Re: Sigma flash woes

2009-08-02 Thread Thibouille
P-TTL metering relies entirely on usual multizone metering. This is
why it was so much cheaper to abandon plain old TTL (much less
hardware, less software = much cheaper).
It means that a new flash would not change much if PTTL protocol
doesn't change or if metering doesn't change (except badly engineered
Sigmas maybe).

Luckily the K-7 has an improved metering. I'm not using flash enough
to say how much better it is than older Pentax DSLRs but it is better.
The classical shoot in front of a mirror was quite acceptable when K10D was not.

The guys from the list who own a K-7 and use flash should make
thourough testing :)
I'd help but consider myself as a total noob as per flash use :(

There's loads of stuff. I work in IT and the main product we

the MS toolkit. I'm not interested in the hassle of finding non-MS

OTOH, I believe Micro$soft is still the largest vendor of Mac
software.

Explain yourself, please.

Microsoft is currently selling 1 software program for the Macintosh,

• Microsoft Office (1998-2008) (with some breaks in computability)

which consists of :

	• Microsoft Excel Version 8.0 (1998), 9.0 (2000), 10 (2001), 11
(2004), 12 (2008)
	• Microsoft PowerPoint Version 8.0 (1998), 9.0 (2000), 10.0 (2002),
11.0 (2004), 12.0 (2008)
	• Microsoft Word Version 8.0 (1998), 9.0 (2000), 10 (2001), 11
(2004), 12 (2008)

• Microsoft Entourage (2001-2008)

Apple probably sells more copies of iLife and iWork to Mac users at
$89-$99 each than MS sells Office for Mac for $299-$440.

Nope, it'll pop out of manual exposure at a whim.

Sometimes it won't let me set into manual.

So it's broken by design. One reason I love the mode switch on my
Nikon Speedlights. No way for the flash to override hardware selection
of mode.

It might. But even then the preflash will trigger the strobes early.
If the strobes are smart enough to offer a preflash delay option, you
can also use a Nikon SG-3IR panel to block the visible portion of the
popup's firing (this should work for controlling a flash via wireless
TTL as well).

If I stick with Pentax, I may well need to find something to replace
my AF540. I swear that I spend more time fighting that POS than I do
with it operating correctly.

Sometimes P-TTL works beautifully, sometimes I just get something
about four stops underexposed. That, however, may be the camera,
someone said that they tried a K-7 and where the K20 metered on the
reflection of the flash the K-7 metered on the rest of the scene.

Since I can't trust P-TTL to work properly, or may have other reasons
to shoot in manual flash mode, I frequently want to. My AF-540 will
not stay in manual mode. It'll work in manual for a while and will
then spontaneously decide that what I really need is P-TTL.

I even sent it in to be repaired. They replaced a bunch of the
circuitry, but it still decides it knows better than me what I want.

I don't think it's possible to "repair" it so it won't do that. My
experience with the AF-540 is it will stay in whatever mode you set it
in until it powers itself down to save the batteries.

When it powers up again it reverts to P-TTL and I think that's the way
Pentax designed it.

Another peeve is that there is no manual control over the in camera
flash. I have studio strobes that can be optically triggered, but
there seems to be no way of doing so without putting a little dumb
external flash on my camera. It would be so simple to have a menu item
to run the flash manually at full power down to 1/16 at 1/2 stop
intervals.

Re: Magic Needles

2009-08-02 Thread Joseph McAllister
Loved the concept. It worked. But I could never break myself of the
habit of putting a lengthwise curl on the film to stiffen it to try to
insert it into the needles. That just never worked right, and the
force to insert the film deep enough to be certain the film would stay
put usually folded the film.

What worked on the second try was holding the film on both sides with
little sticking out, and pushing on it while I let my fingers part
around the spool.

Any other ways tried left the film crooked between the needles, which
did not then self straighten as you wound the film, creating a bump in
the film as it wound.

In other words, it worked, but I personally found it awkward. If I had
done as I did when I learned to load film on 135 and 120 Nikor reels,
and practiced for a few dozen times before trying it in haste, I
probably would have loved it.

Changing rolls in the dark has never been a problem for me, as there was no

It's doable but difficult. Much easier is a monopod and a normal ball
head. Rotate the camera in portrait position on the monopod and
experiment a little. The bottom part of the monopod should align with
the nodal point of the lens.
Put a spirit level in the hotshoe and rotate the contraption.

If you're interested I make a few photos of the setup.

Yes you are. Unfortunately, I have several pieces of hardware
(programmable radio, audio input to USB) that the developers never
bothered to write drivers for the Mac. Which is so dumb, as the Macs
now use the same CPU as the PCs, and serial port emulation has been

I'm not interested in running Windows on a Mac -I don't need emulators
adding another layer of complication. I've already ordered a Netbook
because they are useful looking devices, and I think this machine is going
to die soon. Getting a Netbook now reduces the impact of losing this
machine. I'll think about a longer-term solution later, based around my
photography workflow, and buy whatever is most suitable for that that I can
afford at the time.

Meantime, having re-installed Windows I'm struggling to get the new
installation to connect to the network drive where all my photos are
stored...

Re: Ping

2009-08-02 Thread Joseph McAllister
Apples campaign to inform PC users about Windows capabilities on the
Macintosh for the past several years must be pretty much a failure then.

