RE: The DA 50~200
If on digital, a new DA 50-200 is far more value for your money, I think, than any used 70-210 lens. Also my AF 80-320 appears to be very soft on digital (and I never liked it for film either). I use the DA 50-200 now a lot at the wide range not covered by a 70-210 or 80-320 lens. The only other AF zoom I have in the 50-70 range is a FA 28-70/4 but, how much I liked this lens for film, is for me now a bit disappointing on digital. RE: The Perfect Bag
For me, I've never had an occasion where I wanted a bag that my Domke F-2 did a bad job. Even when I don't want to carry much camera gear, I usually want to carry other stuff, and the F-2 gobbles it up. It also gobbles up the K10D, *ist D, 16-45, 50-200, 200/2.8, and 300/4.5 all at the same time, and that's just in the main compartment. Of course, I'm pretty lazy, so I pretty much keep the bag set up with the full kit and just grab it and go. I don't know how old mine is, but I'd guess at least ten years. It's weathering and aging very well. Even though it's black and canvas, it still doesn't show signs of all of the Georgia red clay it's absorbed at Road Atlanta. :-) My F-2 is about 10 years old too. When it was new I took it to Ethiopia and the strap turned a reddish colour, which I attribute to the red colour of the earth in the northern highlands. I consider it a badge of honour. Sometimes the F-2 is too big for my purposes - eg when I using one camera and one or 2 lenses on a day trip - which is why I would like a F-803 or similar. Since they're so difficult to find here now I compromised on a LowePro Reporter something-or-other. It's a good size, but there are some usability problems which the Domke doesn't have. For example, the LowePro uses 2 straps for closure, which is one too many for the size of bag. The clips require 2 hands to close, or some very awkward single-handed contortions, whereas the Domke clips are fantastically easy to open close with one hand. Also, I don't like the anatomically-curved shoulder strap. On the other hand, it is quite easy to clip onto my bike's handlebars to use as a bike bag. RE: The Perfect Bag
What I don't like about my Crumpler (Stunner) is that it slips from your shoulder if you hang it on one side. I had to glue some anti-slip rubber on the strap. RE: PESO: I'm invisible... - Chess players
Hi Peter Sometimes the comments are overrated including mine says the play on words of Juan ;-) As I told you before I like Juans work overall a lot. Beside skills you need courage and luck and the ability to foresee interesting situations and a talent to make contact with people IMHO. A lot of photographers would be to shy to go that near with a wide lens but if you do that in a city I'm pretty sure you will see a lot worth seeing/taking :-) -- I met some professional chess players yesterday at the Lindenhof in the oldest city part of Zurich and one of them invited me to come to the chess contest in the Canton of Berne to take portraits of the players. If I find some spare time, I will when they play near Zurich :-) Chess players on the Lindenhof: http://www.mypage.bluewin.ch/solicom/chessplayers.jpg greetings Markus ---Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Peter Lacus Sent: Wednesday, March 14, 2007 10:17 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: PESO: I'm invisible... Hello Markus, I would not call it a masterpiece because of the cut off feet and the distortions in the background and the ugly car on the right side but the expression on the faces and the moment itself are indeed very well seen and captured. Somehow the critics on some of Juans photos look as bit overrated to me if I have the right to say so. This is just my honest opinion. just some notes: - street photography requires different skills than for example landscape photography. One moment the composition may be winning, shortly after boring. Honestly I haven't even noticed the car until you've pointed it out. - if I wrote masterpiece that might be overrated, however I wrote little masterpiece ;-) - I'd be very happy if I managed to capture such a photo so from my standpoint it's not overrated at all... GFM Question: Charlotte to The Mountain
G'day Trendsetters, A quick question for those in the know. It's looking like I'll be arriving in Charlotte on May 31st, (overnight stay, then head up Friday morning). So I'm wondering, roughly how long it takes to drive from Charlotte to GFM (I-85 West to Gastonia, US 321 North)? 2 - 2.5 hours? RE: Velbon sherpa tripod question
