The only modification I'd make is a fully mechanical mirror lockup. An LX-

It is heavy to hump around, but the results are worth the

IMO the Pentax 67 is very light with a waist-level finder. I've been lugging an

Hi Maris:
Thank you very much for your comments!
As it happens, the shot was not sharpened at all! I did have to use the magic
wand tool in Photoshop to adjust the levels of the cliff behind the breaker, so
that the edge contrast there is higher than normal. The only other adjustment
was despeckling, which tends to eliminate artefacts from the scanning process,
and may in fact reduce the overall apparent sharpness.

RE: Possible problem for digital MZ-S?

2001-10-02 Thread John Coyle

My reading of the article referred to, and a couple of others in the same
thread, is that the problem lies not with wide-angle lens, but with large
apertures, where the light rays from the edges of the image-forming cone will
subtend an angle which will not project any light onto the pixel in the CCD
(because the pixel sits at the bottom of a well), and which may lead to light
scatter within the light-box. Visualisation of the way the light is refracted
onto the film-plane would seem to confirm this.

The solution may lie with changes to CCD manufacturing techniques, to eliminate
the 'well', but there are others on this list far better qualified than I am to
comment on this!

Re: Just bought a HP Photosmart S20

2001-10-02 Thread Jaume Lahuerta

Paul,

I have been using the S20 for more than a year, and
one of the biggest problems that I see is the
unability to scan several mounted slides at the same
time (like stripes of negatives).

About colors, I noticed that when scanning negatives,
people faces (and skin in general) came up too red.
This is not as much noticeable in slides.
Dust is also an issue, but I don't know if other
scanners have the same problem.
Recently it seems that there is a lack of focus in my
unit when scanning slides. This is documented in HP
support web pages and I am going to try the (simple)
proposed solution.

I tried vuescan once, but I find it little
userfriendly and I wasn't patient enough to
investigate further. I have herd only good things
about it though.

Anyway, i think it is worth for the money (specially
what you paid :-) ), although I am beggining to
consider upgrading it.

FS: K 45-125 f4 and K35 f3.5 in mint condition with boxes

2001-10-02 Thread Paul Ewins

Hi all,
I've just picked up a K 45-125 f4 and a K35 f3.5 and hope for a quick
resale, so will accept reasonable offers. Both lenses were previously the
property of someone described as a bit of hoarder who bought them and only
used them a couple of times. They are in mint condition with no defects that
I could find.

The 45-125 has both caps, the case, strap (still coiled up in plastic bag)
and is in it's original box with the foam, the piece of cardboard with the
lens type and serial stamped on it and a little booklet about the K lens
range. The case needs a little repair on one seam where the glue has started
to fail. The box is a little worn.

The 35 has both caps, the case but no strap and no hood (may not have been
included originally). The box has the foam, the piece of cardboard with the
lens type and serial stamped on it and a little booklet about the K lens
range. Once again the box shows sign of wear.

I'm open to any offers and will happily exchange or part exchange for other
pentax equipment (not necessarily in mint condition). In particular I am
after an AF400T or a Metz 45CL3/4/5. Postage will be at cost.

If you want more information just ask.

That depends.. I find that the 645 is excellent for landscape due to the fact that the
system is portable in a totally different way than the 67 system. A Pentax 645n with
five lenses covering focal length from 20 - 200 mm (in 35mm terms) weight no more than
those popular Nikon and Canon high-end cameras with three of those equally popular 2.8
zoom lenses covering the same focal length range. In other words, a 645 system can
substitute a high-end 35mm system. I fear that the 67 system is in a different league
and one really should figure out if one can manage the weight and size of the system.
A Pentax rep told me that a significant percentage of Pentax 67 users ended up selling
off the system because they experience that they use it less and less due to the
size/weight issue. I've not heard of similar experience with the 645 system.
It all boils down to whether or not you can take the weight penalty of the 67 system.
If you're roadside landscape shooter, by all means choose the 67. However, if you
carry your medium format gear to mountain tops think twice and consider the 645
system.

This is a common technique when imaging [8-)] trains. The
base photograph is a landscape, with the variable of the train
inserted fleetingly. Multiple apparatus can give the option of
at least different format or film or both for the one attempt.
You can also alter shutter speed and/or aperture. I've often
wondered if the technique has applications elsewhere. Obvious
areas are things like firework displays or rocket launches.
Maybe it would be useful for aurora photography.

