I tend to agree. For Pentax, selling a bit downstream into the 300D
market makes a lot of sense. There are many sales to be had. Going
upstream from the *istD, however, seems much more difficult. Two big
reasons to me.
1) Canon and Nikon have multiple models in that segment - these are
very well received and very well endowed - the best Pentax would be
able to do is a me too type of camera that would be selling into the
$3000-5000 range. Not many buyers and very few Pentax buyers.
2) When moving upstream to higher end bodies, the system surrounding
the camera becomes much more important. The lack of IS, USM and high
speed glass, especially in the zoom category is a big weakness for
Pentax and would need to be released about the same time or at least
shown that these things will be available shortly. This is not going
to happen.

My guess is that you are going to see the next generation *istD rather
than an upper model (in a sense, it will be an upper model to the
current *istD spec) - probably bigger sensor (megapixels, not
necessarily size), a few new/more features, fixes to problems in existing
*istD, etc. The *ist D will slowly phase out as stock is depleted.

I was going to write virtually the same thing - honest. This is my
feeling exactly. Actually, if Pentax had any sense and listened to the
brains on this list, the *ist D mark 2 could be a very special camera
indeed...

Have a nice trip Alex!
I don't think you'll encounter too many difficulties in shooting.
Just shoot away till someone tells you you can't. Then you ask - Why not? and
depending on the answer you either go on shooting or stop...
I visited Munich twice a long time ago. I liked it. People were friendly and offered
me and my friend places to stay each night.
I went to the Olympic Stadium and took a few shots with a borrowed Instamatic. I'm a
sports nut.
Then there were all the bier houses, like the Hofbraühaus with some historic
background so to speak. There was a Tyroler brass band in funny lederhosen and big
breasted ladies carrying around more and bigger buckets of bier than you and I will
ever be able to carry...
Oh yes, there are the Pinakotheks - Die Alte, Neue and der Moderne - don't miss them.
Great collections of art. (I was hitch hiking through Europe, visiting as many Art
museums in as many capitals I could.)
And of course, I almost forgot - look up the Lenbach-haus, a great small museum of
(mostly?) German expressionist art. A great little beautiful museum.

I never visited Dublin, but I've met many nice people from there. They are pretty cool
and friendly. (If you run into Adrian Smith - kind of curly hair if he's still got any
- say hello from me, will you. Very nice guy.)

Report to the list with photos when you get back.

Bon voyage,

 Hello, everybody!

It's me again... this time, I'll go for about a week in Munich, then I'll be
in Dublin (for another week). And I leave tomorrow!
It will be my first international travel (except for a 1-day trip in
Bulgaria) and for the first time I'll be in an airplane... I must confess,
I'm quite scared about this (and of course I recently saw 'Disasters' on
 Discovery Channel; very encouraging.).
This is a business trip, but I'll have some spare time in which I intend to
take some photographs and see interesting places. So, any advice will be
appreciated... and I'd also like to know what am I allowed to photograph and
 what not.
I'll be looking for some (cheap) second hand photo stuff, I don't have much
money right now but who knows (I found - in Romania - an auto-extension tube
set for 30 euros, maybe I can find for the same amount any of the Pentax
Limiteds -slap! slap! wake up, Alex!! - grin). If you know a good photo
store, pls. let me know about it.
Unfortunately, I don't think there is any PDML meeting there the next week
(nor in Dublin), I'd really like to meet some of you - as I won't go to GFM
 this year :(
Btw: after some delicate calculations, I'll decide if I must unsubscribe for
that period (I mean, if my 10MB account can't store messages for about 2
weeks). I'll try to read the messages anyway, at least from the mail archive
(and the personal emails of course).

Re: *istD a Poor Man's color meter?

2004-05-11 Thread John Francis

 Hello All:

 Assume:

Set the white balance of an *istD to Flash.

Make a properly exposed photo of a gray card ... by Flash.

Make properly exposed photos of a gray card ... by ambient light only
in various ambient lighting situations (all-tungsten,
tungsten-daylight mix, various fluorescent-lit environments, etc.).

Read and record the RGB values of all the gray card images using Mac's
Digital Color Meter utility or Photoshop.

 Question:

Is there then a way to use the difference between the RGB values of the
Flash gray card exposure, and the RGB values of the various no-flash
ambient lighting gray card exposures to determine a suitable filter to
place over the flash to match the ambient light?

Simple answer: Yes (more or less).
In fact some flashes come with a set of filters and diffusers, which
quite often include a filter to balance the flash to tungsten lights.

