Fantastic, if slightly creepy at the same time. :)

How's it creepy?

I imagine that, if I were a child that young (I'm guessing the kid is pretty
little), in an empty space that large, I would at some point start to feel
very much alone and scared. Now, I figure there were adults nearby when the
photo was taken, but from what is shown, the scene seems eerily empty except
for the kid.

So, it feels a little frightening to my inner child, I guess. Perhaps
creepy was the wrong word.

Didn't know you were a Hiroshige fan, Bob. One of the very nice ladies

It was great fun, and at one point she said she might give me one, but
she is quite elderly and somewhat forgetful/scattered at times, and
I'd hate to think I was taking advantage of her.

Still...

I've found a couple of her works online. In this one, you can see some
Hiroshige influence:

Lens identification

2008-10-15 Thread Subash
hi,

i need help to identify a lens i bought some time back. it's 24mm/f.28
lens and goes by the name "Fotomat Series 35 MC". doesn't have an "A"
setting and looks to be made of metal though it doesn't have the solid
feel of the 'K' lenses.

googled a bit and found similar lenses on ebay for the olympus mount.
but these don't give any idea of where or when they were made.

also found out that fotomat was a chain of 1-day development photo
kiosks in the US in the 1980s which was subsequently taken over by
konica. but nowhere any mention of them having made lenses.

got the lens very cheap, so there was no logical reason not to buy it.
so would appreciate any info you may have.

thanks and regards, subash

Bob,

I've visited these galleries several times now, looking at them
different orders, and I've come to the conclusion that because of
this, your bandwidth usage is probably up. You're welcome.

Now, about the gallery/sequence, I just don't get along with your lead
photo as a lead photo. While I understand the idea of the establishing
shot, I don't feel this is a strong enough image for the subject
introduction. I prefer image #13 in the original Tanneries gallery as
the lead-in, both for its wider view and its stronger composition.

The next shot brings us into the action. I would like to see a little
more pop in it, but I also see the charm of the limited range.

Number three is a corker of a shot. Are you trying to establish a
process illustration through this gallery (this happens, then this
happens, then they eat, then they load the donkey), and if so, is this
in its proper place?

The fourth image, I feel, is the weaker of the bunch. I could see
replacing it with the first image in the Tanneries group, which is a
=very= good photo, the boy assuming a pose that is at once
contemporary and almost Renaissance. I am put in mind of Botticelli.
Not anything specific of his, mind you, just in the way the hands are
held, and the head tilted reverently, surrounded by the arch.

Next we have the requisite NatGeo red shirt guys, and they are better
served by the other grouping of them, number 31 in the Tanneries
gallery. I'm a big fan of the "triangle up" composition, and the light
appears a touch better.

No arguments with the next two photos, though putting them together
might detract, as they seem to my eye to be very similar shots. The
second, with the yellow, is the stronger of the two.

The guy in the short doorway should maybe lead to an interior shot,
like #29 in Tanneries.

The last photo in the gallery is a good one, but I do agree something
stronger is necessary. #35 or #36 are good possibles.

Finishing with the ass's ass, while funny, might be a little egregious.

Hope this helps. Feel free to shout me down or ignore me, but whatever
you decide, best of luck in your pursuit.

Doug

Re: Fez - candidate essay for the RPS. Opinions please.

2008-10-15 Thread Stan Halpin

I went back and looked at the whole set in that first edit.

For what it is worth, I would still end with #7 from the reduced set.
Number 8 and 9 I would delete. In their place I would use 9299-213 in
position #7 and A039901 in #8 position.

Oh, and I would choose -171 vs. -174 for the second position.

The two others that really caught my eye were 9299-132 and -142.

Back in the day, when I would occasionally do slide shows (as in,
light shining through transparency film, focused by a lens onto a
white screen) for climbing clubs, cycling clubs, church groups,
family and/or friends, I would vary the pace considerably from image
to image and section to section. Some shots deserve examination,
maybe discussion. Others are better placed in a linear virtual
montage (i.e., 1.0-1.5 secs per image). As I have been working on
book layouts, I find that I have been varying the "pace" through
sizing and positioning the images. As I understand what you are
doing, with a metronomic delivery of images, it is much more
challenging as each image needs to stand on its own as well as
fitting in with the whole.

will need to lose some pictures, but I will take part in an RPS
workshop later this month where I will discuss what is strongest -
your views are important to me though (I sound like a call centre!).

My main feeling about this one is that it really needs a stronger
clincher to close the set.

Fire away!

Thanks,
Bob

PESO 2008 - 153 - GDG

2008-10-15 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi

Back to the present (or near present...) ...

This one is from the "Crypt Church" in Gloucester, which I visited
with my friend Richard Day when visiting in September. We stumbled
into it and shot for a while, were supposed to be back the next day
when I could have a tripod along with me, etc etc ... but the docent
didn't show up and open the church the next day and the opportunity
was lost. Oh well. At least I got a few good exposures hand-held when
we did gain access

(And yes: I have to find out the correct name for the church ... )

Dave Brooks asked -

When you mention crop the tree line on the RHS of this one, do you
feel the fisherman is out of place here, or do you think a tighter
crop to him would be better.

I mentioned the RHS tree line as a reference as to how far down to do a
horizontal crop.

And I wouldn't change to a tighter crop on the fisherman.

Thanks for all the comments thus far.

Thanks Ann. It's one of about 30 photos I made that day; I hadn't
printed this particular one before. Several of them are of a similar

working on a folio set, or maybe two, culled further from this group.

