Re: Exclusive picture of "new" Pentax D-SLR

2002-10-25 Thread Brad Dobo
I have a different view here. When I went shopping for my digital P&S, I
had the money and choices of Optios to choose. I did the wise thing and
thought of my needs and it's usage. That lead me to the 230 2mp. 6mp
cameras were out there already, but I chose mine to suit my needs. So with
a new Pentax DSLR, some of you will find it suits your needs just fine and
will buy it. Some won't like it and won't buy it. Others will buy it no
matter what! My choice was excellent, saved money, and I have no near
future plans to look at the digital market. In 5 years, ask me again, I may
change that.

Another laggard reply:

I have:
*ME [black]
*ME-Super
*Spotmatic

*Kiev rf
*Leica Z2X

*LX
*LX
LX
MZ-S

*Yashicamat
*Pentax 645
Pentax 645

I may be missing one or two...
The * indicates the ones I would sell or trade. So I have 12 cameras, of
which I would hold onto one LX, one 645, and the MZ-S. I am seriously
thinking of the new Pentax digital (430) as the camera to fill the P&S
ecological niche once occupied by my several Minoxen, then by the Leica Z2X
(until my wife dropped it in a stream and rendered the electronic components

2002-10-25 Thread Brad Dobo
Hey Glen,

Well, it was a question I have always wanted to ask, yet never did. I did
this for curiosity sake. I own the MHZ-5n and the MZ-S, and have the
AF330FTZ and the AF360FGZ flashes. I really am not in the market for one
now, but like I said I was curious, because when I started photography, I
used a borrowed A3000 and a small flash unit. The flash unit was broken on
the base, so would not sit properly. I bought a half-decent Vivitar flash,
but cannot remember the model. So my primary interest was if anyone fried
their cameras circuits using another brand flash, since I keep getting told
to never use anything but your cameras brand.

True.

Also true.

Btw, although I do not have one, I think the Tamron 90/2.8 macro has lovely

Sigma and Tokina's macro's do not have particularly nice bokeh from what
I've seen.

The Tamron 90 is a highly regarded lens by the Japanese.

RE: Fw: Trading LX's

2002-10-25 Thread Alan Chan
But in my case, parts were not the problem. My MX jammed and they charged me
AUD180 for it. That guy rapid fire my MX when I picked it up and it was ok.
When I walked out of the door, it jammed again. The 2nd time I was back for
the same reason, he said I must did something to it and gave me a rather
unfriendly look (was he ever?). Twice he spent less than 5mins to free the
jammed mechanism. So, 5mins x 3 = AU180? The case was gone unsolved. Very
unhappy.

Another incidence was he stripped down mt MDA and didn't assemble it
properly. The MDA was left there for many days and he did nothing until I
had to visit them again. Parts were missing and wires were not soldered
properly. I had to go upstairs and purchased the parts myself. And by the
time I was waiting for him to assemble the MDA, he spent most of his time
chating with his fellow and kept me waiting.

Perhaps it was just me, but that old fellow was never been friendly or
willing to help me out as I could see. A waste of time as far as I
concerned. If I were still living in Australia, my Pentax might be sold long
ago. My Nikon equipments were much better supported there.

regards,
Alan Chan

Jeez Alan, I think we've all been down this little road before too. C.R
Kennedy's are excellent as far as I am concerned, and I have never had
reason to complain. I also have had cameras they could not fix, but that
was
because parts were no longer available. They are only an agent, not the
manufacturer. A couple of the service technicians at CRK were shipped off
to
Japan many moons ago to learn how to do LX's properly, so that is why I am
happy to recommend them. I think you will find others (i.e. Rob Studdert)
equally happy to recommend CRK for what I originally commented on.

Well, you have chosen the two weakest lenses in the 6x7 lineup.
The 75mm Tak is sharp enough, and fairly contrasty. but has some
real flare problems. Use it with caution in situations where
flare may be a problem.
The 200 is just not an exciting lens. It isn't especially sharp,
nor does it have great contrast or bokeh. It isn't a bad lens,
it just isn't a really good lens.
I have done some very nice portraiture with the 200mm f/4 Tak
though.
I've never used the 150mm, but I have the 165mm f/4 and it is
exceptional.
I have heard that the newer SMC Pentax versions of both these
optics are vast improvements over the Takumars.

