RE: PAW - Bridge II

2004-07-16 Thread Tanya Mayer Photography

DagT -

these are a very cool series of pics. I love the colour, composition and
movement that each possesses.

Now, I have something else to say

I just viewed the rest of the images that you have on photo.net and I am
extremely impressed by your work! Some of the shots I have seen before, but
most, I've never seen.

DagT, I have always looked with interest at everything that you post as you
have an extremely artistic and creative take on things, however, my respect
for your work has just jumped up another level. I just LOVE your stuff!!

This shot here just ROCKS:

 http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2519240

And as for those in your "Unmanipulated" series, well, omg, they are just
fantastic! The one entitled "reflection" is mind-boggling just how *did*
you do that?!?!

I also love the shots of the capsicum!

Sorry to sound as though I am gushing here, but honestly, I just love your
work, and I think that credit should always be given where it is due. If
you're not doing it already, you should be hanging this stuff in art
galleries...

It is so great to see a photographer with such unique vision, and a creative
take on his subjects that is so different from anything I have ever seen
before!

:-)

lots of offbrand ~19-35 zooms (vivitar, phoenix, etc)

out of this price range (100-150 USD), what's the

Another: Pentax is doing fine as a company but is beginning to
de-emphasize their photo division, or at least moving to a leaner photo
division..

Possible explanations that come to mind:

demand has suddenly skyrocked and Pentax can't ship fast enough (yeah
right)
labor troubles, political troubles at their lens assembly plant
withholding supply from US until currency exchange rates improve
Pentax is having cash flow problems
Pentax has a problem with parts supply (plausible if K mount hardware
is the
issue)
Pentax is in the process of moving their assembly operations and the
move
has disrupted operations
Pentax is failing as a company

It might be the solution for you but given the cost of insurance here to cover
theft from an unattended car only I insure a limited amount of gear in any
case. So I might as well just lug it about. I had over AU$40k worth of
Leica/Mamiya kit in my Mini-trekker on my last O/S trip and from recollection
it cost me around AU$1200 for the premium and another AU$1200 to cover the time
overseas.

I don't leave my kit locked in a car even for short periods, it's just too darn
easy to smash a window and grab. I never leave kit in the car park at hotels
either, they are like shopping malls for crooks. It doesn't help either that I
have a waggon/estate.

Sometimes I'd like to have had a lens with me that's still at home but them's
the breaks.

Shaun,
My household insurance - which is only available through brokers and is

very good. It covers my equipment in the house or anywhere in the
country out of the house as long as it's not out of the house for more

replacement and you don't have to specifically insure particular items

cover extends to all items, not just camera gear. I haven't checked

The tape will make a lens look like an A lens, but it will not make it
look like an A lens set to A. The contact which makes it look like
it's set to A needs to stick out from the lens mount because the
contact is recessed into the camera mount. That is the hard bit
because it needs to be spring loaded to get past the rest of the
contacts.

Pentax usually isn't full of surprises. We heard about the DA lenses
4-6 months before they were released, and the new Baby-D was announced
almost 6 months before it will be released (with rumors coming much
earlier).

They've been eliminating or having on backorder many more FA lenses
than the number of DA lenses that they have announced.

It would be really nice to see a roadmap of what is coming, along
the lines of the one that Olympus released after the E-1 came out.

Re: Pentax is Dying

2004-07-16 Thread Alan Chan
3. Pentax is scaling back. They will produce new lenses, like the DAs, at a
steady pace, but will not produce enough to meet sudden surges in demand.
(Foolish, if you ask me, since the demand is now. If not met now, the
demand may not exist when production becomes adequate.)
Some news from Taiwan retailers (or just rumour) suggested some Pentax FA
lenses were not manufactured anymore (like FA100/2.8 & FA50/2.8 etc) because
they are expecting new lenses to replace them. But then again, nobody can
confirm.

