TIVO or Slingbox

2011-04-06 Thread Cooley, Daniel (Law)
I'm wondering whether anyone has had experience setting up their TIVO or
working with a slingbox unit which allows remote access to TIVO or cable
TV over the internet. If so, I would like to discuss with you. Would you
provide me your email and I will take the matter offline.

On this topic of recording TV and Slingbox, where would one get the
hardware that does work with this program? Would it work with Dish Net
boxes that are used in apartment complexes where they give you whatever
package for $5 a month? I don't know what kind of receivers they use where
I'm thinking of moving, but I really miss recording and watching later.
Doing audio only would be nice, and being blind, I wouldn't subscribe to

Oh, nice, but can that be put on apartment setups where they use some kind

That's what they would have here and at the place I'm considering moving to.
I wasn't sure if you're stuck with the kind of receiver the manager wants or

Slingbox for Lisa channels not changing

2010-06-04 Thread Petro T. Giannakopoulos
Did you connect the IR Blaster cable cord to the back of your Slingbox
hardware and the other end of this cable in front of your cable or satellite
box. The cable has 2 Infrared red sensors that should be in front of the
cable box or satellite box. During the Slingbox hardware setup your husband
needs to input the correct cable or satellite box make and model number.
During the setup your husband should have tested and passed the remote
control questions. One of them was to see if you could change the channel by
clicking a button on that setup screen. Did he pass that test? Also, if its
a DVR box you need to tell it is one and not just a box. This test ensures
when you are using the Sling Player software application will change
channels when you press the numbers row on the keyboard. When you press the
numbers row on your keyboard like 124 this info acts like a remote control
and send out the signal from the Slingbox to the sensors that are located in
front of the box you are trying to manipulate. . Not sure if things have
changed now. Are you using Sling Player 2.0 software because from what I
read you are using the web to access your Slingbox signal and you don't want
to do this. You need to install the Sling Player 2.0 software application
there. It is built with many keyboard shortcuts. Note: The Sling Player 2.0
software along with JAWS 11 cannot read what appears on your tv screen that
sighted users get to see like the menus, tv guide and to set DVR recordings.
It's invisible. But you can change channels and hear your tv signal anywhere
in the world. If its a DVR your husband can tell you how to get to the DVR
recordings area by telling you with Sling Player open and running how many
up or down arrows to do and then activate the item to go to the recordings
playlist. Not sure if you are interested in this but bringing it up. Will
require you to memorize. If you are going to the website version the
changing of channels does not work with the numbers row and I think you are
doing this from what I read. This tip is not 100 percent fool proof but I
did test the Sling website version myself over 2 weeks ago and the keyboard
shortcuts didn't work but I tried only a few that I know here. Did you
install the active x for the web version? After you are logged in this
worked for me. Much of the text on the screen on the web version are links
but JAWS does not show them as links. Just press your enter keyboard key on
the text and they will act as links. Toggle the remote to be hidden there.
Ask your husband if the remote control has disappearred. Then what I did
here was a shift+F10 or try your Context menu keyboard key. This should
bring a context menu list. In one of the submenus there are options to
change the channel up or down one digit. Say you are on channel 8 and if you
choose up option you will be on channel 9. Hopefully the manufacturer of
your tv cable box satellite box and SlingMedia put some extra effort for
your remote to work like it did for me. The remote control both within Sling
Player 2 and the web version are invisible. Right now you should install
Sling Player 2.0 if it isn't already on your PC. Here is the Sling Player 2
download page for windows PCs.

http://support.slingbox.com/go/windows-download-desktop-us

This is for users based in the USA. They make Slingboxes for other countries
and requires those overseas to use another version of Sling Player 2. You
can install Sling Player Mobile software for your phone.

Hope this helps.

2010-06-04 Thread DJ DOCTOR P

Hello Brent,
You can get to the Sling Box via your Dishnetwork online account.
But as for the other question, you will need to ask a tech rep at
Dishnetwork about that one.

But in my opinion, I think it will work.
But make sure that the dish itself is a Dishnetwork dish and not a Direct TV
dish.

Our receivers won't work with Direct TV dishes.
And like wise, Direct TV receivers won't work with Dishnetwork dishes.
Hope this helps.
My best regards.

