Re: Dust spots ;-( Give me some help!
Hi bob, I'd send it off to Pentax. Include the 2 images you linked to so they are aware of the problem and exactly what they need to fix. Has the spot been there since new and you just didn't notice it for a while due to the images you have been taking? I'd also check your early images, just to be sure that it isn't a manufacturing problem (mine didn't show up for a few weeks because I just didn't shoot anything closed down enough). I'm also not sure what efforts you need to go to to get your camera to Pentax. I can leave work early and drop off or pick up from the service department - and talk to the tech at the same time. If you have to mail your camera off and deal with people over the phone then I feel for you (I did that with an extended warranty claim once and will never buy an extended warranty again because of it). Some things are best left to the professionals, and being a professional in some areas I know that getting the best information about a problem is the biggest help the customer can provide. I don't know enough about gel cells versus NiCd cells to tell you for sure. You certainly can redo the cells that way, but I'm guessing the built in monitoring and charging circuitry may not be appropriate for gel cels unless they charge and discharge pretty much identically to NiCds. So you might have to disconnect or ignore the built in circuits and gin up a separate charger that's appropriate for gels. OTOH, you might be able to find higher capacity NiCds in the same form factor, and that's a no-brainer switch out that I've done on numerous pieces of gear over the years, but not a flash battery pack. My old Metz 402 flash was equipped standard with a wet cell, and could use a NiCad pack. There was a switch on the thing for adapting the charging circuit from one to the other. When I went to a gelled acid battery, I also had to buy a separate charger to enable charging, as the 402 pack wouldn't charge the dry-fit battery, though it certainly did well using them. Anyway, I don't think John will have any problems with using gel cells, but he will probably need to make some nods to the charging circuit. -- Thanks, DougF (KG4LMZ) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I can relate. My tax returns the past couple of years have been pretty horrifying. If there was an abyss and a spot for jumping off its edge, I'm halfway to the bottom and wondering where the parachute went to ... A call for donations is a sensible endeavor. The host of a few of my lists (SeePhoto, Picture-A-Week and euro-moto) continue to support the cost of operating the server gratis to the users, but all of us who admin lists put out an annual call for donations to help fund the effort. Even a couple of dollars from each subscriber will normally pay the running costs. We simply post a message and tell people to donate directly via PayPal.com to the host owner. I don't know how much comes in on the donation call. OT: Replacing cells in Battery Packs
Semi-OT anyway ... I use these with my Pentax cameras. I've got a Quantum Battery 1+ that I think the battery is dead or discharged in storage until the battery is unrecoverable. It won't turn on, but the charging light & all the power leds light up when the charger is plugged in. It takes a 6v 2.5ah sealed lead acid battery unit that looks like three D-cells soldered together and shrink wrapped. http://tinyurl.com/2epvegu Batteries Plus here in Raleigh can get the individual cells, connect them up and shrink wrap them to make a replacement. Probably cost around $30.00 ... replacement power pack is going to be at least $150 if I can even find one used. I don't think they make these any more. But I was wondering ... Is there any reason I can't replace that battery with a larger capacity Gel Cell if I can find one that will fit inside the case? If a 6v 4ah battery will fit in the case, could I safely use that in place of the the 6v 2.5ah battery. No warranty issues, these are OLD power packs. Re: equipment issues this week
About the best thing I've found for covering the LCD on the back of the camera is that clear plastic packing tape like UPS sells. It's easily cut to the appropriate size & shape; smooths out without bubbles; stays on good ... but when it's time to replace it, the residue from the glue cleans up fairly easily (just rub it with a fingertip and it balls up & peels off). I bought one of those screen protectors when I got the K20D, and I'm much less satisfied with its performance than I was with the plain old packing tape I used on the *ist-D and K10D. Re: studio light brand suggestions
From: Rob Studdert CFLs with integrated ballasts/electronics generally run at a higher frequency then the mains so that's generally not a problem. And from experience I would expect that cylindrical fluorescent tubes designed for photo-lights would likely be designed to exhibit persistence that negates the pulsing (as I haven't experienced it). Our ABC TV is state funded and generally has the best gear that's about, currently they run arrays of 2' tubes with LED as highlights for 1:1 interviews, colour balance is excellent and integrates perfectly with outside lighting. The wide shots below were shot using AWB on the *ist D and the portrait was shot using the K20D with a manual WB: http://picasaweb.google.com.au/distudio/Lighting?authkey=Gv1sRgCLzWi5ypt_r39QE# I've only got one real problem with the new fluorescent technology. My next school assignment is to shoot someone at a computer - lit by those horrible old green fluorescent lamps. REQUIRED to shoot daylight chrome film and color balance the strobe to match the fluorescent lamps with a green gel and correct the light with a magenta filter over the lens. I have all the appropriate gels and filters. But everybody's gone to the new technology and I can't find anyone still using the old nasty green ones. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

