I have few... Buy *istD, *istFilm or its next generation, Sigma 70-200 f2.8, Tokina 28-80 f2.8. At present, I spend too much editing the film scans. Hi Frank, I made one to join the PDML and now I've done it (scary isn't it). Thanks to everyone for the great welcome and yes Tan I like to think that I have a pretty good sense of humor. With some of the mistakes we all make it pays to be able to laugh at oneself. I'm looking forward to the PDML Worldwide Rendezvous (as Frank called it) at Grandfather Mtn. with everyone that can make it. Thanks again for the welcomes, Charles

I'm going to archive and scan all the stacks of photos that are lying around - and try to stay on top of that this year. I also want to try to visit some places I've been meaning to visit, partly so I can shoot them. And I want to obtain a decent macro lens and a new tripod this year.

Yes ... I have resolved to put together a portfolio of some essays made a few decades ago. These were never completed because I moved from my studio and didn't have a good situation to continue with darkroom work. Also, I want to photograph more in the rain and at night. In fact, I really like the composition, my main "thoughts" behind the cropping possibility was due to the out of focus part of the anemone to the left. BUT, in hindsight, I tend to agree with you, and the crop as it is gives true scale to the shot, depicting just how small the clown fish truly is in relation to his chosen "home". Either way, I love the shot. You know what, I have never been scuba diving, or even snorkelling for that matter. I have asthma and have never been able to go when the opportunity has presented itself to me... It is so funny that we get so complacent (sic?) with those regions that we come to know and never truly "explore" them. I have said to my hubby on a number of occasions that it is ironic that people travel from all over the world to visit what we literally have on our doorstep, and are yet to properly explore ourselves. tan.