I run XP on my iMac under Parallels, which allows you to have both OSs
running at the same time, and copy and paste or move files back and
forth between them. There are others that allow the same
functionality, and others that mean you have to reboot to change OSs.

If you feel the need to have a Netbook as well, you might want to wait
until early next year, when Apple will have a tablet form Netbook,
like a large iTouch/iPhone with a 12~14 inch screen (16-9). Of course,
that is only an informed rumor, as Apple never announces new products
beforehand.

Once you go Mac, you'll never go back...

If you use PhotoME, it will show you which AF point(s) were in focus.
That could help you confirm what they were picking up. (Of course, if
you focus-and-recompose, you're pretty much on your own.)

There's loads of stuff. I work in IT and the main product we develop uses
the MS toolkit. I'm not interested in the hassle of finding non-MS clones
for this stuff, and I'm not about to pay for it again when I already have
it.

There are also a few other non-MS development tools I use regularly which
are not available on Macs

I've had this Dell Precision M50 for 6-7 years, and it's been very good. I
think the hardware is starting to get a bit flakey now, though, so I've

Re: Does K20 feed video signals to video output during LV?

2009-08-02 Thread Tim Øsleby
I don't think we are crazy. We just thinks a bit outside the box :-)

The Zigview S2 Standard was the unit I originally looked at. It looks
like a fine piece of equipment for the purpose.

But I have other "needs" to. And a combined Imagetank and an external
HD with lot of space is one of them.
I was doing some research on the options and came over the Vosonic
unit. Then it struck me that this unit could double as a
distance/angle view finder. The idea of combining two ideas makes it
a lot easier to justify the money spent.

I haven't decided yet, and probably will not decide until springtime.

I have another use for the view finder too. Every year I use to help
out a local rock festival as a festival shooter. The finder plus a
monpod would enable me when i comes to making pictures of the crowd in
front of the stage. Give me another perspective. It is only my
imagination that sets the limits of the use.

Oh, shite. And I thought I was going to get a little rest from local

Well, at least, I don't need to bring any warm clothes, makes my

That weather report is from Washington STATE, not Washington, DC. It's
unusually warm for Washington STATE, but I guess not so much for
Washington, DC.

That's why Congress takes a months paid vacation in August.

I still have my first one, it has a minor problem in that it does not
focus perfectly to infinity at 16mm, otherwise it is great. I decided
to keep it as is. The problem is easy to work arround.
(and no problem at f/8 or so :-)

I had the K10D, before so no good way to correct.

Now with the K-7, I did a check for my faster/longer lenses
and was a bit shocked that the first try (with the FA 31mm)
needed the FULL -10 correction (end of scale).

Going through the rest, it got somewhat better, but many showed a quite
noticable
improvement in a brick-wall check after dialing in the measured correction.

So it certainly it is worth the time and effort (took me about half a day for
all lenses).

Just FYI, these are te corrections I needed:

FA 31mm 1.8 -10
FA 43mm 1.9 -2
FA 50mm 1.4 -7
DA 70mm 2.4 -6
FA 77mm 1.8 0
FA 85mm 1.4 -5
FA 50mm 2.8 macro -4
DFA 100mm 2.8 macro +2
FA 200mm 2.80
DA 300mm 4.0+5
FA 400mm 5.6+5

FA 28-105 PZ-4
FA 24-90-4
DA 16-50-7
DA 50-135 0

Front/Back focssing checked with a ruler-like A4 print
under 45 degrees with a single bold line to focus on.

I agree that the film speed dial is a little wierd, but I rather like

I really do like working with the G1, but there's a few things it just
doesn't do as well as a good SLR, especially one with body IS.

GESO- two blocks away-more or less

2009-08-02 Thread Bong Manayon
Former president Cory Aquino passed away Aug 1; she was the widow of
Ninoy Aquino who was allegedly murdered by then dictator Marcos in
1983 and she was swept into power in the peaceful revolution back in
1986. Anyway, two blocks away...

...a gallery in progress as the events unfold. If you're familiar
with Flickr, my photos are geotagged. Her house is two blocks away
from mine...

Re: Does K20 feed video signals to video output during LV?

2009-08-02 Thread Peter Zalabai
Thank you Tim! I tought I am the only crazy man on earth who comes up
with such an idea! :) I was also looking for small tv screens to do
this... :) But now I feel better that I am not the only crazy one :)

You might give a try to the Zigview system as Zigview S2 might be a
solution for you. But of course that one has it's limitations as well.

I think i could live with the bad quality for a while.
The idea is to hook it up with one of these
http://www.vosonic.com/product.php?PA=feature&kind=1&id_1=9
and use a cable release and a wide angle on tripod for some nest
photography next year. All I need is to see whats in frame.

On the other hand: I might use the bad screen quality to talk myself
into buying a K-7 :-)
Time will tell.

I picked up a K2 myself a couple of weeks ago. It's not perfect (the
hotshoe doesn't work - but the X contact does - and the mirror lock up
switch is jammed) but the meter and everything else looks OK. Even the
film speed dial can be made to move (but what was Pentax thinking with
that design?). I'm looking forward to trying it out but initial
impressions are that I like my KX better.

Cheers

Looking at some of the photos, I just realized, they are wooden
floors, with a noticable grain.

I bet that is what triggered the focus.
