No, I belive the offposite should happen, as more light comes to the AF sensor, the more contrast, therefore less hunting. 50mm lenses for bellows use.
Hi all, I am looking at permanently attaching a 50 mm lens reverse mounted on my bellows - I usually use my FA50f1.4, but I'm starting to get annoyed with taking it apart and putting it back together again. The question I need answered is, as I'm going to dedicate a lens to the bellows, which one would be best for my needs? I generally shoot with the lens stopped down to f16 or f22 to get the greatest depth of field. My subjects are 3 dimensional, so a flat field of focus is not 100% necessary. My subjects also tend to hide from bright lights, so I can't use extra light to help me focus, and at full extension of the bellows and a 2 times converter between the camera and bellows (7 times magnification to the film), any extra light is a bonus. I'll probably end up with a K or M f1.4 or a K f1.2, but the closest I have come to an f1.2 is picking one up at a swap meet, so I have no idea of it's optical performance compared with an f1.4 (particularly reverse mounted on bellows for macro use). So my question to all you knowledgable people out there is: is a 50 mm f1.2 as sharp as an f1.4 when stopped down between f11 and f22, and is there anything you know about these lenses that I should know before I go out and try to buy one? Re: teleconverters and losing an f/stop: any benefit?
John, Thanks for your detailed reviews of TCs. When someone takes the time to share his test results in such detail, it spares list members like me from wasting money on turkeys. But my question about effective aperture remains unanswered. It's clear enough that by multiplying the focal length, you reduce depth of field. I'm asking this: Given that a 1.4X reduces depth of field, do you get some of it back because your lens's f/5.6 setting is now effectively f/8? John Mustarde [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You get less DOF when adding a TC, assuming the lens-with-TC and the same bare lens are both wide open and focused on a subject the same distance away. Frantisek, Neil is right. There is no separate flash compensation on the Z-1. Re: This List Should Have Warning Labels...
Now, I'm lusting after the 645, and have casually mentioned to my wife the possiblity of converting a section of the garage into a darkroom. I'm a dead man. Marc, Join the crowd, join the crowd. Actually, I guess you already have! gg Good for you in starting a darkroom. I have the studs for an elaborate little 7' x 9' darkroom all built downstairs in my basement--I'm putting up the subwall now and working on the ventilation system. I've been a bit distracted by digital, but just THINKING about digital too much just makes me miss conventional darkroom work too much. I used to be the Editor of _Photo Techniques_, previous called _Darkroom and Creative Camera Techniques_, which was, until I got my paws on it, the largest surviving darkroom magazine in the English-speaking world (now it's a general photographic magazine with a distinctly technical and scholarly slant--scholarly by magazine standards, at least). My friend Ctein (pronounced kuh-TINE), former Contributing Editor for _Darkroom Photography_ magazine, former Contributing Editor for the American _Camera Darkroom Photography_ magazine, former contributor to the English _Darkroom User_ magazine, current contributor Editor for the English _Camera Darkroom_ magazine, and current contributor to _Photo Techniques_, has a nice section on his website about building a temporary darkroom (I put that in quotes because his has been in continuous duty for 20+ years g). It might offer you some tips about how to convert part of your garage without doing any damage to the resale value of your house. Best, --Mike * * * Photography is simple. Re: New Enlarger Up and Running
Thanks Mike. Another question: Obviously a VCCE head is convenient. Is it superior to gel filters below the lens in terms of image quality? Paul, Yes, I think so. More to the point, it offers more control more easily. With infinitely variable contrast BETWEEN whole or half grades it's very easy to tweak contrast exactly. I've considered the possibility of putting gel filters behind the diffusion glass on my ancient Omega cold light head. It's accessible. Would this be better than gels below the lens? Yes. Any way to put the filters before the lens is preferable, unless it subjects the gels to too much heat. A cold light gets to around 100 degrees F which is usually no problem. I've been using gels below the lens ever since I went to cold light, but it bugs me. I figure why worry about lens resolution if you're going to put a cheap gel filter below it. It would bug me too. I'm not saying you'd find it easy to notice a big difference--or any visible difference--but just on the face of it it does seem evident that it's not the best solution. --Mike * * * Photography is simple. Re: Wide Angle Enlarging Lenses
