Time Markers in Winamp was Re: ripping CD's with windows media player
Just to clarify something, Winamp definitely doesn't have time Markers, try using Winamp with Window-eyes and all of your time markers will instantly disappear (smile). People need to remember that time markers are a feature of the JAWS scripts for Winamp and not a feature of Winamp itself. where is this? *clapps hands...appoligizes...I didn't know there was an option to do that. And now my real player is acting mental. When I go to burn a cd, it won't show me the list of currently added songs. What's going on hear? Tyler PS: that's just to begin with, there are a lot of other things going wrong now. When I exit real player, and go back into it, it won't tell me where I am when I tab around. I know I'm in the real player window, but jaws is announcing nothing when I'm in real player. I don't have a problem, the problem is I'd rather be able to choose the exact bitrate (not just quolity: 0 percent). I used the jaws cursor and got nothing, at least from what I could understand. Mine does 52- but I'm guessing you got yours a while back. I got mine in 04, and a lot of new burners burn at 52 x (that is if they are stand-alone, not with dvd burner as well). Winamp gets my vote simply because for some things it beats WMP. I don't want to argue or anything, but winamp has time markers, good for the avid reader. It also is easier to navigate in the library. It could just be me but jaws is saying in wmp "treeview, closed" instead of treeview album etc etc. But winamp can't go by album and artist, but that doesn't matter since I usually make playlists in WMP. On the other hand, if you meant ripping, WMP does a supirior job, besides from CDEX or exact audio copy or any program deticated to ripping. I've only tried ripping with nero a couple of times and that was a long time ago. Seemed more hard work than CDEX or media player so I didn't use it again. The max will show up in Windows Media player as what ever the speed of media was rated the last time you burned a cd. Find out what your drive is rated for and buy the corresponding media. If you are running 98SE or above then the only thing you would need to update is your drive. Do you use nero? hi tim, that's exactly the problem with me. i'm not very patient. ideally, cd's would work, and same with dvd's, just like floppies. copy and paste, and you could have an option in the menu to finalize or close or whatever you want to call it. but i don't like trying to tab through all the buttons and sliders and boxes, i like a quick f8 or alt+f c or something like that. Check the view menu if you want to fool with it, but it isn't useful to us. Just turn it off when you start up Windows Media Player by hitting ctrl-1. You can rip directly to .mp3 with Real player. If you want to rip using any other format such as mp3, you will have to go into the options and change that. With 9, you needed an mp3 incoder. But with 10, you do not. I don't know, even my Ipod supports the Real format, both protected and unprotected. As for the real format, well that's just too proprietary and will never be supported widely by portable devices and is a pain to convert so that's a non starter for me even if it is the best player in the world. It isn't a music format. Not only is it a windows media audio format, but it's also the best format by a mile. Heere is my 2 cents. Considering windows media player 10 works really well with jaws and I wouldn't mind betting that it also works with window eyes and any other half decent screen reader, then wmp 10 gets my vote and so does the wma format mentioned. hi tyler can't comment for sure, but he's talking about media player. it goes in percent, but as he said it gives you more info. the wm 9 dialog isn't very accessible, but apparently that changed with 10. haven't bothered to waste an hour and a half to grab 10 to find out, i'd prefer about 40 minutes for winamp's full version. Gold wave allows you to tweak audio files (as Keven said, volume). You can also tweak various other things, such as echo, reverb, and I'm not sure what else. Oh yeah, you can convert between file formatts, and you can also change channels (so that the right speaker is now on the left speaker). The great thing is that if you record a mono audiobook from cassette, you can change it into stario with this feature. Goldwave will probably cost around $50-60, maybe less. That's nothing compaired to 200 dollars for sound forge, which most people like myself don't need. You could try a demo of goldwave, as well. You will need to have media player 10 though to rip losslessly. The format I use is WMA rather than WAV. The WMA format has the advantage that it supports ID3 tags which WAV doesn't. The ID3 tags are used to hold information about the music such as artist, album name, track number, track title, genre, year released, etc. The WMA format also takes a little less space than WAV as it's compressed but compressed losslessly. What you'll need to do? 1. Start windows media player. 2. Press alt and T to open the tools menu. 3. Use the up arrow to find the options menu and press enter. 4. You'll now be in the player tab. Press shift & tab to move up to the list of tabs and then right arrow to locate the ripping tab. 5. Tabbing once will land you on the change button. Pressing spacebar or enter will open a dialogue that will allow you to change where you rip your music to. Initially this will be set to my music in the my documents folder. 