More complicated answer: Yes, but with some reservations.
To truly match the flash to the ambient light, you need a filter
that converts the whole power spectrum of the flash to the profile
of the ambient lighting. That can't be done from just a three-value
measurement (the R, G B values). In practice this doesn't matter,
as most lights (and most materials) have fairly smooth frequency spectra,
so you can get close enough by just matching the curves at a few points.

Finally, assume no filter over the lens ... just match the flash output
to the ambient light, and color-correct the image globally in PS
after-the-fact, or in-camera by custom-white balance or by choosing an
 optimal camera WB setting.

If you want to correct after-the-fact, shoot RAW.

I found the E-10 a mixed bag, of course it's not really a fair comparison as
the *ist D is much faster with any type of review or saving. However the mode

When I first picked up the E-10 I couldn't believe the amount of buttons that
were scattered across it's body however quite soon after I realized that they
were generally quite well placed. I found that I could operate most controls

I would like to see Pentax as something akin to Apple in PCs (which is
personal computer for those younger, not an IBM type PC which runs
microsoft g). Products that stand out by their features and
usability. Like a big viewfinder, etc.

However, in photography these niche markets are probably
even smaller, and Apple does have the profitable graphic professional
market much covered, unlike Pentax.

What I would like most would be a no-nonsense digital camera. One that
doesn't take you from the essentials of photography - seeing well and
controling quickly. But I guess there are not enough prospective buyers like us :)

It's true. I agree with that very much. Taking action shots with a manual
focus lens is very difficult at first. Man I was photographic this duck
when suddenly it took off and I thought I was going to get a great in flight
shot... but then I realized I was turning the focus ring the wrong
direction, then I turned it back the other direction, but due to the
direction the duck was flying the focal area passed quicker than I expected
and by that time it was pretty much too far away to be worth taking a
picture of... Better luck next time I guess. So yeah, all those features

Similar story for me. My dad had a Pentax Spotmatic when I was growing
up. When I finished college I was borrowing it from him, and used it
for a few years after moving out to Seattle. I wanted to get my own
system, so I bought a used ME Super but continued to use his lenses for
a while. A little later I wanted a new camera and picked up a ZX-5n.
I could have picked a new system when looking at the ZX-5n (at the
time I had two lenses that weren't that expensive), but nothing else
was as compact. I wanted something which I could use while cycling
and hiking and Pentax fit the bill. I really liked the simple ZX-5n
UI and appreciated it even more after using a Olympus IS-1 (their ZLR)
for a couple of months.
I like to think that I would make a similar decision if purchasing a
new D-SLR now. There is still nothing as small as their cameras, and
I still find it easier to figure out their UI than anything else. The
performance of all of the top systems are fine for me.
Whether it has been a good choice or not, I don't know. I do know that
I
envy the larger choice of lenses available to Nikon and Canon users. I
envy
Image Stabilzation. I don't like being last on the block to get the

I don't. IS lenses are heavier and expensive. The only thing that I
envy with my *ist D is the smaller size of my ZX-5n.
and I doubt whether Pentax will ever be a major force in the market
again.

I don't really care as long as they continue to make great cameras.
The *ist D is doing well enough for 3rd parties to make lenses that
target it, and that is fine with me. I paid a lot for my *ist D
(early adopter, paid the initial MSRP) but don't think I could get a
better camera than the *ist D for the current going price.

AU 11,000? Wow... Thats pricey, that seems really high, the exchange
rate for today has that at 7648.29 in USD. Seems extremely high priced. It
must have a full sized sensor, at least 16MP, in camera IS, a USM equivalent
technology. Maybe it'll put Pentax back on the map, maybe I'll be able to
find Pentax LOCALLY at a place other than Wal-Mart!!! I live in a smallish
town, well, not small really, average sized, but the camera shops in town
only sell Canon and Nikon.

Hi All,
I'd kept quiet on what I'd heard from an Australian Pentax rep. but as
it's under discussion...

The rep stated matter of factly that Pentax was releasing a low end *ist
D based on the MZ-60 that would have a street price of about AU$1,600
and a brand new high end model that would come in at around AU$11,000.
Release for the MZ-60 D (or whatever they call it - Maybe #ist) would be
September and the high end model before Christmas

Should I keep this email for future reference?

On 11/5/04, BRUCE D, discombobulated, offered:

This is not going
to happen.

