Hi Shel 1 first download the REG file with a *right* mouse click on the link and save it with "save as" on your harddisk. Dont use your left mouse button here! 2 then *right* click with the mouse on that REG file and choose the first entry in the appearing menu to install it 3 regedit32 will ask, if you want to import that file into the windows registry, say yes 4 reboot Windows, and your drives should be there again, if not, search for new hardware in the control panel under Start --> Settings --> Control panel if that doesent work, ask a capable friend to remove the wrong "filter" entries manually in the windows registry with Start --> run --> regedt32 --> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BF C1-08002BE10318}] etc etc. tell him, to save the registry first! dont try the manual way yourself if your not a professional please. 5 remember, never install more than one CD burning program, that causes a lot of troubles, for ex. Nero and Adaptec Easy CD Creator or roxio WinonCD on the same windows installation. For further help you can also search www.roxio.com. greetings Markus Maurer How does the patch work? Re: Greater Vancouver Zoo
I concur with Shel wrt fence. It's a real distraction. I've taken a few zoopix over the years, and I realize that it's often either fence, or no pic. Looks like it was not such a good idea then. OTOH, that shot of the buzzards or whatever type of ugly bird they are, is pretty cool. And, yes, they're pretty damned sharp. Better than I coulda done, that's for sure. That one's my favourite of the bunch. Actually this pic was shot through the fence too, but the lens was stick so close to the fence they aren't visible in the picture. The ring-tailed lemurs (or whatever they are - any lower-primate-looking mammal with a ringed tail is a ring-tailed lemur to me) are sharp enough, but they really aren't doing much interesting imho. Not a bad shot, just not so interesting. But, as Shel said, if the exercise is one in handholding a long lens steady, you were most successful. I don't like these at all. The fence between the viewer and the animals really detracts from the critters. Better would have been to get closer, stick a smaller lens through the fence, if at all possible, or get much closer to the fence and use whatever lens you had wide open or close to it, obscuring the fence completely. Baring those options, these are probably as good as you could get, and was a good exercise in hand holding longer lenses ... which you seem to have done quite well. Others might like the idea of the fence being there, but, imo, it makes for very poor photographs. shel Alan Chan wrote: > > Had a few hours walk this Saturaday and took some pictures. I did say "Checking the system it seems that the drivers for these drives have "disappeared," either by an inadvertent erasure, becoming corrupt, or damaged by the recent installation of a new program." The software I removed was what I'd just installed ... something from Adaptec. Re: Keppler and the *ist, *ist D
I'm appalled by Kepler's piece, and think he should be embarrassed. I usually enjoy his column, and find that I generally agree with him when he discusses gear, industry trends, or places where manufacturers shouldn't cut corners. This time I think I realized something new about him. In some quarters he is apparently quite respected. I have wondered about his photography. What he shows of it in the magazine consists mostly of either (a) group or individual shots of friends at dinner, on Max 800, taken with the rtf flash; or (b) shots of buildings, sometimes taken during travel. I find his dinner shots quite mediocre, although no doubt they are meaningful to him and the participants. His building shots (such as are in this column) are a bit better, but nothing worth a showing, and little even worthy of PUG. I think he simply understands little about digital. He is apparently slow to adapt to it. He shoots jpegs in the *ist D on a mediocre consumer lens. On the *ist he shoots a mediocre consumer film (Max 800) with a mediocre consumer lens. On the *ist D he used automatic white balance. He then took all files or negatives to a minilab, and wondered that his *ist D results weren't wonderful. Combining this with the photographs of his own that he uses in the column, I now understand the man better: He is a snapshooter. He may be a long-lived icon in the photography business, but he is a snapshooter. I'm not sure that digital is for snapshooters yet, certainly not digital SLRs. On a lighter note, remember "The Official Digital Camera of the Internet"? Well, guess what? It's a Pentax trademark. Joe (the official Keppler commentator of the internet)

RE: GFM photos
I see no good reason that the digital cameras can't enter the race if having prints is the only excuse. A DC converter to 110 does amazing things like enable your printers to work off of your laptops...or maybe there is 110..never been there. At any rate hauling along a printer isn't so hard to do. I finally read the entire thread about the contest and digital issues you're facing at GFM. It does get sticky when you're talking about judging images on a monitor instead of prints.