6. Pressing tab again will land you on the file name button. This is where you can specify how you want your ripped music files to be named. The default is that you'll get a folder with the artist name and inside there a folder with the album name. Opening the album folder will reveal the tracks in the format track number dash track title. 7. Pressing tab again will land you in a combo box where you can choose the format of your ripped music. The choices are MP3, windows media audio, WAV or windows media audio lossless. 8. Pressing tab again will land you on a button where you can go and learn a little more about MP3 and WMA formats. 9. Pressing tab again will land you on the copy protect checkbox. Make sure this is unchecked otherwise you'll start having problems moving your music around from player to player. 10. The next checkbox is rip music when CD is inserted. This is very useful if you want to rip a number of CD's at a time. If you have media player started and this is checked, when you close your CD drawer with a CD inserted, it will be automatically ripped. 11. The following checkbox is eject CD when ripping is complete. This again is useful with the above checkbox so that you can keep feeding CD's into the computer and have them ejected to take out and put the next CD in. 12. Tabbing again will land you on a compare music formats. This is another informational option to go and find out more about formats and listen to some samples that demonstrate the differences in format. 13. Now you've probably noticed that I've missed a combo box while describing this. It's only seen if you have the MP3 or windows media audio format chosen and it let's you choose the quality of your ripped music. It doesn't show if you choose WAV or windows media audio lossless as these are always ripped at 100% quality. If you do want to use MP3 or WMA at lower bit rates, you can use the arrow keys to choose the quality. If you use your JAWS cursor each time you change the setting you'll see some extra information about the quality you've chosen. 14. When you've made all your changes tab to the OK button and press enter to save them. They'll remain as your default settings. That's what I don't get. If real would ditch that format and have a player like winamp, I'm sure they might get a bigger audience. Besides, I burned cds with real player for well over 2 years on my old win 98 machine. I can even see real player being supior to winamp since it burns as fast as 52 x for free. Winamp, even the payed version, only burns as fast as 40 or 48 x i can't remember. But I guess that's not my say, and I'm rambling on, I'd better stop. What you'll need to do? 1. Start windows media player. 2. Press alt and T to open the tools menu. 3. Use the up arrow to find the options menu and press enter. 4. You'll now be in the player tab. Press shift & tab to move up to the list of tabs and then right arrow to locate the ripping tab. 5. Tabbing once will land you on the change button. Pressing spacebar or enter will open a dialogue that will allow you to change where you rip your music to. Initially this will be set to my music in the my documents folder. 6. Pressing tab again will land you on the file name button. This is where you can specify how you want your ripped music files to be named. The default is that you'll get a folder with the artist name and inside there a folder with the album name. Opening the album folder will reveal the tracks in the format track number dash track title. 7. Pressing tab again will land you in a combo box where you can choose the format of your ripped music. The choices are MP3, windows media audio, WAV or windows media audio lossless. 8. Pressing tab again will land you on a button where you can go and learn a little more about MP3 and WMA formats. 9. Pressing tab again will land you on the copy protect checkbox. Make sure this is unchecked otherwise you'll start having problems moving your music around from player to player. 10. The next checkbox is rip music when CD is inserted. This is very useful if you want to rip a number of CD's at a time. If you have media player started and this is checked, when you close your CD drawer with a CD inserted, it will be automatically ripped. 11. The following checkbox is eject CD when ripping is complete. This again is useful with the above checkbox so that you can keep feeding CD's into the computer and have them ejected to take out and put the next CD in. 12. Tabbing again will land you on a compare music formats. This is another informational option to go and find out more about formats and listen to some samples that demonstrate the differences in format. 13. Now you've probably noticed that I've missed a combo box while describing this. It's only seen if you have the MP3 or windows media audio format chosen and it let's you choose the quality of your ripped music. It doesn't show if you choose WAV or windows media audio lossless as these are always ripped at 100% quality. If you do want to use MP3 or WMA at lower bit rates, you can use the arrow keys to choose the quality. If you use your JAWS cursor each time you change the setting you'll see some extra information about the quality you've chosen. 