Saw your post on the Slingbox. The on screen menus and settings

if you have a screen reader. I have the Slingbox and JAWS 9. The
satellite box's settings like DVR functions do not read on the
PC using JAWS 9 so you know. But you can change your channels
and use Applian's At-Large Recorder 2.3 to record your shows.

Hi
The Slingbox hardware and SlingPlayer software can be used by a
blind person with JAWS by using the keyboard shortcuts. The
SlingPlayer software version I use here is 1.4+.

Shortcuts like ctrl+m to toggle the audio, alt+P for the Player
menu.

DirecTV satellite provider is working on a service which is
called remote bookings which will allow you to control your
DVR (Digital Video Recorder) satellite box from your computer.
This is in testing phase. I asked DirecTV if I could participate
in the testing and was told I had no business in this. I told
them to use proper HTML code when designing this new remote
bookings service which should be available sometime next year.

You cannot control your DVR box's functions completely nor
configure your DVR box menu's using the SlingPlayer software.

Hello Petro,

Huh? They said you have no business in this upon asking to be part of a

you, but that kind of response seems rather inappropriate as well. If you
received such a response in writing, would you share it with me off list?
Of course, I am primarily concerned as an accessibility advocate...

Subject: Slingbox DirecTV info

Hi Paul,

Yes. I am very concerned about that. I'd like to see that in writing for

has this and it is totally inaccessible. It makes it look like your remote

2007-11-29 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Hi, John. They are indeed working on it right now. What we need to do is to
let them know that they need to make it accessible. As I understand it, you
can already go into dishonline.com and add things to your dvr. You just
can't manage the files that are already there yet. But they have a test
icon on that page. The problem is that the dishonline page isn't accessible.
First, they need to fix that.

Dish network, right now, is working on making it possible for you to
 manage
your dvr from your computer. You can't copy files due to copyright
restrictions, but you could add shows to your dvr, delete others and
possibly even start one playing. The problem is that dish online, right
 now,
is not accessible, at least with window-eyes. Haven't tried it with jfw
 yet.
We need to write to dish network or echostar and tell them that this would
be a really good move if their guide page was accessible and if their
 blind
users could manage their dvr's. They are currently in a testing phase on
 dishonline.com;
However, that page is so inaccessible, that you can't even find the
 feedback
 button,
The models 622 and 722 both have network capabilities. One can connect a
Ethernet cable or use a homeplug AC adapter to transfer via the electrical
 outlets in your home.
We need to start a movement and convince echo star that with a little
 work,
they can make this completely accessible to their blind customers.
Echostar acquired slingbox last month. They now have a package for
connecting your slingbox to your dvr. This allows you to watch programs on
your dvr from any pc. You can watch programs on your dvr in aany hotel or
any place where you can get internet access.
The problem is that the software mimics the dish remote allowing you to
 play
items or add new ones you forgot to add when you were home. Unfortunately,
 with thisgraphical interface,
This is not accessible. Yet another thing to see if we can get them to
 realize and work on.

slingbox around a month ago. From what I can tell, their software, at least
for dish, comes up looking like the dish remote. You press buttons to get it
to do what you want.
Very disappointing.
Don't know if you can use their regular software to access your dish dvr.

1. For those of you using Jaws and Slingbox, how is the
accessibility? Will I need sighted help to install and/or set
it up?

If you have good Jaws skills you can do it yourself. You need to
famliarize yourself with SlingBox hardware'ss connectors like
coax, S VHS and so on. I don't know which model you have.

You can call 1-877-GO-SLING.

You need to know how to open a port on your router. Port
forwarding.

2. If I install Slingbox and my mom is watching something on
her TV,
can I watch another channel on my PC at the same time?

NO. What I would tell your cable company is to run a single
coaxial cable line into your room where your tv is. And connect
this new cable line into the SlingBox hardware.

I don't know if you have a tv set in your room and if your
computer is in the same room.

I have DirecTV andI have DTV Tivo box and I run a composite AV
cables out of the tivo box to the SlinbBox's single AV input.

3. Do I need a TV tuner card on my PC? I do have one, so that
shouldn't be a problem.

NO. Sling Media requires no tv tuner card to work.

4. Is there anything else I should know before going forward
with this?

I would buy the additional cable box. Get the model number for
the cable box. You will need it in order to do the setup
process.

