

Previously, Larry Higgins said:
Well, I guess I should really say that puzzle is mine. Hopefully
somebody can help me restore harmony between me and TR.

Just a little bit of background. I had a nearly fatal accident with my
computer at the end of March of the previous year. No need to go in
to all that, except to say that it became necessary to rebuild my
computer from the ground up, software wise. Yesterday, after all that
time, I needed to schedule and record a radio program from my stereo
receiver, using the linein to my soundcard. That part went fine, but
the problem is what follows.

The problem is simply this. I can no longer get TR to mute the sound
coming into the linein when recording. This used to allow me to record
from my receiver, allowing me to do any other work without
interference from what I am recording from the external source. I have
scoured every dialog box for any remedy, and just can't find one. I
remember there being a monitoring option that one could check or
uncheck in a previous version, and when unchecking that box, that, at
least as far as I can remember, allowed me to record linein in the
background, but now I can't seem to find anything remotely relating to
monitoring, unless it is preview monitoring, and that doesn't seem to
help.

Please, please, don't get this issue confused with hearing speech
through my soundcard going to my linein recording. I have that
covered, no problemo.

If I can further clarify the issue, please let me know. I guess I can
always find something to do other than use my computer during these
times, but would like to once again have the option of computing in
silence.

Thanks much,

Larry

The creator of Hope is charging $10, which I don't begrudge if his program

Most people seem these days to use Sonar along with the JFW scripts for

Audacity is multi-track and free and there are likely scripts for it.

If you consider the Mac, then Amadeous is said to be accessible.

Re: accessible mixers

2010-10-12 Thread James Scholes
I found the Fasttrack Ultra interface very susceptible to USB bus
noise. That maybe just my experience; I was running it on a laptop not
really designed with audio gear in mind, and I do use an M-Audio PCI
card in my desktop machine and it works brilliently, so there's no doubt
that M-Audio make good gear. If you're working on a desktop, I'd
recommend PCI every time.

Previously, Steve Matzura said:

Behringer makes some very nice hq but reasonably priced mixers with lo

you want something heavy-duty that'll last you well into the next
century, unless they change the electrical specs or something, then go
for a Mackie. The Onyx series are very nice and sturdy--the only
non-metal parts on 'em are the knob caps and the rubber-clad side
rails. But be prepared to pay double what you'll pay for a Behringer.

Regarding the interface, spending a hundred, hundred-and-fifty,
dollars for a Fast Track Pro or anything similar is not such a bad
thing. It doesn't have a lot of I/O, but if you'll be using a mixer
on the front end and a direct audio feed to your PC or an analog feed
to some theater gear on the back end, you could do lots worse.

Cables Needed for new Audio Setup

2010-10-02 Thread James Scholes

 Hi everyone.

I'm new to the world of audio recording, production, studio equipment,
etc. Its the hardware side of things, or specifically cabling, that's
confusing me today.

I don't have a super advanced or professional set up, as this my first
go at anything pro-audio-related.

I have recently purchased a Yamaha MG166C 16 channel mixer, and an
M-Audio Delta 44 PCI audio interface. I also have a more basic, generic
USB audio interface that I will be using for media playback. I only need
1 microphone input at the moment, and 2 line inputs from external
devices. I am slightly confused as to what cables I will need to set all
this up, so have detailed what I want to accomplish below. I'm having a
hard time understanding the difference between TRS and TS connectors, as
well as balanced and unbalanced signals. So thanks in advance for any
help anyone can offer.

What I want to accomplish:
- Dynamic microphone on channel 1 (already set up with correct cable)
- Audio from an external device patched into mono channels 3 and 4:
for this, I assume I need either a stereo 6.3mm to dual mono 6.3mm TRS
cable, or the same but with a 3.5mm stereo plug for more consumer-grade
devices. However, does the cable need to be balanced, or unbalanced? It
will only be running to devices extremely short distances away.

- Audio from a digital AV receiver on mono channels 5 and 6:
The AV receiver has RCA phono outputs, so for this I guess I need a dual
phono to dual mono 6.3mm TRS cable? Again, should this cable be balanced
or unbalanced?

- Output from a basic audio interface on stereo channel 11/12:
The interface again has RCA outputs, so I think I need a dual phono to
stereo 6.3mm TRS cable?

