GESO musicians at Balboa and Swing festival

2010-12-13 Thread Larry Colen
I went through my 1.37 gazillion photos of musicians at the dance workshop I
photographed a little over a week ago and narrowed it down to 41.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157625595687808/

If you prefer the flickriver interface:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157625595687808/

The bands are:
The Fil Lorenz Orchestra
Emily Anne's Delights
Regina Pontillo's Fantastic Swingtime Band
Slim Jenkins

While Emily Anne was quite attractive, I've got to say that Slim Jenkins was an
amazingly photogenic band. Especially the way that Jeff and Joel would mug for
the audience.

Lavay Smith sang two songs with Emily Anne's delights, and while she's one of
the most attractive musicians, as well as one of the best sounding, in the bay
area, I'm afraid that none of my photos did her justice. Part of the issue was
that I was using autofocus and didn't notice the K-x focusing on the mic.

Small businesses are in very tight straits right now. If this brewery has a
brewpub as part of it, he should get a reasonable amount for the use of the
photo, plus any day that he goes to the pub, he gets a free pint.

Jack, I think that it this new brewery is successful, that individual
will gain much while you are going to gain nothing. I am thinking that
you could suggest to hand over the rights to the image to them but the
price would be a percentage from any bottle/can/whatever of beer he

I think that making it one payment sale whereas you retain the rights is

G'day all

Here's the short list of potential themes for the PUG in 2011. Only
January is locked in but the others will be locked in by the end of the
week unless anyone feels that some are simply too
easy/difficult/obscure/impenetrable:

January: Patterns in Nature
February: Life's Simple Pleasures
March: Big Weather
April: Memories of Kodachrome
May: Found Objects
June: Close to Home
July: Strange
August: Monochrome Landscapes
September: Self Portrait
October: Roads
November: Underfoot
December: The Ravages of Time

The list has been compiled based on suggestions received and looking at
past gallery themes.

Note that if you don't want to submit a themed image in any month, you
can submit a non-themed image as part of each month's 'Open Gallery'.

I bought my 24-inch iMac about two years ago. The hard drive failed after a
few months. Apple replaced it with a larger drive, so I was okay with that.
About a month ago, I had a serious failure. Took the computer to the apple
store and they replaced the logic board and graphics card. I have apple
care, so it was still under warranty. Yesterday, slightly less than a month
later, it had another catastrophic failure. Seemed like it might be the
logic board again. I took it to the apple store this afternoon. I asked the
tech guy if the iMacs might have a problem with overheating or something.
He said, no, and they rarely have problems with the IMac 24s. I told him I
was pretty unhappy about having to bring it in for the third time. He said
he understood -- and he gave me a brand new iMac 27, a much better computer
with an excellent monitor. I'm pleased as could be. Waiting for it to
restore all my files from a Time Machine volume right now. Hope to be
processing my pics with it by tomorrow.

Re: PESO - Paper in the Snow

2010-12-13 Thread Ken Waller
I'd start by adding 1 to 1.5 stops to the metered exposure in camera &
checking the histogram to ensure the snow isn't blown out & that the
histogram is as far to the right as possible & then adjust exposure as
needed if needed.

Once @ the computer (I use PS CS2) I'd again check the histogram & use
levels to set the white point using the white point eye dropper (click on
the white point eye dropper in levels) by then clicking on the snow that you
want to make 'white'.

I just did that on your image and it looks like snow now.

You are actually right, after all the shake reduction already has the
sensor floating and shifting in a two dimensional plane, it is simply
a matter of making it move in three dimensions. Having seen
disassembled units in the factory, I can see the simplicity to it.
The catch is, for me, is that the camera becomes 'deeper' something
like a small 645D to allow room for the sensor to tilt (may not be a
bad thing) and added bonus of something else failing (now that is a
bad thing)...

well you'd have to shift the shutter etc as well, in fact pretty much
the whole camera - tools like the Zoerk Panorama Shift Adaptor let you
use MF lenses on 35mm SLRs and give you lots of shift using that

G'day all

Here's the short list of potential themes for the PUG in 2011. Only
January is locked in but the others will be locked in by the end of the
week unless anyone feels that some are simply too
easy/difficult/obscure/impenetrable:

January: Patterns in Nature
February: Life's Simple Pleasures
March: Big Weather
April: Memories of Kodachrome
May: Found Objects
June: Close to Home
July: Strange
August: Monochrome Landscapes
September: Self Portrait
October: Roads
November: Underfoot
December: The Ravages of Time

The list has been compiled based on suggestions received and looking at
past gallery themes.