I have used the 40mm f4 El-Nikkor for years when I need to make a 20x24 from a 35mm neg. on the baseboard on my Beseler 23C III. It does an excellent job -- grain is clear and crisp and there is minimal light falloff. Okay, I guess I'm wrong about wide-angle enlarging lenses. Actually I'm just parroting some advice that Arthur Kramer used to dispense on the old CompuServe. He had tested all manner of enlarging lenses and had found that NO wide-angle lens came up to the standard of the best of the lenses of the stand focal length for any format. Of course, Uncle Arthur's standards are the highest--he prints 35mm, for instance, with an 8x10 Durst (about a $10,000 enlarger) elaborately bolted to a concrete wall and equipped with a $2,400 Apo-El-Nikkor enlarging lens (serial number 007, if I remember correctly g). In any event, I'll cede the point to anybody like you, Bob, who has direct experience. While not giving up on my prejudices entirely either. g --Mike * * * Photography is simple. Re: SMCT 35/2
I finally nabbed a true new one. In a sealed carton, truly never used, it had all the wrappings and warranty card, everything that made it a brand new lens. I paid dearly for it, since another ebayer had cast longing eyes on it too. But, it was totally free of yellow cast. Sid, That's pretty amazing that true new ones are still out there. I am sincerely of the opinion these old SMCTs, easily available, many in mint condition, albeit some with yellow casts from aging, are works of art, a beauty of Japanese engineering, and quite capable of producing works of art, despite their not having aspherical elements, LD glass or any of the newer innovations of modern manufacturing. I heartily second that. I know in my head that the later 50/1.4's are probably as good as most S.M.C.-Takumar's, but the wonderful construction of that lens just gets to me. As JCO says, a good one has got the smoothest focusing action of ANY lens, Zeiss or Leica included. It's just a beautifully made object. It's also a verifiable fact that manufacturers over the years have concentrated their considerable efforts on taking cost OUT of certain products as a way of putting value in. And while in many cases their skill and attention results in products that may perform as well, still, there is something really satisfying about a product that is unapologetically deluxe. Certainly that applies to the 35/2 and 50/1.4 Super Takumars and Super-Multi-Coated Takumars. --Mike * * * You never know when the shot of a lifetime will appear before you. My grandson and I were looking at Jupiter through my reflecting telescope (8 diameter aperture, 1200 mm focal length, f/6, magnification 144 X) at about 9:30 PM EST Saturday night from our suburban location upstate. Glorious view, by the way. I don't recall seeing anything in the location you describe, but there are a couple of 3rd-magnitude stars belonging to the constellation Gemini at about the 8 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions using your coordinates, and a 4th-magnitude star (also in Gemini) at about the 4 o'clock position. This 4th-magnitude star would have been about as far away from Jupiter as Jupiter is from the Moon. One of Jupiter's authentic moons, Callisto, would have been about two-tenths of a degree away from Jupiter at the time you describe, in the direction toward our Moon. However, Callisto is about 7 magnitudes -- or 610 times -- less bright than Jupiter. With the large magnitude difference, the small separation, and the glare from the full Moon, you wouldn't have seen this satellite of Jupiter with the naked eye. However, you ~can~ see these moons of Jupiter in a pair of well-steadied 10 x 50 binoculars. Perhaps what you saw was either a background star (or perhaps a reflection from your eyeglasses?). Saturn, by the way, currently rises about two hours before Jupiter. My grandson and I looked at Saturn through the telescope as well -- also a glorious site. Trace a line in the sky from our Moon through Jupiter and across the sky toward the western horizon. Saturn is about 30 degrees to the west of Jupiter along this line. (Your clenched fist held at arm's length subtends about ten degrees of sky from thumb to little finger, so Saturn is three fist widths from Jupiter.) Saturn is currently about 4 degrees above the star, Aldebaran -- a bright reddish orange star in the constellation Taurus. This pair stands out pretty well in my suburban evening sky. You'll probably need a telescope to see Saturn's rings, but even an inexpensive refractor at low power (60 or 70 X) will give a pretty view. Well, more than you probably wanted to know, but hope this helps. Good seeing! Bill Peifer Rochester, NY - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: MZ-S Questions
Hi Jason, I can answer a few of your points. Point 1. Overriding the A from the lens, means going into M (manual) or Tv (shutter priority)and is done using the dial on the body. the green button on the front of the body will bring you back to Program. There is no way to get aperture priority from the body (answering also point 3) Not sure about the max F number, could be your lens not giving correct info to the body. I vaguely remember a similar discussion on the list but not suresurely a list member will give an answer . Bellows, I guess a Pentax/3rd party kmount bellows are available 2nd hand, but not sure you'll find ones (if they were ever made) maintaing any program features... to double check you could check out: http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/index.html 4. Re: Too Short Pentax Cable Switch F (Survey)