Once again, I feel like a voice in the wilderness.
For the record, I have owned a 645 (Bronica ETRs) and presently
 own a Pentax 6x7.
For the record, I hate the 645 format, for a variety of reasons,
most of which relate to printing the negatives. The film
transport in a 645 is from bottom to top (or vice versa, it
doesn't matter). This means that the negative sits vertically in
the enlarger. Great if you shoot portraits, not so good if you
 shoot landscapes.
 I shoot landscapes.
The 6x7 is extremely 35mm like, although it is about 4 times
larger. It operates in much the same fashion as a 35mm camera. I
am not sure about the new 67II. I have never seen one. Perhaps
it works like a more modern camera.
 I like the Pentax 6x7 a lot. I have the 45, 75, 90LS, 105, and
135 macro for it, and have used the 165 and 200mm (old). I also
have, and would recommend the extension tubes and hand grip.
Especially the hand grip. It is worth the cameras weight in
gold. The 45mm is extremely good, the 75 is not so good, the 90,
105, 135 and 165 are excellent, and the 200 is not so good.
The nice thing is, because of the smaller magnifications, a less
than excellent lens can still give excellent results.
I have successfully done handheld photos with the 6x7 at speeds
as low as 1/30th with the 105mm lens. The weight of the camera
helps, as at around 3 kilos with the meter prism, it has a lot
of inertia. A tripod is recommended whenever possible, and not
some wimpy little thing. You need a good, solid tripod.
It is heavy to hump around, but the results are worth the
 effort.
If you are planning on using the camera commercially for
weddings and the like, the 6x7 is wasted on that sort of work,
go for the 645. If you are planning on doing landscape
photography mostly, the 6x7 is better.
If you are planning on shooting street with a medium format, The
 Plaubel 6x7 (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/plaubel.htm for a
review) can't be beat. The 80mm lens, is a really nice street
focal length in the 6x7 format.
FWIW, I shoot 4x5 as well, but I find that often, I can shoot
6x7 and get the same quality on the print. I can't do that with
 645.

I am not sure that I understand you correctly here, but manual stop down
lenses and equipment (eg, M42-K adapters, reversing rings) do have an
aperture-simulation pin, which is fixed to the 'lens is fully open'
position. Problem is that the rest position of the aperture-simulation
pin on the body is the 'lens is stopped down X stops' position, where X
is something like 7 or 8. So the meter reading would be quite wrong

Re: I've got my LX (...and a question)

2001-10-02 Thread Heiko Hamann

Hi Bob,

This is pretty standard. The OTF metering feature causes this
difference. The display is just an approximation of the speed. The OTF
sensor will do an actual calculation of required exposure duration in
real time.

The time will also be different with film in the LX. It is often longer
without film loaded.

That was my fault: there was no film in the camera. So the metering took
quite more time than with a film inside. I also noticed the difference
between display and actual exposure duration you've mentioned, if a film
was in the camera. But this difference is much smaller. Thanks for your
hint.

get better results handholding 1/30 by using the mirror lock, which I
find quite conveniently placed when shooting horizontally (but for
verticals it can be a pain).

If anyone's interested, I have some scans from a 67 slide that I shot at
1/60 f2.4 handheld, no mirrorlock. I can put together an overall and a
magnified section (trust me, you don't want to see the whole scan at
full resolution...it's 250 megs). It is sharp. Not as sharp as it
would have been on a tripod, but sharp enough that the 8x10 I printed
looks tack sharp, and I don't see the softness until I size it to 11x14
or so.

I bought a Pentax 67 for a few reasons:

- I was already a big fan of Pentax SMC
- it was the biggest-negative camera that I could conceivably run around with
- I'm a big fan of changeable finders

I looked long and hard at the Pentax 645n (and a couple of other 645s,
I'll admit), but the 67 called to me. I like the handling, the size,
the shape, and most of all the simplicity.

I did just recommend the 645n to a friend, because he owns an MZ-5n and
is very happy with its controls and layout...and the 645n is basically a
giant MZ-5n (and the old 645 is basically a giant ME Super). The 67 is
basically a giant K1000, unless you get it with a non-metering prism
(like I did), in which case it is a giant K1000 with no meter.

