OT: Looking for mini enablement

2006-02-03 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

I've decided to return to film shooting for a while... To do it in style
;-), I need a range-finder unit - you know, one that clips on flash shoe
- just to measure distance... Preferably both in feet and meters or just
in feet... If anyone has a working device that fits above description -
I'd be happy to be enabled by you.

Thanks.

Boris

P.S. To make things clear - I'm not looking for range finder camera,
just for range finder piece to measure distance (in feet).

Re: MX screen in my istD - another question

2006-02-03 Thread Derby Chang
I'm with Bob. The Beattie screens aren't that much brighter than the
Pentax originals. I didn't have to adjust exposure on the PZ1. But
manual focusing is a little better with the Beattie. The fresnel is a
bit "grittier", and of course it has the split image prism.

I'm not familiar with the term Prism screen, is that what a
Beattie is? I used Pentax replacement "grid" screens to
assist in compositions & trying to keep level horizons. When
I last checked out Beattie screens years ago their main
advantage was a brighter viewfinder, but the exorbitant cost
(roughly twice the cost of the Pentax screen) excluded
further consideration.

How long does it take for the exposure to complete.
This may be an urban legend, but apparently with the original swing
lens cameras, it was possible for a person to ourun the swing and get
in the picture on both sides of a large group

The clockwork mechanism has two speeds. The fast one is about 1s, the
slow one about 5s. It's definitely possible to be in both ends of the

I trimmed the rest of Shel's comments 'cause I didn't agree about the blur.

One would think, but remember last year?

http://www.diggersrealm.com/mt/archives/001106.html

Mind you, when Dave and I came back into The Great White North from
GFM last year with the remnants of many people's beers in his giant
cooler, a lovely young thing at the border smiled at us, asked where
we lived (never asked for ID), and asked if we had alcohol or tobacco
to declare. Dave said "we have about 48 beer in the cooler left over
from out camping trip." She smiled a big gorgeous smile and said, "Do
you mean ~about~ 48 beer, or ~exactly~ 48 beer?" Dave smiled back and
said, "Oh yeah, ~exactly~ 48 beer," and she waved us through.

No ID check, no searches, didn't even ask if we had anything else to declare.

I think it was Dave's Kenora Tux that got us through. That, and his
beard along with my week-old stubble. What else could we be but
Canucks?

cheers,

I have the FA28/2.8, whci has kind of become my standard lens on the

Better manual focusing aids.

Microprism/Split prism screens are great for this. And Pentax does
not offer such a product.

The product at katzeyeoptics.com is what I've ordered... should be

I would want a screen that has a split prism that assists in the focusing,
especially in circumstances where lighting is poor, - e.i. in
clubs. I usually focus manually, and more recently have decided that my
older f4 Pentax lenses are better than the autofocus lenses

that I have in my possession.

We call em split image screens.
Generally, their usefulness diminishes as light levels deteriorate.
Look for a screen designed for super telephoto use, they tend to have a less
agressive nap, and so transmit more light to the finder.

Oh! I also have used a 2x magnifier, but this has to be set up properly to be
of any use. It is easy to alter the focusing point.

For the LX screens, you're probably thinking of the Beattie
 "Intenscreens"
(as I think they were called) ( http://www.intenscreen.com/ ). [Pentax
itself eventually produced three (I think it was) upgraded screens for
 the
LX that are just as good as the Beattie screens, IMHO, and the Pentax
tweezers were a whole lot better than the tweezers supplied by Beattie,
too.] However, it doesn't seem as if Beattie is making any screens for
 the
 Pentax DSLR's (or any DSLR's, I guess).

There are now "Katz Eye" screens now available for the Pentax DSLR's (
 http://www.katzeyeoptics.com/cat--Pentax-DSLR-s--cat_pentax.html ), if
 you
don't want to try grinding down a 35mm film body's screen for your DSLR
(and if you don't mind the expense too much).

Trying to scare people away from GFM 2007 are we?

I'm hoping he will fly into Calgary and then we can share the driving.
I think it would be a hoot to watch Cotty drive a large left hand drive
vehicle on the interstates...

Hi Kenneth

But if prism screens work in thses cameras, why haven't Pentax introduced them?
For my money I would rather spend even a
little more for a Pentax then give it to an "iffy" 3rd party.

Thanks Fred

A couple of years ago, I had to have my mirror & screen in my LX replaced as
the insulation around the mirror "liquidized - for
want of a better word" . My understanding at the time, was that Pentax no
longer carried screens and the replacement was a
Beattie.

BTW - the last time I looked at their site, the cost was $69 US, about $120.
cdn. so $100 US isn't that expensive relatively
speaking. Of course, with the amount of money I've spent on equipment during
the last few years, my wife thinks spending $10. on
film - especially now that I have a digital - is much too much. :-)

Also, there is nothing in my Pentax literature that suggests that I can change
a screen myself. Is it the same process as when
changing the screens in the LX?

Thanks again