Shaun,

My experience is only a couple of weeks at a time in the tropics (jungle)
visiting family or working at an archaeology site.

I always cart the LXen with me. The only problem I have ever had was
humidity getting to the hotshoe. It would work well inside (no air
conditioning) but was intermittent outside. And it was just one LX that did
that.

The LX never hiccuped. And this includes shooting in the rain, which I have
done again and again since then. I like the LX since it can work
mechanically at most speeds.

I also live close to the water. Anything left outside will get rusty or
show the effects of moisture. I do not store my lenses in any special cases
or in an air conditioned environment.

Just a little note. I don´t know if any of this will help you. I would not
go out of my way to take measures to keep everything in a dry environment.

Just my thoughts,

RE: Re[2]: Film to check a lens

2002-10-25 Thread Rubenstein, Bruce M (Bruce)
This is why I said slide film. You used print film, and it sounds like you looked at
prints, which can lead to all sorts of problems. The point of using slide film is to
look at the film itself, and I find that easier with slides. The biggest problem is
getting viewing the film with high enough magnification do draw good conclusions. Once
I started using a 30x, stereo microscope it became much easier to see what a lens
could do.

Re: PDML UK Camden Lock - pictures up

2002-10-25 Thread frank theriault
Hey, Stan,

Save yourself the trouble of going through all 2000+ posts. Here's a synopsis:

Issue #1:

Someone said: "I bet the Pentax people read this list sometimes"
Brad said: "Hey Pentax, where's our (insert bad word) DSLR!
Someone else said: "Hey Brad, don't swear!"
Brad said" "I'm sorry."
A different someone else said: "Hey Brad, I'm offended by your swearing."
Brad said: "I already said I'm sorry."
Another person said: "Brad, you shouldn't swear."

A week long flame war breaks out, that even went as far as someone setting up a
new e-mail account under Brad's name, attributing posts to him that weren't
his. The whole thing was unseemly in the extreme...

Issue #2:

Chaso: "There's this exhibit in Texas by a guy using Medium Format, and he used
Photoshop to clean up his images"

Wheatfield: "Photoshop is a cheap and dirty way of cleaning up what should have
been done properly by the photographer behind the viewfinder in the first
place."

Instantly the thread breaks into 35 OT threads about such things as Photoshop
vs. dodge and burn, negatives are real and digital isn't, admissability of negs
versus digital in a court of law, some sort of phenomenological versus
post-modernist "can we really trust our senses and how can we observe the world
without that very observation changing what we observe?" discussion, when and
what kind of violence can we jokingly refer to without offending some, etc.
etc. Oh yeah, and Norm Baugher said, "I think my fridge light stays on when I
close the door".

Please note that I'm paraphrasing liberally (despite the quotation marks), and,
I my tongue is planted firmly in my cheek right now, so ~please~ no one be
offended - this is an attempt at humour (gotta cover all the bases with this
post ).

So Stan, delete all those messages, and get some sleep. Sounds like you need
it. Glad you had a good trip!

regards,
frank

I wouldn't want to be limited to a slow 28 in my travel kit either. I
invariably take my 28/2 or 31/1.8 and I'll use both wide open without
hesitation. I generally would have a lens longer than 135mm in my normal travel
kit unless I was targetting specific subject matter.

Pretentious nonsense. For the majority of situations, these lenses are
fast enough. Most of us can't afford ultra-fast glass. In any case, how
often does one shoot in extremely low light with a 200? And the SMC
200/4 is an excellent lens. When shooting with the 28, a shutter speed
of 1/15 or 1/30 is quite manageable. And that's easy to achieve at 3.5
with most films and lighting conditions. No, they're not premium lenses,
but they'll take fine pictures. Hell, I've even shot in the dead of
night with my M 200/4. See

They're not as fast as the big money, big glass. But they're not "too slow."

One of the William's and Dick Graham both suggested

My question now is has anyone used it w/ a wide angle

645 focussing screens

2002-10-25 Thread tom
I'm considering installing a AG-80 AF Cross-Lined Matte screen in my
645n. This is the one with the grid.

- Has anyone changed a screen in a 645n? How hard is it?
- Am I going to freak out? I've used standard screens all my
photographic life.
- I'm considering it because I'd like to frame panoramic images (I
played with an Xpan today). Does this sound reasonable?

