Lightroom and DNG

2007-03-31 Thread Patrick Genovese
I've been using lightroom for a couple of weeks now and have not yet
figured out how to compress dng files. If i shoot pef and use LR to
convert to dng the resulting dng files are compressed but if i shoot
dng LR does not seem to compress them after you modify them. So far
the only way of compressing dng files I have found is to open them in
ACR make a small change and click done.

Has anyone come across a better method ?

Run them through Adbobe DNG Converter with compression selected. This
will do batch jobs (up to a directory at a time).

Minimal impact on me mate. I think if you're doing a sign like that,
could be one of several ways. Straight on in my book has to be dead
straight on with verticals vertical and horizontals horizontal. Further
away, longer lens, fill the frame, 90 deg to subject if poss, correct
angles if not. Or, maybe a wide angle almost directly underneath and to
one side, nice wacky angle. Or maybe with the sign in relation to the
building or a person. Framing is everything in a shot like this.

Look at the first pic up in this gallery:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/6510837.stm

In itself, the Queen sanding alone with the onlookers above is a nice
shot. You can bet your sweet bippy that either side of her there are
throngs of body guards, hosts, more onlookers etc etc. Selective framing
has given the shot an edge that it would not have had otherwise.

This technique is easily applied to the neon sign. The framing you
present is neither here nor there to me. Too much empty space top and
bottom, not 'straight' enough, a little obscured by building detail.

Otherwise (what did the Romans ever do for us) nice shot ;-)

RE: PESO:Tamron SP70-150mm 2.8 on the K10D 3 test shots

2007-03-31 Thread Markus Maurer
Hi Jim
Are you looking for the soft focus feature or just for a fast Tamron SP
zoom?
The soft focus ring settings 1-3 are nice for full portrait shots or flower
close-ups with uniform backgrounds. If the background is too busy the bokeh
with the soft focus ring engaged is harsh and unpleasant . I will have to
experiment a bit with that feature on the K10D, I last used it on film and
only liked about 1 out of 10 soft focus shots :-(

The slower non SP 70-150mm 3.5 Tamron is very inexpensive here but I can't
say anything about it's quality and if it is similar to the SP one.
The same is true for the SP 70-210 3.5/4 zoom lens. Again a heavy but well
built lens.

Greetings
Markus

Re: bags bags bags

2007-03-31 Thread Nick Wright
I have the Stealth Reporter 200.

I think it should carry your list fairly easily.

When I used it, it carried my EOS10D with 17-40/4L attached, the
70-200/4L, a 50mm, big flash, and quite a number of little things.

Now I use it as my portable lighting bag.

My only complaint is that it sticks out too far away from my body
while shooting.

Also I have the version where there are two buckles on the top flap,
they've since gone to only one buckle on the Stealth series. And I
don't know what else they've changed.

On 3/30/07, Godfrey DiGiorgi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I have more freekin' camera bags than I know what to do with.

But I don't have a good bag that will hold the K10D plus DA14, DA21,
FA28, FA43 and DA70, with one lens mounted on the camera, and still
 a) have enough room to carry all the other junk I often carry
(batteries, cards, remote, notebook, book to read, cell phone, Epson
P2000 etc ... NO laptop) and b) carry all that and still work out of
it. I have bags that will FIT all that but are useless to work out
of, bags that are wonderful to work out of but only carry two lenses
comfortably ... etc etc. My Domkes *almost* do it but the F6 is a
little too tight, the F3 is too deep, the F2 gets too large, etc etc
 etc.

So I began a search for that next 'perfect bag' to fulfill those
requirements a couple of weeks ago. After looking at a lot of bags, I
think I'm coming down to a decision. The Lowepro Stealth Reporter
series design works well and they have a wide range of sizes. The
D100 is too small ... I tried one of them, stuff doesn't fit. The
D200 looks like it might work and the D300 really has to work ... but
the D200 and D300 are out of stock locally so I can't try my stuff in
them. I *will not* buy another bag that I do not fit my stuff into
physically and see how it works. The other two are the Crumpler
(famous for the worlds *worst* website... not to mention stupid bag
names) 6 Million Dollar Home and 7 Million Dollar Home. But
nobody carries them in stock locally.

My local dealer told me the other day that one of his distributors
does carry Crumpler and maybe he had a '6 Million Dollar Home' that
he could bring in for me to look at. If I don't call you today,
figure he doesn't have one. He didn't call. So this morning I called
BH and asked if it would be all right if I ordered *four* bags ...
both Crumplers and both Lowepros ... and then returned three. It's
worth the shipping charges to get the right one, to me. They said no
problem, so four bags are on their way to me now...