Backing up with out a spotter

2008-10-15 Thread David J Brooks
Well, after 3 attempts at getting a Maxtor 4 lite to format on the
ibook, i gave up. (My other two Maxtors worked/work well though.)

I bought a 160 Gig Seagate today, and it formatted fine, so the double
back up is now on, and i can, hopefully, safely remove my oddles of
photos and get some space back.

Two external HD's and DVD's, so hopefully one of these survives. :-)

And it's indeed so easy. Put cam on tripod, do a series of shots from 20
(or 30 if it's really dark) to 1 secs, convert the RAWs to TIF, shove
them into Photomatix. A little scaling, sharpening and tone correction.
That's all there is to it.

Ralf, I admire your prowess - not just the nuts and bolts technical
stuff, but your eye..

And your subject matter - the grittiness of the industrial landscape.

When I was shooting with my LX and still travelling to places where I
felt safe being out
side with a tripod and expensive gear _alone_ I did bracket extensively
and also let the
excellent LX metre do it for me... I did some night stuff I was happy
with - but not a lot...
I can count on my fingers the night shots I took that I liked. Not my
genre :-) although
I did use one night shot back in the 1980's as the post card for one of
my shows - It's on
line but it is a low res scan and pretty awful - I wouldn't point it out
here.

You really ought to try it some day, Ann. With the usual festivities
ahead, have a go at the illuminations on your Main Street. You'll be
surprising us with your very own night-shot Xmas card in no time.

Ralf

There are a few on the list that are probably bent over with giggles on
that suggestion for me for
oh so many reasons...Frank, Mark Roberts, Godders and Bill Robb, for
instance :-)
(About as likely as Mike Johnson photographing kittens and flowers -
not sure if you were on
list long enough to remember him or not - but you may have read his
online mag).

But, seriously, just to address the nighttime aspect and the physical,
I can't carry a tripod at all anymore,my eyes are extremely sensitive to
glare so even being out at night is uncomfortable... I can look
comfortably at photos such as yours to see that kind of scene - couldn't
look at it
in real life without considerable discomfort. My old eyes can't shift
from dark to light easily...

As to the giggles "Main street" doesn't really exist in the middle of
New York City.
I've made Xmas cards that are comical - but only for commercial
purposes these days . Very rarely I might send someone a New Year's
Card who sent me a holiday card of one kind or another and I never see
in person anymore. And they guys know I'm an atheist , too :-)

I'm chatty because I just work up from a nap -- sorry if this was TMI

What a great shot! I keep telling people that the trick to good shots at
GFM is being there when the light is right and this photo really shows
that. I love how you've left the foreground looking dark and brooding.
Most people probably would have brightened it up and, I think, lost the
emotion in this shot. The highest compliment I can pay is that I've kept
coming back to this photo repeatedly all day. Fantastic.

Incidentally, I've booked myself onto a workshop on the 26th of this
month to review this essay and get feedback before submitting it later
this year or early next for assessment for the distinction.

Interestingly the workshop is looking not just at Travel but also at
Visual Art. I don't know what Visual Art is, so I thought I'd better
check. According to the RPS "The Visual Art Group was founded in
January 1921 "to foster the interest and advancement in all matters
relating to Pictorial Photography". ".

Apart from the pioneers such as Stieglitz and Emerson, whom I admire
tremendously, I have always tried to steer clear of pictorial
photography, so it should make for an interesting day. The RPS Visual
Art Group has a website:

2008-10-15 Thread Bob W
I agree - I think a portrait of one of the workers would be very
effective as a clincher for the tanneries shots. Unfortunately I
haven't got one - I wasn't shooting to a plan, so I never thought of
it. I lie awake at night kicking myself for not getting a portrait of
a knackered-looking worker, but we live and learn. I will continue the
search for a clincher though.

Thanks for your comments - very helpful. And the flattery too :o)

Re: PESO: Empire into nation

2008-10-15 Thread Bob Sullivan
I think NATION is a perfectly appropriate change, but revisions can
get troubling.

At services this Yom Kipur, half the congregation had newly revised
prayer books,
and half had the older copies. The Reform Judaism governing body decided that
the prayers should be gender neutral, so all references to God as
Father, Lord, King, etc.
were expunged. Half the congregation was reading 'O Lord', the other
half reading
'O sovereign one'. Sometimes you ought to just let the metafors stand.

Thanks Ken,
I carried 2 big gray lenses on camera (FA28-70/2.8 & FA80-210) and
talked to the Police woman on the corner as soon as I got there.
She let me stay on the traffic island in the middle of the street. :-)
It always pay to be nice to the officers.

Christine,
You should check next year.
They went up LaSalle St. to North Ave, then along the park and
Sheridan Rd. to Foster.
They came back down Broadway, Clark, and Sedgwick before coming down Wells.
The locations just off of Ontario give me some options.
You can cover milepost ~3 until the traffic gets really heavy,
then shift 1 block west and get mile 12.
Next year I'll have to add milepost 20 or something.

Dave, again I don't see a reason to include the blank sky in this image. A
crop along the tree line at the RH side will improve this one too ... IMHO.

Re: Fez - candidate essay for the RPS. Opinions please.

Bob,
All the Fez photos are very accomplished and the series are interesting.
I think the problem with the clincher is not having a very close photo.
Perhaps some link of portrait would be too cliche, but I yearn for a
closer contact.
Of course, this is not so easy to get...
Thanks for posting these. I always learn by watching what you're doing.