Too short most of the time, so I spliced 10m of rotor control cable into it and made a really long cable. I was spoiled with the IR shutter release my Rollei PS had, which really worked out great for group pix. Unfortunately, the ZX-M has no such provision, and I really hate having to set the little timer, run back to the group, go back to the camera, back to the group, et cetera, also known as group picture aerobics. For tripod work, I simply coil up the extra cable and secure it with a Velcro strap under the tripod. t On 1/27/02 12:04 PM, Ryan Charron wrote: Hello To All, Does anyone out there fell 3.3 feet long is way too short? Re[2]: MZ-S Questions
Jason, I'll take a stab at some of your questions - 1) Based on your description, it doesn't sound like the lens is really set to automatic. There should actually be an 'A' setting on the lens. I can believe some older 3rd party lenses might not have an 'A' setting, but I would be surprised to hear of a Pentax 'A' lens not having an 'A' setting. Can you give us more details on which lenses those are - they sound more like 'M' or 'K' series lenses. As to the Tamron - is is an Adaptall lens? Also, do you have any other Pentax bodies that feature program mode that do allow program mode with these lenses? Again, I would think that no Pentax body functions as you describe. More input please. 2) I have the Pentax Auto Bellows A and I can report that the MZ-S does not mate to it. The base of the camera (no BG-10) hits into the frame of the bellows and won't allow a solid mating. I don't know if there are any 3rd party bellows that would work. 3) No there is no way to control the F stop from the body. Only the aperture ring. 4) Can't help you on this one. 5) I'm not sure what 2P synch is. To use high-speed synch on the AF360FGZ you have to set the camera to high speed synch and set the flash to high speed synch. Sorry, that is all I can tell you. Bruce Dayton Monday, January 28, 2002, 8:07:59 AM, you wrote: VJ ...one more question VJ Is there a preferred shutter speed when using the 2P sync? Re: Q: LX checkup
Matti, Take the motor drive off the body. There are two holes in the body where the motor drives the film winding. Make sure the motordrive has the two plugs for the body securely stored into the screw in slots on the top of the motordrive. Of course, you will NOT fire the camera for the first time until you can check/see the mirror moving when you do. It sounds like no sticky mirror, but good to check it yourself after the camera has sat for a while. Regards, Bob S. Re: 50mm lenses for bellows use.
Hi Leon, IIRC, the instruction booklet for my bellows advises against anything faster than f1.7, though it doesn't give a reason. A cheap A 50/2 works just fine on mine, but I haven't added a teleconverter to it so I couldn't guess whether it would be bright enough to focus. Dan Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi all, I am looking at permanently attaching a 50 mm lens reverse mounted on my bellows - I usually use my FA50f1.4, but I'm starting to get annoyed with taking it apart and putting it back together again. Re: Price for Fixing Sticky Mirror or CLA
Just fixing a sticky mirror is one thing. CLA on an LX is another. I would expect that if the infamous sticky mirror problem exists, than it's time for other things as well. There are seals on the LX that don't last forever. By the time sticky mirror shows up, it may be prudent to have these replaced as well. This is no small job and the seals are not free. Further, just checking (let alone adjusting) all the things that need checking on an LX is somewhat time consuming. I can't imagine that $40 can buy more than an hour's work and probably less. This would be entirely insufficient to CLA an LX. Three hours with a knowledgeable and practiced tech with all the appropriate special tools would be about right, I would think this should be about $150 or there about. Just my guess from having watched a thorough job done. Regards, Bob... Re: Q: LX checkup
Depending on the condition, I would consider this a more than acceptable amount. In my case I would fire all of the shutter speeds manually to see if they seem to be at least close then expose a role of slide film using the camera under various lighting conditions, (If you have the time to get it developed to check for meter accuracy). Try a flash, preferably a dedicated unit to make sure that all flash functions work correctly. Make sure that the Motor's batteries will hold a charge, You don't mention if you're getting a charger unit, make sure you do. Service for sticky mirror is a good point you shouldn't have to worry about that. These cameras generally fetch $500 - $600 or so on E-Bay in close to mint condition. A NiCd pack is about $150 - $200 and the Motor $300+, looks like you've got a good deal. According to the seller, the body is cosmetically near mint, but has been serviced for the sticky mirror. Should this be a major concern? Re: Which ringlight, AF-080C or AF-140C?