Thanks, tan. I'm horribly jealous that you are a four-hour drive to the reef! (I'm sure there are other travel considerations to make, like a boat etc, but it's an easy weekend trip). I was lucky enough to get away for a three-day trip when I was visiting my wife's relies last October. As far as the focus and composition goes, I've learned how to use the Optio 330 underwater and my buoyancy control was the best it's ever been. I must admit that I did tweak the colors in PS because of the loss of red light at depth. I didn't go overboard and I compared the colors to other photos of the same type of fish. I tried numerous versions of cropping the shot and really liked this one the most. The relationship between fish and anemone is very special and I wanted to convey that in the picture. Thanks again! Re: AP liked the *ist 35mm best
ERN asked: "Who wears a skirt when taking photographs??" Actually, you know what, I should have said that I was 'figuratively' speaking when I typed that cause, guess what? I NEVER wear a skirt when I am shooting - and especially not weddings. Last week I had 3 guys hoist me and my tripod up onto the roof of a Golf Club to take a large group shot of all the guests - can you imagine that if I'd been wearing... NOT a pretty sight would that have been... *eek*! And it would be even less wise to wear one when shooting kids, as I almost always end up sitting or lying down with them and shooting at ground level, or at least sitting and playing with them for a bit to capture candid shots... I'll try and dig up a shot of me that I know I have *somewhere* of me dressed in my "uniform"... tan.
For Sale - 2004 January 1
I have an SMC Pentax-M 50mm 1:1.4 for sale. If anyone on the PDML is interested, you get first shot, otherwise I'll eBay it. This lens is in what I would describe as unusually good condition. You can tell it's not straight out of the box by some wear marks on the lens mount and a couple of small flecks of dust on the inside of the front element that do not affect image quality. Gauging it by what I've seen from B&H, I'd rate it about an 8+ or a 9. Interested persons may email and we can work out a price. I generally sell a bit to the cheap side of fair, except I haven't seen any place on the Web that has this lens right now so don't really know what "fair" is. Me? I think today's photographers are crippled. The problem with the new cameras is you have to carry them around. If they were truely automatic, you could just tell them what kind of shots you wanted and they would go out and get them for you. I still say real photographers use the Speed Graphic. Re[2]: AP liked the *ist 35mm best
Hello Pieter, We were talking about the FILM *IST - not the DIGITAL *IST D. The film *ist is a very inexpensive camera targeted more at first time users who are going to buy the FAJ zooms. My point was, that the people who complain about the lack of support of older lenses (people who have the lenses, not a first time buyer who stumbles onto one) are not rushing out to buy an entry level SLR - they are using the previously mentioned bodies. The *ist D (digital) issue in regards to lens mount is a different story. -- Best regards, Bruce Thursday, January 1, 2004, 12:58:52 PM, you wrote: PN> On Thu, Jan 01, 2004 at 12:32:53PM -0800, Bruce Dayton wrote: >> I don't think that it is targeted at all those who still have pre 'A' >> lenses. But now I'm questioning if that is true. 6MP will do a perfectly adequate 11x14 inch print with no tribble at all. Thats about as big as you really need to go for most wedding work, and it's quite possible to go larger with interpolation. 6x7 won't go much bigger than that anyway, really, not much more than 16x20. The fine detail isn't resolved as well as larger film sizes, but this doesn't mean the images aren't sharp. Most wedding photographers big prints have been shot through some sort of softening filter anyway. > > I don't know that 6 megapixel *ist D pictures aren't sharp. I don't think that it is targeted at all those who still have pre 'A' lenses. Those people generally like the LX, MX, SuperProgram era bodies as well as the lenses. They might be enticed by the MZ-S (much more the same style in handling and feel), but certainly not enough of them would go for an *ist to make a reasonable business case. -- Best regards, Bruce Thursday, January 1, 2004, 9:59:06 AM, you wrote: >> >> On Wed, 31 Dec 2003, Mark Roberts wrote: >> >> > Pity it's (like all film cameras) being overshadowed by things digital. >> >> Pity, also, that it's a cripple mount. Re: AP liked the *ist 35mm best
> > You're right, John, > > We should call it a "differently-abled mount". Or maybe a "special mount". > > I'm starting to feel better about it already... Well, in all honesty, we don't know what the real story is. But, in any case, it's about time Pentax started using modern technology. It was twenty-five years ago that mechanical shutter timing was abandoned in favour of electronic timing (and, since the Super Program, there has not even been a mechanical fall-back speed). At the time the Super Program was introduced Pentax added the electronic contacts to read maximum aperture, rather than relying on the mechanical contact, and a predictable method of setting aperture from the body. This still relied on mechanical coupling, so had a certain level of imprecision (1/2 to 1/3 stop, according to folks on the list), but at least it fixed the one-stop indeterminacy that the variable-aperture zooms gave us. I believe the FA lenses also incorporate aperture-sensing encoders on the inner mechanism, so it is possible for such a lens to accurately report aperture setting over the digital communication pin. I fully expect to see a future Pentax body that relies on some such capability to control aperture, rather than the mechanical method used today. (Whether such a body will work with "A" lenses is an interesting point). I see moving to the precision of electronic communication and control as a positive step, rather than relying on the mechanical techniques appropriate for twenty-five years ago, with all their inaccuracies. What would an all-electronic mount look like? I think we've seen it. So which mount is "crippled"? The one that offers the capability of full- precison, error-free control, or the one that relies on mechanical aids?
Re[2]: No grain as a digital advantage?
One other thing to consider is "good enough" - for the client, that is. If the clients are happy with it, then all the other positive factors about digital come into the equation. I have moved from 67 to 6mp digital for my portrait and wedding work just very recently. Right now, from my experience, it seems that 67 has an edge in regards to detail - especially in landscapes, but when the subject is rather dominant - like people - the digi does just fine. Those who have seen my digital stuff so far have commented at least as favorably as my 67 stuff - usually slightly better. This is due to the spontinaety that I get from the smaller, faster camera and the generally closer focusing of the lenses that I use. So my advice would be that if you are shooting landscapes/scenics for fine art, that MF is still a better approach. If you are shooting people and events, the digital factors are well worth the difference in image quality (if it can even be seen). -- Best regards, Bruce Thursday, January 1, 2004, 9:27:16 AM, you wrote: WR> - Original Message - WR> From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> WR> ' WR> Subject: No grain as a digital advantage? >> Did I hear right in posts earlier this week? >> >> Did somebody suggest that digital was replacing medium format in Wedding >> photography because the results looked better -- smoother or whatever? >> >> A post by Bill Robb made me aware of different needs for sharpness in WR> Wedding >> Photos, for coming down the aisle snaps vs formal portraits. >> >> So does a 6 megapixel Pentax digital replace a 6x7 for the formal WR> portraits >> based on the lack of grain - textures & tonality, and the sharpness of the >> photos is not an issue? >> >> Regards, Bob S. William, I imagined the 6 megapixel image could not stand the amount of enlargement that an image from a 6x7 would and still remain sharp. I imagined that was why Wedding Photographers used big cameras on the formal portrait side, to get the required sharpness on enlargement. But now I'm questioning if that is true. Hi, Mark, Are you kidding? Do you know how much I had to pay her already for her time on New Years Day? Lawyers aren't cheap at the best of times! Anyway, I fired her a couple of minutes ago. The lawsuit's off. I'm just not up to it (plus I couldn't afford her retainer). Anyway, thanks for your thoughts on the photo. Just a fun thing, really. I'm not really happy with the focus on Claire's eye, but I don't know if that's my focusing, or the fact that her eye is coming through a $3 plastic lens (because as a wise sage once said, "If the lens screws up the light..." ). What I did find amusing is that by focusing on the magnified eye, everything at the plane of her face is out of focus, but the background about 3 or 4 feet behind her is more or less in focus. Like I said, just a fun shot. You take it, and you're not sure what's gonna happen! But I'm glad you enjoyed it. Happy New Years, frank "The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. frank never said any of those things. If he did (which is not hereby admitted, but specifically denied), they were taken out of context, and the meaning of the quotes attributed to him has been clearly distorted and/or negated by said lack of context. In the alternative, and without prejudice to the foregoing, if it is found by a properly constituted and statutorily empowered finder of fact that the quotes are accurate, and that they are either not taken out of context or that the lack of context does not affect the contents thereof, then frank states, and the fact is that the said utterances are copywrited intellectual property, and therefore subject to royalty fees, and that the unauthorized use thereof gives rise to punitive as well as other compensatory damages, including but not limited to pecuniary and non-pecuniary losses caused by such unauthorized usage. Re: Cotty and the MZ-S (response)
I can totally understand your thinking about not buying a new film camera now that the ist-d has come out. Given a choice, I would certainly buy the ist-d over the MZ-s right now. Both cameras are exceptional but you would really need a good reason to go out and pay full pop for an MZ-S. I picked up mine for a good price used otherwise I could not have justified it Vic The *ist D did. When William Robb said that he bought one within minutes of first picking it up, I can fully understand what he meant. I could feel it myself. If I hadn't migrated away from modern Pentax, I would have ordered one sight-unseen. It is a little gem. Maybe a bit too little - I am now used to monster cameras - the Canons tower over the diminutive *ist D. With my big hands, no bad thing. Far be it for me to be judge any gear without giving it a proper outing - it's quite unfair and you're right to pull me up on it. The MZ-S wouldn't be any good as a doorstop - it has no weight to it! ';-) Cheers, Cotty