Note that if you don't want to submit a themed image in any month, you
can submit a non-themed image as part of each month's 'Open Gallery'.

As mentioned in my previous post of a few days ago, the January
Submission form is now open at:

And the Submission Guidelines are here:

Submissions will be accepted until 31 December, at least

Here's the short list of potential themes for the PUG in 2011. Only
January is locked in but the others will be locked in by the end of the
week unless anyone feels that some are simply too
easy/difficult/obscure/impenetrable:

January: Patterns in Nature
February: Life's Simple Pleasures
March: Big Weather
April: Memories of Kodachrome
May: Found Objects
June: Close to Home
July: Strange
August: Monochrome Landscapes
September: Self Portrait
October: Roads
November: Underfoot
December: The Ravages of Time

The list has been compiled based on suggestions received and looking at
past gallery themes.

Note that if you don't want to submit a themed image in any month, you
can submit a non-themed image as part of each month's 'Open Gallery'.

As mentioned in my previous post of a few days ago, the January

A low contrast image will have a narrow histogram.
If you want to increase the contrast in post, you
can use the levels controls in photoshop to increase
contrast. It doesn’t require any camera hardware changes.

Read through this:
http://theory.uchicago.edu/~ejm/pix/20d/tests/noise/noise-p3.html

It's heavy duty stuff, but very good information.

Regarding flat scenes, if you shoot in flat light, you will get flat scenes.
Expanding the range isn't going to change the fact that you have flat
lighting. Besides that, in post, you can modify or use a different program
curve to render your image (that is essentially what Curves is used for).

I bough my Mz-5n in Andorra around 8-9 years ago and the prices were quite

An example (I guess you'll be able to read Spanish) from the main Spanish
Pentax

They even have a shop that is a good representation of the best prices that you
can find in Spain for new Pentax equipment:

Spain (and Andorra, of course). I don't know about Portugal though (I live in
the opposite side of the peninsula), but I don't think that is is specially
cheap (the importer is the Spanish one, Reflecta).

I'll ask some colleagues for shops in Andorra and let you know off-list. If you
are going to visit Barcelona, let me know and I'll be happy to inform you about
the best shops for Pentax

Certainly not with my bare hands.

The first one I picked up with a plastic bag, the second one I used leather
gloves to put it in the bag.

My neighbor has been having problems with rats and put some poison bait out
under his house. It is possible that the raccoons got either the bat, or one of

RE: PESO - Paper in the Snow

2010-12-13 Thread Bob W
as far as taking pictures of snow is concerned you have several choices.

1. use an incident light meter but shield the underside of the dome from the
reflections off the snow while you take the reading.

2. use the sunny-16 rule. In the case of your picture you'd have had the
right exposure at about 1/125 at f/16 at ISO 100.

3. use a reflected light meter and open up about 2 stops from the given
reading to compensate for the above-average whiteness

4. use the histogram to expose to the right, then make an adjustment in your
favourite image editing program

5. take what you've got and use the aforementioned program to set the white
point based on the snow you want to be whitest

Hope that helps.

Re: PESO - Paper in the Snow

2010-12-13 Thread AlunFoto
Hi Kenton,

For the pic in question, I think the first you can look at is the
curves tool. Try to bump the highlights up a notch. You could also
play around with the white balance. Snow can easily take on a
off-white hue if the WB is too high. When you tweak it down, though,
you got to watch the shaded areas that will pick up a lot of blue from
cloudless skies.

For snow shooting in general, I always let the camera meter the scene
directly rather than off something else. If in doubt whether the
camera will handle the light conditions, I check the histogram and
look for how the highlights are distributed. With snow, you can expect
to get a nice little mound on the histogram off to the right. To make
the snow appear truly white, that mound in the histogram should be as
far off to the right as you can place it before it begins to stack up
like an overexposure.

hth,
Jostein

Re: PESO - Paper in the Snow

A fairly easy method is to use the curves tool in photoshop. I used
your image applied the curve shown.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1604247/PESO/temp/3__500x500_paper_in_the_snow_curves.jpg

If your photo editing software doesn't have a curve tool you'll have to
muck about with contrast and brightness sliders, but they really do
about the same thing.

Use as a product label?
Perpetual, unlimited usage? Those are big
ticket licensing issues.

Check out fotoQuote for realistic quotes based on how long
he wants to
license the picture, how many labels he plans to print
using the
picture, and other ancillary usage.

You really need to nail down the details and have a proper
legal
contract drawn up that has all the terms spelled out.