Of course, my local dealer calls me back about an hour after
 that. ;-) Our distributor didn't have a 6, but he had a 5 and a 7,
 dropped them off...

The 5 Million Dollar Home is obviously too small so I didn't bother
looking at it much, but it does seem nicely made. The 7 Million
Dollar Home is very nice. Everything fit the way I wanted it to and
is well protected, and there's a ton more room both above the gear
and in pockets to handle all the other incidentals. It's nicely
styled ... trim and not an obvious camera bag ... and looks to be
well made. Blue with an orange interior isn't quite my thing but it
seems a very workable bag. I don't know whether the 6 will actually
have enough room, based on how everything fits in the 7 ... It's
about two inches smaller both in length and height, but the same
 front to back.

Anyone else using these bags? What do you carry in them? how do you
like them? Please ... only the Lowepro Stealth Reporter D200-D300 and
the Crumpler 6/7 Million Dollar Home bags. I don't want to even think
about anything else at this point.

Once I settle on this one, I'm going to do a fire sale on all the
 ones I don't use... !

the only way of compressing dng files I have found is to open them in
ACR make a small change and click done.

Has anyone come across a better method ?

Run them through Adbobe DNG Converter with compression selected. This
will do batch jobs (up to a directory at a time).

Adam supplied the first way. Two others:

2- open them all in ACR, select all, click Save x files, and set
the output to be DNG in another directory

3- select all in the LR grid view, choose Export, DNG format, then
replace the originals.

Most convenient way I've found to end up with compressed DNG is to
capture in PEF format and import into Lightroom with automatic DNG
conversion. I have it save the PEFs off into the archive storage and
generate the standard previews, add basic metadata and keywords, all
at the same time.

To run it on both PC and my Ibook, i'll need to buy it twice.

Now to decide which platform. I spend more time on the PC as far as

Hi Dave,
Assuming you have installed the icc profiles from the Epson web site,
you should have four choices for premium glossy in the profiles menu
of your print with preview window. These are: premium glossy, premium
glossy photo icc, premium glossy best photo icc, and premium glossy
RPM photo icc. The last one is for printing at the very best quality.
If you choose this you have to click on advanced in the printer
settings option in your print box. Then you choose photo rpm. That's
the highest resolution print setting. Have fun.

I collect Tamron SP Adaptall-2 lenses and already have most of the
zooms. I'm quite interested in this specific lens, partly because of
its reputation as a very sharp fast conventional optic and also
because I'd like to experiment with the progressive variable
softening feature (I already have all of the Pentax soft focus
lenses). Unfortunately I've never seen one for sale - either it was
rare to begin with or those who own one like it too much to sell it!

The soft focus ring settings 1-3 are nice for full portrait shots

 the bokeh
with the soft focus ring engaged is harsh and unpleasant . I will
 have to
experiment a bit with that feature on the K10D, I last used it on

only liked about 1 out of 10 soft focus shots :-(

Thanks for this info. It's consistent with my results using the
Pentax soft focus lenses as well. But there are certain images where
the spherical aberration (I think that's what it is) of a soft focus
lens adds just the right dreamy/foggy look.

The slower non SP 70-150mm 3.5 Tamron is very inexpensive here but
 I can't
say anything about it's quality and if it is similar to the SP one.

The reports on the IQ of the regular version are not as good, and of
course it's slower.

The same is true for the SP 70-210 3.5/4 zoom lens. Again a heavy
 but well
 built lens.

Yes, I already have this one, as well as the even more highly
regarded SP 70-210 f3.5 constant aperture version which I recently
found on eBay. The latter is said to be the best MF zoom ever made
in this range. I'm looking forward to comparing it with my Pentax A
70-210 f4 when I get the time.

It's amazing how inexpensive most of these lenses are - it seems that
nobody is interested in MF zooms any more. Ah well - the joys of

That's odd. Is this on you iBook or your PC?

Anyway, looking at those options they are all using the Premium Glossy
Paper profile, the PHOTO, BSTPHOTO, PHOTORPM are quality level
options (in order of quality from lowest to highest). Photo RPM is
supposed to be the best of them, but IMHO it just uses more ink with
little apparent quality benefit.

Personally I tend to use the Best Photo (BSTPHOTO) quality option.

For what it's worth here are a couple of screen captures from my system.

This one is where I select the paper profile in the Print with

 Hi Jim
Are you looking for the soft focus feature or just for a fast
 Tamron SP
 zoom?