14. When you've made all your changes tab to the OK button and press enter to save them. They'll remain as your default settings. Once I've ripped a CD I use a program called goldwave to set the volume so that all my ripped music is at the same volume level. You know how some CD's are quiter than others so this makes listening to shuffled music a lot better. That's probably another topic for another day if you don't currently use goldwave. I stil don't like the fact that when I convert to .mp3, I can only fit about 40 songs onto an mp3 cd, as a posed to 150 if I download the songs. I think its stupid that real player doesn't allow .mp3 conversion, but that is about the only setback I can see, although you have to pay for some things which is even more of a drag. I stil like winamp, though, but I use meedia player for leasure music listening since its real easy to make playlists in. Hi Tyler. You can use your JAWS cursor to check the status of the rip. Just below the menu bar there's a toolbar that says 'stop rip' when ripping is in progress and this changes to 'rip music' when the rip is completed. The automatic ejection of the CD is more convenient though, of course. Regards. Hi Andre. Yes, it's certainly true that music of low complexity will need less information held to represent the music. When I've previously ripped in variable rate MP3 format with high quality, it was difficult to find a 60's track that wanted more than 192kbps whereas most off the music that I listen to, 70's and 80's classic rock, is looking for 256kbps and above. When ripping in lossless WMA, this applies variable rate and so again will yield smaller files for music of low complexity. Regards. Hi Brandon. It was a while back when I looked at the latest version of CDEX and I think it's the version on www.whitestick.co.uk that was no longer freeware, version 1.6.0 beta. Despite it being advertised as freeware, I remember downloading and seeing that it had now become shareware. I still use version 1.51 occasionally when I'm wanting to rip and merge tracks from a CD into WAV files and this version still seems to be around on most web sites though most recommend that you upgrade the lame encoder. Couldn't agree with you more that it's all about what you listen to and on what equipment. Personally, I have a laptop in my lounge linked wirelessly to my collection which is held on external hard drives in my converted loft office. The laptop has an external USB soundcard that is in turn linked into my Linn hi-fi and I get a great sound with lossless WMA. I also have a creative zen portable player and have music encoded in MP3 at 320kbps on this player, so, as you say, it's really horses for courses. Regards. You could always try cdex or exact audio copy. (I don't have the link right off hand for the latter). By use of a compressor (a good one, mind you like laim or such) you can get a variable bitrate, which means the music will go up or down in KBPS depending on the complexity or voluem of the music. There is a very comprehensive guide on installing and using the program but, again, I lost the link- sorry. I'm sure if you googled it, though, you might find exact audio copy. ahem... I'd have to say that real player would win against playing all filetypes even though it may be hard to get used to. Its easy to make a playlist, and at least in my experience its a good all-around player. You can rip music from real player, too. It it doesn't get much simpler: put a cd into the tray and have it rip to your library automaticly. Only problem is that its real format which is a drag. Not to argue or anything but I haven't seen a big difference in winamp and windows meedia player, though. Winamp plays .ogg. Is that the only player that does? This is a method, I believe, that is kind of like bariable bitrate. By this I mean that the bitrates will switch between 128 and 60 or something similar, depending of the complexity of the music and part of the small. By doing this, the music will sound just as good and the file will be smaller. Maybe this is wrong. Sorry if it is. Ripping cds with windows meedia player is easy: 1. open windows meedia player.2. Asuming you have version 10, tab until you hear "rip cd" or something; even if you don't have 10, however, something similar will be there. 3. Press space, and tab until you see a list box with checkboxes. You can check which songs you would like ripped; all are checked as default, I think. Click rip music. If you'd like to change where your music gets ripped to, the format of the music and the quolity of the music which you rip, press alt-t and go to options. Press control tab until you hear rip music; theres an option where you can set the cd to eject when its finished, I'd check this since its hard to tell when the cd is done if you can't see the progress bar and wmp doesn't really have a finish diologue or anything. hi kevin, you probably have some good points here. i haven't really bothered to try and mess with media player for live albums in my posession. as for doing better with WMA, yeah. some of microsoft's products do actually work together. there are several bonuses for winamp, though. for one, it's about half the size of media player, even with the full version, which if you're on dial up like myself is a plus. also all the shoutcast stations that are available and free to broadcast to and listen to. i'm a pretty big fan of internet radio and i like shoutcast and icecast stuff. the winamp library i think does actually rip into WMA lossless, in the latest version 5.22. mp3 ripping is not available without purchasse, which is kind of sucky, but it does offer aac+ and if there were media players out there you