Re: Greater Vancouver Zoo
I would love to avoid the fence whenever possible, but not in this case. They were double fenced and I was forced to stand back and took the pictures. So I switched to manual focus and focus on their eyes only. I was hoping to let the viewers noticed that they were captured and imprisoned, though I have no idea how well those pictures were executed. You're probably thinking of the small zoo at Stanley Park in downtown Vancouver. The Zoo that Alan's pictures are from is out in the suburbs of Vancouver. It used to be known as the Vancouver Game Farm, but now its called the "Greater Vancouver Zoo". They are very beautiful little monkeys, and the photos would be greatly improved by telling us what type of monkeys they are! Squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus)? I'm not sure. By coincidence I was trying to describe precisely this type of monkey to one of my brothers this weekend, but he didn't recognise my description. But is their recent stuff (the last 3 years, say) worth what they are asking for it? You can get better wines for that amount of money, even at the cheapest (per-case, futures) price. I guess the market is bearing it, so demand must be high enough to support the price. You definitely can get better wines for less, the key is to avoid those wines with high "snob" ratings from magazines like Wine Spectator or Parker's Wine Advocate. Those magazines are ok to help you avoid a bad wine, but at least Wine Spectator gets paid advertisement from the very wines they rate, so I can't imagine there not being a conflict of interest there. Parker's magazine is probably less biased. rg
Re: only MZ60 and *ist?
One thing to bear in mind in all this is that film SLRs are still selling quite well - second-hand, and that is one of the reasons new ones are selling so badly. Loads of ME Supers change hands on Ebay every week, along with a sprinkling of Z1s and Z1-Ps at pretty good prices. No doubt a few Canons and Nikons are selling, too. People can see which way the wind is blowing, and don't want to splash out a lot of wonga on new cameras, but are quite happy to buy the cameras that the digital buyers are selling. Cyril I had a similar problem with my Super A a couple of years ago (after haveing dropped it on an Irish mountain. I had it in a repair shop, without any positiv result, except replacing the film rewind knob. Finally, I took off the bottom plate and found that there was not any electrical contact between body and bottom plate, because the plate is painted black, which there should be. I haven't found a good 'standard' prime yet, and tend to use the 24-90mm zoom. I'd love to get a 31mm ltd, bit they're a bit pricey. Getting back on topic, one thing I have found that works well is the AF140C ringflash. It exposes correctly at 200 ISO, and probably at other speeds but I haven't tried it yet. The other thing that works well is the microscope adaptor. I don't get the vignetting that appears with some eyepieces on 35mm. I hope to do some more experiments with the bellows and tubes when I have a week off work next week. Won't need them on Thursday though as I'm photographing leopards at a big cat sanctuary. Hi Shel - Just a couple of ideas - Have you tried opening up the PC and checking the cables? Maybe a loose cable came undone. If you are running Win ME or Xp and have system restore active, you can just roll back your system settings to an earlier time. Search on 'System Restore' in the Help application for more details. My CDR went wonky a while back, and I just rolled back the system a couple of days and it was fine after that. Good luck! - MCC At 07:06 AM 4/15/2004 -0700, you wrote: My computer no longer recognizes the CD reader/player or the CD burner drives. Any thoughts to how this problem can be solved, other than to make a long trip to the computer repair shop? Re: Help needed, thanks ! [Me Super]
Hi Cyril, This is one of the most common failure modes of the ME Super, and it means that it's time for a CLA, either of the mirror mechanism or most likely the shutter assembly. Access to either of these requires a total disassembly of the camera, so doing it yourself would be a fairly major undertaking - if you're brave, have a look at http://www.kyphoto.com/classics/pentaxmeramblings.html, or download the ME and ME Super service manuals from Mark's website. S Cyril MARION wrote: Hello all, I'd like your help : my Me Super blocks. It happens while taking pictures : after a shot, the mirror does not get back in place. When I take off the lens to see where it blocks, the curtain is visible (not film) and the mirror is still in its upper position. Also, when I pull down the small lever located inside on the left, the mirror gets down as expected, but as soon as I release the lever it comes up again. From there, I've tested a quantity of tricks, but nothing works : light shocks on the body, use of the timer, turning the camera off and on again, taking the batteries out and in again, 125x sync, "B" position... I just found one procedure which unblocks the mirror : with a winder, if the lever is pulled down, as soon as it comes in its lower position, the winder switches (twice) and the camera gets unblocked. If the lens is not put on again, the unit works perfectly with as many shot as I want. But as soon as a lens is re-placed on the body, the camera blocks again. I've tried many types of lenses : M, A... it does not change anything. I've dismounted the lower plate and after some observation, nothing seems broken. Everything looks in good shape (even nearly new...) Does someone have an idea ? It would be nice as I like this camera very much : it is not very much used (outside shape looks quite new) and it belonged to someone close to me. Thanks in advance ! RE: LA Pdml'ers...
