Re: Boris reviews Pentax K-7 (part 2)

I would assume that the PDF file I linked to is the latest manual. If
you open that PDF file in Acrobat, select the Pages tab, and click on
the page labeled 310 it will take you to the page numbered 308. Under
the column headed problem, scan down the page to Shake Reduction
Doesn't Work. I tried to make it easy. Of course you can simply open
the acrobat reader search function and type in Panning it will take
you to the same page. In fact it's apparently the only place Panning is
mentioned. If they thought it wasn't important it wouldn't be there.
It's not opinion, it's documentation, if you think it's wrong you should
contact Pentax. I don't think it's wrong.

Paul Stenquist wrote:

on. I make judgements based on results rather than on the opinion of
others.

Page two on this PDF hosted at the Pentaximaging.com site

or the K-7 manual on page 310 of the K-7 manual

http://www.pentaximaging.com/pdf/K-7_e_web.pdf

or the K20D manual on page 267

http://www.pentaximaging.com/files/scms_docs//K20D_Manual.pdf

I'll leave it as an exercise for the student to check out the manuals
for the K10D, K100D, K200D and K2000/K-m. But I'll wager they all
say it's best to turn off SR while panning, as well as while using a
tripod, taking macros, etc.
I think I'll take the word of the Pentax engineers and marketing
folks that SR should be turned off, I tried a couple of panned shots
of flying birds and they came out looking double exposed. I deleted
them but I'm sure I'll forget to turn SR off again, and I'll post
some samples.

end camera, hell, it doesn't belong in the design of Point an Shoot
camera.

Unlike the focus point issue it looks like it's not an easy a fix,
what with the hardware switch being gone and all...

Most of my photography of dogs is either panning or hoping the
'predictive' auto-focus will afford me some good shots. As far as
panning goes, I never turn SR off, and my opinion is it has little
effect on the sharpness or quality of the resulting images. I rarely
remember to turn it off when I'm on a tripod with a remote release!

What I'm saying is that Pentax probably realized that in fact
leaving it on all the time for an outdoor shooter, or off all the
time for a studio shooter, was not that important a deal. Given that
their users weren't complaining, they relegated the switch function
to a less intrusive menu item.

Re: Boris reviews Pentax K-7 (part 2)

Read carefully Peter. The note on page 308 is a troubleshooting guide
that tells you what to do if shake reduction doesn't work. It says
that when panning or shooting at night with slow shutter speeds, it
may not work. In other words, SR won't eliminate shake in a slow
shutter pan. I already know that. But there's no need to turn it off
when shooting a slow shutter pan. I know that, because I do it. And
doing personal experimentation is always the best way to arrive at the
truth.

After 6000 frames I've found for certain that one never has to turn
off SR in the K7. Would you like to see more evidence?

You comment about auto focus being slow in Live View. You can set the
K7 to use the standard autofocus detectors rather than Contrast AF.
It removes the live view image for a split second, but it's a lot

I have to agree with Paul on this one. The general advice in the
photo world is to turn off SR/VR/IS when the camera is supported or
when panning. In reality, I've almost always forget to turn it off,
and haven't ever had an image degraded because of it. Now, I just
leave it on and foget about it. If I were to have a problem I would
shut it off. As with many things, I read the instructions and then do
what works.

Very little photography done in the past three weeks. Now I have to

It's basically the same as the A900, only 2fps slower and a slightly

I have to agree with Paul on this one. The general advice in the
photo world is to turn off SR/VR/IS when the camera is supported or
when panning. In reality, I've almost always forget to turn it off,
and haven't ever had an image degraded because of it. Now, I just
leave it on and foget about it. If I were to have a problem I would
shut it off. As with many things, I read the instructions and then do
what works.

When I got the K10D, I read those warnings, and I went out and did some
tests. SR helped even with the panning shots, and even with panning
shots done from the monopod, so I leave it on all the time. I may cause
issues in some situations, but not in the ones for which I use the
camera. Since I mostly shoot race cars on track, something above 50% of
my photos are panned.

Facebook has its plusses and minuses, as do each of the social
networking sites. I avoided it for years, but when I got dragged onto
it, found that it was the defacto communications channel for the vast
majority of my normal friends, especially the ones under 40.