- Outputs of the Delta 44 coming in on stereo channels 13/14 and 15/16:
For this, am I right in thinking I need a dual mono TRS 6.3mm to Stereo
TRS 6.3mm cable?
- Outputs of the 1/2 group and 3/4 group buses on the mixer to the
inputs on the Delta 44:
I'm guessing here that I need a dual mono TRS 6.3mm to dual mono TRS
6.3mm cable? I could not find any of these at DolphinMusic or
DigitalVillage, so would 2x mono TRS 6.3mm to mono TRS 6.3mm cables work?

- Finally, the output of the stereo L/R bus to the basic audio interface:
The interface has RCA inputs, so do I need a dual mono 6.3mm TRS to dual
phono cable (the same type of cable that I think I need for the AV
receiver)?

Again, thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any help with this;
none of the cables will be running over long distances (3m at the most).

Basic Soundcard

2010-09-29 Thread James Scholes

 Hello,

Can anyone suggest a cheap soundcard, either USB or PCI (not Firewire),
that would be suitable for playback of basic system sounds (my screen
reader, system notification sounds, output of programs like Skype, etc)?

I've just taken delivery of a new Yamaha mixer and Delta 44 audio
interface, and for obvious reasons, don't want to use the Delta for
misc. system audio. My on-board card doesn't sound particularly
pleasing, and the other USB interface I have here isn't that great either.

Re: Inaccessible Blio eReader Released

I take your point, however the software is not totally inaccessible.
While it is true you can't read books, or set the preferences, you seem
to think the app is totally unusable. At least you can browse their
bookstore and get a feel for what content they have.

Re: The Zoom H1 audio recorder

2010-09-19 Thread James Scholes
The PCM-D50 is fitted with 4 GB of internal flash memory and a Memory
Stick Pro-HG Duo^(TM) slot.

To be fair, if you thought the noise floor was too high on the H1, then
either you have a very special purpose for it, like recording speech in
super quiet environments, or you've wasted your money because you don't
understand that 99% of sounds you capture are loud enough to mask the
sound. And if they're not, use an expander/gate on your recording
afterwards. The H1 is not designed for the same applications that the
PCMD50 is, but that's not to say it can't do a damn good job. And as
you said, for $99, not only can you honestly not get anything better,
but you'd be a fool to suggest that a $99 piece of kit with no menus is
up to the same standards of a menu-driven, $600 recorder like the PCMD50.

With the Sony recorder, or any other recorder with menus but no speech,
you have a hell of a lot more to remember than sample and bit rate. For
a start, you need to remember where those settings are in the menu
system, never mind how to set them once you get there. So I don't see
it as a floor of the recorder, as only the DM4, DM520 etc from Olympus
overcome memory problems by providing speech feedback.

Previously, Dane Trethowan said:

Yeah but correct me please about a few issues that the Sony machine has, for
example can it only use memory stick? If so then I'm not particularly
interested in that.

As the review states on the H1, the noise factor of the Zoom H1 is only noticable in
very quiet environments and you can hear this in the review itself so given all that?
Well I reckon $99.0 U.S. is an absolute bargain. Admitedly you'll need a reasonable
memory to remember what the format and sampling rate is set to but most people I know
have good memories.

Vocal Microphone and Soundcard Recommendations

2010-08-13 Thread James Scholes

 Hi all,

I plan to purchase a Yamaha MG166C mixer, and a M-Audio Delta 44
soundcard. For obvious reasons, I don't want speech from my screen
reader, and system sounds, to go through my production card (the
Delta). My on-board soundcard places too much emphasis on low-end
frequencies, and playing anything through its outputs sounds less than
desirable. What soundcards are people using for system sounds, speech,
etc? My experience has been that speech, especially Eloquence, does not
sound great through pro audio cards.

Secondly, what microphones would people recommend for simple vocal
applications (podcasting, recording, internet broadcasting, etc)? I'll
be using this microphone with the Yamaha mixer I mentioned above, and
I'm currently using a cheap Behringer dynamic (the XM8500).

RE: It's Still Stealing

2010-04-19 Thread James Homuth
That's not a difference at all. BARD is still saying you can read this book,
but only in the way we say, at the locations we say, and in the methods we
say. If you want to draw comparisons between BARD and a public library, you
don't own those books either. Yet, you still have more freedom to listen
to/read those books wherever, however, and whenever you want. The only
difference is BARD isn't forcing you to delete those books after a week,
whereas the library escentially is.