Back when I got an early DA 16-45, then my lab ordered two more, I checked
the serial numbers against when the lenses arrived. I suggested that Pentax
was producing the DA 16-45 at a rate of about 500 per month. Someone
protested that such a production number was way too low. To the contrary,
the evidence suggests that Pentax is indeed producing very few SLR lenses.
Maybe they were uncertain about the actual demand prior to the introduction
so they were playing safe not to oversizing their production line?

The bottom line is that Pentax is shafting us serious photographers. And if
they lack a full lens line-up, what serious photographers will buy Pentax?
In Pentax sense, serious mean 120 (or at least what they said). :-)
I was not doing photography in the late 1980s when the F lenses were being
introduced. I wonder if the situation then was similar.
Ironically, by the time they introduced FA* lenses, the demand was still
very low (except the FA*24 & the FA*85).

As I search unsuccessfully for some used K-mount gear I find myself
wondering if there's a market for "vintage re-issue" lenses, the way
Fender Guitars put out "1957" and "1962" replica models when they
discovered that everybody preferred older guitars to the current models.

Presumably Japan is being swept by nostalgia, with Cosina putting out
cameras and lenses in leica screw, M42, and K-mount, and Nikon putting
out the FM3a and a retro 45mm lens to go with it. Leica put out a
re-issue of the original pre-M model recently.

So, why does not Pentax put out some of the legendary and
impossible-to-find K-series designs again? They could either update
them with AF and A connections and make them to the standard of the FA
limiteds so you could use them with the *istD and such, or simply
re-issue them in original K-style.

Pentax really hasn't made anything like the K18 since then, and the K15,

K85/1.8, K105/2.8, and K135/2.5 are very hard to come by even though
there
were passable replacements put out in the M and later eras.

You could argue that nobody uses primes any more, and that there is no
market for Pentax premium lenses, but if this were true you'd think that
you could find the originals cheap...

Interestingly, this is one of the few Pentax cameras selling at this
price. LXen are normally $400-600, and the best of the old old stuff
is $200-300. From what I've seen a $400 killer camera is a good thing to
have in today's market.

> >Crikey, are people still spending this much on a film camera?
>
> I'm now working part-time at a camera store and I can tell you the
> answer to that question is no.

That's clearly not entirely true. The best you can argue from experience
is "people don't spend $300-400 on a film camera in the camera store I
work at". Mail order houses still stock more expensive film cameras
(which are now niche market items more than they ever were). Used places
still stock cameras for much more than $300-400, and presumably this is
because there is still a market for them. If KEH couldn't sell them, you
wouldn't think they'd buy them.

Nikon apparently still sells a number of N80s, which are about $400.
Of course Nikon and Canon are tripping over themselves to produce a slew of
$200-250 film cameras, so clearly either most of the market is there or
most of the profit is there.

What's really falling out of use of course are the $2000 pro SLRs, because
most pros are using digital now. $1000 semi-pro SLRs are probably
suffering too because for $1000 you can buy a bottom-of-the-line digital
(and get much less camera...) or a used top-of-the-line model.

One problem the new camera market presumably has is that as pros and
advanced amateurs have dumped their stuff for digital, the used market
is flooded with great products at low prices. It's gotta be hard to sell
a "modern K1000" because you couldn't produce it cheaply enough to compete
with the used K1000s on the market.

B&H lists the *ist D as in stock, but not the *ist D/DA 16-45 combo.
Pentax, as I understand it, has sold many fewer *ist Ds than they had
hoped to. It is lenses that they cannot/will not produce.

I speculate as follows:
1. All lens assembly is being moved to Vietnam (poor Nguyen), or
elsewhere, and we are in the middle of this transition.

2. While there may still be demand for some higher-quality lenses, that
demand is not high enough to warrant a production run. (Well, this
wouldn't explain why the DA lenses are unavailable.)

3. Pentax is scaling back. They will produce new lenses, like the DAs,
at a steady pace, but will not produce enough to meet sudden surges in
demand. (Foolish, if you ask me, since the demand is now. If not met
now, the demand may not exist when production becomes adequate.)