My guess is that you are going to see the next generation *istD rather
than an upper model (in a sense, it will be an upper model to the
current *istD spec) - probably bigger sensor (megapixels, not
necessarily size), a few new/more features, fixes to problems in
existing
*istD, etc. The *ist D will slowly phase out as stock is depleted.

I was going to write virtually the same thing - honest. This is my
feeling exactly. Actually, if Pentax had any sense and listened to the
brains on this list, the *ist D mark 2 could be a very special camera
indeed...

Cheers,
  Cotty

Re: Photokina rumour mill has started...

2004-05-11 Thread John Francis

At that price (which is what? Around $5000 US?) I'd assume they'd have
to be aiming at the EOS-1D market, and going for a larger sensor than
that in the *ist-D. Probably not full frame, as I'd expect the new
DA lenses to work with any new body. Whether that means 8MP or 10MP
depends on the available sensor technology - Pentax aren't large enough
to have their own sensor built to their own specifications.

Apart from the larger sensor (for better wide angle performance), what
else might we see? I'm sure a lot of people here would clamour for the
return of the mechanical aperture sensor, but I'm not sure that will come.
I *would* expect to see a larger buffer, and a higher burst rate (perhaps
not 40 frames at 8fps, but certainly better than 5 frames at a mere 2.5fps).
I'd like to see ISO 50 as an option, but that again depends on the sensor,
as does the pixel depth (if pressed, I'd predict 14 bits per pixel).

Apart from that, what else could there be? Better sealing? Firewire?
Built-in 802.11g?

if the high end body has at least 10 megapixels, i am buying one. if not,
it's a sign to me that Pentax isn't truly serious and i will be thinking
very carefully about what to get next.

If the technology is a true replacement, I'm happy to make use of it.
I see no merit in being able to do, by hand, something that a simple
mechanism can do as well or better.

Personally, for what I do, auto-focus has been a great benefit. It's
not perfect, but it's useful. It gets things wrong sometimes, but not
as often as I was missing shots (especially with the greater control
on AF point selection that I have with the *ist-D). But that's mostly
because of the sort of photography I do - in other situations, manual
focus would produce a better image (in the hands of a sufficiently
skilled photographer). Unfortunately a consequence of the trend to
auto-focus has been to make manual focus a great deal harder.

I rarely use continuous shooting mode, either - the one big exception would
be at the start of a race if I'm in position to get a good start shot.

But I still look for a high frame rate for my cameras - the 4+ fps PZ-1p is
ready to shoot again in half the time of the relatively sluggish MZ-S or *ist-D.
I've quite often taken back-to-back exposures in single-frame mode, and it's
extremely annoying not to get a shot because you're waiting for the camera.

Further to that point: I was a little irritated to find just how often I was
waiting for the *ist-D to empty the buffer during the race at Long Beach.
Most of the time the buffer was large enough, but there were enough times
when the camera wasn't ready to shoot for it to be a noticeable problem.

At the end of April, I shot a few more rolls of my friend Jennifer, and her

moreso than Neopan 1600 pushed). I've only scanned about 1/2 of the ones I
like (out of 2 rolls). I originally uploaded one for a PAW (hence, it's in
my PAW folder), then I couldn't decide which I liked best, so I uploaded a
second, thinking I'd have a double PAW. Then I thought, oh hell, just
one more, and now I'm thinking that I can't have a 3 part PAW.

So, here's 3 photos from the concert:

I've also uploaded some others on dotPhoto:

I'm not sure I like dotPhoto (for one thing, it doesn't show the images full
size, and for another, I haven't figured a way to title them, other than my
jpeg file name. also, it seems that I can only load 10 photos per album).

Anyway, I'll scan some more, and maybe post them. In the meanwhile, if
anyone has read this far, and has comments, I'd love to hear them.

Re: Munich and Dublin

2004-05-11 Thread Gianfranco Irlanda
Hi Alex,

It's been quite some time since I visited Dublin, but there are
a couple of things I won't miss while there.
First one that comes to mind is the Trinity College, where you
MUST see the Old Library and the Book of Kells. A visit to the
Castle (now more a palace than a castle) may be interesting. A
walk in Saint Stephen's Green is nice, and a good photo
opportunity, although quite a cliché, are the different colours
doors of the Georgian houses.
Don't forget Temple Bar, a very crowded district full of pubs.
There should be other things to see, I'm sure...
This said, I think I should return to Dublin sooner or later...
(btw, my surname means exactly Ireland :-)

I recall two shops with a good selection of used Pentax
equipment (while I was there - in 1999 - one had a complete LX
set with motor, AF280T, grip, etc.; another shop showed a black
K2 with K 50/1.4 that I bought). A PDMLer from Dublin told me
that things had changed a bit, but I would attempt a look. One
of the shops was near the end of Grafton street (coming from the
Trinity College, on the right), the other one was in one of the
streets in front of the central Post Office in O'Connel Street
(if I'm right, it's in the street with the statue of James Joyce
at the beginning - Earl Street -); it's on the right if you come
from O'Connel Street.
Hope this helps.