If it's stealing, then please explain...

2010-04-19 Thread James Homuth
... Why it is sales and other revenue in every industry supposedly effected
by this so-called theft continue to increase. Year over year, DVD sales,
music sales, and movie rentals have undergone a significant increase, so
says just about every independant study not in the pocket of the RIAA and
MPAA. Which, escentially, is just about everyone who isn't the RIAA and
MPAA. Even online methods that are considered legal (Netflicks, etc) have
seen increases to their rental and streaming revenue, in spite of the fact
places like Blockbuster are establishing agreements with studios to arange
it so that Netflicks doesn't see new releases from those studios until 28
days after Blockbuster receives those same new releases. Also, while you're
at it, kindly explain why it is sales of books in just about every format
continue to increase, in spite of the fact industry lobbiests continue to
insist they're all taking a drastic nose dive the likes of which haven't
been seen since the Titanic sank.

Additionally, explain this to me. If getting your hands on a copy of a book,
CD or movie you haven't paid for is so illegal/immoral/otherwise a sin on
the same level as breaking into a store and taking something, why is the
exchanging/giving away/otherwise distributing of actual, hard copy books
still so popular? It's far from uncommon for avid book readers to read
something, then pass it on to someone else to read, who will then pass it on
to someone else while at the same time passing something they'd just
finished reading back the other way. That's not considered illegal, and has
been going on arguably since the invention of books. But yet, the same copy
of that book is being passed from one hand to another. It hasn't been paid
for by these other people. It hasn't resulted in any compensation whatsoever
to the author from these other people for the privelege of reading that
book. And no one's thrown a fit over billions upon billions of lost sales
dollars because each and every one of those people who dared crack that book
didn't pony up the money for their own copy before doing so. Why is that so
different from the digital era, in spite of the fact the only real change is
now if someone else wants to read that book, the original buyer doesn't have
to give up their copy? I'd really appreciate hearing the explanation for
that from some of these folks who seem to be under the impression we've all
joined the rip off the author/musician/actor bandwagon here. Anyone?

RE: It's Still Stealing

2010-04-19 Thread James Homuth
Audiobook sales are pretty much exactly like album sales. The publishers see
most of the revenue from it, whereas the authors get stuck with very little.
And, indeed, there are quite a few authors now who are releasing their books
online first, knowing they'll be downloaded, given away, whatever, and
knowing that'll transfer over into more direct interactions with readers.
That, in turn, will generate more revenue that goes directly to the author.
Why do you think publishers are now getting all uppity because people are
being drawn more to ebooks? They don't get as much of a kickback from
it--the author gets more of the money then. That's why you see, if you
actually bother to read about it, publishers pulling their selections from
Amazon and companies like that. If a book is good enough, people will pay
for it anyway, whether they've purchased it or not. Because, and rightly so,
authors do deserve to be compensated for the work. But they're more likely
to pay for it in methods that go directly to the author if that's the case,
and bypass the publishers entirely.

Also, though I suspect pointing it out will serve only to be ignored,
there's a ton and a half of evidence that says piracy doesn't have nearly
the effect on sales of any variety as the industry would like to have you
believe. In fact, sales in certain industries are actually inicreasing, be
there piracy or no piracy. But best not tell that to the lobbiests just in
case they brand you a pirate by association.

No, but the library won't let you make copies of that book and give them
away or sell them to others. The copy protection scheme with BARD books is
intended to keep these books from getting into the general public and
impacting the sales of audio books. This kind of protection is necessary in
order to ensure cooperation with the publishers. I think the attitude of
some on this list that once they have an MP3 in their possession they're
able to do with it whatever they want demonstrates why the NLS and other
companies and agencies need to take such action.

Although I'm sure the vendor manufacturing the players is doing it for a
profit, I'm not sure how you know they're making tons of money (whatever
that means). I also have no ideas what insentives you're talking about.
If you're implying that kickbacks are involved then that's illegal and you
should report that. I also don't see how the 3rd party players are raking in
the dough from this, unless by providing this feature they're boosting their
sales. I don't see anything wrong with that by the way.