4. Pentax's remaining manufacturing capacity is going into digital
point-and-shoot cameras. Are the lenses for these also assembled in Vietnam?

Pål's informant claimed that Pentax would produce only five DA lenses.
Pentax has stated that some of these will be "consumer-friendly." A DAJ
18-55 to go with the baby D would be essential.

Back when I got an early DA 16-45, then my lab ordered two more, I
checked the serial numbers against when the lenses arrived. I suggested

I would like to have seen you get in closer on the sax player with that and fill the

However my circumstances were different. I pulled the CF card out of the reader

any images. I did not delete the images. The other weird thing is that the version I
have does not recognize .pef (pentax RAW files) so the recovered files had .tf as

Hi there Bob – Nico from South Africa again

I used your London route to the photographic shops – Thanks. I offered
my gear to them and will do a trade-in/sell on Saturday.

I just thought maybe to give you or anyone you know a final opportunity
to buy the gear – The trade-in prices are not bad from 2 of the stores
but you know that there sell price is still way-more. I am to short in
the UK to use e-bay etc… So maybe some-one wants my list of goodies.

You might still have the list but here it is:

LX (1982 model) with normal finder and 50mm 1.7 – working –
cleaned/services in the last year

24-50mm Pentax manual lens

AF 400-T flash plus all cables etc..

FB-1 Finder (the big one that also rotate)

Extra focussing screen

MZ5n with 28-80mm lens plus battery grip (AA Batt)

Sunpak dedicated flash (swivel and tilt great results)

100-300 Sigma zoom lens.

Because of the time constrained I cannot sell the parts separately so
the LX system above can go for £450 and the MZ5n for £200 or £550 for
both to same buyer…

You can reach me on UK mobile phone of friend of ours Susan – 078 1392
4734

Please I am thinking maybe some-one on the PDML is looking for an LX or
MZ5n in really good condition and the store will ask far more after I
traded them in…

Thanks Bob

Oddly enough, I'll generally leave my gear in the trunk of my car in the
hotel car park rather than leave it in the hotel room. If I'm staying
at an expensive hotel, of course, I'll check the bag with the concierge.
But there's more theft from hotel rooms than from just about anywhere else.

Daniel,

It's possible that your ISP is treating PDML mail as spam, based on the
quantity of posts coming in, or that PDML is being relayed to you via an ISP
that is blacklisted by your ISP as a known souce of spam (that 2nd
suggestion is pure speculation).

Contact your ISP to find out if they are filtering out PDML. In the
meantime you may need to go on the digest.

I saw an Alpa body, that took M42 mount lenses, at a swap meet a few years
ago. It looked like the Chinon Mematron. I owned a Mematron body because
it allow AE with pre-SMC Super Takumar lenses. The camera came out, I
believe, shortly after the ES Pentaxes were introduced. The AE on the
Chinon wasn't very good.

That's what insurance is for.

If I spent my life worrying about what might happen, I'd spend
all week cooped up in the house, never setting foot outside.

(Come to think of it, that's what I do, anyway. But it's not
because I'm afraid of the risks the big wide world contains)

I bought my photographic equipment to use, not to leave at home.
(not that it's really any safer at home than locked in the trunk)
In any case, if you're really worried you can always get a nice
strong Pelican, and a security cable which you attach to some
nice strong point on the car. That's going to delay a potential
thief long enough that you're safe from opportunistic losses.

You may be joking but I think it is only a matter of time (years)
before Cosina or someone else does just that. Certainly a digital
k-mount body would sell really well I think, particularly as Pentax
themselves seem intent on either ignoring their own manual focus
k-mount clients, or treating them as an after thought as on the *istD.

Or better still a digital SLR body with different, interchangeable lens
mounts so you can use it with Nikon, Pentax and Canon lenses.

