FML...
The auction I was watching for the 67II kit ended this afternoon. I was going to take a look with 10 or 15 minutes to spare and if it hadn't gone past my budget I was going to put in a bid. Well I got caught up in a last-minute job at work and opened my laptop... precisely 1 minute too late. A 67II with AE prism finder, wooden grip and 135mm macro lens went for NZ$800 which I guess was the reserve as there was only one bidder. I expected it to go for a lot more than that but to be honest I am a little out-of-touch with the secondhand market right now. Not that 67IIs come up for sale every other day in these parts. I expected it to sell for much more than that. I've wanted a 67II for years and my old 6x7 is in need of repair. I'm consoling myself with the possibility that I'd have probably lost a bidding war anyway. Just annoyed that someone else was the sole bidder instead of me. I guess I'll just buy that new washing machine instead. And go out and take some pictures with my old 6x7. Re: Sort of OT: Photoshop vs.GIMP
It's sometimes a matter of what you've become accustomed to. I find PhotoShop and the ACR interface much more user friendly than Lightroom. I also need some PhotoShop tools on a regular basis. I do quite a bit of cloning and compositing with for some clients, and I'd rather not have to switch from one tool to another. Finally, I really like Bridge, the PhotoShop adjunct, as an organizational tool. It conforms to my system, rather than me having to work within its limits. I do have GIMP on my computer (in portable form from www.portableapps.com) but I don't use it. No need, really. I do use GIMP only if I want to download a picture from a photo forum, edit it some and post it back to let the author know how I would have done it. For that GIMP is (almost) sufficient. Most recently I learned that whatever function in GIMP does rotation is very weak in keeping picture sharpness (unlike LightRoom). The GIMP that I have says that it is color managed. Well, whatever I saved from it, indeed looks just like I want it to look, no color management problems. In a nutshell - I do recommend LightRoom (or any other complete photographic workflow system) as it works good, does what I want and unlike PhotoShop is streamlined and clear in function and interface. Geso Photos from this years plowing and thrashing demonstrations.
Hi gang. Wednesday was the annual demo at the Lewis farm near the Markham fair grounds. Good turn out as usual, about 150-200 people. Weather was good, a bit O/C, but that's good for photography, and a bit cool, around +20 C. I took about 330-350 photos, and these are the ones i like the best from the bunch. I'm sure i could have added 20-30 more, but these will do for now. I'll do some individual postings once i get the 3-4 really good ones picked and converted. http://www.caughtinmotion.com/2009-thrashing/album/index.html Some potential fair entries also in the bunch. D200 and D2H, 18-70 and VR 70-200 f2.8, (all shot as Raw files)The 80 pictures were exported to email and jalbum made, so no post processing on them yet, so they may look a tad flat colour wise. For Windows users the latest Photoshop Elements runs about $100, about $150 when bundled with Premier Elements for video production. I do not know about Mac version pricing. You can also find a 1 or 2 generation old version bundled with a Wacom Bamboo table for $100 which is an excellent buy in my opinion. How to lose a sale
I was in a shoe shop today, looking at shoes (surprise, surprise). I had my M8 hanging from my shoulder. After staring disconsolately at the footwear on offer I heard somebody muttering something in my ear. It was a shop assistant. Is that old thing an SLR or a rangefinder? It's a rangefinder Does it still work?, he said, laughing. He was really taking the piss out of the camera. What do you mean? In this digital day and age! Does manual film still work? It's digital Digital? That?! It likes a really old thing. Is it a Rioch (sic)? A what? A Rioch No, it's a Leica Man! That looks so old! I can't imagine how he expected to get a sale out of me after that, even if they'd had any shoes I wanted to buy. Just to keep it on topic, as I was walking away shaking my head in disbelief I heard him tell one of his colleagues that he had a Pentax K1000. My friend Jack played with Suska down at JJ's again last night. I was not at all happy about how the K20 was doing with the available light so I used my flash with a big lumiquest diffuser. It was my first time using the 540 in wireless pttl mode. I guess that it's a small stage, or maybe the sax player just likes to wander around. I missed some great shots of his interacting with some of the people in the bar, but I did get one shot that I like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/3748198353/in/set-72157621788958518/ -- The first step is learning to take great photos, the second step is learning to throw away ones that are merely good. That's my poor writing, then. He wasn't expressing an interest in the camera, he was making fun of it. Not that I give a damn what anyone thinks about the camera, but it's not the way for a salesperson to approach a customer. People quite often ask about it. Just a couple of weeks ago a doorman in a bookshop asked about it, and we had quite a long and pleasant conversation. It's one thing to express a genuine interest, quite another what this guy today was doing. Bob As you relate the incident, it would have elicited a grin from me and maybe even a sale. Just annoyed that someone else was the sole bidder instead of me. semi OT - Presenting my revised photo web page
I mean, it IS photography , and there are a ton of photos taken with a Pentax LX or KX . I did a new banner (newnew, as I slightly changed the one from a day or two ago ) and simplified the front page... reorganized a lot... more to do, but except for possibly puting a link on the index page to my cafepress store directly in the footer and using html to name names of other sites instead of the http:// blah blah stuff (I do know HOW to do this - but have other things more pressing at the moment ) Got inspired by both Doug and Christine to finally get this done - and the fact that I'm getting a bit of help with rent now so I'm not so crazed listing things on eekbay has helped. sooo have a look-see , gang, on my monitor with my settings in Firefox, explorer and even old Netscape it looks right to me. I should look at it on other machines . Appreciate any comments and certainly if you see a link or a stupid typo let me know -- but only if you happen on it or have no life and look at everything :-) I would like it if the page stretched -- but unless I got heavily into css that isn't going to happen because of the preferred theme I'm using on the site...or the smugmug techies get around to a stretchy black background style. so here you are! ann sanfedele photography at: http://annsan.smugmug.com ann -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Sort of OT: Photoshop vs.GIMP
And what is price for Photoshop Elements? For Windows users the latest Photoshop Elements runs about $100, about $150 when bundled with Premier Elements for video production. I do not know about Mac version pricing. You can also find a 1 or 2 generation old version bundled with a Wacom Bamboo table for $100 which is an excellent buy in my opinion. These are retail store prices and can probably be beat with diligent internet searches. PSE for Mac OS X is around $90 depending upon where you buy it. I would NOT buy an outdated version ... it limits which version of Camera Raw you can use with it, which limits RAW conversion capabilities ... depending upon what camera you are using, you might not need the latest Camera Raw, of course, but the other thing is that in PSE you only have the 'basic' mode Camera Raw operation without all the more sophisticated capabilities. Enough for a lot of work but less convenient. The Mac OS X version of PSE does not include the 'album' image management components that the Windows version does, IIRC. This, to me, is a major lack ... no different from PS CSx, but one of the reasons I am so big on Lightroom. To me, the major editing deficiencies in PSE itself are a lack of color management options (not important for many, I'm sure) and the lack of the Curves tool palette (essential to my PS editing methodology). I'm not sure whether the latest version has Curves tools. I also don't know how sophisticated the current version is regards layers and 16bit editing capabilities. Layers in particular (one of the primary ways of implementing any and all forms of compositing including HDR, creative localized sharpening, etc) is one of the major reasons why I go to Photoshop nowadays since everything else is handled so well by Lightroom for my kind of photographic editing. -- Godfrey www.gdgphoto.com www.flickr.com/photos/gdgphoto www.twitter.com/godfreydigiorgi -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Whats a DS worth these days?
Recent completed listings on Ebay for the DS body-only show auctions completed successfully in and around the $205-220 range. The 18-55 kit lens sells new, by itself, for $175 or so. With a body, new, it adds $100 to the cost of the body only package. Completed auctions on the K2000 + kit lens are around $300 or so. I'd estimate from that a fair price for the *ist DS plus kit lens to be in the neighborhood of $250. -- Godfrey www.gdgphoto.com www.flickr.com/photos/gdgphoto www.twitter.com/godfreydigiorgi -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