I was waiting for someone to make that argument. If the public library
system uses that, and I haven't found evidence yet that says most of them
do, that's very nearly as ridiculous as the system BARD uses. That's
escentially saying to consumers, "We don't trust you as far as we can throw
you, but rather than restrict how and when you can play the books, we'd
rather destroy them and replace them than take the chance someone might
actually want to take longer than x days to listen to them. Something tells
me that would do more damage to the library than any potential piracy might.
But, leave it to the government to pick the option most likely to be laughed
off. Never mind cracked in a week.

The RIAA is in quite a bit of hot water right now because of its legal
tactics over the last few years. Namely, sue first, intimidate second, ask
questions later. They sued a 60-year-old woman who didn't even know how to
download music because they claimed someone from her house was downloading
music illegally. She was the only one who lived there, and didn't have any
kind of network or anything for anyone not living there to gain access to.
But, that didn't stop them from suing her, trying to force her to settle,
and successfully bilking her out of multiple thousand dollars. That's just
one example. Throw "RIAA lawsuit" into google or some other search engine
and you can probably find plenty of others. So no, I wouldn't be overly
concerned if someone from the RIAA showed up at my door, because at best
their track record has been questionable. And if just one of the things I
supposedly downloaded proves to be inaccurate, they effectively have no
case. Every day now I hear of another court case that gets tossed out
because the RIAA basicly had no leg to stand on but was kind of hoping their
victims would crack before that could be established. And yet, every day,
the RIAA keeps going on and on about how it's got an extremely high success
rate at restoring the billions upon billions of dollars stolen out of the
pockets of musicians by the wicked evil music downloaders. Because, you
know, they're just looking out for the artists after all. Nothing to do with
the fact they get pretty much all the money generated by CD sales anyway.

The websites that allow you to download music and other copyrighted material
are illegal in the United States. Many of these sites are not in the United
States and there have been situations where The the United States have put
blocks on these out of country websites. The RIAA is going after people all
the time and arresting them and fining them for all the material they
downloaded illegally. If you do a lot of illegal downloading you could well
find someone from the RIAA at your door someday.

If you pay for a CD or an MP3 song you can make as many copies of it you
wish as long as you and only you use it for yourself. If you give a copy of
that CD or MP3 song to someone else then it becomes illegal.

Books from the NLS is a completely different situation. The copyright
holder of the books gives the NLS permission to reproduce their books in a
special format. That's why the NLS books that are on cassette are recorded
in order, track one, track three, track two and track four. The idea was
that when recorded in this format the books could not be played on a
standard cassette recorder. The NLS cassettes are also recorded at half
normal cassette speed. This is also the reason digital books from the NLS
are in a special format. The NLS had to insure the copyright holders of
books that they would be used only by blind people and other handicapped
people who could not read a normal print book.

RE: It's Still Stealing

2010-04-18 Thread James Homuth
Kevin, the point is this. Why should you, after obtaining the NLS books,
have to go and get one of the NLS approved players just to enjoy the
privelege of being able to listen to the book while not at the computer?
That would be like Soni putting out an album with copy protection that
limitted what you could play it on to CD players manufactured by Soni. Soni
already tried the whole copy protection to prevent people from putting the
contents of CD's on their computers, or copying them to other CD's. A pretty
high-profile lawsuit later, they don't do that anymore. Apple tried to say
you could only put music you purchased from iTunes on your iPod. You
couldn't burn that to CD, or play it in anything else that wasn't either
your iPod or iTunes. Specificly, the version of iTunes on the computer to
which it was downloaded. Without getting into the nitty gritty details,
let's just say they don't do that anymore either. The same applies to NLS.
The only reason it hasn't changed yet is because there's no reason for them
to, according to them. Hence, people will continue to break the copy
protection anyway.

Hi John and list.

I'm going to comment on several messages that I've seen on this topic.

First, John, I wonder if your direct boss is the owner of the station. If
he is, the station may get into trouble if publishers find out he is
allowing material sent to the station is being copied. This material is
specificly for the use of the station. In fact, I'm not sure if the owner
of the CD actually owns the music. With software, you are licensed to use
the software. You don't own the copy you use, you just have a license for
it. I'm not blaming you for copying the CD's. Just be aware that the
station could be in legal trouble if investigated.