Don't look at this as selling a print, you are licensing a
picture and
you need to make sure that you aren't leaving money on the
table by
giving your picture away, or thinking that you are in a
weak position.

That was a big problem a few years ago, when we experienced a rabies
outbreak/scare. People, and I use that term very loosely with any
creature that will do this sort of thing indiscriminately, put out
poisened bait for raccoons. Raccoons, or any other mammal for that
matter, with rabies will ignore food. All that was accomplished was a
lot a orphaned raccoon kits and not a few dead dogs.

help needed: Pentax stores in Portugal or Andorra

2010-12-13 Thread Luiz Felipe
Well, as I said above I'm needing addresses of camera stores in Andorra
(Portugal and Spain as secondary options - most welcome but would need some
extra time). The catch - those stores should offer Pentax K-r... any ideas?

I'd be traveling really fast around the area, but my schedule calls for a lazy
day (for me) in Andorra. I'll be packing my group towards BR from Lisboa but my
last day in europe will be spent signing papers and fighting bureaucrats -
little time to buy gear.

As part 2 of the question, is there any difference between camera prices
between Portugal/ Spain/ France/ Andorra? Back in 1982 I bought my Lx in
Andorra at a very interesting price - lower than some New York stores
advertised. Is there any difference between countries in the area?

Many thanks,

Re: Could you electronically boost contrast between sensor and A/D?

2010-12-13 Thread David Parsons
Read through this:
http://theory.uchicago.edu/~ejm/pix/20d/tests/noise/noise-p3.html

It's heavy duty stuff, but very good information.

Regarding flat scenes, if you shoot in flat light, you will get flat
scenes. Expanding the range isn't going to change the fact that you
have flat lighting. Besides that, in post, you can modify or use a
different program curve to render your image (that is essentially what
Curves is used for).

Image Sale Qustion

2010-12-13 Thread Jack Davis

use by a small malt and beer brewery he is planning to start.
His idea is to have my image augmented by some expeditious retouching..he calls

It would be used as a product label as well as for advertising, signage or...?
I told him not to bother with photo credit. Especially since it will be altered
somewhat.
He is now asking for clarification as to his unlimited free use of the image
henceforth. From his standpoint, I really don't see how it can be any other
way. How long "henceforth" will be is, of course, the grand unknown.

I've suggested, and I believe is is fine with, a 10 MB email attachment.

Photographing Jewelry

2010-12-13 Thread Walter Gilbert

 Hi all,

I have a friend who makes some really nice turquoise jewelry
(http://www.sisdesigns.com/) and she's asked me if I'd like to take a
shot at doing some photographs of her work for catalogs and design
conference submissions. We've already worked on some rudimentary
lighting and staging for the pieces, and are going to do some
experimenting today. Before I jump in, I figured I'd ask if any of you
might have any pointers.

Of course, I'll be shooting in RAW, and have decided to bracket the
shots. Beyond that, I wonder if it would be best to use my M-50/2, or
my 18-55mm kit lens, or something longer?

Thanks for any advice anyone can offer!

Could you electronically boost contrast between sensor and A/D?

2010-12-13 Thread Larry Colen
In general, we want to boost the dynamic range of our cameras. However,
sometimes we're shooting a very flat scene, or a lens with low contrast. If we
wanted to, for example, expand six stops of dynamic range into 12, or 14, bits
of data it seems that one way of doing this *might* be to increase the ISO, but
that would also increase the noise.

Are there be any electronic ways of doing this that wouldn't change the
sensitivity, or increase the noise? I don't expect that there are ways for an
end user to do this, but could a camera manufacturer allow you to dial in the
dynamic range of your camera for a particular scene?

Re: OT: shifting lenses

2010-12-13 Thread Walter Gilbert
I wonder if it might not be easier than one might suspect. A few
days ago, I saw a drawing of the Pentax image stabilization system
demonstrating its use of electromagnets on the sensor to achieve it. I
can't help thinking it might be a fairly easy trick for them to use that
field to tilt and shift the sensor on demand by electronically
manipulating the current to the electromagnets.

Of course, that's not to say it's feasible in mass-production --
something I'd have no idea about. But, I don't see why it couldn't be
do-able if there was, for some strange reason, a huge demand for that
sort of thing.

The dreary economy is what keeps this diner available for my

EDGES/CORNERS DINGED/WORN; GUNK UNDER BATTERY DOOR & IN SCREWS ;SCUFFS AROUND

Ouch! And that's with only a half-year of use. FWIW, I have no idea what the