Most of the geeks and freaks are still over on Livejournal, but a lot of
them are heading over to facebook.

When I take pictures at an event, I'll post the few good ones on
flickr, but I'll post the mass of them on facebook where folks can tag
them for each other. About once a week I'll get an email from facebook
that someone made one of my photos their profile picture.

I have gotten to the point that I basically just ignore any of the
stupid games and apps that go around facebook like STDs in a freshman
dorm.

I expect a K-7 based camera with a new sensor and processing in fall
2010 based on Pentax's track record for flagships. Before that will be
an updated K-m body and hopefully a third body between the K-m and
K-7.

3 to 5 years of no upgrades just due to better sensors and faster image

The next Pentax bodies will be sold on (low) price, not on features.

They're busy staking out small, tough, and good value as their

compete on price, which would be crazy anyway. (You never compete on
price as the little guy; you can compete on value, or features, but
price is too dependent on volume.)

Full frame isn't inherently an advantage.

Up at the full frame end of things, lens costs dominate the opportunity
cost of switching systems. Sony is trying hard to subsidize the body
costs long enough to get people switched in system terms. I'm not
expecting this to work quite how they plan.

Switching systems only works if people are willing to give up their
favourite existing lenses, or the body has some feature that they
absolutely must have to do their job or make them happy. Those are both
fairly rare conditions. The last thing standing I can think of is
in-body anti-shake.

Pentax is betting quite a bit on the unwillingness of people who've
tried them to give up the DA Ltds., and to a lesser extent the DA*
lenses. So far, though, combining that with good value in the bodies
doesn't seem to be a bad bet.

I expect a mid-life kicker (a K-7n?) in perhaps eighteen months. But
that's likely to sell for not a lot more than the K-7, which by then
will probably be selling a bit cheaper that it is today. I'd expect
a new revision of the sensor, and several small tweaks, but not much
else; much as I'd like it, I doubt if we'd see a faster shutter.
Perhaps we'll see an improved grip with a live card socket, and even

compete on price, which would be crazy anyway.

We pretty much agree, I think; I should have said price/performance
(or, for those pedants among us, performance/price :-). But I see
Pentax as more likely to do that by lowering the price for close to
the current performance levels (although there is room for two models
between the K-m and the K-7, at the $600-$700 and $900 price points).

$1000 by next year. Like it or not, the age of the semi-pro or
advanced amateur DSLR with an APS-C sensor is drawing to a close.

Why?

Cost, battery life, lightness and compactness (of lenses as well as
bodies), and, arguably, in-body shake reduction all argue for smaller
sensors.

Being able to do very precise things with depth of field, being able to
make very large prints, not having to adapt mentally to altered fields
of view, and what else argue for full frame sensors? (What's the
minimum price for a printer able to do prints larger than 13x17, for
that matter?)

Most DSLR camera sales are APS-C; cost matters. The advanced amateur
DSLRs with APS-C sensors don't generally lack pro-level utility due to
the sensor; they lack it because either the company isn't after the pro
market (Pentax, slightly different Olympus), or because the company
wants to reserve the pro market for the inherently expensive full-frame
bodies. (Canon, Nikon, Sony.)

Sony's high end body prices are subsidized, it's not the natural price
of components plus margin. That's not a game anybody can win, and most
are going to have more sense than to try to play it. It's not clear
just where the natural price is for a full frame body just now.

It would be honestly strange if the historical trend throughout the film
era toward smaller sizes of film and thus camera, on the one hand, and
the digital constraint that smaller chips are cheaper to fab and not in
a linear way, on the other hand, both wandered off whistling just at
this moment in time. Or, for that matter, that the optimum chemical
sensor size and the optimum digital sensor
(price/performance/portability optimum) size turned out to be the same.

Full-frame digital might turn out to be the eventual digital SLR
default, but I don't think it's inherently obvious that this will be the
case.

The loss of face would be pretty drastic, and wouldn't do good things to
market uptake, which they're apparently managing to generate a bit of.

Option 1: They actually ship the 645D, for real and serious. It takes
the place of the full frame body in the lineup.