Re: Solar filter (was Re: Multiple exposure shot over course of the year)
Herb Chong: did you make it yourself or is it designed for photographic use? It's originally a telescope accessory, designed for watching the sun. http://anders.hultman.nu/kamera/solfilter.jpeg Pieter Nagel: I think a 20 stop filter would be dangerous to use for solar photgraphy. It might block 20 stops of visible light, but let through enough other wavelengths to fry your eye through the viewfinder. Even if you can't see the sun at all. Yes, probably. Focused sunlight is a dangerous thing indeed. I have a friend who accidentally burned a hole in his camera shutter while setting up his gear for a sun shot. I once was given a piece of solar filter that looked just like very thin aluminium foil. It was a sheet of metal manufactured so thin that it became transparent enough for solar viewing. The image through this was noticably whiter than through another Mylar (?) filter, whose image was more muddy and yellow. The filter I have looks just like aluminium foil and it gives a blueish colour. Unfortunately, I do not remember the make. I suggest you ask at a place that sells telescopes. My filter is from such a place, but your tip is useful anyway: Thinking about it now, I might find a better filter by looking again. I was in quite a hurry when I bought it, since the eclipse I planned to shoot was imminent, and I had to settle for what they had in stock. anders - http://anders.hultman.nu/

No grain as a digital advantage?
Did I hear right in posts earlier this week? Did somebody suggest that digital was replacing medium format in Wedding photography because the results looked better -- smoother or whatever? A post by Bill Robb made me aware of different needs for sharpness in Wedding Photos, for coming down the aisle snaps vs formal portraits. So does a 6 megapixel Pentax digital replace a 6x7 for the formal portraits based on the lack of grain - textures & tonality, and the sharpness of the photos is not an issue? Regards, Bob S.