Are you sure that tripod can be set in different angels? I just had a look at the Velbon site at the Sherpa series. Judging from the small pictures, there is a locking device on 550R and 750R, but not on the 250R. I have a Sherpa Pro CF-630, they are adjustable. The lock is a thingy that I must lift up. It ain't easy, and it ain't obvious. When the pod is standing it can't be done. I have to do it from start, before setting it up. A silly mechanism if you ask me. But it is there. Judging from the pictures there is a different locking mechanism at 550 and 750. I'm sorry that I can't be of more help. Re: GFM headcount thus far
It's never necessary to load Zoom Browser et al. onto your machine. The only part of the installation that you might have needed on an old machine (one running Windows 98, say) would have been drivers for whatver you were using to connect the camera to the computer. It would have been possible to just install that piece, but it's a whole lot easier to install everything. With Windows XP the drivers are already built in, so just plugging the cable in is enough. But that just makes the camera look like an additional disk drive - you won't get any file renaming unless you use a file upload utility. Zoom Browser is one possibility (although I wouldn't let you load it onto my machine, personally; in my experience it doesn't play well with others), but there is a pretty good upload-and-rename interface in Photoshop Elements. Of course in my wildest dreams I hope someone has a pc :) BUt be it mac or pc, dealing with a laptop thingy that is supposed to be a mouse is stress city - I can't control it... my hands just don't work that way. ann the ludite Cotty wrote: On 14/3/07, ann sanfedele, discombobulated, unleashed: I hope someone will let me use their adobe photoshop 5.0 and has or can let me load my canon software on their machine so I can actually participate in the contest. I simply insert a card into the reader and then drag and drop the files onto the hard drive. From there, I rename files (ReNamer For Mac) and view/adjust in CS. It would be easy enough to do this to anyone's pics on a memory card, I can do this for you if you like. Of course, you can adjust your own pics, it's plenty easy on a Mac. RE: The DA 50~200
Don't forget about the K45-125/4 thread, it's excellent from end to end on APS digital. Regarding the focal range, this post evolved from someone who SPECIFICALLY stated they wanted 70-210 and CONSTANT aperture to which the DA 50-200 does not meet the requirement. I think you are mistaken to say that a new DA5-200 is far more value than any used 70-210 lens because there were many many different 70-210 lenses over the years, some of them are excellent and very inexpensive, and if and when Pentax goes FF, you could use them FF, you cant with the DA lens which is slower and variable aperture too, both negatives compared to the many fixed F4.0 or faster 70/80-200/210 lenses that were made over the years jco -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Henk Terhell Sent: Thursday, March 15, 2007 4:07 AM To: 'Pentax-Discuss Mail List' Subject: RE: The DA 50~200 If on digital, a new DA 50-200 is far more value for your money, I think, than any used 70-210 lens. Re: Macro Lenses
The format is irrelevant to magnification. I was giving an example. If you understood what I said, you'd understand that it was the same thing ... said another way: - The size of the DSLR format is 16x24. If the magnification is 1:1, the size of the subject and the size of the format will be the same. So at 1:1 magnification, a Pentax DSLR will image a 16x24mm subject area. - The size of the 35mm format is 24x36. If the magnification is 1:1, the size of the subject and the size of the format will be the same. So at 1:1 magnification, a Pentax 35mm SLR will image a 24x36mm subject area. etc The key thing is that the number of pixels or the density of the film is irrelevant to magnification, which is what the example was attempting to show. Now I remember I had that problem in the past, and I recently reloaded Windows, so I probably forgot to do whatever it was I had to do to show it as a valid copy, but with my old head, I can not recall what that was. So because my memory is bad, they want me to pay them $149. Fuck Microsoft! Actually the CD I have is an OEM version, and I think I have to change the serial number to the valid one that came on the computer, but I am tired of having to fuck with it. The sick thing about it is that the only reason I run MS at all is so I can use PS. Well, I ain't doing all that much photography lately, maybe it is time to go back to linux.