If you like the Alien Bees, you should also like the White Lightnings. Manufactured by the same company. One thing to consider is the replacement cost for modeling lamps and flash tubes. The Alien Bees replacement tube is about half the cost of the tube for the Bowens monolights, and about 1/3 the cost of the Elinchrom tubes. However, none of these are TUNGSTEN lights. If you're thinking the old fashion style can lights with the slider that changes from spot to flood, those things are WAY EXPENSIVE. OTOH, you can probably get started with clamp on lights from Home Depot or Lowes. I'd make sure I got the ones with ceramic sockets to handle higher wattage bulbs. From: "Tanya Love" Elinchrom or Bowens are the only way to go if you are serious. That said, I've been shooting Alien Bees for years now and love them. They now have a distributor in Australia which is even better, and you can get the same features for half of the price of either of the aforementioned brands. PLUS, they come in PINK! Woohoo! And having such a car and > planning to have the next one with all wheel drive is not presumptuous in > any way. The fact that you mentioned what I wrote about as a 'work around' solution implies the presumption that you felt there to be a deficiency. Your analogy isn't particularly apt in the way you put it. How to make it more apt: The fact that your car isn't equipped with four wheel drive doesn't mean you can't drive it off-road. It means that it will not have the traction of a four wheel drive equipped vehicle in some circumstances, and that when you drive it off road you have to be aware of that fact and adjust your driving appropriately. This is not a lack of a 'convenience feature' or a work around, it's the lack of a particular capability which requires that you act differently when presented with a situation that might utilize that capability effectively. That is an analogous situation to the fact that Lightroom does not include the ability to interact with multiple independent database files simultaneously: when faced with the notion of working with original file repositories of a larger scope than might be sensible to have in a single database all the time, you need to work differently compared to how you might work if LR supported managing multiple database files simultaneously. To debate the point further is to natter on into semantics, not photography ... ;-) Suffice it to say Lightroom doesn't have this capability at present and adjust how you work with it to suit what it does do. -- Godfrey godfreydigiorgi.posterous.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Lightroom 3 now available
You're SOL on the iBook, LR3 requires an Intel-based Mac. Your PC's graphics card is far too old to support CUDA and the PC itself is probably too old, current system requirements are a P4 and 2GB of RAM running XP SP3 or later. -Adam On Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 7:36 AM, David J Brooks wrote: > I have a G4 iBook, should i be concerned on LR3 working here. Re: Dust spots ;-( Give me some help!
Hi Bob, It's almost certainly not beneath the filter - if it's right against the sensor then changing the aperture doesn't make it disappear (it's the distance between the dust and sensor and the lower angle of the light that makes the dust disappear as you open the lens aperture). Depending on what the tech did at GFM it could be a stubborn bit of dust or a faulty filter (I had one, it manifested as a fine spray of dust and was visible only above f11 - fixed under warranty by CR Kennedy Australia). A check by Pentax would be my suggestion. The dust find function only closes the lens to f16 for the test and ignores anything below a certain size (not sure what it is). It's useful as a check if you are mainly shooting portraits and other images with fairly wide open aperture, but if you close down the aperture a lot then using the highest aperture on your sharpest lens and examining the image is the best way to find dust. Hope this helps Leon On 11 June 2010 23:23, Bob Sullivan wrote: > Rob, > I've tried the dust detect function and it shows nothing - a white > screen mock-up of the sensor. > I'm afraid of something beneath the filter assembly and the trouble of > replacing the camera. > Thanks for the suggestions as to cause. > Regards, Bob S. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Not sure what you're talking about, but Macbooks have Nividia graphics cards. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CUDA Paul, CUDA is a technology that potentially allows to use one's GPU in order to assist the CPU thereby significantly increasing combined computational power. It is said that the nature of computations that programs such as LightRoom or Photoshop perform lends itself easily to such an enhancement. As a matter of purely subjective evidence, my brother (IT consultant, etc) indicated to me that I may expect as much as 5-10 *times* faster processing of my images should new LR have CUDA integration. I hope it sheds some light on this.