Ciao,

Gianfranco

Seems like a lot of people on the list like cute pics of children. While
wandering about in Fairfax, CA, just a bit north of San Francisco, this
little red-haired girl appeared in the window of a bakery. Grabbed a quick
shot with the Rollei ... I guess this is an homage to frank as the pic's a
bit soft. For those who are not familiar with the Rollei 35 cameras, they
are scale focusing, and it looks as though my guess was just a bit off.
Couldn't rely on DOF to cover my ass, either, as I was shooting ad fairly
wide apertures. Of well, the pic's got a cute girl, some flowers,
Christmas decorations ...

RE: PAW - Some duck in the park

2004-05-11 Thread frank theriault
Shawn,

PAW stands for Photo a Week. So, you submit a photo every week, more or
less. No one is counting. If you miss a week, you don't get kicked out or
anything. If you post more than one a week, well, I guess that's fine, too
(although if you, like, do it every day, someone may take you to task).

For instance, I posted a PAW tonight, only 6 days after my last one. I
doubt anyone will notice.

There are no prizes. There's no plan to publish or in any way compile them.
Those of us who feel they want to, simply look at them, and comment
(again, if we want to).

Sometimes one gets many comments, sometimes not. Don't read a lot into it
one way or the other.

Okay, your duck photo:

One thing you have to know, is that there are some amazing wildlife
photographers on this list. Guys who make their living at it. Guys who,
regardless of whether they're pros, just really know what they're doing, and
blow pretty much everyone else out of the water - even guys who shoot with
Canons and Nikons, and we all know that those cameras take way better pix
than Pentaxes vbg.

Unfortunately, that means that ordinary wildlife photos look, well, pretty
ordinary compared to what we're used to seeing.

I'd say yours is an ordinary shot, of an ordinary bird. Not a bad shot,
just nothing to make it stand out. It's just there, without a lot to say,
IMHO. I think what you may want to do is go to the site of a wildlife
photographer, and look at what they do, figure out how they do it, and try
to emulate it (and then work it into your own style). Here's the bird page
of one of our best wildlife guys, Mark Cassino (there are many other really
good ones here, but none better than Mark, IMHO):

http://www.markcassino.com/galleries/birds/birds.htm

Look through the gallery, and see what he's done with birds. How they stand
out from their backgrounds. How freaking sharp the birds are. How they're
doing interesting things, or how their bodies are in interesting positions.

Look at what he's doing with composition and lighting.

See what I mean?

Now, again, I'm not saying that your duck shot is a bad one. But, one of
the reasons we post on PAW is to get reactions from others, with a view to
improving your work, and learning from others. I'm not trying to be harsh,
but rather, helpful, so I hope that you accept this in the spirit in which
it's intended.

regards,
frank

FWIW I'm currently using a pair of calibrated Philips 109P screens.
The blacks could be a little better but I'm not complaining - the first
one was free, and I bought the second after the price halved due to the
booming popularity of LCDs.

I'm currently saving for an Apple HD Cinema Display because these two
screens are far too big (and are probably cooking my brain). LCDs also
have a much shorter warm-up time while consuming less power.
Unfortunately the really good ones are really expensive.

Re: Pentax * ist D doing badly in Fotomagazin test

2004-05-11 Thread Dr. Heiko Hamann
Hi Arnold,

on 11 May 04 you wrote in pentax.list:

The original Fotomagazin test of the *ist D was published in the issue
12/2003. If I remember correctly from reading in the shop (I never
bought that issue) the score on resolution was so low that it could have
been only cause either by misfocusing or some other manipulation.

Those testers are simply mad: in the actual Colorfoto they've tested
the Nikon D70 using a superb 60mm macro lens. All other DSLR tests
before were made with simple zoom lenses (e.g. the 18-35 with the
*istD). And now guess - the D70 has the best picture quality of all!