As for using VCR's or tape recorders, this has been a debate that the
publishers of material have had with people for years. I don't know the
legal wording, but I believe that courts have ruled that so long as you use
the material you obtain from over the air, you have the right to use it for
your own private use. This also holds for albums you buy. If you decide to
make a compilation CD for a friend, technicly you're breaking the law. I'm
guilty of doing this myself. I'm not getting anything for what I do either,
but that doesn't make what I do legal.

As for recording material over a computer, there has been a product cease
production precisely because of this, and it made many blind people mad. XM
had a great device called a PCR. You'd hook the antenna to it, run a cable
from it to either the line in jack of your sound card or stereo, and hook it
up to your computer with a USB cable. The software that came with it
displayed the channel you were on, as well as the title and artist of the
song being played. Unfortunately, someone figured out how to convert the
audio into labeled mp3 files. I say unfortunately, because the RIAA learned
about this and threated to sue XM. The product no longer was made. I did
get lucky and purchased one of these. It's not the most accessible piece of
equipment with a screen reader, but you can view the title of the song that
is being played, as well as easily switch channels by entering their number.

Now for my comments on BARD, which I'll call NLS. First, it's not true that
you have to buy a player to listen to NLS books. Your local library can
provide you with a free player to play this content. It not only plays NLS
content, but mp3 files, as well as some other standard audio file formats.
It's true that you can't play things like books from Audible, but you can't
beat the price of either the player or the books you can download. It's
true that the books are in a protected form, but I personally don't have a
problem with this.

Finally, we could have limitless arguments on what publishers should get for
their work, how they protect it, and ways to circumvent these protection
schemes. In short, if someone copy protects something, someone will find a
way to crack it. As for NLS, I think it's sad that it's limited to U.S.
citizens, but I understand why.

Have a good day, and don't work too hard.

RE: It's Still Stealing

2010-04-18 Thread James Homuth
I've said it before, but it deserves to be said again. Just because it's
illegal does not, under any circumstances, mean it's wrong. It just means
that the RIAA and MPAA have been successful in lobbying governments to give
them more money. In actuality, if you want to stick with the list of things
that aren't likely to be challenged in court, it is still illegal for you to
tape something off the radio, or off your TV. Television programs,
particularly live broadcasts, make it a point of pointing that out on at
least one occasion during the broadcast. Do people still do it? Of course.
Will it be challenged? Probably not. Would the MPAA throw every single
person who's done it in jail if they thought they had a remote chance of
getting away with it? In a heartbeat. Same with the RIAA. Why do you think
you're not allowed to bring a video camera into a movie theater? It may only
be for personal use, but it's still illegal. And in that case, people have
actually been arrested for piracy as a result of it.

Heck, Warner Brothers just got finnished suing a talk show because the
30-second clips of music that show played were supposedly not paid for, and
the show was effectively branded an advocate of piracy in court. Now, I'm
not sure if the suit actually got anywhere, but the point is, it's a
30-second music clip. 30 whole seconds. And the RIAA was up in arms because
it wasn't paid for. Keeping in mind that, even had it been paid for, the
artists responsible for those clips probably wouldn't see nearly half of the
payment anyway.

In another instance, a band posted a video of one of its songs on Youtube,
hoping that people would take that video, post it on other websites, get
more people to watch it, which would translate to more money for them in the
long run. The band was Okay Go. Once the RIAA caught wind of it, they forced
Youtube to shut down the video. When the video was finally brought back, the
ability to post it on any website that wasn't Youtube was removed, and it
came with advertisements that delivered a kickback to the RIAA. Shortly
thereafter, the band pretty much informed the RIAA where they could put
their advertisements.

There are a ton and a half more situations like this, where it's not about
what's legal but rather about more money for the RIAA and the MPAA. Most of
today's musicians probably don't care how their music gets listened to, so
long as it translates into more money for them. And, since they make most of
their money from performances and other items that aren't necessarily CD's,
they're not losing very significant funds if someone decides not to pay the
$20 for an album when they only like one song from it. Especially if they're
more likely to pay $50 for a concert ticket, most if not all of which goes
right into the band's pocket rather than the record lable anyway.

A few points.

Copying someone else's CD's is illegal.

If someone gives you a CD then that is not illegal.

It's my understanding that sometimes special CD's can be distributed to
broadcasters with the agreement that they not be redistributed. I obviously
have no idea if that's what's going on in this case.

Copying something you purchased or owned for your own personal use is not
illegal, although there's some grey area here, it's generally assumed that
no one will challenge the fair use laws.