A week or so back I spent half of the day (my wife's birthday, no less!) at an R/C model aircraft meet. There weren't a whole lot of cameras around; apart from one guy with a Canon+400/2.8 on a Wimberley rig I only saw a few other DSLRs there. I did, however, see two guys toting K1000s. I was trying (and mostly failing) to track small objects, some of which were flying at over 150mph*, with my 300+1.7x, and even then most of the time all I could see was a small object in the middle of a large expanse of sky. One of the K1000 shooters was standing fairly near me, trying to shoot the same subjects with a 135mm (some third-party brand I didn't even recognise), so I let him use my 80-200 for a couple of rolls of film. * Scale model jet aircraft, with real jet engines, burning around a gallon of kerosene in a five-minute flight. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

K20D vs. K7 High ISO Noise Comparisons
This guy has posted the best controlled comparison I have seen of noise levels in the two cameras: http://www.flickr.com/photos/51031...@n00/sets/72157621362031046/ Navigate through until you get to the original size images. Pentax claimed that the K7 would have lower noise. This is clearly not so. The difference is especially apparent at ISO 3200 and 6400 (both of which I would like to use). I'm glad I haven't yet bought a K7. I may still buy one, but not for better noise. Or I may wait to see what testing shows when the K8 comes out. Some reports claim that Pentax implemented less noise reduction in RAW images from the K7, and that this accounts for its poorer noise performance. I don't know whether this is true or just BS. From what I read, the K7 is a fine camera in other respects. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

The ISO was 400 the f stop was f10 the shutter speed was 1/640. There should be lots of DOF but I think there was some subject movement... ann sanfedele wrote: Jack Davis wrote: Looks like a decent web image was produced by the much maligned FA 28~200. OT: Aperture Update (sort of)
Apple today released an chunk of code said to improve the operability of all of it's Pro software. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/prokit50.html I can only assume it puts some patches in the system and/or applications that correct a few bugs that we've all been complaining about for more than a year.