There is a simple formula to calculate the test results - just
multiplicate a certain factor with the number of adds that a producer
buys ;-) Have you ever heard of a bad test of a Sigma or Tamron 28-300
superzoom? Gues why... ;-)

Your idea about experimenting different lighting conditions is
interesting, the problem is not the many visits (it is in my

sunny blue or heavy overcast... So I have to wait some time for an

Yes

We were 12 photographers who made one self portrait each month for a year, and had an
exhibition in March the year after. The picture depended on the mood that month, some
funny, some seriuos.

All of them. Often hand held with a wide angle, some with self timer and tripod, some

Photokina rumour mill has started...

2004-05-11 Thread Rob Brigham
I think Roland Mabo used to post on here, but now uses Photozone. Take
the following as you will - depending on how well you know Roland:

___

Pentax are expecting to show two new DSLR's at the Photokina show in
september. One entry level/beginner DSLR (like the Nikon D70 and Canon
300D/Digital Rebel) and one more pro-oriented. The new entry
level/beginner DSLR are near it's completion state and it's likely to be
in shops early autumn. Pentax has officially declared that they will
release two new DSLR's before the end of 2004, if this mean that the
pro model will be out in the shops before christmas or just showned
(announced) before the year ends - this I don't know.

The new entry level/beginner model is said to be more plastic and has a
simpler feature set than the *ist D. Nothing is known about the new pro
DSLR, it's rumoured to use a different sensor than the current 6Mp from
Sony.

The *ist D uses a control interface similar to the Z-1p (shutter and
aperture dials on the body). It has a plastic outer shell build upon a
stainless steel chassi (quite similar in build to the Z-1p). The MZ-S
has magnesium alloy inside and out.

They have the same metering, but the actual results may differ since
digital has a different light sensitivity and exposure latitude.

Best wishes
Roland

__

* DA 14
Pentax has said that the DA 14 will be in the shops around mid-June.
It's still May! Don't expect new products to be released earlier than
Pentax has said. ;-)

* New DA lenses
Pentax are working on more lenses especially designed for DSLR's, news
on this will come in time for the Photokina show. This includes both
consumer friendly lenses and pro-products (to support the new pro-DSLR).

The system is not dying, it's just several months between the PMA and
the Photokina show which explain the inactivity. Pentax does not make
major announcements and/or releases between shows...

Have a cool summer and prepare yourself for the Photokina show. :-) By
tradition, Pentax makes it's major announcements/releases at Photokina.

Best wishes

Hi,
sorry for the topic. I will not put forth any political views, nor
spur flames (hopefuly). I am not trying to start a flame war. I am
just offering a lead to those interested.

If interested in what is going on in the world:

I draw your attention to region of Caucasus, Chechnya, a republic
in the Russian Federation. Moscow-appointed (in totally manipulated
elections) chechen president Kadyrow was killed in a bomb attack
this Sunday. In a country where the second chechen-russian war is
in its fourth year, this might lead to a further escalation of a
conflict which is marked by growing neglect of any human righs
obligations (by both sides). All this quite overlooked by the
world, with most media coverage only on Iraq.

BTW, Lev Nikolayeitch Tolstoy wrote several stories on the region,
which are essential to understanding even the current conflict: Hadzi

 balanced
well but heavy.Glad to hear the Pentax and prime worked well.I may do the

 dusty

The Nikon is not that great in low light conditions either.Sounds like
 Canon has that
 beat.Although my

light and its obviously grainy, but for 2x3 thumbnails for the show
 book,look fine.Panning
 helps to.I'm
never sure how to WB these things.Cloudy for indoor or tungsten.
 Thank god for PS.lol

Saturday was the Tibetan Terrier Show. Didn't
get to take my group shot
after all. The show ended and most people buggered off. Penny, the
organiser, was most disappointed. She had been looking forward to having
 a
pic with 39 Tibetan terriers and their people. I was rather relieved!
Anyway, I was totally exhausted after standing around for 4 hours
 watching
little hairy dogs trotting around a ring and lifting a 10D with
 70-200/2.8
(IS/USM) attached. The other camera I had with me was the *istD with a
77mm. What a beauty! That combo is absolutely fantastic and I love it to
death! The best photos of the day were with that pairing. Wide open and
 at
ISO 800 was pretty darn good! The only downside is that the low-light
focusing on the istD is crap! The Canon is miles better in that respect.
For handling and quality of photos, the Pentax won hands down. Who'd a
   thought it!

OTOH, handholding at 1/45s with an IS lens didn't turn out too bad g
