Re: OT - Update on the Injury Front

Frank, I'm really glad to hear this!
I have to say though that all this talk about stiffness in the morning
and putting ice on it makes me think you more than ever need to buy
flowers on this special day ]=)
Cheers
Ecke

2011/2/13 frank theriault knarftheria...@gmail.com:
Some of you may recall that back in December I broke a bone in my left
hand.  Well, that's healed quite nicely, thanks to weekly visits for
physio and flexibility exercises that were diligently performed
several times per day at home.  Although it's stiff in the morning, it
soon feels pretty much normal, except that I notice a slight lack of
strength at times (it's about 90%, quite normal for this duration
after the injury, according to the therapist).

So, a three weeks ago I get the green light to get back on the bike,
and the next day I notice a somewhat acute (but bearable) pain where I
know the Achilles tendon to be.  I continue to ride, hoping I can
work through it and it might go away.

Alas, after three days of working through it, I realize that
although it's not getting worse, it's also not getting better, so off
to the hospital I go.  Sure enough, it's Achilles tendinosis (the new
word for Achilles tendinitis).  Not bad, just inflamed (and swollen as
hell), due to getting back on the bike too quickly after 6 weeks off.
I went for a follow-up last weekend, and they told me to stay off the
bike for another two weeks (meaning that, hopefully, next week will be
my last doing the courier thing on-foot-and-transit).  Luckily it
doesn't hurt at all to walk.

Lots of icing and stretching exercises, and this week it's feeling the
best it has since the occurance, plus the swelling it almost gone.

I guess that age is catching up to me somewhat, eh?

 ;-)

The good part is that I'm getting lots of pictures while walking and
 transiting.

 cheers,
 frank

OTOH, I always try to shoot my 1.4 at 5.6. Not really low light but
wonderfully sharp. For very low light I tend to reply on SR, physical
support, and the hope of one day getting a K5.

I am always surprised when people make a statement that SR compensates
for the lack of a faster lens (or for not using a flash).

SR can be useful, but only when the subject itself doesn't move.
When the subject moves, - you want to have exposure time to freeze
the motion, and that's when fast lenses are helpful
(or a flash, depending on the circumstances).
And that's why Larry is pulling out his 50/1.4.

I find myself using my fa50/1.4 under the same circumstances, and using
50-135 at other times (for 50mm focal distance), when I am not
lazy to switch to it from 17-70/4.

Extremely subjectively (no tests whatsoever), - my impression of the
sharpness of my fa50/1.4 is similar to Larry's.
I tend to blame it on how I use the lens: because I always tend to push
it to f/1.4 where it's softer and the DOF is shallow.
Additionally, usually the ISO at that point is also set to at least 800
if not 1600-3200. Hence, the combination of all these factors
lowers the expectation.

This is pretty much the experience I've had on there. It was

but I find it's on a whole different level than PDML. Somewhere
between DPR and an intro to using your camera course.

I eventually came back to the one true faith here at PDML.

PESO - Speed Skater

2011-02-14 Thread Chris Sheppard
Halifax is hosting the Canada Winter Games over the next few weeks,
and of course everyone with a camera is out. Especially at the speed
skating track, because it's a free venue :) This is a little outside
my usual subject matter, but I think this shot came out pretty good.
Actually, more than pretty good considering I was balancing a 2 year

Funny you mention your lack of a local track. This is/was supposed to
be a temporary installation to be taken down after the Games are over.
But they‘ve had it open all winter for the general public to use and
now there’s a push to keep it there permanently.

Now that I'm walking, it's around my neck all the time, though.

The camera doesn't need to be in the back-pack. You can't take photos
while it's in there.

Something like this might let you have the camera around your neck while
you're on your bike.

http://www.linkdelight.com/vmchk/O4M-Camera-Chest-Harness-Waist-Protect-Strap-for-D-SLR.html

OR

http://optechusa.com/stabilizer-strap.html

The first one is basically a waist strap that has a couple of big
elastic bands that make an X around where the lens mounts to the body
and holds it against you. Just slip the bands off to use the camera.

The second is a neoprene donut with a hole the lens slips into.

They're something like what Galen Rowell used to use when he was
photographing climbers. He climbed with them to get the angle he wanted
and needed to keep the camera from swinging when he wasn't using it. But
when he needed to get the camera free he didn't need a whole lot of
fumbling around.

I think these would both work one-handed.

