Flickriver loads all of the images in a blog style, which may not work for
everyone. The best way I've found is to, click on the first photo (left of
screen, not thumbnail), it gets bigger. Click on it again (the cursor
becomes a magnifying glass) and you get a full sized picture in a more
standard gallery style and you can move back and forth easily using the
arrow keys.

I use the remote control F with my K10D with the 3 second MLU remote
option and it works fine. Buying a stiffer tripod helped, too =)

OK, it seems I was wrong - not for the first time and definitely not for
the last.

The IR remote *does* trigger a mirror-up option on the K200D.

In my defence the manual is ambiguous. In describing the self timer
operation, the manual specifically mentions that the mirror goes up with
the 2 sec delay option, but when discussing the 3 sec delay with the IR
remote it doesn't mention mirror-up. So I assumed (wrongly - I just
tested it) that the mirror only went up when the shutter opened.

I really do need to study the manual more closely

Jens,

I've had a W60 and used it to shoot probably 40,000+ images (52,000+ between my
W10 and W60 combined) over the last couple of years. I used it mostly to take
product shots for a client who sells vintage watches.

It's really a very good camera. The resolution is quite good, the lens is sharp
and focuses down to mm's and, of course, it's waterproof. I've taken mine into
a
pool down to about 12 feet without any trouble. I've even recorded underwater
video with it.

My only wish for the camera were for it to have settings that aren't burried in
menus but that was probably a design issue to make the camera easier to water
seal. I found the battery life to be pretty good and the batteries don't take
super long to charge.

As far as return on investment goes, it's by far the best camera I own :-)

Withers might also have felt it was his duty to provide information to the FBI.
He was a former law enforcement officer. In the early years of the civil rights
movement, some blacks were less than fully on board. They were a small minority
of course, but support for King was less than unanimous early on.

Regardless of what Withers' motivation might have been, the story had to be
told once the information was available. Withholding information from the
public is never good policy, and a journalist is morally obligated to keep his
or her readers informed.

Why drag it up? Because this photographer was apparently working
under the umbrella of journalism, although my skim of the article
doesn't reveal if he was a freelancer or attached to a news agency.
His photographic subjects appear to have embraced him as a
news-gatherer. Being an informer to an agency of the law is a serious
breach of journalistic impartiality.

Thanks, Frank.

Doesn't quite work for me yet but I think there's a photo in there

Yes - the DA 16-45 exhibits some barrel distortion at the short end.
The horizon is also a bit tilted to the right which exaggerates the
curvature.

Thanks, Jack. I think that 'reflects' my view as well.

I agree that the sea (which was indeed shallow - I was standing in it!)
looks muddy and it wasn't in reality, so a bit more work might be
worthwhile to improve that.

The same function is available on the K20D and the K-7. K-7 manual pg
138 and 141.

Although it's not mentioned in the manual, I don't see why you

Doesn't really work for me, Brian. Sorry! No surrounding drama and what appears
to be very shallow and perhaps a little muddy "sea."
Reflection if fine and your composition, right on.
Technically well done.

OT: Civil Rights Photographer Unmasked as Informer

2010-09-15 Thread Jerry in Arizona
J. Edgar Hoover kept secret dossiers on almost everyone with a public face, and
many who didn't.  He hated MLK and anything to do with the civil rights
movement.  The revelation that the MLK photographer was an FBI informant only
goes to show the efforts he made to try and destroy the image of MLK.  I don't
think he succeeded.  We should not hide from  history.

I guess maybe because of the fact that being an informer is at least
questionable. Also it may be something to do with the history of how
the FBI tried to undermine the civil rights movement. Why not drag it

I'm using an old IR remote off one of Pentax's old film compact cameras
- works well and cheap too!

My problem with IR remotes is that they don't trigger the mirror-up,
self timer option that the wired remotes do (at least they don't on the
*istDS and K200D). And using an IR remote from behind the camera
requires a bit of flexibility that I'm sadly lacking these days :-)>

When I'm doing landscape photography using a tripod, I like to use the
mirror-up option to minimize camera shake. The fact that the K-x and
K-r don't have a wired remote port (when the earlier low-end cameras
did) is very disappointing.

