a silly old photo

2009-09-08 Thread Larry Colen
I was trying to see if I had an old photo (other than Jr. High
yearbook) of the photographer at my friend's wedding this weekend, and
ran across a photo of myself:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2611/3902314941_2a4981da25.jpg

Even though I don't know who took it, or with what camera, it is
topical to this list.

It is also an example of a now obsolete darkroom technique. Rather
than my describing it, I'll see if anyone can figure out how the
vignetting was done.

Thank you - Bob, David, Paul, Rick and Christine.
Rick, I agree with your your crop suggestion.
As for the tree with stars - I did not know you get colors in moonlight.
Christine, chat little girl is my daughter. She was practicing and the
whole family was dancing around her (me with camera, my son with
diffuser and my wife with reflector) - it was fun indeed!

Uh oh, bad shutter. Unless you were using a flash and the

Re: GESO - few shots from the last weekend

2009-09-08 Thread Rick Womer
I love the first two, Sasha. The use of shadows, the girl's pose, and the B&W
rendering in the first one are excellent. The second is beautifully composed,
and the preservation of color is nicely done.

The third seems a bit static. Cropping about 20% off the right and the top
might enhance the tension of the scene.

Sorry for the delay, Luiz. I looked back in my Bridge db and discovered

Classic Car Cruise, so it's vintage -- older than 20 years at least.

That "sign" would actually be a large overhead light stand. This Cruise
takes place in the parking lot of a Harvey's Hamburger restaurant, in
keeping with the days in the 1960's when these cars would gather at the
original Harvey's at Jane & #401 highway before heading north out of
Toronto for illegal midnight street racing. Some of the cars even sport
original Harvey's advertising decals in their windows.

Was out on a camping trip this weekend in the red clay dust of
Northern California. K200D + FA 24-90 were innocently sitting on a
picnic table with the shoulder strap dangling over the edge. While
sitting down, foot catches strap and sends camera crashing lens first
into the red clay. After some astonished staring, I picked up the
camera - covered in red dust. After a wipe off with damp towel, all
seems to be in working order. However, there is now red clay embedded
in the nylon strap and the notches on the program dial on the left.
Plus scratches galore on my rear LCD!!!

Lesson learned - don't leave pot handles or camera straps dangling
over the edge.

GESO - few shots from the last weekend

I hiked in the mountains near Kirkwood (a place famous among powder
skiing lovers).
Never been there in winter, but it is a great place even without snow.

Re: Dropped K200D

2009-09-08 Thread Larry Levy
I come from the capital K Klutz school of carefulness. Starting with the
10D, I've been putting Giottos Aegis screens on the LCDs. It's a lot cheaper
to replace if (when) something goes wrong.

I'm also one of those who typically puts a UV filter in front of the lens.
When I dropped my camera bag in an airport, the only damage was some
cross-threading in the lens (which Eric fixed for me) and the replacement of
the filter (which had given itself up to save the lens).

Make sure your lens contacts are clean, both camera and lens side.
Poor contact may result in the dark exposures.

And I really wish Pentax would ship, or give the option of, a

shipped matte screen and I can with the katzeye, and I have manual focus

Mark Roberts escreveu:

The release of next year's PDML Photo Annual will coincide with an
exhibition of photos from the book at the Dank Haus gallery in
Chicago, Illinois, USA, May 7th through June 12th, 2010.
After much planning and discussion, the PDML's own Christine Aguila
succeeded in facilitating an agreement between Dank Haus Gallery in
Chicago and the editors of the PDML Photo Annual (and considering that
the "editorial staff" includes myself, Bill Robb, Doug Brewer and
Scott Loveless, that's quite an achievement!) for an actual exhibit of
physical prints to celebrate the publication of the next book. As
you'll see, this wasn't as simple as one might think. Read on…

First, the book itself.
The last book was quite a rush project, and having the image
submission period extending through the Thanksgiving-Christmas holiday
season didn't make it any easier. So we've decided to push it back
this time around, which will also get the book release closer to the
time-frame of the gallery exhibit (which was slotted in the only
workable dates the gallery had open). Image submissions will be
accepted (via a web site as before) from January 1st through February
28th.
Any PDML member in good standing of January 1st will be allotted one
photograph in the book. Members will be permitted to submit up to
three photographs for the book, to give the editors more latitude for
creating a cohesive presentation. Those who want to be the sole
determinant of what image they get into the book can do so by
submitting just one image. Those who make the editors' jobs easier by
submitting two or three images will receive our undying gratitude, at
the very least :)

The book is slated to be edited and completed electronically by the
middle of March and the editors should have proofs in hand about two
weeks later. If the proofs look good, the book will be available to
PDML members immediately. (If revision is necessary there will be a
delay of another two weeks or so.) "Official" publication will be on
May 7 when the exhibit opens.

The Exhibit

The exhibit curator will be Sue Barton, curator of Dank Haus Gallery
and chair of the Dank Haus Fine Arts Committee, who will select
approximately 40 images from the book for display. Obviously, we
expect to have more than 40 photos in the book so, equally obviously,
not everyone will have their photograph represented in the exhibit.
Much as we'd like to show everyone's photo, it just isn't physically
possible. The final arbiter of photos chosen for the exhibit will be
Sue Barton of Dank Haus.

To insure consistency and quality of prints, I will be making all the
prints here. We can't be shipping prints all over the planet and, more
importantly, Sue Barton isn't willing to put on an exhibition of
prints based on web images unless she knows the prints will be
consistent and is familiar with work of the printer. (The only
alternative would be for people to ship prints to her for
evaluation/selection and that's clearly a non-starter.)