- Original Message - From: Frantisek Vlcek [EMAIL PROTECTED] How can that be? AF500 FTZ's guide number is lower than 400-T's guide number, no? The 500 number is inflated for zooming out to 85 (Gosh, is Metz the only manufacturer who doesn't lie about their flashes guide number? Or only a little bit? GN is measured for 35mm lens coverage, that's a standard. It was always so g), while the 400 has the 40 GN at 28mm or 35mm coverage, no? Frantisek, According to the manuals you are absolutely right: At ISO 100, with 28mm zoom: AF400T: GN = 40 AF500FTZ: GN = 32 But this just means that both of them are more than powerful enough to illuminate subjects that are, say, 50cm from the lens. When I tested them side by side last summer, I used the 500 at 24mm zoom, and it still burned out the highlights more than did the 400T. Most of the subjects were shot at 1:1 with the Z-1 and a FA100/2.8 macro, with TTL and aperture priority at 1/250 second exposure. There must be something other than GN that cause the 400T to give more correct exposures. I'm not sure what it is... Jostein - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re[2]: Price for Fixing Sticky Mirror or CLA
Tom, I, too, believe that it is hardly worth it. There are three possible reasons that come to mind. Each may be of different worth to an individual. 1) sentimental reasons, 2) feel/handling of older mechanical bodies, 3) need for no autowinder found on all newer bodies. Certainly the money spent can easily exceed the value of the camera. It seems that about the only exception is the LX. Even parts are getting scarce for many of the bodies. When that happens to the LX, it, too may not be worth attempting to fix. Re: Help: LX-numbers again
Hi Peter, According to what I've learned from Pentax/Scandinavia - - the first number is for the factory that built the LX - - the second is for the year is was built (0 = 1990,1 = 1991, 2 = 1992 etc) They started with this type of numbers in 1990. Before that batchnumbers were put on some more interior part of the cameras. Any hints as to exact location - or are they really interior, like buried unless a complete stripdown happens? - - the third position is for the month it was built (1,2,3,.. 0,x,y,z) - - the forth number is the week - - the last two have something to do with type variations. The pentax people were not very clear about that. Does that make sense? Perfect sense. My problem is that I've just loaded up again with some Fuji Cheapandchearia again and forgot to look! I think I might just rewind into the can and have a peek... Hi Leon, I am sorry I can't help you much with your specific questions, but perhaps you will find my post helpful anyway :) 1) the 2x TC - this is more a question. Wouldn't it be better directly beyond the lens? It's usually the recommended situation. 2) You do 7:1 magnification, right? At such large magnification, I think any small coverage fast lens would cover easily the entire 24x36mm negative! Have you considered an old movie lens, lf shorter focal length? You would get greater DOF too, although with a different angle of view. The C mount lenses for 16mm movie cameras could be useful for this, and can be really cheap as well as plenty fast. Re: This List Should Have Warning Labels...