can bet i'd have everything in that beautiful beautiful format. Hi Mari. Not a stupid question at all - the myriad of formats are definitely confusing until you get more acquainted with digital music. Basically, lossless means that nothing has been taken away from the music during compression. So, all of your high and low frequencies are left intact and therefore the quality of the source music is preserved. The opposite of lossless is known as lossy. This covers formats like MP3 and WMA files ripped at lower bit rates. With lossy compression, some of the high and low frequencies are lost to compress the music down into the smallest space possible. There are also a number of psycho-acoustic techniques used to remove parts of the music that is deemed will not be missed by the listener such as quieter sounds that happen to be playing whilst there is a louder sound almost obscuring it. All formats have their own proprietary algorithms that dictate how the music is processed and that's why it's never a good idea to convert from one lossy format to another. Lossless files take up a lot more disc space than lossy formats and so it's worth bearing this in mind when deciding on what format to use. Regards. Hello, Beginning with windows media player 9, you should be able to rip cds. The default is wma. If you want to rip using any other format such as mp3, you will have to go into the options and change that. With 9, you needed an mp3 incoder. But with 10, you do not. I did have a lot of trouble with media player telling me I needed an in coder with 10. but I no longer have the problem. I am not exactly sure what I did to get it fixed, but I'm ripping to mp3 just fine now. It doesn't seem like windows media plaer 10 is all that speech friendly though. Hi Rosemary. Here's a few notes I put together for a friend on ripping CD's using windows media player 10. Hope they may be of some use. Now, for ripping losslessly. The good news is that the program is free and you'll probably already have it. It's windows media player. You will need to have media player 10 though to rip losslessly. The format I use is WMA rather than WAV. The WMA format has the advantage that it supports ID3 tags which WAV doesn't. The ID3 tags are used to hold information about the music such as artist, album name, track number, track title, genre, year released, etc. The WMA format also takes a little less space than WAV as it's compressed but compressed losslessly. What you'll need to do? 1. Start windows media player. 2. Press alt and T to open the tools menu. 3. Use the up arrow to find the options menu and press enter. 4. You'll now be in the player tab. Press shift & tab to move up to the list of tabs and then right arrow to locate the ripping tab. 5. Tabbing once will land you on the change button. Pressing spacebar or enter will open a dialogue that will allow you to change where you rip your music to. Initially this will be set to my music in the my documents folder. 6. Pressing tab again will land you on the file name button. This is where you can specify how you want your ripped music files to be named. The default is that you'll get a folder with the artist name and inside there a folder with the album name. Opening the album folder will reveal the tracks in the format track number dash track title. 7. Pressing tab again will land you in a combo box where you can choose the format of your ripped music. The choices are MP3, windows media audio, WAV or windows media audio lossless. 8. Pressing tab again will land you on a button where you can go and learn a little more about MP3 and WMA formats. 9. Pressing tab again will land you on the copy protect checkbox. Make sure this is unchecked otherwise you'll start having problems moving your music around from player to player. 10. The next checkbox is rip music when CD is inserted. This is very useful if you want to rip a number of CD's at a time. If you have media player started and this is checked, when you close your CD drawer with a CD inserted, it will be automatically ripped. 11. The following checkbox is eject CD when ripping is complete. This again is useful with the above checkbox so that you can keep feeding CD's into the computer and have them ejected to take out and put the next CD in. 12. Tabbing again will land you on a compare music formats. This is another informational option to go and find out more about formats and listen to some samples that demonstrate the differences in format. 13. Now you've probably noticed that I've missed a combo box while describing this. It's only seen if you have the MP3 or windows media audio format chosen and it let's you choose the quality of your ripped music. It doesn't show if you choose WAV or windows media audio lossless as these are always ripped at 100% quality. If you do want to use MP3 or WMA at lower bit rates, you can use the arrow keys to choose the quality. If you use your JAWS cursor each time you change the setting you'll see some extra information about the quality you've chosen. 14. When you've made all your changes tab to the OK button and press enter to save them. They'll remain as your default settings. Once I've ripped a CD I use a program called goldwave to set the volume so that all my ripped music is at the same volume level. You know how some CD's are quiter than others so this makes listening to shuffled music a lot better. That's probably another topic for another day if you don't currently use goldwave.
