Re: Boris reviews Pentax K-7 (part 2)
Read carefully Peter. The note on page 308 is a troubleshooting guide that tells you what to do if shake reduction doesn't work. It says that when panning or shooting at night with slow shutter speeds, it may not work. In other words, SR won't eliminate shake in a slow shutter pan. I already know that. But there's no need to turn it off when shooting a slow shutter pan. I know that, because I do it. And doing personal experimentation is always the best way to arrive at the truth. After 6000 frames I've found for certain that one never has to turn off SR in the K7. Would you like to see more evidence? Paul On Aug 28, 2009, at 2:32 AM, P. J. Boris, You comment about auto focus being slow in Live View. You can set the K7 to use the standard autofocus detectors rather than Contrast AF. Re: Boris reviews Pentax K-7 (part 2)
I have to agree with Paul on this one. The general advice in the photo world is to turn off SR/VR/IS when the camera is supported or when panning. In reality, I've almost always forget to turn it off, and haven't ever had an image degraded because of it. Now, I just leave it on and foget about it. If I were to have a problem I would shut it off. As with many things, I read the instructions and then do what works. Having spent almost three weeks on the road, bouncing between Pittsburgh and Rochester but spending most of my time painting and fixing the house in Pittsburgh to make it presentable for sale, I finally arrived back in Boston Yesterday. I put a lot of miles on my Triumph (aka The Red Menace) during that time and it performed brilliantly, gobbling up many miles of Interstate highway at very enthusiastic speeds. Spent Wednesday night in Philadelphia, courtesy of Rick Womer and family. They were wonderfully gracious hosts. I'm looking forward to seeing them again in October when Lisa and I visit for a meeting. Very little photography done in the past three weeks. 2009/8/28 Mark Roberts m...@robertstech.com: Having spent almost three weeks on the road, bouncing between Pittsburgh and Rochester but spending most of my time painting and fixing the house in Pittsburgh to make it presentable for sale, I finally arrived back in Boston Yesterday. Now I have to get to work on a print that's going into an exhibition shortly. Perhaps I can actually get out and take some new photos when that's done? Facebook has its plusses and minuses, as do each of the social networking sites. I avoided it for years, but when I got dragged onto it, found that it was the defacto communications channel for the vast majority of my normal friends, especially the ones under 40. Most of the geeks and freaks are still over on Livejournal, but a lot of them are heading over to facebook. When I take pictures at an event, I'll post the few good ones on flickr, but I'll post the mass of them on facebook where folks can tag them for each other. About once a week I'll get an email from facebook that someone made one of my photos their profile picture. Nothing with an APS-C sensor is ever likely to sell for much over $1000 by next year. Like it or not, the age of the semi-pro or advanced amateur DSLR with an APS-C sensor is drawing to a close. Why? Cost, battery life, lightness and compactness (of lenses as well as bodies), and, arguably, in-body shake reduction all argue for smaller sensors. Being able to do very precise things with depth of field, being able to make very large prints, not having to adapt mentally to altered fields of view, and what else argue for full frame sensors? (What's the minimum price for a printer able to do prints larger than 13x17, for that matter?) Most DSLR camera sales are APS-C; cost matters. The advanced amateur DSLRs with APS-C sensors don't generally lack pro-level utility due to the sensor; they lack it because either the company isn't after the pro market (Pentax, slightly different Olympus), or because the company wants to reserve the pro market for the inherently expensive full-frame bodies. (Canon, Nikon, Sony.) Sony's high end body prices are subsidized, it's not the natural price of components plus margin. That's not a game anybody can win, and most are going to have more sense than to try to play it. It's not clear just where the natural price is for a full frame body just now. It would be honestly strange if the historical trend throughout the film era toward smaller sizes of film and thus camera, on the one hand, and the digital constraint that smaller chips are cheaper to fab and not in a linear way, on the other hand, both wandered off whistling just at this moment in time. Or, for that matter, that the optimum chemical sensor size and the optimum digital sensor (price/performance/portability optimum) size turned out to be the same. Full-frame digital might turn out to be the eventual digital SLR default, but I don't think it's inherently obvious that this will be the case. -- Graydon -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

RE: OT: Sony Releases A850 FF Camera for $2,000
FF Systems can achieve higher image quality despite using inferior average lenses. Lens cost can be less with FF systems because the lens doesn't have to be as good with a FF system as it does for a APS-C system for same or even better system image quality. Similar to the reason even a mediorce lens on the 8x10 format destroyed the very best lenses on the 35mm format. Timewise, I would say Port Jervis/Matamoras. We used to live in Pittsburgh and traveled to Boston all the time. It takes more time to go through the populated parts of the trip, i.e. NY, Connecticut and Mass. The PA part is a breeze by comparison, hence you are going to travel further for the same time in PA, hence distance wise you are better off getting as far east as possible on your way to Boston. The larger the format, the lenses become less critical, not more critical to overall system performance. Unfortunately while that's a nice theory it is not born out in practice. As a practical matter it's easier to make a lens with the necessary Zone A(Centre) and Zone B(APS-C edge) performance for APS-C than to make one which has the necessary Zone C(35mm edge) performance for even low-MP FF. High edge performance on a 35mm image circle is simply harder than high edge performance on APS-C and there's not enough difference in format size to get the same effect as LF. High-MP FF, which is becoming the norm, is absolutely brutal on lenses. You have to move up to MF Digital to get pixel densities low enough for lens quality to start dropping out of the equation. Pixel density is the deteminant for how much lens performance matters. And FF these days has pixel densities in the same range as APS-C (The Sony 24.5MP bodies have an 11MP APS-C crop mode for example), but further out in the image circle of the lens. The A850 shares the A900's sensor as well as it's tendency to show the warts of lenses that performed well on APS-C cameras and on film cameras. These cameras, along with the 21MP Canons, obsolete all but the absolute highest-performing lenses if you want acceptable IQ from them.