Option 2: 2010 sees the alleged Samsung full-frame sensor ship in a Pentax body.

Option 3: K mount or other EVIL teeny camera, Pentax abandons the DSLR field.

Option 4: K-5 APS-C camera based on the K-7 body; visually almost
indistinct. K-5 has a 15 MP shaved silicon sensor/other not used in
commercial sensors yet tech sensor and demonstrates vastly (x2) improved
dynamic range, coupled with 2,500 raw exposures per batter charge.

I figure the likelihood goes 4,1,2,3. (Assuming 1 and 2 are
_different_.) But, heh, the entrails are hazy; don't blame me if what
we get is an eight kilo brick of titanium and glass certified to a depth
of 1,200 m in salt water for a year.

RE: OT: Sony Releases A850 FF Camera for $2,000

2009-08-28 Thread J.C. O'Connell
FF Systems can achieve higher image quality despite using
inferior average lenses. Lens cost can be less with FF systems
because the lens doesn't have to be as good with
a FF system as it does for a APS-C system for same or even better
system image quality. Similar to the reason even a mediorce
lens on the 8x10 format destroyed the very best lenses on
the 35mm format. The larger the format, the lenses become
less critical, not more critical to overall system performance.

I don't know why some are confused about FF cameras,
its all about image quality. The higher the better.
This is why when 35mm cameras dominated there were
MF, 4x5, 8x10 and even larger cameras in use. Image
quality matters. APS digital is not the ultimage with
anything better being overkill. Just from a cropping
flexibility standpoint, higher image quality is better

Exactly, which makes me wonder if Pentax can justify asking $1,300
for their next flagship APS-C camera.

You notice Olympus quaking in their boots asking people to buy 4/3rds
kit?

What next flagship? I don't expect anything better than the K-7 to
show up for at least the next 3 to 5 years. Beyond that is too far
away to be making any kind of predictions.

3 to 5 years of no upgrades just due to better sensors and faster image
engine chips becoming available, if nothing else? This doesn't seem
highly plausible, somehow.

Re: What's half way between Pittsburgh and Boston?

2009-08-28 Thread Gonz
Timewise, I would say Port Jervis/Matamoras. We used to live in
Pittsburgh and traveled to Boston all the time. It takes more time to
go through the populated parts of the trip, i.e. NY, Connecticut and
Mass. The PA part is a breeze by comparison, hence you are going to
travel further for the same time in PA, hence distance wise you are
better off getting as far east as possible on your way to Boston.
Port Jervis/Matamoras looks like an interesting place too.

I disagree. APS-C will be selling for similar prices to what it does
now (all the way up to $2000) and will be differentiated over cheap FF
the same way it is now (speed primarily) for the high-end market. The
D300s will remain king of the APS-C hill.

Most of the market never needed FF. It's got disadvantages as well as
its well-known advantages.

Unfortunately while that's a nice theory it is not born out in
practice. As a practical matter it's easier to make a lens with the
necessary Zone A(Centre) and Zone B(APS-C edge) performance for APS-C
than to make one which has the necessary Zone C(35mm edge) performance
for even low-MP FF. High edge performance on a 35mm image circle is
simply harder than high edge performance on APS-C and there's not
enough difference in format size to get the same effect as LF. High-MP
FF, which is becoming the norm, is absolutely brutal on lenses. You
have to move up to MF Digital to get pixel densities low enough for
lens quality to start dropping out of the equation.

Pixel density is the deteminant for how much lens performance matters.
And FF these days has pixel densities in the same range as APS-C (The
Sony 24.5MP bodies have an 11MP APS-C crop mode for example), but
further out in the image circle of the lens.

The A850 shares the A900's sensor as well as it's tendency to show the
warts of lenses that performed well on APS-C cameras and on film
cameras. These cameras, along with the 21MP Canons, obsolete all but
the absolute highest-performing lenses if you want acceptable IQ from
them.

APS-C is the same idea as 35mm was back in the day. The best
combination of IQ, size and cost for most of the market. Cheap FF is a
boon for those who need the absolute most IQ and are on a limited
budget since they can spend more on the lenses they need, but for
those who need better balanced performance APS-C remains the current
sweet-spot.