Hi, Marc, I'm in the same boat. Started posting about a year ago, more or less. Had some Spotmatic bodies, and some m42 lenses. Just in the last coupla weeks, got an MX, MV, M-series 2.0 50mm. Now I gotta start looking for lenses for my k-mounts! And all my Yashica Mat is doing is making me lust for a 67 (or a 645, if the price is right). Does it ever end? Damn, damn, damn... A week or two after joining the list, I took the plunge and bought a PZ-1p with a handy-dandy 28-70 f/4 zoom, and have been obsessing mightily. Now, I'm lusting after the 645, and have casually mentioned to my wife the possiblity of converting a section of the garage into a darkroom. I'm a dead man. Re: Price for Fixing Sticky Mirror or CLA
Hi, Tom, My situation is a bit different than yours, but you might recall that I posted extensively on the weekend about an MX that I recently acquired whose mirror hangs up occasionally. I brought it in to the local repair shop (Kominek's in Toronto). He seemed to think that a CLA would do the trick, but he'll look at the mirror mechanism specifically while he's in there. CLA at Komineks on an MX will be $150 Canadian, which as you all know is probably a bit less than $100US. It's worth it for me, not for sentimental reasons - I intend on using the camera extensively. But, here in Toronto, it seems that MX's (when you can find them!) go for anywhere from $350 to $400Cdn. The repair shop has a waiting list for used MX's, and he said that if he were selling the one that I brought in, he'd ask $400 (after the CLA). I was at Henry's on Saturday, and they have two of them, one for $369, and another for $400 (a black one). How relevent any of this is to your situation, I don't know... regards, frank aimcompute wrote: Thanks Bob, I appreciate the feedback. At the f/stop you are choosing, you will be entirely diffraction limited. Pentax 28mm/2.8
There are some mixed comments recently about the performance of the Pentax SMC-M 28mm f/2.8. http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/ site indicates that there are two versions of the SMC-M 28mm f/2.8. I wonder if those who are disappointed have one version and those who are satisfied have the other version. It also seems that the version 2 referred at the website might have the same optical formula as the A and the F 28mm lens. Re: 50mm lenses for bellows use.
You can get a f1.7 or f2.0 M pentax lens for less that $20.00 US if the point is to permanently mount a 50mm reversed on the bellows I would make the minimal investment in either of those. I think that in general the 1.7 has a flatter field of view. Unlike earlier bargain lenses such as the 55mm 1.8/2.0 combination The 2.0 is a different optical design. I'd avoid either of the fast 50's and go with a 1.7 or 2. With the 1.2 and 1.4 you'll get out-of-focus corners which may be fine for some shots but a nasty surprise at other times. The slower lenses will work better for all subjects. For more, refer to the Macro question... thread from last week. BTW, I just wanted to compliment you on your Bek photo in this month's PUG. The composition was well done. t On 1/28/02 2:30 AM, Leon Altoff wrote: Hi all, I am looking at permanently attaching a 50 mm lens reverse mounted on my bellows - I usually use my FA50f1.4, but I'm starting to get annoyed with taking it apart and putting it back together again. Re: Vivitar Series 1 28-105, Sigma 35-85, vs. new Tokina 28-105
A really nice new lens on your budget would be the Tamron 28-105/4-5.6 or the Tokina 28-105. Both are terrific values for the money. The Tamron is nice and light and a really decent performer.generally around $150 or so new (I paid $158 for mine). The Tokina is heavier and a better build, and a bit closer to the $200 mark I think, but an excellent lens. Both of these are autofocus lens, ideal for the ZX-5n. I've heard nothing but bad things about the Sigma 28-105/2.8-4...not real sharp, poor contrast, not a very highly rated lens. The Vivitar has been rated both as generally pretty good, or generally pretty lousy..depends on whose review you look at! The FA28-70/4 is outstanding! It is a bit slow but if you go with the new 800 speed films, you just might be alright. A really good lens in the 28-70/2.8 category is a used Tokina, but these are probably a bit over your budget...they seem to list and sell for around $235 or so in good condition. Budget is a consideration, around $150 new or used. I was looking at used lenses and saw two that looked interesting: the Vivitar series 1 28-105 f2.8-3.8 and Sigma 35-85 f2.8-4. Can someone tell me a little more about these lenses? Are they autofocus, or at least auto-aperature? I've read that the Vivitar is a varifocal design. Is this true of the Sigma as well? Is varifocal a pain or an improvement in image quality? Somewhere I read that the Vivitar has a minimum focus distance of almost 5 feet. That's a little too far out there. Does anyone know or can guess as to the minimun focus of the Sigma? I can't find any specs on it. As far as new lenses go, I was looking at the Sigma 28-105 f2.8-4 and maybe the Tokina 28-70 f3.5-4.5 or 28-105 in the same focal length. The Tokina isn't very fast, but I've been wondering about it, too. Some think very highly of Tokina lenses and I'd like to know how they stack up against the others. I know someone will recommend the Pentax 28-70 f4; however, I think it will be a bit too slow. I would like to shoot in existing light in concert halls and do some night photography around town.