Call Sling tech support and they will guide you to do the setup
over the phone.

Call them a few times before you are actually ready to do the
setup.

Make all proper physical connections.

You also get a IR Blaster sensor.

The Sling Player is accessible as you can use many keyboard
shortcuts to control your cable box. ctrl+M toggles the sound.

Alt+P is the player menu.
The SlingPlayer has only 3 menus.

Every SlingBox has a IP Finder address.

When you call Sling tech support tell them you need the direct
URL address for the latest SlinPlayer version so you can
download it to your PC.

Do not run the software.

You will just download the .exe file on your hard drive. Have
all connections setup and then you call tech support to
continue.

You do not use the CD that comes with SlingBox hardware.

Note:
To change a channel wthin SlingPlayer software you use your
keyboard's numbers row keys.

If your calbe company uses the 0 then you have to use the 0
also.

Like 02 for channel 2.

Jaws does not read the cable box's menus nor the program guide
listings.

It's all invisible. Jaws cursor doesn't work either.

You can change the channels from the SlingPlayer software.

What are the differences between the Slingbox devices?

2006-12-27 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

I received the Slingbox device for Christmas which allows you to watch your
television channels over the internet. I know there are three versions of
the Slingbox, but I don't know the differences between them. I know I
didn't get the Pro version, but I'd like to know the differences between it
and the other two. You can give me a web site to look this information up.
I tried going to http://slingbox.com and got a very cryptic page with
graphical links.

Thanks for the help.

SlingBox answers here

2006-12-02 Thread petrakigianos-giasou
I have been using the SlingBox now for 4 months. I have here
DirecTV satellite service, The latest Sling Player software and
firmware version.

I have the first and original SlingBox device. Some tips here.

To change channels you press the numbers row on your keyboard.

SlingBox has keyboard shortcuts for us. You are not forced to
use the remote control that appears on the SlingPlayer software
screen. You can toggle the remote to apear or not appear on your
screen. I never use the remote as it is not JAWS friendly the
time I tried to use it. Use the keyboard shortcuts.

I have a list of these shortctcuts. I will post to this list
soon when I find them.

CTRL+M - mutes the tv sound.
M - brings up menu list for your remote control.
space bar - to select an item. Do not use your enter key.

You will have to open a port on your router. Its port 5001.

Tech support: 1-877-GO-SLING

You will place in foront of your satellite/cable box a IR
Blaster which will allow you to control your receiver box with
your keyboard. Your keyboard becomes your remote control. For
both sighted and blind users.

You must have DSL/cable high speed internet for SlingBox to work
well for you.

I use A DirecTV Tivo box here.

Hi Petro,

Can you set up a recording using your screen reader and SlingBox, or are you
limited to just the basic functions of the receiver such as power on/off,
muting and changing channels?

More SlingBox answers

2006-12-02 Thread petrakigianos-giasou
To Gary King:

The SlingBox allows you to control your device wherever you are
whether you are at home or in another country.

You ask if you can record?

If you have a Tivo like I do from DirecTV satellite I can record
on the fly recordings.

Say I am in another country with my notebook pc. The notebook
has the SlingPlayer installed. Your home pc is connected to your
Slingbox device and the Slingbox is connected tyo your router.

Your home PC doesn't have to be on. Just your modemand router
have to be on only.

on the notebook PC I run the SlingPlayer software, sign in.

You will hear your tv sound come on. You need broadband
connection.

The shortcut to activate the record button is ctrl+shift+r

The above command starts the recording for me. My DirecTV box
starts the recording for me. I haven't done this much so I may
have forgotten a step or 2.

Another thing to note is the recording the Tivo makes will be on
the Tivo hard drive and not on your computer.

For me JAWS doesn't read the Tivo options - buttons that one
sees on a regular tv set. I have memorize the tivo screen list
of buttons and options. My tivo makes a beeping sound everytime
I go up and down.

The llingbox is great for watching live tv.

If you think you can access the tv guide and all on the computer
so far I cannot. Jaws cannot read anything.

Oh, thought this was like a Tivo where you download content on to it and
hook it to your TV. Or is there another one I heard of engadget called the
slinkbox with a K that is for that purpose.