The manual also lists a AF Sprit-Image Matte screen. I'm assuming they
mean Split-Image.

Thanks.

BTW, one small correction: you said 645NII. I wish! I have a basic 645.
As for the hayseed comment, I have slung (slang? have slanged? I am not
actually sure of the past participle of 'sling') many a hay bale in my

You are correct, I happened to visit Future Shop an hour ago and was looking at

The HP ScanJet 3570C (USB)(35mm) was on sale @ $229.99,
Epson Perfection 1660 (USB)(35mm/MF) @ $289.99.
They also had a special on the HP ScanJet 4470 USB/Par (Open Box) @ $119.96.

Are these any good? Considering I will mostly scan my negs or slides initially

Teleconverters for 645?

2002-10-25 Thread gfen

I see Pentax produced two TCs, the 1.4x Rear Converter A and the 2x Rear
Converter A.

I've never really researched TCs, so these are also somewhat confusing to
me, but am I to assume from reading the Pentax website the 1.4 is only
good on the 120/4, 200/4, and 300 due to teh fact that it has an element
that sticks out, and that I would need to use the 2x converter on any
other lens?

My original concept was to form a kit of teh 45/2.8, 75/2.8, and 150/3.5
and then use the 1.4x TC as a fill to flesh out the kit with minimal
equipment, but it looks like that's nto going to happen. Is there an
aftermarket, and reasonably priced, 1.4x TC for the 645?

Nothing to speak of. Back when I was around 14, before I bought my

Re[2]: law and image

2002-10-25 Thread Bob Walkden
Hi,

I have some personal experience similar to this from a civilian's
standpoint. In my other life as an IT person I was at one time in
charge of the financial systems at a company I worked for here in
England. One of the employees was prosecuted for stealing large
amounts of cash. Computer-based accounts were used as evidence, and
had to be accompanied by a signed statement that they accurately reflected
the state of the business at the time indicated. There is quite a good
analogy here between computerised accounts and Bob Cratchet-style
ledger books, and digital photos and film.

Incidentally, we had quite a long discussion here on this subject some
months ago. The recent thread on whether or not to have a FAQ could
profitably be extended to include a FAC - Frequently-Argued Crap. We
could then adopt a UK parliamtary practice, and write 'I refer the
honourable member to our previous correspondence on this subject'. It
would have saved me some time dealing with the 505 messages that were
awaiting me after a mere 2 days absence from the list.

There's some great work in there. I would love to see some of those

How are you liking your 67? I find the deliberate nature of shooting

Re: Travel Kit

2002-10-25 Thread Bob Walkden
Hi,

speaking for myself, I would not bother with the zoom. The primes
other than the 50 are too slow, although the focal lengths are good. I
would also have a non-macro 100mm or 85mm as well as, or instead of,
the macro because macro lenses take a long time to turn through the
full focus range.

It's quite serviceable. My sample of the A50/2 gives more of a "plastic

nice an M series). Optically, I think A 50mm series, /2, /1.7, /1.4, is

Ain't got no formal education, boy. Yer lucky I'm
literate. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to start no
flame wars over Med Format Exhibit in Texas.

Actually, I took art classes (nonphotographic) for
three years in high school. That really wasn't that
long ago. My sister did the photo classes, and I'm
telling you, some of her stuff was really good.
Photography for me began in earnest at my newspaper
job. I did all the arts events and since these were
at night, I was usually the only staff person there.
So I got the camera.

Brad,

What a humble approach on your part! Personally studying a lot of books on
various photographic styles, techniques, and equipment has helped a lot.
Working with experienced professionals. Becoming a member of a camera club
and PPA. And I am just beginning a correspondence course with the New York
Institute of Photography www.nyip.com. Most of all take a lot of pictures
and write down exposure, film, conditions, filters used, and any other
information that describes what might be recorded on the film. Then sit down
with your exposures and your notes and analyze your own work. Ask others
with more experience to look them over too. Slide film is so unforgiving
that I often use it when experimenting to learn.

P.S. By the way ... we're all beginners. There is so much to learn .