I received af Hähnel HWC433 C80 remote trigger for my K-7 and K20 today.
I's originally made for Canon cameras, but it comes with af cable(jack) for
Pentax as well, so it works with my Pentax'es as well as with K10, K100,
K200 as well the Samsung GX10 and GX20.

It can activate the AF function and the 2 sec. timer, which is nice for
macro work.
I can use the trigger device (reciever) directly. It causes no vibrations to
the camera body, due to the cable connection - or I kan use the small
transmitter, that has a telescopic antenna.

I tried to activate the camera from adistanace of perhaps 10m (30 feet),
which worked just fine.

The price tag is a little high here - about 100 USD. But it's worth it, I
guess.

Now I can do family-dinner shots, that will include my self, for a change
:-)
I just need to put the camera on a tripod in a suitable distance from the
table - and then bring the small remote trigger with me.

What I really want it for, is panorama shots from a very high tripod or
monopod, in which case I can't actually reach the camera with my hands.

I guess I can recommend this nice, small, Irish made device.
Probably my gear of the year as well.

Re: Scanning bit depth

2010-09-15 Thread Tom C
Film has no bits. :-)

The Minolta Dimage Scan Dual IV that Adam mentioned produces 16-bit
scans. I have one as well and have had no problems getting the
desired dynamic range from scanned film images. I also use VueScan. Of
course your scan will be no better than the 1st generation image.

I find that my scanned film images always seem to retain the magical
film quality even though digital. I don't know why that is, or if
it's my imagination, but there's a certain quality of smoothness or
naturality that I see in them.

Other exhibits are free, but this one is 5 quid, which will hardly
break your bank. It also gives you a 10 pound discount towards the
book purchase, which then ends up costing 15 pounds. The way I looked
at it was: I'm just having a kebab for lunch today and in exchange for
20 pounds I get to see the Camille Silvy exhibit and own the book.
Fuzzy logic, but I'm happy with the results :-)

While at the NPG, I also saw the mini exhibit of Jason Bell's "An
Englishman in New York", which despite the title featured a fair
amount of women:

http://www.npg.org.uk/whatson/display/jason-bell.php

If you like B&W portraits, it's worth a visit (Kate Winslet looks
particularly lovely). It only has a small room to itself with maybe 20
portraits hanging, but then you can sneak into the bookstore and thumb
through the book to see many more. I didn't buy the book but wish I
could've given up my kebab lunch for it.

The thing is that for most people choosing a camera isn't based on a simple
scalar quantity like cost or resolution, but a very complex vector:
cost, resolution, high iso quality, low iso quality, size, ease of use, ease of
manual focus, auto focus speed, exposure accuracy, and so forth.

I'm also coming to reject the single brand theory of camera ownership. Yes,
it's nice to have all of your lenses work on all of your bodies, but bodies
are becoming damn near expendable these days, and it's almost a case of buying
a lens/body combination to do a particular job.

So, if you need a capability that can only be achieved with a canon lens, or a
nikon body, buy what you need in that family to do that job.

Assuming, of course, that you have the money to buy multiple camera bodies.

It sound like what I'll need to do is get a 645D, a close up lens, a
suitable negative mount and light source, then do HDR multiple
exposure to extract the full range of tonality from the negatives,
then write a filter that'll relinearize the non-linear response of
film, to get the full dynamic range.

IMO only makes sense with an all electronic MILC mount plus smart PK

unnecessary bulk to the body and offer no significant advantage over
other EVIL + adaptor offerings. And please, Pentax make it APS-C or

Re: Scanning bit depth

Vuescan does multiscan as well.

Cheap scans are almost always garbage. A half-decent dedicated 35mm
scanner or a decent flatbed (for MF) will produce greatly superior
scans for not too much money.

My Minolta Scan Dual IV ($250 on eBay) and Epson 4870 (couple
generation old high-end flatbed) produce excellent results with not
too much difficulty.

With film, you either have to pay through the nose for good scans or
do them yourself. The second option is cheaper but time consuming.

Putting you lens on another brand body will become far more common
since these adapters are easily available now. (Cotty lead the way

work otherwise, well, damn.