I collect Tamron SP Adaptall-2 lenses and already have most of the
zooms. I'm quite interested in this specific lens, partly because of
its reputation as a very sharp fast conventional optic and also
because I'd like to experiment with the progressive variable
softening feature (I already have all of the Pentax soft focus
lenses). Unfortunately I've never seen one for sale - either it was
rare to begin with or those who own one like it too much to sell
it! ;)

The soft focus ring settings 1-3 are nice for full portrait shots
 or flower
close-ups with uniform backgrounds. If the background is too busy
 the bokeh
with the soft focus ring engaged is harsh and unpleasant . I will
 have to
experiment a bit with that feature on the K10D, I last used it on
 film and
only liked about 1 out of 10 soft focus shots :-(

Thanks for this info. It's consistent with my results using the
Pentax soft focus lenses as well. But there are certain images where
the spherical aberration (I think that's what it is) of a soft focus
lens adds just the right dreamy/foggy look.

The slower non SP 70-150mm 3.5 Tamron is very inexpensive here but
 I can't
say anything about it's quality and if it is similar to the SP one.

The reports on the regular version are not as good, and of course
it's slower.

Ah well - the joys of
collecting are even greater when the cost is reasonable.

Regards, Jim

Being brutally honest, I must state that all the images could benefit from
better light - around sunrise/or sunset. I've bypassed shots because the
lighting was too harsh.
Also I'd suggest a different perspective in some of your close up shots to
eliminate strips of sky that are distracting in themselves.

The area looks like a good spot for shooting.

If you choose this you have to click on advanced in the printer

Epson used to sell Archival Matte, then changed the name to
Enhanced Matte, and has now renamed it again to Ultra Premium
Presentation Matte. Use the SPR2400 - Enhanced Matte for that one
with the Matte black ink. Epson Heavyweight Matte is a different
paper with a profile that matches its name. A PK extension on the
profile name means that you want to print on these papers with the
Photo Black ink installed.

Current R2400 installation for the Premium Glossy paper is the
SPR2400 PremiumGlossy with the Photo Black ink

Each of these profiles are specific to how you have the resolution set

If you select Best Photo resolution, you should use the profile with
BSTPHOTO in it.
For normal Photo resolution, the PHOTO profile.

Incredible cars all over the place. Of course I
took a bunch of photos. If your into vintage cars,
especially American Muscle Cars, Here's a web gallery
I made you might want to peek at ( first time I used this feature in
Photoshop,
not too bad really). Most of the cars sold between $30 and
$60 grand on Friday's Auctions...

FS: Lightning-fast Delkin CardBus 32 CF PCMCIA reader

2007-03-31 Thread John Celio
For Sale: Delkin Cardbus 32 adapter for CF cards

If your computer has a PCMCIA card slot, this adapter is the fastest way
I've found for downloading your data off of Compact Flash (I II)cards.

Delkin's site:
http://www.delkin.com/products/adapters/cardbus/

The item for sale is a couple years old, but is in excellent condition. It
has lived in my laptop's PC slot pretty much since the day I got it.

When it came out, I tested the speed of this device compared to a USB 2
reader (SanDisk 8-in-1) and a standard PCMCIA reader (cheap Lexar model).
The Cardbus 32 adapter was many times faster than the cheap PCMCIA reader,
and also faster than the USB 2 reader. I can't remember the specific
results, but I bought the reader that day after seeing how well it
performed.

Price: US $37 obo
Shipping in the US should be around $6 (I charge actual shipping, so if it's
less I'll give you a refund). For international shipping, give me your
address and I'll find out the cost.

Only the adapter is included in this sale. I lost the original plastic
case, and drivers are available from Delkin's website.

Thanks!,
John

FS: Tripod legs

2007-03-31 Thread John Celio
For Sale: Promaster SystemPro 1 Professional Tripod

I've owned these legs for about two or three years now. They're good,
sturdy legs for just about any size camera, though you will need to get a
head for it.

It shows some signs of use, such as scratches around the leg locks and other
parts, but there is no other damage to the tripod. I replaced the original
center column years ago with the shorter one Promaster made as an accessory
(primarily to reduce weight), but can't find the original one any more.

Features:

- Sturdy aluminum alloy construction
- 3 leg angle settings for shooting versatility
- Quick release leg locks for rapid setup and adjustment
- Self leveling feet with retractable spikes (also good for spearing fish or
fending off attackers)
- Padded hand/shoulder grips for added comfort
- Maximum Height (center column extended): 55 (with current center column)

From Promaster's website:
http://tinyurl.com/dnxcr

A poorly-edited photo of my personal tripod-inspector:
http://www.neovenator.com/special/tripod_inspector.jpg
(I still don't have photoshop reinstalled on my machine after doing a
complete hard drive wipe and fresh windows install last week, so I used
www.snipshot.com's web-based photo editor)