Making analog copies of material broadcast on TV or radio has always been
permitted, but again, this is for your own personal use and not to be
redistributed. Obviously, this has become more problematic for publishers
with digital broadcasts and copies, although it still seems to be allowed
for personal use. Obviously, you're clearly crossing the line by
redistributing this material.

BARD is under the misguided impression that, even after you download your
copy of a particular book, BARD still owns that copy. You have no legal
authority to do anything, considered legal or otherwise, with that copy. Not
only is that incorrect, but it's also even more restrictive than even the
most literally interpreted copyright law. Again, I'll use my example of
iTunes. You pay for a couple songs from iTunjes. They're now yours. Apple no

business models like that that convince people to do things you would call

RE: It's Still Stealing

2010-04-18 Thread James Homuth
You touched on the problem right there. Every single thing you download from
BARD is copy protected. Meaning, if you can't aford to purchase one of their
select authorized players, or if you can't get the government to pay for one
for you, yet you still want to actually be able to use what you legally have
access to, you can't. Unless you break their copy protection, which the BARD
loyalists will officially and immediately declare piracy. That isn't piracy,
however. You have access to the material. You were allowed, by BARD, to
download the material. You are authorized, by BARD, to keep, and listen to,
everything you download from them indefinitely. The only thing BARD doesn't
authorize you to do is listen to it while you're out somewhere without first
going broke. *That* is what promotes piracy. If I have the choice to
download something from BARD, fork over a couple hundred dollars for one of
their authorized players, and then listen to the book while I'm on my way to
work, or download a torrent of the same book, and copy it to the MP3 player
I already have, which option do you think I'm going to go for? Same thing
with people who find ways to break BARD's copy protection. They want the
material, but either don't want to or can't aford to buy one of BARD's
blessed players. They still want the material, and they still want to be
able to listen to it while on their way to work. They already have a
portable player, but by BARD's logic, you absolutely must buy a second
portable player, just for BARD, or you'll be declared a pirate. Sorry, no. I
already bought one. And it cost a whole lot less than the VR Stream.

Your rite, but after you download the file you don't return it. The books
you download are coppy protected, so how are you not steeling it then. Your
not so if you have permition to cop that file the if you have the permition
of someone else to do the sam thing then you aren't steeling that either.

But with Bard, you're not permitted to share and you have to qualify for
their service by being blind and having a player that they authroize. There

is a specific exception in the copyright law for Bard and Bookshare type
services.

Sure, if you believe BARD. Unfortunately, they're borrowing talking points
from the recording industry. And those talking points have been debunked 6
ways from Sunday.

Actually, the consequences of wide spread piracy from outlets like Bard will
be the elimination of the service.

RE: It's Still Stealing

2010-04-18 Thread James Homuth
Apple tried to do the exact same thing with their iTunes. They tried
limitting exactly what type of player you could put their music etc on in
the same way BARD is. The reasons that didn't work are the exact same
reasons BARD shouldn't be doing that either. If you get your hands on
something, whether you have legal access to do so or not, you're going to
want to do whatever you want with that something. Either put it on a CD, or
copy it to something smaller than your Victor Reader, or any number of
things. And if someone wants to burn that book to a CD, or do something else
with it that BARD has decided they're not allowed to, even though they have
legal access to it, people are just going to find less legal means to do so.
Rather than prop up and defend an out of date business model, people should
be pushing companies like BARD to get caught up with the rest of the world
and actually give people a choice as to what to do with their acquisitions.

RE: It's Still Stealing

2010-04-18 Thread James Homuth
It's not theft if the person it's being copied from doesn't actually lose
anything. Did you copy a tape growing up? Same thing. All you're doing is
just copying another file. That it happens to be a digital file is
irrelevant.

It's still stealing whether or not your boss gives you permission to copy

Isolading and/or removing instrumentation and/or vocals from tracks in Goldwave?

2010-03-18 Thread James Homuth
Hello all,

I'm interested in knowing if there's an easy way to either isolate or remove
particular instruments, or vocals, from a musical track in Goldwave. Failing
that, if there's another program I can look into that'll handle that for me.
I've done some searching, but I haven't seen yet any kind of simplistic or
non-headache-inducing way of doing so. If anyone has the answer, I'd
appreciate knowing. Thanks in advance.

James