I hear you. 6 months ago I was developing *and* proofing all my b+w
for weddings. I had 8 weddings this month, and realized if I tried to
do it all myself I'd have a heart attack.

I switched to T400CN, and only shoot a couple of rolls of Neopan 1600

Good luck.

Canon. I found a used Kodak DCS 520 (aka Canon D2000). A stringer that works
for me has been kind enough to let me use his d60 a couple of times in the
last month or so. And I'm totally hooked. My strong point (as far as
photography is concerned) is really sports, and you really can't beat
Canon's AF. Pentax's AF is good, but I was shooting some tennis and
volleyball last Tuesday and got some shots that I'm convinced would've been
impossible with a Pentax. And working for a daily paper I really need
digital, I can't spend four or more hours after a late night football game
working film, it's killing me. I'm still keeping my k1000 and a 28, 50, and
135 for when I want to have fun shooting and have time to deal with film, so
I'll prolly still be around here awhile. :)

You have to look at the film to really see what is going on. I find
it easier to examine slides than negatives. I think just about any
100 speed, or slower, slide film is fine. Just make sure you use a
tripod and good technique. The most difference between the lenses
will be at wide apertures. So do most of your shooting there, and
focus carefully.

I recently sold an A50/2, however, I was very happy with it, and sort of
regret selling it.. It was quite sharp, but also small and light
especially when in direct comparision to my A50/1.4.

Re[3]: Quality film scanner at an acceptable price?

2002-10-25 Thread Bruce Dayton
Ken,

You must be confused. The scanners in question (Epson 2450 &
replacement) actually scan film. They have a built in light source in
the lid and holders for the negatives/chromes. The drivers and
scanning software deal with what type of source material you are using
(paper, negative, transparency). The nice thing about them is they
can scan up to a 4X5 piece of film. They don't have the resolution or
dmax of a nikon 8000, but they don't have a price tag of that either.
The only choice for MF shooters is this at about 200-300 USD or a film
scanner at about 2000-3000 USD. That is 10 times the price. I have
tried two units. The first I was not satisfied with it's sharpness. I
returned it. Later, reading on the web indicated that some of the
earlier units had a QC issue where the focus point was not consistent
and you could get less sharp scans (that's what I found). They seemed
to have fixed that, so I ordered another and have been happy with it.

My suggestion to Paal is to buy one from a place that he can return
it, if he finds that it doesn't meet his needs. The alternative is
very expensive.

HTH,

Bruce

Dave,

Keep in mind that negative film won't show any colour casts if you're
worried about that (it shouldn't be an issue). Slide film is generally
a bit cheaper to buy and process, but you can't get it in 12 frame
rolls.

Brad,
I wish I had done like you, and start out with a photo course.
Being self-taught all the way (except for lots of valuable advice from the
PDML), I feel that everything takes so much time to learn. Maybe I'm being
less than average systematic about it, but I think I would have done better
with a course or two in the first place.

That said, it's definately more of a satisfaction to figure things out on my
own than to have it served. I guess it's about _seeking_ information
actively instead of being "fed" in a course or classroom situation.

Dave;

Whenever I want to test a new body or lens I run a roll of Fuji Provia 100F.
By it's nature it is a sharp, contrast, fine-grained (some would say
grainless...) film which makes it ideal for this sort of test. I'll shoot
two or three frames per f-stop/shutter-spped combination in bright natural
light of a detailed static subject (large gauge model trains are my
favorite), get it developed and look at the slides on a light table with an
8x loupe.

BTW which 50/2 are you considering the M or A? I have 2 A's but cannot speak

Not good news if your trying to obtain optimum scan quality for medium

I'm using a Hotmail account and seem to be having no problems. You just
have to be sure to go into Hotmail's Options and enter "pentax-discuss" into
the mailing lists box.

Hi,

I'm back subscribed, if any one actualy cares:) and looking through the
emails i'm glad i missed a lot of it!

I've got a new email i'm using for the pdml now, as my old ones were
getting spammed to much and the pdml doesn't like hotmail accounts.

I'll also be updating both the pdml sites i maintain in the next week or
so, so for everyone who's sent me pictures, URLs or notifications of errors
will have to wait a little longer.

Regards,
Paul

Sure. We went to New York last weekend and she shot three rolls of Superia.
I'll scan some tonight and post them somewhere on my site.