Price: US $67 obo
Shipping: I'm *guessing* US shipping will be in the $15-$20 range, but I'm
not sure of the final package weight. If you give me your address, I can
give you a more accurate cost on monday. Same goes for international
shipping, but I'm sure it'll cost more.

papers, matte finish, for the Epson R2400:

http://homepage.mac.com/godders/Epson-papers-8.5x11Matte2400.jpg

The last two are the ones that are specifically for photographic
work: Premium Presentation Paper Matte and Ultra Premium
Presentation Paper Matte. These are renamed from Epson Heavyweight
Matte and Epson Enhanced Matte and still point to the pages under
those names:

   http://homepage.mac.com/godders/EpsonMPH.jpg

and

   http://homepage.mac.com/godders/EpsonEEM.jpg

I use both of these, as well as the Velvet Fine Art paper (available
in 8.5x11 and 13x19 sizes). I use the Heavyweight Matte for signage
and most stuff that is more text/informational, and Enhanced Matte
for photographs. In testing, I find the Enhanced Matte does a better
job at tonal separation and color brightness.

Velvet Fine Art is even nicer for photographs, with a nicer surface
finish excellent saturation, but is kinda expensive for everyday use.

Hi David,
Looking at your Print with Preview screen it's obvious that you

Anyway, looking at those options they are all using the Premium Glossy

options (in order of quality from lowest to highest). Photo RPM is
supposed to be the best of them, but IMHO it just uses more ink with
 little apparent quality benefit.

Personally I tend to use the Best Photo (BSTPHOTO) quality option.

The top flap is held closed by Velcro as well as a snap buckle strap.
Even the velcro alone is pretty good at keeping the bag closed, I've had

the buckle)

Zipper's are unnecessary and slow you down when shooting.

On pics with a lot of detail, RPM makes a difference, particularly in
large sizes. but only on glossy or luster papers. I print a lot of 11
x17 on Premium Luster paper. You can see the difference there. On
matte papers, there is no noticeable difference. (I don't even think
they have an RPM profile for Velvet Fine Art, although you can choose
it in the Print dialog box.) I've found that the specific ICC
profiles make a bit of difference in rendering, particularly with

Re: One more 2400 profile question

2007-03-31 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Figured I might as well: I downloaded all three packages of the
latest paper profiles from Epson ... Glossy, Matte and Fine Art.
Adding the profiles adds Photo and Bst Photo versions for EEM, HM,
and VFA, and Photo, BstPhoto, RPM for Lustre and Glossy. (others too
but I don't use anything other than EEM, HM, and VFA ordinarily)

I just printed three tests in Photo, Best Photo comparing against my
old use of the previous profiles with Best Photo quality. On HM, EEM
and VFA ... differences are extremely small to my eye. Which is
better ... hard to say. I'll wait a day and see how they dry down.

I still haven't printed a page of glossy or luster with this
printer ... ! Bought a box of Premium Luster 8.5x11, though, maybe
I'll try it someday. ;-)

What does RPM stand for again?

(I print primarily A3 size paper in EEM. Been working with some
beautiful 11x17 paper: Somerset Enhanced Photo Velvet ... but it's
expensive as heck. Same stock as VFA, with an uncoated surface. Sexy
stuff. I've got some new fine art paper on the way to play with.)

RE: PESO:Tamron SP70-150mm 2.8 on the K10D 3 test shots

2007-03-31 Thread Markus Maurer
Hi Jim
I have a second Tamron SP 70-150mm F2.8 in quite good condition but the soft
focus ring is broken somehow. If I engage the ring the zoom only produced a
blank exposure with my film cameras. With the ring set to off position the
lens works fine . I don't know if that can be repaired easily?
The seller did not tell me that and when I noticed it was too late. If you
are able to fix that fault and would not mind the shipping cost
from Switzerland you could have it for a low price or in exchange for some
other photographic equipment like Tamron KA adaptall2 adapter.
I have a spare 2x Tamron SP tele converter as well and a manual Pentax
adaptall2 adapter with it.

I will make some tests with the Tamron 70-210 SP 3.5/4 zoom + SP 2x
teleconverter on the K10D for bird shots and hope for a usable
Background rendering, the SP 500mm Tamron mirror lens was just not good in
this regard.

Do you have any experience with the Tamron SP 28-80mm 1:3.5-4.2 27A zoom?
How well it does on the Pentax DSLR at 28mm?

Thanks and greetings
Markus

 Hi Jim

Ah well - the joys of
collecting are even greater when the cost is reasonable.

I have a 200 and a 500. Only problem is when they are full, they are
hard to carry over the shoulder and the top strap is offset and tend

Other than that, great bags. I now use the Lowepro mini trekker,
easier ot carry.