He got his 645n, and it really is quite glorious, and if I were looking
for another system to be into, Pentax 645 would be it. But having just
sacrificed one of the three systems I was running in order to better one
of the other two, I think a third system would be a foolish investment.
For the record, I sold my 4x5 to finance more 67 lenses and
accessories...which makes me now a 100% Pentaxer! Other than this one
Sigma lens. But all the systems are Pentax!

Back to 67 vs. 645: the weight issue is a biggie. The 67 is heavy. I
carry it in a LowePro Minitrekker, and on its own I don't notice it, but
add some accessories (or my laptop, which is a stupidly heavy
combination that too often ends up in my bag) and I really start to feel
the weight on my shoulders after an hour or so of walking around. If
hiking with it, I prefer to put the 67 on a monopod and treat it like a
really heavy walking stick. When street shooting with it, I put it on
one of those weight-distributing neoprene shoulder straps, which also
helps, but again, it hits me after maybe an hour that I'm carrying
something really heavy.

Also, with heavy use I began to find my hands cramping where my thumb
attaches -- the weight of the film advance and, on the other hand, the
weight of the mirrorbox when focussing, both really impact on your poor
thumbs. My
kinesiologist-physiotherapist-soon-to-be-chiropractor-and-acupuncturist-fiancée
gave me some stretching exercises to do before going shooting, which
have helped immensely (which I'll share with any 67 users experiencing
the same problems). Now I just have the problem when I forget to stretch.

The 645, having a motor drive, obviously doesn't have that problem. It
is also a quicker camera to 'grab' a shot with. The 67 can be speedy,
too, with practice, but I find that the nature of the camera makes me
shoot less, but take more time getting the shot.

I think the weight is really the big issue. Go pick one up and feel the
weight. If it doesn't bother you, the big neg is really worth it.

I agree with Paal's assessment that the 645n system is a good
replacement for 35mm. Until the MZ-S came about, I was convinced that
I'd buy a 645n before I'd buy a new 35mm body. Now I'm waffling again,
but I decided to ignore that decision by spending my money on tricking
out my 67 instead.

I love my 67.

Tripod collar/K 300 F4

2001-10-02 Thread Reg Wiest

Does anyone know if someone manufactures a tripod collar that would fit my
old Pentax K 300 F4? This is a big, heavy lens that I like optically but
find extremely difficult to use on a tripod. My Tamron 200-500 F5.6 is
heavier yet, but having a tripod collar makes it a joy to use on a tripod ‹
at least compared to my 300.

UniqueToo wrote:
When I put one of my manual lenses on the ZX-7 and use the flash,
how do I know where to set the aperature?

If you're using the RTF (built-in, pop-up flash), don't worry -- TTL flash
metering circuitry in the camera body will quench the flash once sufficient
light has struck the film. Likewise, if you're using an external flash
that's a dedicated TTL unit, the camera body's TTL flash metering circuitry
will quench the external flash once sufficient light has struck the film.
If you have an external flash which is non-dedicated and non-TTL, then there
should be a scale on the flash body giving the appropriate lens aperture.

Hope this helps.

if things get to the point where carry-on sizes are reduced to a real
minimum then it may be the only choice. I once travelled on Ethiopia
for a while with a professional photographer who had brought several
hundreds of rolls of film, all in a very large Samsonite case - too
large to carry on anywhere - and he had a lot of experience of
travelling in the countries around the Red Sea, so perhaps the x-ray
machines aren't as bad as they're made out. Or perhaps there is some
way for photographers to arrange for checked luggage to be examined by
hand and not go through the x-rays. Anybody got any ideas about that?

What happens when somebody like Salgado or the Magnum photographers go
to obscure countries? I'm sure they can't carry all their film on as
hand luggage.

Perhaps next time I go to Ethiopia I'll have to go via South Africa,
stock up on film there, and then travel up to Ethiopia.