You need to remove
the K mount ring from the bellows, mount that on the camera then place
the camera and ring on the bellows. You have to do this with the MZ-S

Ok, I know, I usually do, if I use PZ-1 or MZ-S too. For some reason tend to

Or, if you want a new basic plastic camera, somewhat less ugly, the Pentax ZX-M
is still on the market; B&H lists it, with a zoom, for a little under that
$225. Same "retro" controls and, I believe, same top speed of 1/2000.
Guess they're depending on Pentax's invisibility to sell this: "Revive those
Pentax lenses" indeed!

You're right. I'd almost forgotten about this camera!
Just for kicks, I'm going to go to the Pentax site and see if I can get
some specs on this body.
Good call.

If B&H sells it for $225 + or -, with a zoom, the body alone, if you can
buy it that way, ought to be a bit less, no?
Interesting!

Thanks for understanding, Bruce.

As for "Pentax Sucks", apparently a lot of Pentax diehards feel the same at
present. It might be all about the glass, but you gotta hang the glass on
something, after all.

I'm referring to road trip shooting, driving the back roads, stopping,
taking a short hike, shooting from the side of the road, or inside of a
nation/state park, etc. If I want to do something for a day or two,
I'll leave the gear in the hotel. Of course I would not leave expensive
gear in the trunk for a couple of days.

I think this might actually be the case for some of the popular lenses.

I ordered my FA 35/2 in Feb or March and it showed up in April.
During that time everyone showed it as backordered. It was still
shown as backordered when it finally arrived from Adorama.

I expect that the *ist D is causing people to change their lens
lineup. It has for me. Before purchasing the *ist D I didn't own any
of the lenses except for my 50/1.7 that I now carry on a regular
basis.

The 35/2 is a pretty obvious normal lens choice for the *ist D (28/2.8
is another, but a stop slower). I'm making the wild guess that most
of the 35/2s which are being sold now, and forcing them into
backordered status, are being used on the *ist D.

Or Pentax is about to bring out a whole new line of lenses and cameras

I've had some of the same thoughts. I am beginning to suspect that
Pentax is
not shipping any lenses and their entire lens line is going on
backorder as
current inventory is depleted. B&H and Adorama both show numerous
Pentax
lenses as being backordered and they have been for quite some time.
The only
new Pentax lens KEH lists at all is the 28-80 FA J zoom. They've
apparently
sold off their entire inventory of new Pentax lenses except that unit.

Pentax is failing as a company

there are probably other equally plausible explanations. I share your
frustration.

I am only guessing that he meant to do soft proofing. View the pic in proof
mode, choosing the Oly ICC profile and adjust until it looks right then print.
I've found that without any adjustments the contrast is a touch on the low
side and the colours tend to yellow/green. I guess the rather crude profiling
in the driver stems from the fact that there is only one type of paper available.

Now for a little tale.
I took my printer to use on-site at the German Shepherd Specialty Show I
was photographing at the weekend. Due to an oversight on my part, I only
had one ribbon and one pack of paper. I called my daughter to go to the shops
for me on Saturday so that I would have enough to last through the Sunday
too. First stop was Henry's. She bought a pack of paper and asked about
the ribbon. yes, we can get it but it will take two weeks was the reply,
so off she went to a different shop and managed to buy a ribbon at $15 less
that Henry's would have charged.
I happened to be in Henry's yesterday and noticed that they had an Olympus
print kiosk set up in the shop. Guess what they were using to print out 8x10s
- the 440 (400 replacement, but takes same media). I asked one of the assistants
about where they got the stock for the printer if they didn't actually have
it in stock themselves. She then produced a ribbon from underneath the counter
"one of these you mean?"

Anyway.
The best thing about this printer is people's reactions when they see it
working. Usually, the first thing they say is "oh, there's something wrong
with your printer, it's only printing in yellow". Hee hee.

Do yourself a favor - buy some insurance for the lens, and leave the
filter off. No way would I impair the fabulous optics of this lens by
permanently installing a cruddy filter in front of it.