One of the best meals I ever had was in the Fells Point section of Baltimore. It was a recently opened French restaurant. A friend and I went and ended up ordering off the specials of the day rather than the menu. I recall it being over $100 each. But what a meal. I have found some beautiful places throughout Califormia when working there - Lemoore, San Luis Obispo, and some exclusive places in the center. On the other hand, I had the best burrito outside of a club in El Paso, Texas from the trunk and backseat of a lady's Chevrolet Impala. Re: CD Storage
Hi! Sorry I am late to this thread. Here are my bits of experience: 1. I have Plextor PlexWriter 16/10/40 - old but reliable. No coasters whatsoever unless caused by operator, aka me. 2. I used to use Verbatim disks but then they became extinct in Israel. I switched to TDK (spindles of 50) that were brought to me from USA. No problems yet. Knock on wood of my head. 3. What I would recommend is to examine periodically your archival CDs. Also you could consider making two copies of each important disk. Perhaps using different brand can be a good idea to come along with previous one. 4. I hear from many sources that burning at high speeds x48 and above is not really reliable. I cannot tell, as I cannot burn faster than x16... I would recommend trying few speeds and seeing how it comes out... Just my cents... Boris ([EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED])

After looking at my lens stash I again selected my FA77/1.8 and V125/2.5 in preference to my A*85/1.4 and A*135/1.8 lenses. The wide open performance of the 77 and 125 are excellent and I needed the speed. I also had my A20/2.8, FA31/1.8 and A50/1.2 and I used the lot. At the venue I found a stair case that was out of use at the time and I had all the lenses lined up face down with hoods on and caps off for quick access. I had the leave them a couple of times and once when I came back they had all gone, I found them nearby all capped and nicely placed back in my Mini-trekker :-) I had some wide angle dramas, I could have used my A15/3.5 but I just got away with using the 20mm and backing right up, I really would like a high performance fast wide prime, pity the 14/2.8 is only a DA lens. All in all a successful shoot, it was fast but not furious, I made just over 200 shots in just under 90 minutes. I used only my *ist D saving a combination of jpg and pef files. I converted the pef files and colour corrected the two duds and wrote the lot to a CD which the clients had in their hands only a few hours later. I was constantly switching between Tungsten and Daylight WB (I only forgot to switch for a couple of images) and the ISO needed ranged from 200 to 1600 and even the 1600 shots under tungsten are pretty well balanced and nicely saturated. A few shots have areas of bad burn out but it couldn't have been avoided in the circumstances. I might pop up an image or two from the shoot as PAWs since I've been a little slack photographically over the past few weeks. Re: Jostein's PAW#4
Jostein, I've refrained from commenting because I share Peter's sentiments... It is a rather magical photograph. The light is fantastic and the composition excellent. I like the dark, smooth lake on the left versus the white mountain and reflection on the upper right. The island(?) on the low right gives more texture. I like it all! Regards, Bob S. Peter J. Re: Jostein's PAW#4
Very nice. Just enough detail in the shadows to see things, but not over bearing which would ruin the tranquility of the shot. The reflection colour change is great. Good job. oops, I should have included the dimensions in the guidelines on my pages. Sorry about that. The max size is, IIRC, 600 pixels along the longest axis. The deadline for each gallery is 23:59 GMT+1 on the 20th in the preceding month. If you are submitting through the AutoPug, the galleries available for submission is always listed. They disappear automatically after the deadline. hth, Jostein Quoting Boros Attila <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > Last week I was walking near the river in the downtown, and ran into a > scene which I don't know how could I left unnoticed until now. Willows photo and PUG question
Last week I was walking near the river in the downtown, and ran into a scene which I don't know how could I left unnoticed until now. The warm light of the sun about an hour before sunset gave a very nice color to the foliage of the willows. I went back to the scene after the day I took this photo, but it is not half as interesting in the morning or during midday. Taken with MZ-6 and FA 28-90/3.5-5.6, Fuji Superia X-Tra 400, scanned from 10x15cm print, slightly cropped. http://ns.atn.ro/~attila/paw/willows.jpg I thought that this may be my first ever PUG submission as it fits the environemnt theme, but I can't read the submission rules (komkon is down). On the autopug page I read it must be 75Kb or less, but it does not specify restrictions regarding the size in pixels. And I also don't know the deadline, am I too late with this? With all these problems about hosting the PUG, will there be a PUG next month? Attila

Lenses I didn't use today (again)
Well I had a small job today, atmospheric shots indoors under mixed available light, so I needed a good set of primes as I had no idea what I was to be up against. Greater Vancouver Zoo
Had a few hours walk this Saturaday and took some pictures. To my surprise, I was able to take sharp pictures by handholding my 200mm & 300mm. Camera shake used to be a problem with me so I usually had the tripod with me, but not this time (left in the car because of the weight).