Preparing for a Day of Photography

2001-10-02 Thread Shel Belinkoff

In the morning, or the evening before, I engage in a regular routine
of maintenance with the cameras I'll be using. This includes the
following:

Making sure all lenses are clean, checking their
front and rear elements, and looking through them
be sure there are no hidden problems;

Be sure that all lens caps and hoods are available,
in good condition, and fit properly;

Blow and clean dust and debris from the camera
bodies;

Check to be sure the shutters are working properly
at all speeds;

Opening the camera back and blowing dust and debris
from all visible areas, checking to be sure there are
no bits of film lodged anywhere in the mechanism;

Clean viewfinders as appropriate (different cameras
require different techniques;

Load film and note on camera body what emulsion and
EI I'm shooting;

Be sure that all meters (built in or hand held) are
set to the proper EI. With some cameras I check to
be sure exposure compensation is off and note whether
camera is on auto pilot or manual;

I take a reading off a grey card or other similar
object under a known light source to be sure meters
are within spec;

Be sure spare batteries for meters and camera are in
the bag;

Make sure film is securely attached to the take-up
spool by winding on a few frames;

Make sure straps are securely attached and that the
strap material is in good condition, showing no signs
of fraying;

Make sure there are at least a half dozen rolls of film
in the bag and that they're appropriate for conditions;

Make sure that the hand held meter is in the bag along
with grey card and blower brush.

Check to be sure removable stickers, several pens, and
a note pad are in the bag;

Be sure all straps, latches, snaps, and zippers are
working properly.

When all this is done I'm ready to go. Have I missed anything?

While this post is made in jest, it brings up something I've been thinking
about. When asked to list a favorite lens, my gut reaction is to say my
right eye. Why not my left eye? Well, it requires a filter to focus past ~7
feet. I find this filter rather annoying. With my brain as the camera, my
right eye can do things that no lens can do. Much sharper than a prime lens,
it can zoom! Futhermore, it has the ability to have great depth of field
while defocusing other suibjects of the field of view. Bokeh! Bah! I don't
have to worry about bokeh! Distortion - 0%. No need to worry about
pincushion or barrel. Wide angle, heck yeah! And rectilinear at that!
Panoramic? No problem there.
I've always thought I was a much better photographer in my own mind VBG.
So when Shel suggest a way to transform the images in our minds into photos,

work (also flat panel by bigger better and very expensive), and will send
 you a copy off list.

I read somewhere that flat panel monitors aren't as good for accurate colour
reproduction as CRTs. But then again, everyone's CRT monitor is set
differently for colour temperature, brightness and contrast. And the phospors
probably vary with brand and tube model anyway. Unless everyone is using a
calibrated system which is supported by their software, we'll all see different
results. But don't let that stop you from trying :)

Cheers,

When I put one of my manual lenses on the ZX-7 and use the flash, how do I
know where to set the aperature? My old ME Super flash told me what
aperature to use based on film speed and strenght of the flash. Will the
ZX-7 flash compensate for the light coming into the lens?

Hmm, your problem seems to me a bit unclear... What MF has to do with
setting the aperture?
However, all depends on the kind of your flash... The ZX-7 will compensate
for the flash light, if only this is a TTL flash...

Modern flat panel displays are the technology of choice for pre-

between units, they have a wider colour gamut than CRTs, and a far
better contrast ratio.

I actually exchanged the first one I had too (due to a more serious
intermittent fault than slightly out of focus slides) but both scanners I
tried scanned slides slightly soft. I don't think it is an adjustment
problem but more a case of it simply being a 'cheap and cheerful' piece of
equipment (as they say: 'you get what you pay for'). The good thing is it
scans prints sharply and at least has the ability to can scan slides and
negatives if necessary. Also since exchanging the first faulty one it has
given over a year of unfailing service (touch wood) so on balance I am happy
with it.

Re: MZ-S Cost...Hey Pentax.

2001-10-02 Thread Nenad Djurdjevic

I don't want a camera with an egg timer and the like - but it would be nice
to have a camera that could take either chemical film and digital film as
the occasion demanded.

I know that some folks get around this problem by carrying six or seven
camera bodies, 57 lenses, databacks, interchangeable finders, interchangeble
screens, tripods and monopods in various sizes, motordrives, bellows
attachments, bulk film packs, polaroid camera for test shots, studio lights,
reflectors, portable darkrooms (chemical and digital), petrol generators (to
power the portable darkrooms, lights etc), etc. - I read your checklist for
the start of each day ;-)

I on the other hand, like to take my camera with me when travelling (usually
with a backpack in remote wilderness areas) so I need to keep the kit light.
I know that carrying just my Olympus XA or an MX would be the most practical
approach but like like many people on the PDML I guess I'm not entirely
practically inclined. Photography is after all a hobby and a passion and
not something that needs to be justified in a practical sense.