I'll print on either Hahnemuehl Fine Art Pearl or Ilford Gold Fibre
Silk paper. Sizes will be approximately 8 x 12 or 12 x 18, as decided
upon by the curator based on technical quality and artistic
considerations.
Framing will be done in Chicago. Christine Aguila has been doing a lot
of leg-work on this and has succeeded in getting several framing shops
to bid on the honor of doing the job. No kidding. This will assure us
of getting very good pricing.

Yes, you're going to have to pay for the printing and framing if you
want to be in the exhibit. But the good news is that what you pay will
be less than you could possibly get the same quality work done for
yourself. A lot less. (I'm paying over $200.00 per 12x18 print for
good framing these days. I expect the PDML price will be about half
that, possibly less.) Prices will be definite by the time the image
submission period begins.

Sales of prints at the exhibition: Yes, you might even make a profit
from this deal. Those whose photos are selected for the exhibition
will have the option of offering the print for sale at the gallery.
This will be subject to the gallery's standard terms (most
importantly, their commission!), which Sue Barton will describe in
detail before this whole thing goes on line.

Re: K10 problem

2009-09-08 Thread John Sessoms

From: John Francis

When I had problems like this (many years ago, with my PZ-1p), the
problem was a borderline contact between the lens and the camera.
Hold the lens just the wrong way and the "A" pin didn't make contact,
so the camera took a shot or two with the aperture set to f/32 (I
usually shoot in Tv mode, so the shutter speed was fixed as well).

It took me a while to figure this out, but nowadays it should be
much, much easier - look at the EXIF entries to see what has changed.
If the "A" contact is suspect the lens information code will switch.
If, on the other hand, all the EXIF value look reasonable you may have
a lens that is misbehaving (a sticky iris, perhaps).

I have this problem with one of my lenses, but whenever it happens, the
K10D display shows "F--"; the same indication I get when I take the lens
out of 'A'.

Yes it does. In fact, that's precisely the *difference* between
"natural" and "organic": The former doesn't mean anything but food has
to meet very strict standards (in North America, Europe, Japan and a
few other countries) to be labeled "organic".

"Organic" is a tax on the gullible.

Yes, I'd rather pay an agrogiant corp for a bucket of its fertiliser

The thing is this looks like the agro-giants are just relabeling.

It would be one thing if the prices on produce had gone up, but what it
looks like to me is they're trying to hide a price hike behind a new

Re: K10 problem

2009-09-08 Thread Steffen Zahn
This can also be caused by aperture blades that temporarily get stuck. I
have a lens that has this problem, and when used in A-position of the
aperture ring, the blades will close a bit more with successive
pictures. One can see this when looking through the front side of the
lens while taking pictures. The correct operation is when the blades
completely open up after each picture.

For strap you might try a nylon bristle brush, dry. Not wet. Nylon doesn't
scratch if you aren't too vigorous. For notches I'd try a q-tip or even a

The only reason I can see, and it is a good one, are the single harvest
seeds. Since agriculture began farmers have planted their fields with
the best seeds saved from the previous years harvest. Lots of farmers

Is it at all possible that your battery was losing charge? What you

My K10 has started taking shots that are very dark followed by some
shots that are ok then there are a few that are very dark followed by
more that are ok. So far the bad shots have all been occurring in
groups of 3. I don't know if that is just coincidence or not. In 1
group of bad shots 2 were dark and 1 was so light it was difficult to
make anything out.

A few months ago my K100 started rebooting occasionally. Pentax
quoted $549 to replace the circuit board. Does the K10 problem sound
like it could be as serious, and expensive?

more that are ok. So far the bad shots have all been occurring in

A few months ago my K100 started rebooting occasionally. Pentax

Re: K10 problem

2009-09-08 Thread MikeM
I think I might have not been clear about the 3 shots. They were not taken
in a burst. I looked at the results of each shot before taking the next. I
had only a Tamron 70-300 mm lens, the shots were taken along a walking
track, and I don't take other lenses on the walks.

Subject: K10 problem

My K10 has started taking shots that are very dark followed by some shots
that are ok then there are a few that are very dark followed by more that
are ok. So far the bad shots have all been occurring in groups of 3. I
don't know if that is just coincidence or not. In 1 group of bad shots 2
were dark and 1 was so light it was difficult to make anything out.

A few months ago my K100 started rebooting occasionally. Pentax quoted
$549 to replace the circuit board. Does the K10 problem sound like it
could be as serious, and expensive?

Re: K10 problem

2009-09-08 Thread P. J. Alling
That's interesting, I knew you had to keep the shutter button depressed
to get three quick shots while auto bracketing, on the *ist-Dx series,
but it would fire off the three shots if you just held the shutter down
even in single shot mode. It does stop shooting if you release the
shutter, and takes up the sequence on your next shot, which can be
annoying. The K20D works the same way IIRC, (I don't have the camera
nearby). I'm pretty sure that all the Pentax DSLRs probably work the
same way.

Anthony Farr wrote:

Do you have auto bracketing turned on, but frame advance set to single

and continuous frame advance needed to both be on, but also needed to
be turned on seperately. Who knew?

Thanks, PJ and Ann, I appreciate the comments.

This was also my favorite of the three mushroom shots I posted. I
like the circle because it fits in with a group of abstract images I

Is it with a number of different lenses or is it with the same lens?
(Just to rule out other problems).

Now the cost is another question. It could be anything from a simple
mechanical adjustment, which by the way will probably run between $100
and $200 to replacing most of the guts of the camera, in which case
you'd be better off buying good used one or getting a K20D at close out.