I guess that age is catching up to me somewhat, eh?

 ;-)

The good part is that I'm getting lots of pictures while walking and
 transiting.

 cheers,
 frank

Are you (as I suspect) using the on-board pop-up flash?  They are next to
useless.  You'll need to invest in a decent dedicated flash.  I don't know
flashes (I use an old Vivitar something-or-other), but if you do a lot of
indoor stuff, it will be invaluable.

Either that or get a really fast lens.

 The flash will be cheaper.

 Nice work, though!!

Re: OT - Update on the Injury Front

From: Mark Roberts

Actually, it's not inflamed. That's why they now call it tendinosis
rather than tendinitis (and why they haven't recommended any
antiinflammatory meds for you). It turns out that tendons don't get
inflammation. The sad thing is that (as of 2002, anyway) 8 out of 10
*medical textbooks* still indicate that tendon overuse injuries
involve inflammation, even though it has been shown not to be the
case.

I'm currently working my way through patellar tendonosis and all the
literature dispensed by my physical therapist still tells me that it's
inflammation... :(

Here's an editorial from the British Medical Journal on the subject
for anyone interested in that sort of thing:
http://www.robertstech.com/stuff/tendonosis.pdf

I guess it makes a good case that it's not inflammation, but it didn't
give me a clear understanding of what it IS, or how to make it better.

Well, it's been a /long/ time since I posted a photo, but I've
gathered together the necessary round-to-its and spare time together
in one place, so here is a PESO.

I spent the day at the Chelsea Physic Garden, founded in 1673 by the
Worshipful Society of Apothecaries. It is open to the public for a
couple of weekends in February for viewing the snowdrops. The weather
was overcast with the odd spot of rain, which was fine by me - it
probably made for softer lighting and helped keep the crowds away. I
was really wishing I'd brought a) a grey card b) something dry to
kneel on. Next time...

http://efeatherstone.dyndns.org/~ericf/photos/2011-02-13/content/IMGP4387_large.html

Not a type of photography I've ever really tried before so comments
welcome.

Motion blur of the subject isn't always bad, motion blur from camera shake is
almost always bad.

Exactly. Interestingly, at one point last night I put my DFA 50 macro on the
K20 to photograph IDs, and for the first part of the evening just used it as my
50 on the K-x with the 77 on the K20. When I switched to the 16-50 on the K20
I didn't shoot any more with the macro lens

Microscopic tearing of the tendon fibers, in other words.

That is not within the scope of the article, which concludes with,

From my own experience, I can recommend heat treatment before

Non-storm.  We were supposed to get something like 30 cm, but by the
time it reached us we got maybe 6-10 cm (4 or 5 inches) - a snowfall,
to be sure, but hardly the storm of the century that they predicted.
Still, while it was coming down it got quite heavy at times:

 http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2011/02/neither-rain-nor-sleet-nor-snow.html

Had a hell of a time focusing;  the autofocus was (I suspect) being
fooled by the heavy snow, which also made it hard to focus manually
(can't remember which I did here, but one way or the other, it's out
of focus).  Still, I think it gives a good idea of the fun bike
 messengers have in the winter.

Hope you enjoy.  Comments always welcome.

Hence, the combination of all these factors
 lowers the expectation.

necessary output has to be metric. If I've got to convert it, I'd rather
have a program that works in whatever unit the final output needs to be in.

The scale on the mat cutter is marked off in 1/16 inch increments. I want
the output to be in 1/16 inch increments.

Metric would just add another layer of conversion factors I'd have to
 multiply by.

I have a fractions calculator app for the iPod Touch that works great
when I'm calculating mat and framing dimensions. Much easier to call a
framer and request something in the fractional dimensions they're used
to working with.

Yeah, despite flickr's massive suckage, it's some of the cheapest, convenient
offsite storage that doesn't trash the bandwidth to my home server. However,
because they're such prudes, I mark anything that shows boobage as at least
moderate if not restricted and you have to be a member of flickr (or
yahoo), and tell them that you don't get offended by adult themed photos to
see them.

Doesn't it make you feel safer to know that you're so well protected from such
harmful images?

I think that I've fixed the permissions. It didn't want to make them visible
to public search or something. I had to set up a special set of just the art
photos and open up the permissions, safety, and search settings of those:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157626050853922/

And they seem to be opened up in the original sets.

As I said, don't you feel so much safer?
